Canadian National Railway

Hey! Nice work on Canadian National Railway...it's a long way from the stubby little article I originally wrote :) I just wanted to let you know that you might want to use "show preview" more often - it avoids having lots of little changes in the page history, and it's a good habit to get into in general. Not a big deal but I thought I'd pass it along. Anyway, again, good work! Adam Bishop 06:23, 24 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Move Function

Thank you for moving the article Strait of Belle Isle. However, in the future, please use the Move function to move articles, rather than copying and pasting the text. The Move function preserves the edit history, whereas the Copy function doesn't. I'm going to delete the Strait of Belle Isle article, then move the old article into its place. Thanks! - Montréalais 03:02, 15 May 2004 (UTC)

Passamaquoddy Bay

Hey, great work on Passamaquoddy Bay. Much better than what I had there (which was simply thrown together). Rhymeless 04:44, 5 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Hi! I deleted the image as you reqeusted. Adam Bishop 23:49, 27 Aug 2004 (UTC)

NB Highway 1/2

Excellent work on the pages for New Brunswick Highway 1 and New Brunswick Highway 2. I used to run a website with a lot of the same info on it (might put it back up someday...) Eventually I was going to put all my info up there... Kirjtc2 20:45, 7 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Article moving

Done - I think you could have done that one yourself though, it moved normally for me just by using the move function. If there is a redirect at that name already, it will still work, unless there is more page history there than the creation of the redirect itself (if that makes sense!). Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

Licensing

Done - is that all that's required though? I always assumed everything I contributed was public domain. Cheers,Plasma east 12:40, 11 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Coastal towns

I followed this definition to a tee:

"The following towns are on a sea coast; defined as towns that do not belong to Category:Coastal cities — in practice, with a population less than 100,000.

Large lakes such as the Great Lakes and the Caspian Sea also qualify."

I did not write the definition, I only followed it. I know Charlottetown is a city, but it has less than 100,000. I know Leamington is not on an ocean, but it is on a great lake. Besides, that area is called "Canada's south coast" anyways. Earl Andrew 04:54, 13 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Interesting. I guess coming from geography background and having experience in the marine industry I find including lakes in a definition of coast to be misleading. I had also heard the "south coast" term as well (in addition to "4th coast") but it seems to be stretching things a bit beyond what is supported in academic circles.Plasma east 05:08, 13 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for the work on the Canadian Pacific Railway article

Plasma, thanks for you contributions to the Canadian Pacific article, they add good new detail. However, you have also introduced two new red wikis. As you have noticed, user:JYolkowski has really worked up the article into nice shape, and it has been now been accepted as a feature article for the front page, to be put on the front page in a few weeks. One of the things I and JYoklkowski have been focusing on is elimination of all red wikis before we go front page...and since you seem to know this history, I am really hoping you will be open to the suggestion that you begin some articles (even if they are only stubs!) for the red wikis that have been introduced... What do you say? Fawcett5 01:31, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Plasma, thanks once again for your ongoing efforts with the CPR article, and now lately with The Canadian. I was wondering if there was something else you might help out with - the CPR article mentions a CPR predecessor called the Inter-Ocean Railway Company. Since you have emerged as the resident expert on obscure historical Canadian railways, it occurs to me that you might know something about it....although it may have existed only on paper? Cheers, Fawcett5 04:41, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Amtrak routes

Hi Plasma East, would you please take a peek at the controversy at Wikipedia:WikiProject Trains/Strategy, I would appreciate your feedback on this - I'll be willing to go with whatever consensus emerges there. Cheers Fawcett5 21:23, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)

New template

Hi, I just wanted to let you know about a handy new template I created.

expands to:

*Biography at the Canadian Dictionary of Biography Online

You can use it with subst: to avoid the small server hit associated with templates. Fawcett5 16:03, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Well thanks for clearing the info about enemy action up. Maybe I should put "was one of the only places in North America to see enemy action."

