Recent changes

• You can no longer read Wikimedia wikis if your browser use very old TLS. This is because it is a security problem for everyone. It can lead to downgrade attacks. Since 9 December you just see a warning. Soon the browser will not connect to the wikis at all. Most are users on Android systems older than 4.4. You can read the browser recommendations. [2]
• Special:LinkSearch has been moved from the "Redirecting special pages" section on Special:SpecialPages to the "Lists of pages" section. [3]

Changes later this week

• Wikis can protect pages so that only some users can edit them. The standard protection levels are Require autoconfirmed or confirmed access and Require administrator access. If your wiki use more protection levels the technical name might be renamed for standardisation. This doesn't affect what users see. [4]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 January. It will be on all wikis from 16 January (calendar).

Future changes

• Deepcat and Catgraph will stop working. This will happen at the end of January. This is because you can now use the normal search function instead. [5]
• You can use <ref follow="…"> to merge footnotes that follow each other. It is meant to be used for digitised books on Wikisource. If the order of the footnotes is wrong no error was shown but the bad <ref> was shown outside the <references /> list. This will change and you will see an error message instead. [6]

• There is JavaScript code on Special:Undelete for administrators that makes it possible to automatically select multiple checkboxes by holding the "Shift" key and clicking. Problems

• Readers who were not logged in briefly saw the interface in a language decided by their browser. It should normally be in the language of the wiki. This happened for a short period of time last week. This was because of a bug. [17]

Changes later this week

• If you forget your password you can ask for a new one to be sent to your email address. You need to know your email address or your username. You will now be able to choose that you need to enter both your email address and your username. This will be a preference. This is to get fewer password reset emails someone else asked for. [18]
• When you asked for a new password you could see if the username didn't exist on Special:PasswordReset. Now the page will show the username you entered and tell you an email has been sent if the username exists. This is for better security. [19]
• On Special:WhatLinksHere you can see what other pages link to a page. You can see if the link is from a redirect. You can now see which section the redirect links to. [20]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 3 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 4 March. It will be on all wikis from 5 March (calendar).

• The developers are working on a new interface to solve edit conflicts on talk pages. You can give feedback. [21]
• There is a vote on the creation of a new user group called abuse filter manager. The vote runs from March 1 to March 31 on Meta.
• wgMFSpecialCaseMainPage was used for the mobile site. It was deprecated in 2017. It will stop working in April. Wikis should see if they use it. If they do they should fix it. You can read more and ask for help. This affects 183 wikis. There is a list. [22]

Please read WP:BRD and WP:CONSENSUS again. user General Iroh, the Dragon of the West made a bold edit ([32]), that I contested afterwards, and then you contested my edit. Hence none of his version, none of my version gained consensus, so I legally unlink that part according to the rules, since I opened a discussion in the talk, and we concluded we don't have consensus (as as well that the original linking was no ok). So with your misinterpration of the rules you've made this warning as a mistake, since I did not do any uncronstructive edit, on the contrary!

As result your statement of arbitrarily enforce your own point of view in your edits is false, you did this by reverting my unlinking, since than you support a version that a same way does not have consensus, so worst case the article should have been rolled back before any of the subjects mentioned edited.

Hello, I did a modification in the page of Demographics of sexual orientation because it says that "The World Health Organization estimates a worldwide prevalence of men who have sex with men between 3 and 16%" If you follow the reference of the study used you will see that the information of "3 and 16%" is reported by Frontline AIDS, formerly known as the International HIV/AIDS Alliance (IHAA), so this is not the World Health Organization and therefore it should be amended. You are largely correct. There is a redirect for both International HIV/AIDS Alliance & International HIV/AIDS Alliance (IHAA) that goes to Frontline AIDS. I think it is better to use the orginal author name as that is more direct & less confusing. Sometimes when hastily vetting, I can get confused. Sorry about that.

I have changed Demographics of sexual orientation#General findings to reflect this & to improve the citation. While you can see the changes there, I changed the wikitext to read as so:

I also admonished Behzad Azarmju M.D at Talk:Physical distancing#Move discussion for the move of Social distancing to Physical distancing against consensus after reverting that editor's actions. My subsequent actions have been to keep things tidy at Talk:Physical distancing#Move discussion & Talk:Social distancing#A second request for move 16 April 2020. Wendy Carlos Gender Dysphoria

Thanks Peaceray for the correction of my language. I will remove the word "moronic" but I'm leaving in "bullying" because there's no other way to describe the belligerence displayed by the editors who insist on bolding a deadname in the lede. I will do this out of respect for the "feelings" of these moronic editors. I wish they could show the same courtesy toward Wendy.Rcarlberg (talk) 15:35, 6 May 2020 (UTC)

Peaceray, I researched long and hard before I made my edit, and I decided highlighting "one of the first public figures" was unnecessary. Three reasons for my decision: 1) if you go the the Wikipedia article on "sex reassignment surgery" Wendy isn't even one of the patients mentioned. Therefore, calling her special in her own article seems hypocritical. 2) if you read the Wikipedia article on Harry Benjamin, who counseled Wendy, it lists patients undergoing gender dysphoria treatment in 1951, 1952, 1954, 1958, 1961 and 1963. Therefore Wendy's surgery in 1972 may NOT have been "one of the first public figures" afterall. 3) By highlighting Wendy's surgery, perhaps counterfactually, one elevates its importance when it is not, and should not be, the lead story on this composer. @TGH7: I am not sure where to start, but I will point you to key information.

