Sunday January 15: Wikipedia Day NYC 2017

You are invited to join us at Ace Hotel for Wikipedia Day NYC 2017, a Wikipedia celebration and mini-conference as part of the project's global 16th birthday festivities. In addition to the party, the event will be a participatory unconference, with plenary panels, lightning talks, and of course open space sessions.

Reversion of Baltimore Ravens edit by 126.19.93.217

Why did you revert my edit on the Baltimore Ravens page? You should read the edit. It's just some guy inserting his personal opinion about how great the move is. It barely sounds appropriate. I'll re-add it since I assume you didn't even read it. 126.19.93.217 (talk) 19:01, 18 January 2017 (UTC)

You removed two URLs from reference citations & removed part of the image syntax, leaving a red link. While it is true I did not scroll down far enough to see the opinion that you removed, the first three portions of your edit were indistinguishable between incompetence or vandalism, so I reverted them. Since your edit summary deleted random opinion of a user had nothing to do with the URL removals or the mangling of the image syntax, I flagged it as a misuse of the edit summary. I apologize if I misinterpreted your intent behind these mistakes. When I spot something that looks like vandalism or seems amiss, I act quickly. I would ask that you please preview your edits before saving them to avoid future mistakes in the Wikimarkup & the interpretation of your intent. We all make mistakes, particularly when we begin editing. After, seven years & 16,000 edits, I, myself, am certainly not immune to mistakes, although previewing my edits has certainly helped.
Your last edit to Baltimore Ravens looks great!
Finally, when you post to another user's talk page, please either start a new section or add to an existing section. Most editors will react pretty negatively to someone posting to the top of their page.

I received the following response by email through the contact at www.uwb.edu/admin/facilities/transportation/parking.

Hi Raymond,

You can park in any numbered stall as long as you pay for the stall. There are pay machines at each lot and you pay for the space when you park. Our prices are 3 dollars for under 3 hours and 6 dollars for all day. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

@Brianhe: & @Peaceray: Hey there, thanks for asking this important question and for doing a little research on the parking. I've updated the event page with details on the rooms and building addresses. You are correct that parking for the day is $6 for all day. The garages can fill up, so it's best to leave a ten minute buffer for your travel time. I emailed Kimberly to ask her if she would recommend a garage and give us further instruction. Saturday March 11: Art+Feminism Edit-a-thon @ MoMA

Join us at the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Education and Research Building at the Museum of Modern Art, 4 West 54th Street, on Saturday, March 11, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for an all-day communal updating of Wikipedia entries on subjects related to art and feminism. There will be childcare, snacks, multiple trainings and panel discussions. People of all gender identities and expressions welcomed and encouraged to attend.

New question about editing

Hi Peaceray,

I've been an editor a long time, but rarely make changes. Usually when I'm doing research and find a change or citation that needs updating. Today I ran across an entry that I believe needs editing, but wanted some guidance before I did so.

There is a section in Influence and reception that seems to just be personal opinion, specifically: →Credibility—a Kirkus review is respected throughout the industry and by media and libraries →Marketing tool—a good Kirkus review is a valuable marketing tool, great for a blurb on a press release, or to be placed on your site, or as an editorial review on retailer sites →Personal gratification—every author I know feels great when their Kirkus review has good things to say.

Am i correct that this is personal opinion and should be removed or rewritten?

@BookReviewer: Well, it certainly smacks of WP:PROMO, but more importantly, it is a copyright violation (see WP:COPYVIO) as the text exists in selfpublishingadvice.org/publishing-is-a-kirkus-review-worth-the-price/, which has a June 13, 2014 publication date that precedes the addition of that text to the article. I would say remove that text ASAP with an edit summary of [[WP:COPYVIO]]: copied from http://selfpublishingadvice.org/publishing-is-a-kirkus-review-worth-the-price/.
No one can argue with a WP:COPYVIO.

Got it. Removed that and updated a bit of the description. I need to cite the "most expensive fee-for-review" statement, but I know its correct. I'll find an authoritative link or price comparison chart this weekend to back it up.

Sunday March 26: Action=History Wiki-Hackathon @ Ace Hotel

On the last Sunday of every month, the Boardroom at Ace Hotel New York hosts Action Equals History — a unique opportunity for New Yorkers to learn hands-on in a technology training/workshop session about the mechanics, practices and benefits of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects. This is an opportunity for all to gather, share and work collectively towards a more robust account of history.