I'll change it right away...I read that "fact" in an online article about Bell Island...I should do better research. Bremen 22:42, 26 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Bay Ferries Great Lakes Limited

Greetings! Thanks for your major work on keeping things fresh with regards to Spirit of Ontario I and related articles. I'm curious as to what the source is for Bay Ferries Great Lakes Limited being the name of the subsidiary operating the service. I haven't seen a mention of it in any of the Rochester media I monitor, although that's not saying much.  :-) Just curious. Thanks! --Rtucker 16:25, 2005 May 7 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply over on my talk page. I plan on being aboard the first "general admission" voyage next month, so if it comes down to that, I'll make sure to read the fine print while standing in line. (I usually do anyway -- people avoid travelling with me because of my Warsaw Convention Trivia prowess -- but this time I'll take notes.) --Rtucker 13:03, 2005 May 8 (UTC)
Interesting. I'm not 100% sure that image is an actual recent image of the ship, however. Since the name announcement, they've had a different (I think) aerial photo of the vessel on that page *with* the new logotypes on it. Clearly, as the boat was firmly docked in Rochester until May 16 (and a couple days before, I did see her in person), it was an edited image.
Another bit of interest is the last modification date of the image... according to the web server, it's Thursday, May 19, which was about when ticket sales went live. So, something tells me the image is just a photoshop of a previous promotional image.
That said, it would be somewhat unlikely for them to put the wrong corporate name on the vessel, especially something as likely as Bay Ferries Great Lakes Limited, so I do think this is pretty good evidence that the name is as it is. I'm probably not going to be on the first voyage, due to schedule constraints, but I will take a picture of the back of the ticket the next time I'm aboard :-) Rtucker 23:21, 2005 May 26 (UTC)
Nabbed a picture this afternoon on the way home from Hamilton. Nice shiny new paint job, for sure! Rtucker 23:32, 2005 May 30 (UTC)

Miramichi River

Miramichi River and Southwest Miramichi River - why remove useful, perhaps helpful information? ie communities along the river and its origins on the low eroded remnants of the Appalachians? Polycarp

You certainly have industrial strength prose. You might have communicated with me before tearing apart an article which was a labour of love. I was a long time Miramichi resident descended from the first colonists, Scottish, French and Micmac. Polycarp

Image Markup

Hello, Plasma. I have been going through your Nova Scotia counties pages. Here's a tip: When placing an image like your maps, it is not necessary to create a DIV for the image. Just use a markup like this: . the effect is the same without the extra markup.

County V Incorporation

Hi. 1st, a concession. I had thought that CB County and Halifax County ceased to exist in any legally meaningful way after amalgamation. Clearly, they exist as census areas, as areas that the Province provides services in, etc. I was wrong to be editing that away. I was focusing on the end of the munciple government in those areas. However, the Counties themselves are incorporated as municiple units in 1879, so I think it is unclear and incorrect to say amalgamation included "the unincorporated areas of the County" because the county was incorporated. Please note, I really do appreciate your work on all these areas and I hope you contribute to the discussion/debate on the Talk:Halifax,_Nova_Scotia page about moving the whole of the Halifax artcile to the Halifax_Regional_Municipality article, and creating a history/community page for the old city of Halifax... this would bring the HRM/Halifax City/Halifax County article structue in line with the CBRM pages... while i am not the very best writer on wiki I a complete stickler for structure, logic and consistency and I would appreciate your thoughts on this subject...WayeMason 11:08, 18 August 2005 (UTC)

City of Halifax VERY ROUGH DRAFT

user:WayeMason/test

I am working up a new Halifax city page to place on the Halifax, Nova Scotia page, when I move the current Halifax page to the HRM page... help, edits, and ideas appreciated. thanks!!! Thanks for the props on HRM! Hey, this guy in West Yorkshire and I had a little revert war a day ago, he made Halifax, WY the main page on Halifax. I tried dialog (its on his talk page) and we went back and forth. I think he realised that if he did it one more time, and I reverted, that we would be at the 3R limit and back to square one... so he put in the disamb page. I think that Halifax NS should be the primary Halifax page, as do others who have posted on the Halifax, West Yorkshire page... what is the process here, o' exhalted admin? is there a resolution for this other than WayeMason 00:30, 23 August 2005 (UTC)

Use of as of 2004, etc.