• If you use VisualEditor, please see the sections on editing references & editing links (Wikilinks). This will do for regular text. Editing tables is more complex.
• For editing Wikitext / Wiki markup, I recommend that you get used to this in your sandbox, User:TGH7/sandbox (turn that WP:REDLINK to blue). Please see the Help:Sandbox tutorial for more help on this. This may be particularly helpful for getting the knack of editing tables. Make liberal use of the Show preview button whenever you are editing Wikitext.
• For guidance on creating references, see H:FOOT / Help:Footnotes
• If you want to create your own citation to add to the Wikitext, I recommend using https://tools.wmflabs.org/citer/. You can drop in a URL (or ISBN or digital object identifier (DOI)) into the URL/DOI/ISBN field then Submit, & it will return a ref/citation in the named reference field. The citation that it returns in the Shortened footnote and citation field would be useful in the Further reading section for paper publications & External links for external URLs.
• I recommend reading Wikipedia:Citing sources & Wikipedia:Reliable sources so that you will know how not to run afoul of Wikipedia's verifiability policy.

I know that is a lot to throw at you, but if you get good with those, you will rarely have a problem. I would stay away from anything involving living people initially until you get the hang of things. Once you do, then you can be bold & also seek consensus where necessary (please see the BOLD, revert, discuss cycle).

• There is a new beta version of the Wikimedia Commons app for Android. It has a new zoom function when you look at images. It can also suggest places when you upload geotagged photos. [67]

• There was a problem with the Commons database on 27 May. Commons could not be edited for eight minutes. Because of this problem the database was moved. This caused another short read-only time on 29 May. [68][69][70]
• The Vector skin had a problem where you couldn't add links to the article in other languages. You couldn't see the section if there were no links to other languages already. It also removed content translation links and links to language settings. This has now been fixed. [71]

Guild of Copy Editors June 2020 Newsletter Hello and welcome to the June newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since March 2020. You can unsubscribe from our mailings at any time; see below. All times and dates stated are in UTC. Current events Election time: Nomination of candidates in our mid-year Election of Coordinators opened on 1 June, and voting will take place from 00:01 on 16 June. GOCE coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought about helping out at the Guild, or you know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here. June Blitz: This blitz begins at 00:01 on 14 June and ends at 23:59 on 20 June, with themes of articles tagged for copyedit in May 2020 and requests. Drive and blitz reports March Drive: Self-isolation from coronavirus may have played a hand in making this one of our most successful backlog elimination drives. The copy-editing backlog was reduced from 477 to a record low of 118 articles, a 75% reduction. The last four months of 2019 were cleared, reducing the backlog to three months. Fifty requests were also completed, and the total word count of copy-edited articles was 759,945. Of the 29 editors who signed up, 22 completed at least one copy edit. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. April Blitz: This blitz ran from 12 to 18 April with a theme of Indian military history. Of the 18 people who signed up, 14 copyedited at least one article. Participants claimed a total of 60 copyedits. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. May Drive: This event marked the 10th anniversary of the GOCE's copy-editing drives, and set a goal of diminishing the backlog to just one month of articles, as close to zero articles as possible. We achieved the goal of eliminating all articles that had been tagged prior to the start of the drive, for the first time in our history! Of the 51 editors who signed up, 43 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Other news Progress report: as of 2 June, GOCE participants had processed 328 requests since 1 January, which puts us on pace to exceed any previous year's number of requests. As of the end of the May drive, the backlog stood at just 156 articles, all tagged in May 2020. Outreach: To mark the 10th anniversary of our first Backlog Elimination Drive, The Signpost contributor and GOCE participant Puddleglum2.0 interviewed project coordinators and copy-editors for the journal's April WikiProject Report. • Some articles have tables that can be sorted in different ways. For example a list of countries can be sorted alphabetically but you can click on the size column to sort them by size. If you clicked on the column a second time it would sort the countries from the bottom to the top instead. A third click will now take you back to the original sorting. [73]
• Self-closed tags now work as in the HTML5 specifications. This means you should stop using some of them. <b/> is an example of a self-closed tag that won't work. area, base, br, col, embed, hr, img, input, keygen, link, meta, param, source, track, wbr can be self-closed. Pages with tags that should not be self-closed have been listed in a tracking category since 2016. They will be listed in Special:LintErrors/self-closed-tag. This doesn't affect <references /> or <ref />. [74]
• There is a banner called WikidataPageBanner. It is for example used by the Wikivoyages, Wikimedia Russia and the Catalan, Basque, Galician and Turkish Wikipedias. It will now been seen by mobile visitors too. Before this it was only seen on desktop. hello, i am Videogamefan837, and i was looking at the wikipedia article when i was looking for how much value bitcoin was in 2009, but it said basically nothing, so i decided to calculate myself based on what evidence i did have, which was someone paying $27 in 2009 for 2000 bitcoins, so i calculated from their, however, since they were just calculated, i didnt have a source for my conclusions, so thats how that happened — Preceding unsigned comment added by Videogamefan837 (talk • contribs) 09:12, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