For this month, and following on the recent Art+Feminism campaign, we'll focus on building better edit-a-thon tools for a variety of different thematic campaigns, and user-testing them with the community. Towards a goal of advancing these tools for wider use with diverse local groups.

Cut & paste of material from Theranos to Elizabeth Holmes

@173.179.145.202: It is fine to edit anything that seems like bias, but wholesale copy & pasting needs to follow the guideline for copying within Wikipedia as well as any other guidelines. While sometimes is best to be bold, in an article that has edits from nearly 300 editors, I think some consensus & discussion on Talk:Elizabeth Holmes is appropriate.
Also, I do think that there is some negative coverage in the Questions about Theranos section, & the Awards and recognition section does state that 'Following the scrutiny over the Theranos lab controversy, Fortune named Holmes one of the "World's Most Disappointing Leaders" for 2016.' If you want to expand on that, please do, but please adhere to the editing guidelines.

A probable mistake

In this edit you posted a Template:Uw-tdel3 warning, but your edit summary referred to Template:Uw-tdel4, so presumably you intended a level 4 warning and posted the wrong one by mistake. This is of no importance, but I thought I would let you know so that you can watch out for similar mistakes in future. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 12:39, 30 March 2017 (UTC)

@JamesBWatson: Thanks for pointing this out. I usually use Twinkle for user warnings, but I think in this case, because there were section headings after the March 2017 section heading, I was trying to post manually under that heading. I think I made a typo in the template syntax, copied & pasted to the summary, saw my mistake in the body but only managed to correct it there.
I know you admins must rely on the edit summaries to determine up front about the warnings that other editors are make to a particular editor. Sorry if I created any confusion about the matter.

Question about creating a new page

Hi again,

So I wanted to create a page for Graham Brown, American thriller author that has co-written books with Clive Cussler. He is on the disambiguation page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graham_Brown already. I don't have complete info about him, but wanted to at least start the page so I did a draft so far https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Graham_Brown_(writer). So I've checked the Making Your First Page article but ran into a couple of quesions: Can I use the official bio photo with permission and how to I mark that? I have a year of birth, but not day/month. Is that necessary? I was using another author page as my example. I want to link to the books he's written, and provide a quick summary. My assumption is as a co-author of two NYT best-selling novels he qualifies as a writer of note and deserves his own page.

Camila Cabello

You keep complaining about Camila Cabello page and page don't have no picture and you keep putting old 2013 picture. I simply asked somebody to upload new pic. @Outlawstar720: You have offered no argument as to why an older picture is unusable. There are plenty of pictures in commons:Category:Camila Cabello, & they happen to be all from 2013. Any image from Commons that illustrates something or somebody in an article is generally considered acceptable. As you have not stated what your objection is to the image, none of us knows what the problem is. Please note the proper place to discuss this is at Talk:Camila Cabello, but as of As of 17 April 2017, 04:00:00 UTC, you have not posted anything there.
I would argue that is not our responsibility to provide a newer picture, but yours. As I had mentioned in one of the edit summaries, you can upload pictures at commons:Special:UploadWizard. However, you do need to ensure that the image meets the licensing requirements.

'Check your snark'

I presume this comment, which you made on my edit to Emma Morano, is meant ironically, given how 'snarky' it is? Even you yourself instantly edited your comment on my talk page. @Smurfmeister: I do believe that this edit summary, "not a cocaine overdose at an orgy or a snapped bungee rope" is a personal expression of snarkiness unrelated to the article. If you want to dicuss the lack of a cause of death, check your snark at the door., was sufficient, given the definition of snark, although after reading that definition, perhaps snide comments would have been clearer.
Regarding my edit & reverted edit at your talk page, I often use Twinkle & I was looking for something that addressed the comments that you left on Talk:Emma Morano. I navigated to TW-->Warn, then to Only warning (4im), then to the Behavior in articles submenu, which had an item {{uw-joke4im}}: Using improper humor. That seemed appropriate enough from the description, but unfortunately I skipped previewing it. {{uw-joke4im}} then seemed far, far harsher than I had intended, so I reverted it.
I freely admit that I make mistakes. The latter was a mistake & I apologize for it; the former was not & I stand by it.

Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon

Despite its wide reach, content on Wikipedia suffers from the bias of its editors: white, technically inclined, English-speaking men that live in developed, majority-Christian countries. This represents an alarming absence of voices in an increasingly important repository of shared knowledge.

In an effort to change this, the Jake is organizing a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon on Saturday, May 6th, 1 - 5 pm. Our mission is to bring together diverse communities to participate in Wikipedia editing, and improve its coverage of queer people and women of color in the arts.