Hi. I've reverted your removal of this phrase from a couple of articles. Where a fact is subject to change over a period of time, this link is used to indicate the last time that the fact was checked. If you are able to confirm that the bridge toll (in these cases) is still correct at the moment, then the correct thing to do is to change the 'as of' date to the current year. Hope that helps. Good rewrite of the CCGC William Alexander article

When I added the news of her mission to New Orleans I was daunted by the idea of giving the article the full rewrite it needed. You did a great job -- better than I think I could have done. Congratulations. -- Geo Swan 01:56, 9 September 2005 (UTC)

PEI is the only province yet to ratify the National Building Code of Canada

Hi -- I saw that you recently added this fact to the Prince Edward Island article. Would it be possible to rephrase it to make it a bit clearer? As it is now, I'm not sure if:

 • PEI is the only province to ratify the National Building Code of Canada yet, or
 • PEI is the only province which has yet to ratify the National Building Code of Canada.

Thanks! Pburka 03:56, 17 September 2005 (UTC)

HRM maps

Dear Mr East. How are ye? Please review the Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and Halifax, Nova Scotia pages... I have added, gasp, more maps, something you have much experience in! I have not been able to get the Halifax County map AND the HRM detail map to BOTH appear in the sidebar of the HRM page, though I know it can be done. I also just would appreciate another set of eyes reviewing these maps for accuracy, as far as it can be accurate where I "freehanded" the damn community boarders in!!! I think this will go a long way to visually demonstrating the arguement for HRM and Halifax being seperate.... cheers WayeMason 13:10, 30 September 2005 (UTC)

Maritime Cities/Towns

Hey, just wanted to thank you for your additions to the Cities/Towns section of the Maritimes its a lot better from where I first started and its good to know that some that's skilled in geography has cleared up the section a little bit.

Thanks again, Theyab_07

 • I just wanted to say I really enjoyed your edits on Fairview, Nova Scotia - living in Fairview most of my life I have been meaning to get around to giving the Wiki entry justice, but you've done a fine job and makes a great start for others, like myself, to make it worthy of a Featured Article some day! Thanks a bunch

HRM stuff

Sidebar for all HRM communities/neighbourhoods

Ideas include having HRM at the top as the main link - yeah... one of the nicest sidebars I have seen is for Muslim. Its so clean.... maybe "Part of a Series on Halifax Regional Municipality" with the HRM Logo under it, and then the logo the community name.

with an inset map showing community location - I am willing and able to make maps for whatever communities we do this for. I suggest that we do articles for the old neighbourhoods of Halifax/Dartmouth and articles for the community areas that are on the map I have created. The areas on the map are the plannign areas that HRM staff use...

lat/long - hard to do, I think, where is the center of some/many of these communities?

population info - also hard, the census does not show the old towns anymore

neighbouring/adjoining communities - yeppers, but what if we just put all the 17 planning areas, like in the muslim sidebar...

neighbourhoods - and with this one, the neighbourhoods IN the community planning area.

But yeah, I am in. Maybe we should do an HRM/NS "article of the week club" and try and get more people....

WayeMason 03:45, 7 November 2005 (UTC)

Slow but steady wins the race... don't want to burn out on wiki... I am self employeed/work at home so I can easily spend all day doing this, to my own financial deteriment! My wife thinks I am nut already abotu the time spent. I got the planning areas from the HRM website planning subsection then free-hand traced them by placing the HRM graphic on a layer under my map in photoshop then making my top layer 50% opaque. Long, and boring... I am not in love with all the divisions, but if they have stablised then that is how the city will develop... nothing says we cannot do neighbourhood maps inside the divisions. It will be fun to try and do a map showing the different versions of the "North End". Should we do a dummy template first on one of our user pages subpages? As for the HRM article, its way way too long. I agree, we should cut it down and create sub articles.... every time I see and edit I cringe. But you know, we do good work, the Nova Scotia, Halifax and HRM pages are all almost where they need to be.... I would like to be able to submit them for peer edit by Xmas, maybe? CheersWayeMason 14:45, 7 November 2005 (UTC)
But you know, hanging out watch tv, bored... User:WayeMason/test you have my permission to edit the sidebar and create the template. I had a copy of the hrm logo on my computer from somehting else.... WayeMason 02:26, 8 November 2005 (UTC)