Biographies vs Autobiographies

While most of the time, we only edit other people's biographies, is it possible to do up our own? The only issue I can see is finding appropriate citations, since my history is difficult to track at times. Since I'm using a pseudonym on here, I'm not really wanting to do some of it on my wiki-editors page. Although there are people who know me by this name as well as my legal name. • Toolforge hosts several tools created by the Wikimedia community like edit counters or enhanced editors. It is changing the domain from tools.wmflabs.org to toolforge.org. The routing scheme is moving from tools.wmflabs.org/toolname to toolname.toolforge.org. You can read the details. Tools that use OAuth will have to be updated to keep working. You can ask for help.

Problems

• There is a Wikidata item link in the sidebar on many pages. This disappeared for a couple of days for users who have the Monobook skin. This was because of a bug. It has now been fixed. [79]
• Editing, logging in and logging out didn't work properly for a short period of time last week. It was soon fixed. [80]

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 June. It will be on all wikis from 18 June (calendar).

Future changes

• Pywikibot is a Python library to automate work on wikis. It will not support Python 2 after the new version in July. Support for Python 3.4 and MediaWiki below 1.19 will also be dropped. You should migrate to Python 3. You can ask for help. [81]
• The selectors .menu and .vectorMenu will no longer work in the Vector skin. This can affect gadgets and user scripts. .menu should be replaced by ul. .vectorMenu should be replaced by .vector-menu. [82]

Howard Markel page

Hi Peaceray,

I believe your concerns regarding Howard Markel's entry have been addressed since you added the tags to his page in January, 2020. Would you be comfortable removing those tags now? While I did not write the material about which you expressed concern (re: his book The Kelloggs) I have written some material on the page and did work at the research center directed by Howard Markel from 2012 - 2015. I can declare this potential conflict wherever it is most appropriate.

Help Sir

Hello Mr. Peaceray. Hope you are well during this pandemic. I was someone you helped last year when I started working on contributions on wiki. There is a situation unfolding on the Swaminarayan Sampradaya page that maybe you could help on. Some users have clearly picked one branches sources. Yesterday a couple IP addresses removed a lot of biased contents (some of which I could corroborate with independent sources and I did). Some Was not supportable so I reverted it. Now it has devolved into a undo match. I think you would be the perfect neutral party or even some guidance would be nice. I have tried to stay neutral in all this and respectful. I see merit on both sides but the BAPS side is removing anything they don't like that the IP adds and the IP is removing stuff they feel is BAPS specific. I proposed a neutral consensus/resolution. I proposed that the page remain strictly to temples, idols and scriptures created by Swaminarayan himself and it link off to each branch where that branches ideology can be outlined. That page is currently dominated by one branch, using one branches documents, in this case all Baps books, for support would violate the (Wikipedia:Neutrality of sources) policy by my understanding as they have a vested interest being one branch within the Swaminarayan family. Even from imagery, there is 10 images on that page and 7 are from BAPS and 3 specifically highlight their leader even tho the image is suppose to be something else. The IP's do raise a very valid point about this. Similarly, the IP'S posted some accusatory text, which they used a citation already being used by BAPS, which the 3 baps editors are removing saying that content "does not merit inclusion" since it is negative about them. its just endless back and forth at this point.

I feel my proposal of using only original swaminarayan sources for any claims on that page, then linking to each branch, seems like a very reasonable middle ground but literally no one is willing to talk about consensus and just undoing each other. You were an awesome guide early on and extremely helpful and respectful and knowledgeable on the topic. As well as being a veteran wiki contributor. I would appreciate any feedback. @Kbhatt22: First, I am going to recommend that you look at WP:Dispute resolution requests. I have used WP:Third opinion then add your own dispute to good effect. There is also the WP:Dispute resolution noticeboard. Please see WP:Dispute resolution requests/Guide, too.

I recognize that there is urgency to this situation. Normally I might have time over the weekend to attend to a matter like this, but I am in the process of moving my residence. I will check in as I am able, but I do recommend pursuing the dispute resolution processes.

Even between my reach out yesterday to now, the page has been locked down, people are getting flagged/banned, there is dialogue spread over 5-6 different pages. A few other people are chiming in at least for mutual consensus so its not a lop sided discussion. If it continues, I will totally go down the dispute workflow you provided. • Some users have trouble logging in. This is probably a browser cookie problem. The developers are working on understanding the problem. If you have trouble logging in you can see the details on Phabricator. [101]

• A bug in the Wikibase extension had disabled the "move" and "create" types of protection in the main (Gallery) namespace on Wikimedia Commons. New protections could not be added, and existing protections were not enforced, allowing some page moves and page creations that should not have been possible. This has now been fixed. [111]

• The video player will change to be simpler and more modern. This week, the current beta feature will become the video player for everyone on most non-Wikipedia wikis. The old player will be removed. [112]

• The mobile skin displays a message at the bottom of the page about who edited last. This message showed raw wikitext. This has now been fixed. Some messages in Structured Discussions and content translation may still appear as raw wikitext. Developers are working on it. [116]