We will provide childcare, snacks, and tutorials for the beginner editor.

Bring your laptop, power-cord and ideas for entries that need updating or creation. No previous Wikipedia experience required!

Sunday May 21, 10:30 am - 4:30pm: Metropolitan Museum of Art Edit-a-thon

The Metropolitan Museum of Art Edit-a-thon: Met Open Access Initiative is the Metropolitan Museum of Art's first edit-a-thon, being hosted on Sunday May 21, 2017 in Thomas J. Watson Library at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City.

The Met is excited to make available over 375,000 images of public domain artworks for contribution to Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse collection onsite and remotely. The event is a key marker too of The Metropolitan Museum of Art's first Wikimedian-in-Residence program, with resident Richard Knipel (User:Pharos), along with Wikimedia NYC. We invite you to help enhance Wikimedia communities and platforms with open access images from The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The event requires pre-registration. To register, 1) please sign-up with Eventbrite via The Met's website and 2) add your Wikipedia username to the #Participants on the wikimeetup page. Please check-in with museum staff when you arrive at the Thomas J. Watson Library within the museum.

I have found your work on the Herb Kane site exquisite. After a long absence I have returned to editing (probably temporarily) with the short term goal of weeding out a bunch of bad writing and inaccurate bits in this article from 2012 or so. I have posted my general intentions to get to this, and I wanted to let you know there is not a single one of your contributions that I take issue with; to the contrary, every one is a gem. You are much better at this than I ever was. Two things: I see you are going to the Met thing. I have my own vision for what the Met's entry itself should be. You might look at my first ever attempt at Wikipedia in the article on the Astor Court. Secondly, once I have restored accuracy to the Kane article, I will let you know; you might want to make sure I did things up to your standard, because I find that a very high bar. I currently have lived the last three years in the Seattle area after 14 years on Oahu, & am part of meta:Cascadia Wikimedians User Group.

Join us for an evening of social Wikipedia editing at the Museum of Modern Art Library's third annual Wiki Loves Pride Edit-a-thon, during which we will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles pertaining to LGBT art, culture and history.

All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required.

Themes for this event include art related to HIV/AIDS activism and on LGBTQ artists of the African Diaspora as part of the Black Lunch Table project.

Experienced Wikipedians will be on-hand to assist throughout the day. Please bring your laptop and power cord; we will have library resources, WiFi, and a list of suggested topics on hand.

Re: Citation deterioration on United States presidential elections in which the winner lost the popular vote

Hello @Peaceray: First of all, sorry for my poor English. Last night I was translating the Spanish version of the article United States presidential elections in which the winner lost the popular vote, (Elecciones presidenciales en los Estados Unidos en las que el ganador perdió el voto popular).
When I copied the paragraph of the elections between Trump and Clinton, I noticed that the photo of Trump was missing. The only thing I remember I did was change that photo, I do not know how I changed the rest. I reversed the edition to the previous version. I'm sorry for the trouble caused. Vandalism or hacking? "HTC 10" page

Doug's mistake - Thanks to Bri.

Hi Peaceray, You offered guidance on my talk page in March 2016.

I've just removed a bit of anti-brand trolling from the "HTC 10" smartphone page.

But it is not simple vandalism.

My reading of the page history: the bad-faith(?) comment was there from the first version of the page (13 April 2016).

My reading of "real world" history: the bad-faith(?) comment refers to events in August-September 2016, five or six months later.

Either the author had precognition, or there is hacking of the wikipedia article history.

The comment I removed purports to be part of the title of an external link, reference [3], "and is more likely to explode than the galaxy s7 edge".

Of course it was the Samsung Note 7 that was recalled (Sept 2016), not the Galaxy S7. But there were no issues with the Galaxy s7, and I believe the comment is playing on the fears generated around the Note 7.

In any case, the text "and is more likely to explode than the galaxy s7 edge" does not appear in the linked article which it purports to come from (Dan Seifert, the Verge).

But I really do think this is a security issue, not just vandalism.

UPDATE wayback machine confirms wikipedia's article history has been tampered with.

Wayback have 5 snapshots and only the last (11 Feb 2017) has the "likely to explode" comment. The previous clean copy is 11 Nov 2016.

Personally I'm unaware of a single Wikipedia page ever being manipulated the way you are suggesting. Consensus is not verifiability. (!!!?!?!?!?!?!!?!??!)