Lot XX

Is there a reason you're mass-creating one-line stubs about unnamed townships in PEI? Right now, these are candidates for speedy deletion per CSD A1, but I wanted to find out what was going on before I started deleting them.

That said, you need more than "X is a township in Y" to make even a stub. I'm not asking for much, but stubs need to give enough information to actually expand the stub into an article. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 04:19, 21 November 2005 (UTC)

Can you please explain what you're doing? I notice you've continued after this note, and these are all speedy deletion candidates. Please explain, or I will have to start deleting. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 04:29, 21 November 2005 (UTC)
These are townships which are the formal census subdivisions for Prince Edward Island as per List of Prince Edward Island lots, created in the colonial survey of 1764 by Samuel Holland. I'm currently creating maps for them and they will be used when referring to rural communities in the province. Give it a few days and you'll see what transpires. Plasma east 04:43, 21 November 2005 (UTC)
Well, okay then, that makes sense. I figured something was going on, but I couldn't figure out what (especially since the only article linking to them seemed to indicate that they were arbitrary divisions of land.)
Wouldn't it just be more useful to make a list of lots and then link to the municipalities contained therein, rather than an article each for each lot? I understand that the lots have a history collectively, but do they have individual history, save as arbitrary divisions that happen to contain municipalities? - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 04:50, 21 November 2005 (UTC)
Most of them do have individual histories as they predate the names of most of the non-incorporated rural communities. This entire scheme was part of a feudal land system - one of the longest-lasting ones in the New World, and one of the last remnants of this form of cadastral survey in British North America. Each lot was given in a lottery to members of the British nobility, who would then obligated to bring settlers at the landlord's expense, then they would recoup the costs and make a profit by charging a "quit rent"...
This scheme was intended to avoid draining the British treasury by having the private sector fund settlement (ala Virginia, Carolinas, Massachusetts Bay, etc.), as well as rewarding friends of those in power. The landlords were mostly based in Britain and had ruthless land agents who enforced the rents and these guys were pocketing much of the money, creating tensions... it all ended up in settler revolts throughout the 1700s and 1800s. There's a big religious element too, since most of the owners were British Anglican, and the setlers were poor - either Scottish or Irish Protestant/Catholic and it created major social divisions in the colony. It only ended with Confederation when the federal government agreed to the PEI terms of union and provided money to buy out the last of the absentee landlords - the last absentee landlord wasn't bought out until the mid-20th century. Check out http://www.islandregister.com/lotmap.html for an idea of how the subdivision occurred - I'll be putting a brief history of each lot and who the absentee owner was. This is the reason why 98%+ of PEI's landmass is privately owned, with very little Crown influence in the provincial parcel fabric.Plasma east 14:00, 21 November 2005 (UTC)

Would you like to join the Nova Scotia Wikipedia project I am about to start with PlasmaEast? Image copyright problem with Image:Chtn_city_hall.PNG

Thanks for uploading Image:Chtn_city_hall.PNG. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: TemplateName.

That's fine - the Charlottetown images were uploaded well before many of these copyright policies were established so I had assumed they fell under the basic public domain or fair use licenses. Times have changed.Plasma east 19:15, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

DFO images

You have probably noticed that the decision was made recently to start removing all images that were under non-commercial liscenses -- they aren't considered "free" enough. Most of the Canadian Coast Guard images were from a Department of Fisheries and Oceans web-page, and fell under their liscense. It is not considered a free liscense. It is not PD.

Yesterday I went searching for images of CCG vessels that had been taken by US Government personnel. Those images would be PD.