• If you revert an edit using the undo link your edit is marked with an undo tag. This will now only happen if you don't change anything in the edit window before publishing the undo. This is to keep users from marking edits as undos when they actually do something else. [119]
• The new OOUI version will not work with Internet Explorer 8. This means the wikis will look strange and not work well in Internet Explorer 8. This was reported in Tech/News/2020/17. This is because keeping the wikis working with very old browsers creates other problems. [120]

Public vs. private UK schools

I don't want you to get into an edit war with Robolizik but I think that s/he is correct in their edit on Rosalind Franklin in saying that St Paul's Girls' School is a public school in the British sense — see Private school (UK) which correctly redirects to Independent school (United Kingdom). In other words, the school would have been fee-paying but like Eton College the British usually call these public schools because anyone with the cash — or a bursary — can go there. I think that the article on Franklin would be best if the lede were to be changed to "Franklin was educated at a public day school at Norland Place" or use "independent" instead of "public", which is the modern word that St Paul's Girls' School itself now uses. Turnbull and Robolizik: Laura Anderson's Rosalind Franklin. states "Rosalind attended a private school in London called Norland Place." & "Her parents sent her to a boarding school on the Coast of England called Lindores School for Young Ladies." Jenifer Glynn in My Sister Rosalind Franklin. states "When she was nine Roaslind left Norland Place, the private day school nearby, and was sent for a couple of years to Lindores, a boarding school in Sussex, [...]". Looking at this again, I think we may all be correct, depending on one's use of language. Franklin attended 3 schools (see body of the article). At age 6 she went to the Norland Place school, whose website now "doesn't mention her (or any pupil) in history section". but does emphasise large fees (now over £5,000 a term). Then she went, aged 9, to the Lindores school. Finally, aged 11 she went to St Paul's Girls' School whose website "does mention Franklin".. The issue is therefore whether the lede should be consistent about fee-paying. If Norland was "private", St Paul's is "private" also and arguably more important since this was Franklin's senior school. Maybe a note to explain would help. I will peruse the various sources for more clarity. This is a problem with editors, myself included, who are US-based & are accustomed to US English (& went to the US variant of parochial, private, & public schools). • Normally pages can be moved to a title that has no existing page yet or to a page that has only one revision, which is a redirect to the page to be moved. A new user right allows editors to move pages over one-revision pages that redirect to anywhere. [125]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 September. It will be on all wikis from 10 September (calendar).
• All MediaWiki API modules will now use watchlist instead of watch. This was inconsistent before. [126]

Future changes

• The Wikipedia Android app team might work on patrolling tools in the future. You can let them know what tools would be useful for you or for less experienced patrollers. See the page on mediawiki.org.
• OTRS will be updated to a new version. This will probably take around two days. OTRS agents will not have access to the system during these days. Emails that come in during the update will be delivered when the update is done. The plan is to start around 08:00 UTC on 14 September. This could change. [127]
• The Wikipedia Android app will send push notifications if users want them. This could help you see for example when someone wrote on your talk page or your edit was reverted. This will need Google Play Services to work. It will also be possible to get the app without Google Play Services but push notifications will not work. Google Play Services is also used to make the app work for Android 4.4 users. [128][129]
• Wikimedia code review could move to GitLab. It would be hosted on Wikimedia servers. You can take part in the consultation.
• Dropdown menus in the Vector skin use a .menu class. This will not work in the future. Scripts can use nav ul instead. .vectorTabs and .vectorMenu will also not work. Some scripts need to be updated. You can read more in Phabricator.

Self-citation

Hello, you left a comment on my talk page to remind me that " A conflict of interest includes linking to articles that you have written." I just want to say that I'm not aiming bare self-promotion. I'm about to add information to the Hawaiian language article on the history of language policies in Hawaii and I assumed it was OK citing my own work given that I did a lot of research on the topic for my MA degree at the University of Hawaii, especially since nobody else has researched it yet, as far as I was told there by professors. I merely wanted to start by adding my publications to the reference list before editing the article and quote them in the most concise way. Also, I have no other conflict of interests. I'm not paid by anyone to do these edits.

Besides, do you have any advice about how to proceed to add this information? Is it OK to edit the page itself or should I start the changes in the article's Talk page? --Rubèn Fernández Asensio (talk) 15:05, 14 September 2020 (UTC)

@Rubèn Fernández Asensio: I well may have been overdoing it with the COI notification. I think as long as you adhere to WP:SELFCITE & maybe add a note to the talk page that you are the author, the article is in a peer-reviewed journal, & that it is relevant to the topic, you should be fine. We do see a lot of WP:CITESPAM on particular topics. Language articles tends not to be one of them. You might add that you are adding the note upon my advice discussing it with me (After discussing it with {{u|Peaceray}}, ..."). That should show due diligence. Not that I am an arbiter, but I have a significant amount of edits to my credit.