Yes, this is often incorrectly rendered because many contributors speak either poor English or Spanish. However, a read of the team’s history will suffice—they were originally the company team of Eagle Oil, called “El Águila” in Spanish. Their kits were red—like the Redstockings of Cincinnati—and as such they adopted a similar name. Thus, the Veracruz club came to be known as the Rojos del Águila; literally “Reds of the Eagle.” (N.B. In Spanish, the major-league Reds are known as los Rojos de Cincinnati.)

Furthermore, Red Eagles is easy enough to say in Spanish: “Águilas Rojas.” Crucially, this is not the name of the team.

Nonetheless, because this has been a persistent issue, I've included a comment in the wikicode; I had planned on putting one on the talk page, anyway, but no one looks at that.

Again: please consult with other editors before unilaterally reverting edits in subjects with which you are less familiar. —Wiki Wikardo 10:01, 13 July 2017 (UTC)

Your statement that "I had planned on putting one on the talk page, anyway, but no one looks at that." violates the Wikipedia:Consensus policy. If I do not see you starting a discussion to reach an consensus through discussion on the talk page to seek a within the next day or so, I plan to start reverting again as your edits depart from the consensus by edit.
I am perfectly aware that Rojos del Águila de Veracruz literally translates to Reds of the Eagle of Veracruz. Please do not assume another editor does not understand this. I find the statement that I was "unilaterally reverting edits in subjects with which you are less familiar" to be condescending as I was reverting to the most common translation in the history & documenting why in the edit summary, & your statement implies that I do not understand the Spanish. The question remains as to the best English translation & requires consensus. Your comments on my talk page largely belong on the article's talk page.
My apologies if I seem contentious in my remarks. I value the be bold editing guideline, but I have little patience with editors who ignore a request to reach consensus on a talk page, as per the editors should treat each other with respect and civility pillar. Editors should attempt consensus when asked. I find that editors that ignore this to be disrespectful.

Fair enough—I, too, take umbrage when other editors repeatedly revert long-standing issues with no consultation—at least you were good enough to leave an explanation in your edit summary.
I am not at all skirting consensus, I’m just going on the fact that soliciting comment on the talk page is often screaming into a black hole… I’m certainly not opposed to discussing things there.
However, it’s possible for many people to be wrong about something. That various editors have come to the same conclusion should not trump other established norms of reliability.
I’m aware that, regardless of the source language, sometimes you just have to throw up your hands and say, “that’s it, this has become the established English usage,” such as chaise lounge. However, I don’t think this is the case here, where the subject matter is not a common one in English-language media. If a closer translation exists in reliable sources, I think it’s incumbent upon Wikipedia to go with the more faithful rendering.
Quite frankly I saw this as an open-and-shut case—the only verification needed being a dictionary—but apparently you do not. So, to the talk page, Batman! —Wiki Wikardo 22:02, 13 July 2017 (UTC)
I am content with the page as it stands. I have found a reference that predates the earliest Wikipedia version using the name Red Eagles.[Rojos del Águila 1] Do I believe it was a sloppy mistake made by a harried reporter on a deadline whose Spanish is less than fluent? This is apparently a tricky one in any language. Even in Mexico, “Águilas de Veracruz” is not entirely unknown. Anyone familiar with North American sports sees the name of an animal and a geographic designation and figures, “OK, I got this.” I’ll admit, my brain sort of locked up and refused to process when I first came across the name, which is how I became aware of the club’s history. It doesn’t make sense otherwise, any more than, say, “Nippon Ham Fighters.”

On the last Sunday of every month, the Boardroom at Ace Hotel New York hosts Action Equals History — a unique opportunity for New Yorkers to learn hands-on in a technology training/workshop session about the mechanics, practices and benefits of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects. This is an opportunity for all to gather, share and work collectively towards a more robust account of history.

For this month, we'll focus on Wikipedia casual editing, ways to use and develop Wikidata, building better edit-a-thon tools for a variety of different thematic campaigns, and user-testing them with the community. Towards a goal of advancing these tools for wider use with diverse local groups.

Greetings! I appreciate your good faith edit to Fissure of the nipple. There is no reliable and acceptable medical reference that I can find to support the content of the article. Fissure of the nipple is a medical condition and by consensus in Project Medicine, all sources for the article are supposed to be from medical textbooks, systematic reviews and meta-analysis from the past five years, official medical organizations, professional medical organizations, and governmental health websites. I looked and couldn't find any reference to this condition in the references I looked at. This article or its redirect will be discussed at Articles for deletion with the same rationale. Feel free to leave a message on my talk page. You are also free to revert your own edit so that readers of the encyclopedia will not end up being confused by unsourced content.