I saw a nice image on the Bedford Institute of Oceanography article. The images liscence asserted that it was PD. But, when I checked the liscense, it is under the same conditions as other DFO images, namely:

 1. Users exercise due diligence in ensuring the accuracy of the materials reproduced;
 2. Natural Resources Canada be identified as the source department; and,
 3. The reproduction is not represented as an official version of the materials reproduced, nor as having been made, in affiliation with or with the endorsement of Natural Resources Canada.

The wikipedia leadership have arranged a distribution deal, where the wikipedia will be distributed with a linux distribution. And, for this reason, they want only images that people can re-use for any purpose, including commercial uses.

It is a big drag. I don't know why, when the encyclopedia is copied for the linux distribution, it can't just leave the non-free images behind.

Anyhow, I thought I would give you a heads-up, because the record shows you uploaded the Bedford Institute photo. Do you have any ideas about what we should do about our reliance on DFO images? Do you think we could convince the DFO to drop the conditions on their images? -- Geo Swan 15:26, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

Image Tagging Image:Acadmap.gif

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Acadmap.gif. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stan 16:39, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

I think it would be more appropriate if you changed the pronoun "she" in the article to "it" so it does not relate a female to an inanimate object. --Porqin 13:06, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

I'm not aware of any particular Wikipedia policy regarding vessel names as using female references to vessels in Anglo-Saxon countries is still very much the norm. Russia and the former USSR used male references as well, I believe. I note that Lloyd's of London created a similar controversy regarding pronouns several years ago when they decided to begin using "it", only to reverse the policy shortly afterwards: See Gender-specific_pronoun#Ships_and_countries. I'm not sure what to do but the edits look sketchy to me. A company can certainly not replace an article with their own advertising, so you can safely tell them to eat it, if that's what they're doing. Adam Bishop 23:38, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

Harper

The Government of PEI varies in its description of Harper Road/Harper as per signage in the immediate area as well as the 2000 Civic address reform. "Harper Road" is generally intented to include Harper and Leoville, whilst "Harper" includes only certain civic addresses within Harper Road - Hwy 158. The article describes the Harper Road as a whole, not just Harper. The community of Leoville is included in the article. Locally, the area is known as "Harper Road", and the term "Harper" is non-existent in local terms.— OLP 1999 12:25, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

 • I will make revisions to the article that should please the both of us. It is easily a confusing subject in terms to whether "Harper" is a recently developed term over "Harper Road" and what should be specified where in the article. I, as a citizen of Leoville, am fully aware of the confusing dilemma. I also believe that redirects from "Leoville" and "Harper" to "Harper Road" will take care of any confusion from people searching for the aforementioned communities at Wikipedia.— OLP 1999 12:47, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

Hello. I found this article about the A&K written mainly by you. I wrote a question on the talk page. Please could you check these dates? I wrote the article on de.wp and have found quite different dates... Please always give sources for what you write. That will help others to comprehend the article's content. Greetings, --Thogo (Talk) 10:21, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

I'll try to find where I read that information - I think it came from a book on New England railways in my collection but I'm not 100% sure. I now reference most facts for my contributions to articles but I was pretty lazy about this early on in my Wikipedia editing... Cheers. Plasma east 11:06, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

AfD Nomination: CSTC Greenwood

An editor has nominated the article CSTC Greenwood for deletion, under the Articles for deletion process. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the nomination (also see What Wikipedia is not and Deletion policy). Your opinions on why the topic of the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome: participate in the discussion by editing Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/CSTC Greenwood. Add four tildes like this ~~~~ to sign your comments. You can also edit the article CSTC Greenwood during the discussion, but do not remove the "Articles for Deletion" template (the box at the top of the article), this will not end the deletion debate. Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. Jayden54Bot 20:38, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