Although I would like it that experts hold sway, this is not always the case. For instance:

Guild of Copy Editors September 2020 Newsletter Hello and welcome to the September GOCE newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since June 2020.                  Current and upcoming events September Drive: Our current backlog-elimination drive is open until 23:59 on 30 September (UTC) and is open to all copy editors. Sign up today! Election reminder: our end-of-year Election of Coordinators opens for nominations on 1 December. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here. Drive and Blitz reports June Blitz: An uncorrected typo (even copy editors make copy editing mistakes!) led to an eight-day "leap blitz" from 14 to 21 June, focusing on requests and articles tagged in May. 19 participating editors claimed 54 copy edits. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. July Drive: Over 750,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event, keeping pace with the previous three self-isolated drives. Of the 38 people who signed up, 30 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here. August Blitz: From 16 to 22 August, we copy edited articles tagged in June and July 2020 and requests. 12 participating editors completed 37 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Other news June election: Jonesey95 was chosen to continue as lead coordinator, assisted by Baffle gab1978, Tdslk, Twofingered Typist, and first-time coordinator Puddleglum2.0. Recent changes

• Admins can now see links to diffs of deleted revisions on Special:AbuseLog. This uses the interface of Special:Undelete. [135]
• Editors are automatically added to some user groups. For example editors are added to autoconfirmed users when they have edited enough times and long enough. Abuse filters can hinder users from automatically getting user rights for a period of time. They can also remove rights user have. Wikis can now ask to change how long this period of time is for their wiki in Phabricator. It is currently five days. [136]

Problems

• Last year some abuse filters stopped working because of a new change. If they tried to use variables that were unavailable for that action they would fail. This has now been fixed. [137]

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 29 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 30 September. It will be on all wikis from 1 October (calendar).

Future changes

• You can't see the language links to other language versions from the talk page or history page. They are also not shown when you edit an article. This could change. It is not decided if for example the history page should link to another history page or to the article. You can take part in the discussion in Phabricator.
• The link colours could change. This is to make the difference between links and other text more clear. You can read more in Phabricator.
• In your preferences you can choose to get different notifications on the web or by email. You will see Apps as one of the alternatives later this week. This is because the Android and iOS Wikipedia apps will use push notifications for those who want them. You can see the preferences on the test wiki. The goal is to have push notifications on Android in October and on iOS in early 2021. [138]
• You can soon put pages on your watchlist for a limited time. This could be useful if you want to watch something for a shorter time but don't want it on your watchlist forever. It now works on mediawiki.org and will come to more wikis later. You can read more and see when it will come to other wikis.

• There is a new tool where you can see which home wiki users have in discussions on Meta. This can help show which communities are not part of the discussion on wikis where we make decisions that affect many other wikis.
• You can now thank users for file uploads or for changing the language of a page. [139]

Problems

• There were many errors with the new MediaWiki version last week. The new version was rolled back. Updates that should have happened last week are late. [140]
• Everyone was logged out. This was because a user reported being logged in to someone else's account. The problem should be fixed now. [141]
• Many pages have JavaScript errors. You can read more and now see a list of user scripts with errors.

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 6 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 7 October. It will be on all wikis from 8 October (calendar).
• Letters immediately after a link are shown as part of the link. For example the entire word in [[Child]]ren is linked. On Arabic wikis this works at both the start and end of a word. Previously on Arabic wikis numbers and other non-letter Unicode characters were shown as part of the link at the start of a word but not at the end. Now only Latin and Arabic letters will extend links on Arabic wikis. [142]

• Some gadgets and user-scripts use the HTML div with the ID #jump-to-nav. This div will be removed soon. Maintainers should replace these uses with either #siteSub or #mw-content-text. A list of affected scripts is at the top of phab:T265373.

Guidance on edit war message on talk page

Hello! I just wanted to get your advice regarding when it is proper to remove messages on my talk page and I went to you because you welcomed me to Wikipedia back in 2016. In 2016, I got into an edit war that thankfully did not get out of hand and a message from a (now-retired) senior user reminded me of the possible repercussions of edit warring. The message has remained on my talk page ever since. I was wondering what your opinion would be regarding if I were to remove this message and whether that would violate any of Wikipedia's etiquette guidelines.

@Sdrqaz: Hi! WP:OWNTALK would apply here. As that behavioral guideline indicates, Although archiving is preferred, users may freely remove comments from their own talk pages. Users may also remove some content in archiving. The removal of a warning is taken as evidence that the warning has been read by the user.

I prefer archiving myself (see Help:Archiving a talk page). Archiving would get your aforementioned discussion off of your current talk page. However, you are free to simply delete it. Peaceray (talk) 04:46, 30 October 2020 (UTC)

Recent changes

• You can no longer read Wikimedia wikis if your browser uses very old TLS. This is because it is a security problem for everyone. It could lead to downgrade attacks. Since October 29, 2020, users who use old TLS versions will not be able to connect to Wikimedia projects. A list of browser recommendations is available. All modern operating systems and browsers are always able to reach Wikimedia projects. [157]
• There is a new automatic tracking category available: Pages with non-numeric formatnum arguments. It collects pages which use the {{formatnum}} parser function with invalid (non-numeric) input, e.g. {{formatnum:TECHNEWS}}. Note that {{formatnum:123,456}} is also invalid input: as described in the documentation, the argument should be unformatted so that it can be reliably and correctly localised. The tracking category will help identify problematic usage and double-formatting. The new tracking category's name can be translated at translatewiki. [158]

This change excludes the English, Russian, and German-language Wikipedias, plus a few smaller Wikipedias with special circumstances. • A discussion has been restarted about using a Unicode minus sign (− U+2212) in the output of {{formatnum}} when it is given a negative argument. [161]
• In the future IP addresses of unregistered users will not be shown for everyone. They will get an alias instead. There will be a new user right or an opt-in function for more vandal fighters to see the IPs of unregistered users. There would be some criteria for who gets the user right or opt-in. There will also be other new tools to help handle vandalism. This is early in the process and the developers are still collecting information from the communities before they suggest solutions.

