Right first things first the rules of Wikipedia state that you should not remove sourced information without discussing it first. Secondly I have noticed that you have actually used a primary source, that is also against the rules. On Wikipedia you are only supposed to use secondary sources. I have left your information in on Sir Robert Munro, 3rd Baronet but have also included the information provided by historian Alexander Mackenzie. My apologies re discussion - still gettig used to this function. Having looked at numerous entries, pimary sources are common throughout. I take it this must mean unpublished primary sources? So for example one could use Monro's Expedition? which is readily available in the 1637 original - or should one cite Brockington's edition.

Re the primary reference, would publising a picture of the Muster-roll be a solution to the source? I mean puting a picture up on this page directly from the muster? The source is available online (at a cost to register alas) and free to copy, but the reference given and the others for the Monro/Munro regiments make fascinating reading - not least in composition of the regiment by family name and patronymic.

Hi, yes, you have to cite published sources and not the original manuscripts basically. For example in the actual Clan Munro article I have cited:"MacKay, "An Old Scots Brigade". Edinburgh 1885. Quoting: Monro, Robert. "Monro, His Expedition with the Worthy Scots Regiment". London 1637". Oh and one thing I must stress is you should not enter information that is not directly supported for the source. For example you may well be right that there were not 3 Munro Generals in the Thirty Year's War, but to say that it is a "complete fabrication" you would need a source that actually says it is a "complete fabrication".QuintusPetillius (talk)

Thanks - I've now been through the policy on primary documentation. I think you are right that the reference to Robert Munro from the muster-rolls might have to go. Despite being available for consultation on line you have to pay about £20 for an access pass. The stuff from Robert Monro's Expedition I think is less certain given that it is still in print and easily verifiable. But there are at least four scholars working on either the British in the Thirty Years' War or on the formation of the army of the Covenant that I know are active. I do not have access to all their works but I will order them into the library and see if by any chance one of them mentions Col Monro's regiment returning to Scotland and see if the major is mentionedTentsmuir (talk) 11:00, 30 December 2014 (UTC)Tentsmuir

Can you add image to John Ruthven (general)?

Any image of him drawn/etched in his lifetime would of course be far out of copyright and eligible for upload to WP:Wikimedia Commons. Even if it is in a copyrighted book/website, that publisher does not then exert any copyright over the image itself unless they have substantially modified it (like made a new piece of artwork based on the old image). So if there's an old image of him out there somewhere, that'd be a great addition to the article. MatthewVanitas (talk) 17:06, 17 January 2015 (UTC)

Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

March Madness 2017

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

• tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
• updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
• creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

WikiProject Women in Red/The World Contest

Hi. This month The Women in Red World Contest is being held to try to produce new articles for as many countries worldwide and occupations as possible. 2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