 • Hi. Thanks for your comments in the nomination for deletion, they brought to mind the idea of a re-merge. I just have a question. Why do you not think that the activities of the Canadian Forces in the training of cadets shouldn't be included along with the other military activities that happen on the bases? I think that would be a better place for the information. The Canadian Forces bases are notable in their own right, but I don't think the cadet summer training centre units are, only as sub-units of the larger national cadet organization, or as they make up part of the activities at a Canadian Forces base. You can reach me on my talk page. See you around. Sancho McCann 19:16, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
 • Okay, agreed the CSTC Albert Head article certainly is a bit much for inclusion the CFB Esquimalt page :) But now I notice that a majority of the CTSC Albert Head article violates the wikipedia policy on no original research. I've noticed this on several other cadet sub-unit pages (gliding centres, squadrons, etc.) When trimmed of the original research (stuff that only could be known by staff at these centres and not verifiable by any third party), the articles become very small, maybe small enough to include back in their parent articles that they were once split from. What do you think? Sancho McCann 03:50, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

Coor Template in article Cape Bauld

Hi; I have noticed that you changed the coordinates back in the body of the text. My reason for placing it in the title was to apply a standard format and to also utilize the coordination from Wikipedia to Google Earth. Are there any over-riding reasons why you wish to have the coordinates located in the body of the text? Thanks, --HJKeats 16:41, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

I didn't realize this was a new convention - I was simply copying the format for several caps and headlands articles from another article so I'll attempt to revert them to the bottom. Plasma east 17:36, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for responding to my inquiry. Most of the articles that I have come across lately have had the coord's appear at the top of the article. Those that I have checked into had a specific format to them and when you follow that format Google Earth picks it up and places a locator ICON at the location (within the application Google Earth). Take for example the article on Tors Cove it shows up in Google Earth whereas a place like Bonavista doesn't have a Wikipedia location ICON in Google Earth. The difference is the way that the coord reference is written. If you examine the articles you will notice the difference. Not sure if that has any bearing on the coor appearing in the title or in the text of the article. Are familiar with Google Earth? --HJKeats 17:52, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
The nub of the problem I have is... the change you make in Wikipedia is not immediate. I have asked Google Earth people how often they do a refresh such that it captures all of the latest information. I'm still waiting on that answer.... --HJKeats 18:01, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

Mountain disambig.

Thanks, Plasma, for including Canadian peaks in the various mountain disambig pages. You changed the formatting (for the better, I think). Did you use a script or bot? I noticed that some of the redlinks are now repeated: i.e., there are some peaks that are duplicate within the same county in the U.S. ... is this fixable?

Thanks again! hike395 04:16, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

thank you lord...

Where have you been?  :) The Halifax thing is SO DEPRESSING. It is a real problem, because I finally have some time and energy, so I was about to roll out a proper HRM infobox template and create, rename and merge articles to match all the communities on our gosh darn map,so I actually wanted to create a Halifax Mainland article, too... I am afraid to change anything! Anyway, there is no talking with the guy, he has no idea what HRM is actually like and has no interest in the facts as people are living them. The thing that is most frustrating is that both the HRM and Halifax pages say that they are the capital of Nova Scotia! error! does not compute! The only thing I can think is either we vote it and win, or we just box him out by having 3-4 people change the word city to community and stop him when he hits the 3RR. WayeMason 19:23, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your kind words and commiseration. It is extremely disappointing that someone with an axe to grind and acting with no good faith can just make the stupid encyclopedia be factually wrong. So much for consensus = truth and all that. It is galling that the article is just plain wrong, and frustrating that this one guy has changed articles over and over again to undo this "HRM bias" that only he sees. If there was an actual editorial authority on wikipedia they could review this and see the guy is a know nothing wanker but there isn't, and I have a life, so I am going to ignore this, and wait until someone else goes after the article for being factually incorrect.
I caught myself wishing they had called the RM Chebucto RM as they had discussed at one point, to make it clearer! But seriously, we made an error being so nice about it, we should have made Halifax, NS go to HRM as a redirect and killed the Halifax article off, created the area articles. By being nice and fair, we allowed a confusing situation to persist, even though it was clear from the start the naming structure of the articles was going to foment confusion and error.
My plan is to just make the HRM and subordinate articles as well written as I can, and write an article about the Halifax Urban area, and then when in 6-12 months the Halifax, NS article is proposed to merge with the HRM article support that whole heartedly. You can see last night someone put the HRM population on the Halifax page last night. I give it 3 months before most of the media, sports and economic stuff from the HRM page exist on both pages...
As an aside, I combed the CanLii website archives of the NS statues for both what is the capital, interestingly there is NO reference at all to the establishment or recognition of an official capital of Nova Scotia. Ha.
You can see how the I am working on this: Template:Infobox_HRM_Planning_Area and your help would be appreciated... —The preceding unsigned comment was added by WayeMason (talkcontribs) 13:27, 6 April 2007 (UTC).