 Thank you for your welcome.  I am fairly new at participating in Wikipedia.  I like to read and study a lot (maybe too much!) and am a bit of a perfectionist. I try always try be open to new information.  You saw my contribution to 'Spanish flu' talk.  I tried to add something to that today, but it wouldn't let me login to edit my previous writing.  I was able to add the new information as a separate reply.

I wonder if I accidently inserted this (<ref></ref>) into the page, because I notice there is now a citation error tagged.

P.S. Oh,oh...! I think I did add the erroneous "<ref></ref>" when I tried to edit the Talk page for the first time. And worse, I screwed up the Talk article I was commenting on. I thought I had to reproduce the whole article when I added something, and I repasted the wiki page as text only, thus zeroing out all the previous links! I hope you have a backup of the page!

@Deardavid7: No problems, just learning opportunities. The main thing that I was trying to indicate was that it is customery to sighn your posts on a talk page, normally by placing four tildes, ~~~~, after your comment.

Also, no need to put your email on pages. If you have associated your email with your account for password reset purposes, people can email you from this page: Special:EmailUser/Deardavid7, which others can navigate to when they see the Email this user link on your talk page.

@JenOttawa: OK, thanks for letting me know! I do a lot of recent change patrolling of the 5,000+ pages on my watchlist. One of the things that I look for is registered users with a red-linked (non-existant) talk page. I like to invite newly registered users with the {{Welcome-menu}}, which IMHO serves as a handy collection of links for most of what one would want to know about English Wikipedia & how it works.

Because I am looking to correct vandalism, welcome new editors, notify or warn editors when they make mistakes, & make incremental improvements to new edits, I do not typically do not drill down into school project pages, as I make lots of semi-automated edits with RedWarn, Twinkle, & reFill. I appreciate that you have let me know about yours, & I particularly like that you have emphasized WP:MEDRS & related pages. Forgive me if I stepped on any toes with my semi-automated editing. Although there are many wonderful school Wikipedia editing project, there are some in which the students are relatively unsupported; hence the reason I sometimes include the {{Welcome student}} template when I have seen a previously blank talk page for a student editor. My goal is to be quick & welcoming, although sometimes I recognize that my actions be redundant or superfluous.

The best way to avoid recent change patrol editors like myself from inadvertently getting in your way might be to craft your project's own welcoming message & post it to student editor talk pages. Thanks for the quick response. It is no problem at all that you reached out to the student. It is great to know there are volunteers welcoming new editors! I just meant if you saw the dashboard and worked through all the 110 students that it is not necessary! That is great advice you have to include a template on their talk page. I manually added a student template on their user page and sandbox but not their talk page! I agree about your observations on student editing. It is very labour intensive to monitor all edits, but I think it is super important to leave the article contributions high-quality and following Wikipedia's guideline for reliable sources and the manual of style. Many medical professionals/researchers have difficulty transitioning to MEDRS as we have been trained to use the primary sources when writing academic papers. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate in the 2020 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. Requested edit to Salma Hayek

Hello! I saw you edited the Salma Hayek page last. I cannot edited it since I am not verified. I have a video that proves that Salma acquired the Lebanese citizenship through her father in the Lebanese Embassy of Mexico in 2009. The video is in Arabic, but it shows that her grandfather, who emigrated from Lebanon, registered her son, Salma's father in the embassy, and then Salma registered herself and acquired the citizenship later in 2009. Her family is entirely registered in the village of Baabdat in Mount Lebanon, including her brother. Therefore she is also Lebanese. Guild of Copy Editors December 2020 Newsletter Hello and welcome to the December GOCE newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since September 2020.                  Current and upcoming events Election time: our end-of-year Election of Coordinators opened for nominations on 1 December and will close on 15 December at 23:59 (UTC). Voting opens at 00:01 the following day and will continue until 31 December at 23:59, just before Auld Lang Syne. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here. December Blitz: This will run from 13 to 19 December, and will target all Requests. Sign up now. Drive and Blitz reports September Drive: 67 fewer articles had copy-edit templates by this month's close. Of the 27 editors who signed up, 15 copy-edited at least one article, and 124 articles were claimed for the drive. October Blitz: this ran from 18 to 24 October, and focused on articles tagged for copy-edit in July and August 2020, and all Requests. Of the 13 who signed up, 11 editors copy-edited at least one article. 21 articles were claimed for the blitz. November Drive: Of the 18 editors who signed up, 15 copy-edited at least one article, and together claimed 134 articles. At the close of the drive, 67 fewer articles were in the backlog and we had dealt with 39 requests. Other news Progress report: As of 09:05, 3 December 2020 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors had processed 663 requests (18 from 2019) since 1 January and there were 52 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. Airbnb/Aimco

