Smash

Hi. I'd love to create additional articles on Smash players, but I've really only started following the scene with Ultimate and I'm not sure who else other than MKLeo and Tweek has enough coverage to generate a good article. If you have any suggestions, send them my way.

Also, shameless plug, but I have MKLeo prepped for a good article review and intend to do the same for Tweek eventually. The coverage is tournament heavy because that's what I can get from the sources I've been able to find, and MKLeo's was very every-player-he-ever-fought dense before I rewrote it. WikiCup 2020 May newsletter

The second round of the 2020 WikiCup has now finished. It was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 75 points to advance to round 3. There were some very impressive efforts in round 2, with the top ten contestants all scoring more than 500 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 186 good articles achieved in total by contestants, and the 355 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.

Our top scorers in round 2 were:

• Epicgenius, with 2333 points from one featured article, forty-five good articles, fourteen DYKs and plenty of bonus points
• Gog the Mild, with 1784 points from three featured articles, eight good articles, a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews and lots of bonus points
• The Rambling Man, with 1262 points from two featured articles, eight good articles and a hundred good article reviews
• Harrias, with 1141 points from two featured articles, three featured lists, ten good articles, nine DYKs and a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews
• Lee Vilenski with 869 points, Hog Farm with 801, Kingsif with 719, SounderBruce with 710, Dunkleosteus77 with 608 and MX with 515.

The rules for featured article reviews have been adjusted; reviews may cover three aspects of the article, content, images and sources, and contestants may receive points for each of these three types of review. Please also remember the requirement to mention the WikiCup when undertaking an FAR for which you intend to claim points. Remember also that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

Multimedios Televisión renaming question

Since I'm seeing a lot more that they're solely branding with the Canal 6 logo (and all their hashtags and on-air mentions barely mention Multimedios any longer, along with the American/Houston feed using the 6 logo), should we consider a move to Canal 6 (Mexico), or wait on this? I'd like to do the page move, but rightfully so, moving a 25-year old branding to their new one needs to be done with caution. Nate • (chatter) 03:40, 4 May 2020 (UTC)

RE: Hi Sammi Brie, thank you for the message. The reason I reverted your edit was because in my opinion "also on HD Radio" is more fitting, rather than "HD Radio", with absolutely no definition, or clarification. I also think that "also on HD Radio" fits better because just saying "HD Radio" may indicate that the station broadcasts in all-HD digital, so maybe as of now, with WWFD's experimental all-HD tests, and some other AM's beginning all-HD digital testing, it would maybe be best to have two templates, one for all-HD digital (ex. "only on HD Radio"), and one for Analog/HD stations, I hope that we can work out an agreement as to what works best, as Wikipedia has very strict rules about clarification and such.

With regard to your recent post on the DYK discussion page, I think you may have misinterpreted Valereee's reply. At the moment we have a surge in DYK nominations, presumably because the Covid-19 situation has impacted people's lives and therefore their editing habits. I think she was implying that you might like to give this particular hook a miss, and you may have taken this to imply she didn't want TV hooks nominated in general. In fact, DYK is an amalgam of all the different interests of a host of editors, and DYK is there to represent them all, whatever their niche interest. Thanks for the message. I don't agree with the change, though. With "Networks in Mexico" you will have to include all the networks that can be watched in Mexico, which would include most of the American networks, especially those that have stations within Mexico under the authority of the IFT. It should be "Networks of Mexico", that way, even if XHAS-TDT broadcasts Telemundo and LATV or XHRIO-TDT, the CW, no one would think that those networks are of Mexican origin because of the category.--MexTDT (talk) 22:59, 1 June 2020 (UTC)

WANC-TV

Thank you for creating the page, and for all the work you've done already. I started the introductory WISE-TV paragraph on the WYCW page, but I couldn't tell from the sources I had available exactly what happened after it dropped its network affiliations, changed call letters, and moved to Channel 21. @JTRH: I did WISE-TV/WANC-TV as a separate article from WHNS (believe it or not, it's one license history, but it was dark so long and came back in such different form that I opted for a split). One thing that is evident is that nobody cared for a long time! In 1962, the Citizen stopped listing anything other than "Network Programs" for WISE-TV, and listings disappeared for the station altogether two years later. There is basically no info on programming between dropping the NBC affiliation and about 1974 when it apparently became a limited-time satellite of WGGS. If you want to know what WANC-TV was airing in 1970-71 or so, you need to get a time machine. The studios they used in the 70s no longer exist: the land was sold for residential development as "The Thoms Estate". Thanks for the kind words. Sammi Brie (t • c) 16:57, 9 June 2020 (UTC)

I grew up in South Carolina, just over the line from Charlotte. We could get WLOS as clearly as a local station, and yet I'd never heard of WISE/WANC until recently. I'm looking at a Cablevision ad in the Citizen of July 14, 1971, which indicates that it shared a channel on the cable system with Knoxville-area PBS station WSJK. The ad lists it as an NBC affiliate. It apparently got bumped from a full-time cable slot in favor of WKPT Kingsport. That's the only mention of it that I can find - the Citizen TV listings of that era mention that it's on the cable system, but there's no schedule information, and it doesn't seem to have ever appeared in the Carolina-Tennessee Edition of TV Guide. @JTRH: The WANC-TV signal didn't even reach Greenville or Spartanburg. All indications were that when the cable came to Asheville, on behalf of the same company, WISE-TV dropped NBC, but annuals lagged for years in obtaining updated information (which makes sense given what we know). Weird to see that ad. They reorganized their lineup the next year...no NBC seen. This one makes no mention of WANC but I think it is saying that it began its WGGS hookup on September 30, 1973. WikiCup 2020 July newsletter

The third round of the 2020 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it into the fourth round each had at least 353 points (compared to 68 in 2019). It was a highly competitive round, and a number of contestants were eliminated who would have moved on in earlier years. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

• Epicgenius, with one featured article, 28 good articles and 17 DYKs, amassing 1836 points
• The Rambling Man , with 1672 points gained from four featured articles and seventeen good articles, plus reviews of a large number of FACs and GAs
• Gog the Mild, a first time contestant, with 1540 points, a tally built largely on 4 featured articles and related bonus points.