Help with RFC

Hello there, sorry for the form-letter post.... I am writing you because your edits of Halifax, Nova Scotia, like a half dozen others, since January, have been reverted by one user, Lonewolf BC.

I have recently lodged a Request for Comments on the Talk:Halifax, Nova Scotia page. I and several other editors have had a running dispute with user Lonewolf BC. The RFC is This is a dispute about whether it is accurate to continue to refer to the area of or approximately coinciding with the boundaries of the City of Halifax, which became a part of the rural/urban Halifax Regional Municipality in 1996, as a city.

Basically, as I say on the RFC, we all agree that this is no longer a City, but to use former City's boundaries when describing the current urban area as a "city" (note the lower case) is at best arbitrary and at worst a fabrication. The city is now a continuous area that wraps the harbour, from Portuguese Cove (outside of the city of Halifax to the west and south) to Cole Harbour (outside of the former City of Dartmouth to the east). People now refer to the entire urban area of Halifax Regional Municipality as 'the city' and 'Halifax'.

Anyway, the bottom line is at least five people have tried to change the wording of the intro since January, and every time this one user changes it back. I have tried to come up with compromise wording, and he won't dialog. Right now wikipedia says HRM and Halifax are the capital of Nova Scotia. This article is now factually incorrect, in my opinion, and I need your help, please chime in. WayeMason 23:13, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

PS Plasma East I couldn;'t let it go, I have started this RFC and have contacted everyone he has argued with for the last 6 months, adn all of the NS Wikiproject... nerd = me

The more time i have spent on the HRM stuff, well, what I think now is, If you poke around what I have done with HRM, History of Halifax and Halifax Peninsula I think we could safely delete the {{Halifax, Nova Scotia]] article and incorporate it all in the HRM article and forward it to HRM, but GOOD LUCK convincing mr Lonewolf of that. :) WayeMason 18:23, 23 April 2007 (UTC)

Please don't add Category:Towns in Ontario to any community that isn't legally designated as a town by Ontario's Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, as you did at Grand Bend, Port Severn, Port Elgin, Port Stanley and Corunna. None of those are towns; they're all communities within towns or townships. Thanks. Bearcat 04:05, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Maritime Christian College, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. To do this, affix the template hangon to the page and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Geographic naming conventions

Re: your recent discussion with Neelix about place names in NL, our convention is spelled out at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (settlements). The only thing is, however, that we can't move an article to the plain title just because we want to; a discussion has to take place on the talk page first. Bearcat 21:22, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing this out. I didn't have a chance to make any further investigation for Neelix but I figured such a policy did exist. Plasma east 13:29, 8 May 2007 (UTC)
Unfortunately about the only way to fix the problem is for someone (or several someones) to manually move everything back to the original title. Administrators don't even have any special way around that; the only special power we have when it comes to page moves is that we can do a move that requires another page to be deleted in the process. I'll do some, but I'm probably not going to get to them all; I'd suggest looking at the category when you get a chance and moving some back to the original title. If you come across any that won't let you make the move, alert me and I'll look after those. Bearcat 23:14, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

Minor edits

Please remember to mark your edits as minor when (and only when) they genuinely are minor edits (see Wikipedia:Minor edit). Marking a major change as a minor one (and vice versa) is considered poor etiquette.