Hi Graywalls, thanks for your comments - I've been more active on the German Wikipedia (see https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spezial:Beiträge/Hattifnatt~dewiki), and to be honest, the technicalities of Wikipedia habe grown over my head a bit in the last years ;) but I still try to contribute when I see reason for it. In this case the mention of Aimco seemed to me like a thinly veiled attempt at self-promotion or even self-advocacy (with unclear grammar), so more a COI on their part, after they apparently even lost the case in court if I correctly understood the referenced page https://www.courthousenews.com/airbnb-ducks-apartment-managers-beef-over-rentals/. I haven't been able to locate the crucial change, but the version from 21 Nov 2018 had a more balanced account in the section "2018 legal action".

According to the British Nationality Act 1948 article, that act created the status of "Citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies" (CUKC) as the national citizenship of the United Kingdom and its colonies. I believe you are referring to these edits. I think it is good that we both have an understanding that past history is always visible unless redacted by an administrator. Unless an editor has maliciously deleted or altered others comments, I always leave what is posted on my talk page, although other editors have removed posts that they have deemed against policy, such as insults or threats. I may also move it to the proper place it the placement of the comment does not follow WP:TPG.

I do not believe that there are unimportant IP addresses. Most edits from IP addresses are good edits. I have also met a couple of significant editors who say that there very first edit was vandalism before they learned how to make worthwhile contributions. That is why I make it my policy to welcome IP editors as appropriate. Peaceray (talk) 19:48, 20 December 2020 (UTC)

I will note that I have made an exception to my general "no delete" policy. I recently encountered someone who I believe is described by the meta:What is a troll? essay. From that essay, I take this summary: The basic mindset of a troll is that they are far more interested in how others react to their edits than in the usual concerns of Wikipedians: accuracy, veracity, comprehensiveness, and overall quality. Discussion between Bennybooboo78 & myself

I have archived this conversation. Bennybooboo78 alleges here at length that I am "nasty", & have "no right serving in this position", a "lack of ego control" & "blatent ignorance", & etc. I try to explain that Bennybooboo78 should follow the five pillars & the policies & guidelines that derive from them, particularly the necessity of verification from reliable sources. I also suggest that using Wiki markup might help Bennybooboo78's presentation. Neither of us convinces the other. For something more substantial, please see Talk:Peter Kropotkin#I'm new to this.