I think a new article called Jogger's nipple is seriously a great idea! Right now that is a redirect but I imagine that 'jogger's nipple' is a real medical term. @Barbara (WVS): I don't believe that Wikipedia:Blow it up and start over applies here. I think a better course of action would be to ask an administrator to delete the Jogger's nipple redirect to Fissure of the nipple, then move Fissure of the nipple to Jogger's nipple, then gradually improve the article by adding the appropriate citations & content referencing those citations. The proper course for a poor article on a notable subject is not to delete it, but to improve it. Peaceray (talk) 11:34, 3 August 2017 (UTC)

I gave up when I posted it to the Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism a couple of times, only to see it passed over & deleted without comment the second time. I think that the adminstrator attending to the noticeboard at the time was not concerned about the type of disruptive edits that 72.76.109.199 was making. Sunday October 15: Wikipedia @ Open House New York / Weekend Photo Competition

This event is the concluding "upload party" to the Wikipedia @ Open House New York Weekend photo scavenger hunt, and an accompanying Wikimedia Commons tutorial and multimedia hackathon,

Learn how to work with your photos to illustrate New York City articles!

Note that this is part of the larger Open House New York Weekend activities on Saturday and Sunday, when sites normally closed to the public are open for public visits and photography.

If you can, bring your camera/photos to the event, and a laptop if you'd like to engage in adding photos to articles. But this is not necessary.

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our monthly "WikiWednesday" evening salon (7-9pm) and knowledge-sharing workshop at Babycastles gallery by 14th Street / Union Square in Manhattan.

We will include a look at the organization and planning for our chapter, and expanding volunteer roles for both regular Wikipedia editors and new participants.

We will also follow up on plans for recent and upcoming edit-a-thons, museum and library projects, education initiatives, and other outreach activities.

We welcome the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement and from all educational and cultural institutions interested in developing free knowledge projects.

After the main meeting, pizza/chicken/vegetables and refreshments and video games in the gallery!

Apologies for my unsourced edits

Mr. Peaceray,

I sincerely apologize for adding unsourced materials to Ann Dunham and other pages. I appreciate your integrity and accountability when it comes to editing on Wikipedia. I do not mean to add content without sourcing it (something I'm still working on) but do have some interesting opinions on what I'm reading, especially on people like Ann Dunham and other figures and concepts I come across on Wikipedia (no destructive intentions, I assure you). Whatever happens, please do not block me from editing such pages. I hope you don't think I'm a bad person for making these changes (even if done unprofessionally).

In other news, I admire how interested you are in the Wikipedia/Literary lifestyle and attend various talks and conferences on this. I'd like to get into that too if possible. Do you have any suggestions as to how?

I appreciate the constructive criticism you have given me and hope to hear from you soon.

Sunday November 19, 10:30 am - 4:00pm: Metropolitan Museum of Art Edit-a-thon

The Wikipedia Asian Month Edit-a-thon @ The Met will be the Metropolitan Museum of Art's second edit-a-thon, hosted on Sunday November 19, 2017 in the Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education (81st Street entrance) at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City.

Following the first Met edit-a-thon in May 2017, the museum is excited to work with Wikipedia Asian Month for the potential to seed new articles about Asian artworks, artwork types, and art traditions, from any part of Asia. These can be illustrated with thousands of its recently-released images of public domain artworks available for Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse Asian collections onsite and remotely.

10:30 am - 4:00 pm in Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Uris Center for Education
81st Street entrance, Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 Fifth Avenue

Attendees should bring their own laptops and power cords. Light snacks, drinks and cake will be provided.

We also welcome remote participation for the global online Wikipedia Asian Art Month, running November 1-30.

ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, Peaceray. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Hey there; oops I double checked the link and indeed it is to the symposium (I had it confused with another link which was a direct "buy this book" page). However, I do have serious doubts about anything on that website being cited as a reliable source for wikipedia, or being given prominence anywhere. The author appears to have no qualifications as an historian or art critic, is largely self published, and espouses a number of what can only be described as unusual theories that are not at all supported by any legitimate historian or art theorist (for instance, that Leonardo da Vinci married Isabella of Aragon, Duchess of Milan, and they had several children together?!). Even in that particular symposium article, the only cites are to her own work; the majority of the portraits on the page have NOT been identified as Catherine Sforza by anyone but herself; quite a few have been attributed to other artists and as being of other people. For instance, fig.3, which is actually of Caterina, is attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, not that it appears in any known catalogues of his works. And thats just a start...