Between them, contestants managed 14 featured articles, 9 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 152 good articles, 136 DYK entries, 55 ITN entries, 65 featured article candidate reviews and 221 good article reviews. Additionally, MPJ-DK added 3 items to featured topics and 44 to good topics. Over the course of the competition, contestants have completed 710 good article reviews, in comparison to 387 good articles submitted for review and promoted. These large numbers are probably linked to a GAN backlog drive in April and May, and the changed patterns of editing during the COVID-19 pandemic. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Sociedad Gestora de Televisión Net TV

Hi Sammi Brie, I'm worried about the article Sociedad Gestora de Televisión Net TV, whose hook I have just moved into Queue 5. The hook devolves around the Spanish Government preventing a deal with Viacom. The article states "However, in 2017, the Spanish government denied the proposed transaction for reciprocity reasons, since it determined that a Spanish company could not own 25 percent of a media outlet in the United States, where Viacom is based." The source for this is in Spanish and difficult to check via Google Translate, but common sense suggests that it is the wrong way round, and the Spanish government wanted to block a 25% stake in the company passing into foreign ownership. @Cwmhiraeth: As weird as it sounds, this is a reciprocity case. Many countries won't let a person from another country own more of a regulated asset than a person of that country could own in theirs. For instance, if a French corporation can own 40% of an asset in a given industry in the United States, then France will let an American corporation own up to 40% of a comparable asset in France. The Spanish government said that because a Spanish media company could not own 25 percent of a US television station, it would not allow Viacom, an American media company, to own 25 percent of SGT Net TV. (What's weird is they did this...even though US foreign ownership is permitted at that level, and more with a waiver and federal approval!) Sammi Brie (t • c) 06:37, 5 July 2020 (UTC)

Community radio stations

Okay, here's what I've found.

• For CHFL-FM, CINJ-FM, CKCP-FM and CKUG-FM, I can find absolutely nothing whatsoever (not even CRTC decisions pertaining to them), so I'll initiate a batch AFD on them.
• For CKTE-FM and CJBA-FM, there's evidence that licences were granted but no verifiable evidence that they ever actually got on the air at all; I literally can't locate any evidence of any other CRTC decisions pertaining to either of them after that, so I'll also list those for AFD.
• For CIFN-FM, I found exactly the same information you already found and added to the article about a temporary administrative renewal with past non-compliance issues. CHWA-FM, CJIK-FM and CJDS-FM are in exactly the same boat, so they'll also require some caution. (In the case of CJIK, however, the last administrative renewal was in 1990, so even if outside sources can be found besides the CRTC decisions alone, they won't Google.)
• CIKO-FM definitely existed, as I do get CRTC decisions for it if I search for "Carcross Radio Society" — but what I can't find is any evidence that "CIKO" was ever its real call sign, as all of the followup decisions refer to it as just "FM Carcross" even where a call sign is demanded (e.g. [4]). So probably the path forward on that one, if we can find sources for it, would be to switch it to an article about Carcross Community School which can mention the radio station.

So I'll initiate the AFDs on the first six, but the other five will need to be handled differently. Bearcat (talk) 16:29, 21 July 2020 (UTC)

@Bearcat: Thanks! Looks like there's some work to be done then. My research is showing CIKO as early as 1999 in Bruce Elving's FM Atlas, and I did find a 2009 Whitehorse Star article that connects some of the missing dots...

Shanahan's enthusiasm also helped his school become the only elementary school in North America to have a CRTC licence for a radio station that broadcasts to the wider community. The programming is done by the students. And while Shanahan told Sloan the call letters CIKO, pronounced "psycho", were assigned by the CRTC, Sloan noted he had his doubts, knowing Shanahan.

That article points to some huge gaps. The school appears to have been renamed "Ghuch Tla Community School" in 2006 (some sources have "Ghuch Tia") since the days of the licence, which explains why we had trouble finding info about the school itself. It serves grades K through 9.

On further investigation, I've found the real story when it comes to CHFL — it's not actually a standalone community radio station, but merely a rebroadcaster of CFYK-FM, so I've redirected that accordingly. And for CKUG, it turns out that while sources are nonexistent if you search on the call sign, they do increase if you search on "Kugluktuk Radio Society", so I'll actually be able to salvage that.

That said, I've initiated Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/CJBA-FM for CJBA and CKTE, and am in the process of formulating Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/CKCP-FM for CKCP and CINJ (so if that's still a red link when you first see this comment, then check back in about five or 10 minutes.) Jackmcbarn A change caused every invalid blank parameter to turn the page up in Category:Pages using infobox radio station with unknown parameters (we've got a sudden backlog of 5,000 pages in that category).