? I'm wondering if you believe everything you read on the internet without actually reading the source material. A google search is not going to give you an in depth understanding of the material. Granted Kropotkin's opinions evolved and adapted to current situations to continue to push his narrative, some basic things cannot be avoided: such as how can anyone in there objective right mind think that Kropotkin was for globalization and propaganda of the deed (short of maybe regicide) after reading Mutual Aid? if so, they must need some reading comprehension training. I don't care if Professor so and so, wants to say I'm interpreting it wrong! they can take a hike, and so I think Kropotkin would have agreed that a full reliance on an over arching knowledge source or base (of which you only pull from, and do not contribute or investigate yourself is laughable). It is even stated in your own article (before I added anything at all), that he took his ideas of TRUE COMMUNISM from small tribal communities in Siberia (would you call that Marxist or Communist in the Modern sense?) Communism today is not what it was yesterday (let alone centuries ago?) Marxism is specifically addressing modern systems of organization (that are huge), there is no advocation towards the hunter-gatherer lifestyle or mention there of? The newspeak people are hard at work, rewriting traditional interpretations to fit their agenda; I guess old Kropotkin has come on the radar sometime after 2015 when I attended UC as an Anthropology major and did extensive research on his works and contributions (example being I don't remember anyone claiming that Kropotkin advocated violence, his writings repeatedly speak against it but, now everyone is saying he is no different then Emma Goldman?) and I bet not one of these clowns has read a single book of his...have you? I can recognize an argument that is not grounded in reliable sources. If you are a subject matter expert, I doubt that you will have trouble finding reliable sources to support your arguments. You may not see it that way, but I almost always cite Wikipedia policy. I follow no one's orders, but I do heed policy. I also respect the be bold editing guideline & the fifth pillar: Wikipedia has no firm rules. But this is not pandemonium either. To be an organized anarchy demands respect of consensus, & thus I expect other editors to respect Wikipedia's five pillars & the policies & guidelines. If you do not consent to abide by these, you are free to follow the Law of two feet & take your efforts elsewhere. Really, though, we would prefer that you learn how to be respectful of the space & become a constructive contributor. Let me give you a concrete example from the Rainbow Gathering, which has no leaders, that occurred in Michigan in 1983. Someone moved into a peripheral camp & proceeded to dig a latrine across a path & near tents. Other campers filled the latrine & persuaded that camper that they might do better in a more established camp. When other campers moved in, the original campers initially tried to discourage them (once bitten, ...) but ultimately welcomed them when they realized that those new campers knew what they were doing & chipped in. The lesson is don't dig a latrine in the middle of a path, & if someone else does, fill it in. That is essentially the same on Wikipedia. Don't edit to the detriment of Wikipedia (detriment as defined in pillars, policies, guidelines, & common sense), & if someone does, fix it. Depending on whether a page has a level of protection, any editor can revert another editor's edits. If the reversion is not based in policy, those reversions can be challenged. If the edits themselves are non-constructive or against policies & guidelines, then it it is incumbent on editors to revert them. I am not an administrator, so I cannot block anyone. However, other editors & myself can warn other editors about non-constructive edits or policy & guideline violations. After an accumulation of warnings, an admin will review those warnings & edits, & can block an individual for a day or longer or indefinitely, or the admin may decide a block is unwarranted. A blocked editor can appeal a block, & other administrators would generally weigh in. I, myself, do not advise anyone to use Wikipedia in citations unless they are specifically addressing Wikipedia. I do advise people to treat Wikipedia as an introduction to the material, & to dig into the citations if they want to research more. Hence the importance of references. I have continued to ask you to supply references. You have only responded vaguely, writing that I should read a nearly 200 page book. You also write as if you are the expert & should be taken unquestionably as such. That is not how citations work. They usually point at a specific pages. The lack of this information often makes a reader dubious of the writer's familiarity with a work. Please address your proposed edits to Peter Kropotkin at Talk:Peter Kropotkin. You know as well as I do that even brothers in arms (within whatever group rarely agree on everything) so what Anarchy is? is as I have been saying up to individual understanding (I can't help but to think that Kropotkin would agree with me whole heartedly). And yes, I was unfamiliar with how wiki edits works (I thought maybe it was free access, I suppose I was wrong), I assumed I'd be dealing with a moderator who actually had an personal argument based on the readings of the situation to hash it out. Let me ask you? Should I take my car to your mechanic's shop if you don't know what an upper A-arm bushing is...my, answer is most definitely not. So, why would wiki have someone passing judgement over which argument to agree with (when there are always multiple, even amongst experts). I'm more disappointed with how wiki is being run, rather than insisting that you take my argument over Academic Consensus (which rarely ever exists, truly in a pure sense). I've got an anecdote, for you...when I was in school I pretty much had to circumvent the TA's (who were almost always in charge of grading, being Grad Students and learning how to teach properly) constantly-I must have gone to the Professor's personal office a dozen times (twelve different Professors) to make my case, that I was at a disservice being graded by people that did not have the knowledge base to do so-past the basic motions that they were using on their rubric. I was told a lot of this had to do with the fact that on top of being woefully uniformed (since they had no knowledge of the material I was referring too, being I added a lot of my own understanding past the assigned text-though it applied spot on) they also had to skim through the papers, so as to get through them all. How is this fair, sacrificing understanding for efficiency or agenda? every time I went to the Professor I was vindicated...every time. I have the same feeling here, I will concede one thing though-at this moment, I'm not finding any direct assertation backing up my claim-but it seemed to be taken for granted when I researched the matter in 2015, that is his concepts (I thought) were set in stone, not specifically the label Anarcho-Primitive; the word didn't exist during his time, but the concept did (because it is right in your face, after reading his work-which no! I haven't read everything from him-but he sort of repeats his basic ideas over and over book to book, anyways). All you need to read is Mutual Aid, and the Conquest of Bread! that's it? I have yet to hear anyone with a strong knowledge base on the subject (let alone someone who has read anything from him) attempt to debunk what I'm saying-past its not accepted orthodox consensus; how about you show me a reference for that and make your case? I think it might be, that no one has taken the time to point out these obvious issues, in concern to parsing out what people today interpret as Communism as compared to how Russians in the 19th century viewed communism, with a lower case c-let alone Kropotkin's individual understanding. I'm only calling for context, because it seems it would be confusing to the layperson (I'd gather) when we think of Communism now! in connection to the Anarcho-Communist. I'll bet money a lot of people read this wiki page and think he was sympathetic to modern notions of Marxism etc.? though even amongst Marxist's they are always arguing over what he actually meant-there is no real consensus there either only submission. So, my only solution to that is know for yourself...that to me is Anarchism. Another anecdote, when I basically confronted some of these TA's directly-they never had a rebuttal for what I was saying? only that my format was wrong or syntax was another one etc. It bothered me enough that I went to a linguist professor (on his personal time) to get his opinion...he told me that those who brought up these complaints were invalidated in his opinion (go tell James Joyce about format and syntax, he would throw Finnegan's Wake in your face?) that is what editors are for? that was a pitiful red herring/ad hominem. How about you address the subject matter and not its structure? by the way, I never once went to the writing tutor-everyone hated me there and I still got a 3.37 GPA average...explain that? To accuse me of being condescending then turn around & do it yourself is hypocritical, & I have little time for that. I find GPAs irrelevant, as they failed to measure my extra-curricular learning for my BA (2.7) but nevertheless I obtained a 3.9 for my MS. So one was not a great predictor for the other. BTW, I have read Finnegan's Wake. I suggested that you would benefit from H:WIKITEXT because big blobs of text generally are hard to read & interfere with your message. If you would rather not read a map & stumble around not knowing the geography, be my guest, but do not expect the respect you demand. I think you would be best to address your arguments with relevant citations at Talk:Peter Kropotkin. I will revert further comment from you here as a favor to future readers of this talk page, as I now find your words unimportant & do not hear them.
