Categories in article drafts

Hi George, I came across User:George8211/Open projects/Space 3 while browsing Category:Compositions by Robert Schumann and discovering that your user subpage was in that category. I have commented out all the categories from all the drafts in your userspace, because categories intended for main namespace articles should not be used on userspace pages. Happy editing! Graham87 06:50, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

Thanks. I'll remember to remove draft articles from categories in future. I was just wondering, why did you review my map of subpages? George8211 (talk | mail) 17:22, 16 July 2013 (UTC)
Because I wanted to find out if there were any more examples like the Schumann one. Re: the GNG tag, that's part of the {{Authority control}} template, which you pasted into your userspace draft. Graham87 03:13, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi George8211, I have had a bit of a look around for reliable sources on this subject. It seems she is a TV anchor, actress, musician and yoga instructor. There is one bio in the external links section that I will cite later. Nothing to set the world on fire but I think it's worth giving this one time and see what appears in terms of better sources. Best wishes Flat Out let's discuss it 16:47, 20 July 2013 (UTC)

Foreign languages in file talk pages

Hi George, in future if you see pages like this you can tag them with {{db-g6}} to get them deleted under criterion for speedy deletion (CSD G6) G6. I've deleted the first two under that criterion and the other two were tagged under CSD G11 by another user and deleted by an admin. An alternative solution is to replace the page with {{talkheader}} like this, but I personally dislike that template so I wouldn't use that solution. Graham87 00:53, 2 September 2013 (UTC)

This was not a helpful edit: if you look at it you will see you just restored some serious unverified claims and likely BLP violations. Thank you. Drmies (talk) 17:27, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

Usernames for administrator attention

Hi, just here to pass along some advice when submitting usernames to WP:UAA. Unless a username is obviously offensive (racist, homophobic, etc.), the admins usually won't take action unless the user has made at least one edit. I used to report all kinds of users whose names sounded like WP:CORPNAMEs, some of whom I even found with web sites to confirm the fact. However, the admins won't move to block the user unless they've made edits that are promotional. A couple of alternatives you could try on those zero-edit accounts are {{uw-username}} or {{uw-coi-username}} - that might nip them in the bud. Good luck! --Drm310 (talk) 19:35, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

@Drm310: thanks for the advice! George8211what did I break now? 19:40, 27 November 2013 (UTC)
Just wanted to endorse Drm's advice. I declined several of your UAA reports for the very reason that the accounts in question have made no edits. In most cases that's going to be the outcome. If the name is obviously defamatory toward an individual or otherwise blatantly problematic, that's a different story. Thanks for understanding. – Juliancolton | Talk 21:53, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

Thank you very much for introducing myself, and no doubt many other newly minted wikipedians into wikipedia. You have been very welcoming, and you have shown how thoughtful you are in welcoming new users by providing them with links to useful topics. Peterpacz1 (talk) 19:30, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for trying to warn this user. I put a 4im warning for personal attacks on other editors, but removed it because they were already blocked for it. Not sure if it should stay there for history, but the 'last warning' i put was pointless because they were blocked. Not sure if yours should stay I'll leave it to you. NDKilla 20:56, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

@NDKilla: thanks for that. I'd just been checking through my watchlist and found the attack. I think I'll remove it - no point in duplicate warnings. George8211what did I break now? 21:03, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Virginia Organizing page

Hi,

I'm editing the Virginia Organizing page to have it more up-to-date and useful for Wikipedia users. Virginia Organizing has given me permission to use text from their site, so there is no copyright issue. Thanks for what you do--

- Nicholas — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wiki user 843 (talkcontribs) 20:24, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

@Wiki user 843: sorry! I've just realised that the page isn't actually copyrighted. I'm sorry if I seemed a bit harsh on you, but on Wikipedia we normally write stuff ourself, rather then copying stuff from other websites. However, don't feel put off: I can clearly see that you wanted to expand the article with good faith. George8211what did I break now? 20:26, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
12/11/13: I'm using information from www.virginia-organizing.org because it is not copyrighted and provides the only detailed information concerning the history of the organization. I hope to go through the page in the near future to paraphrase more but wanted to get the details on the page ASAP. I think I've done a decent job so far but need a little more time. -Nicholas — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wiki user 843 (talkcontribs) 00:04, 12 December 2013 (UTC)

Respond to why you posted 8 months late. Is it because you crave power? You're a joke. And yes this conversation is being documented for our viewing pleasure. DOCTOREdna — Preceding unsigned comment added by DrEdna (talkcontribs) 05:05, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
@DrEdna: the reason why I placed the warning so late is merely that I forgot to check the timestamps of the comments. I do not "crave power"—Wikipedia is about building an encyclopedia, adminship is for those who do more housekeeping (still a vital part, though). Also, please keep cool while posting comments, assume good faith and do not use improper sarcasm. May I also ask what you mean by "this conversation is being documented for our viewing pleasure"? RE: Fix

Hi!

You seem to have reverted Wikipedia back to the version before you accidental deleted most of it. So you are doing fine on that point. Don't worry you haven't messed it up!

Can I recommend you go into preferences and under 'Editing' tick the box next to 'Enable section editing via [edit] links'. This will mean you can edit each section (IE the text under each individual heading) separately and not the whole page as a massive block of text.

This will help if you want to try adding the {{clarify}} template again.

Hi George8211,

First of all, thnaks for your message. I am not an administrator in wikipedia, so I really shouldn't be the one you are seeking advice from. I recommend you to seek advice from an administrator, or request for comment here and chances are, you will receive better advice for issues related to editing. Nevertheless, I checked the edits made by the IP 210.89.60.250 on the Ravi Teja article, and per WP:EL, I believe that external links should not be added to the body of the article. Therefore, I will revert the edits made by him and warn him not to add external links to the body of an article. Hope this advice helps :) --Dps04 (talk) 18:07, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Updating a page

Hi George,

I got your message about undoing the changes I made on a page. I was wondering how I go about getting his Career section updated with his current long bio from his website, as that is the one he wants on your page. Any help you could give me would be appreciated. Thank you! [1]

SarahSimpsonWeiss (talk)

Hi Sarah, there are a couple of things you need to do before you edit the Gregg Hurwitz article.
  • We can't use the exact content of his website, as it's copyrighted and promotional. On Wikipedia we have to keep articles neutral. However, there is a way you can get round the copyrighting problem.
  • You need to say somewhere that you have a conflict of interest (you're associated with the subject of the article). I'd suggest doing this on your user page, your talk page, and/or the the article talk page. But thank you for putting it in the edit summary of one of your edits.
But please don't be put off from editing – as long as you keep to the rules, no-one'll mind. (If you want to stay safe, propose changes on the talk page, and that's generally what's recommended.) —George8211 / T 18:01, 21 January 2015 (UTC)

Whats up George8211? — Preceding unsigned comment added by ITNIMPRESS (talkcontribs) 13:43, 24 January 2015 (UTC)

@ITNIMPRESS: phrases such as innovative production regimes are promotional, and also your username implies an association with ITN IMPRESS. —George8211 / T 15:53, 24 January 2015 (UTC)

Confused

I am not intentionally making disruptive edits. I was updating the information per your request of not having soapbox content on the page - I didn't realize I had to make 100% corrections the first time and couldn't update again. I also need a little more guidance as to what language you are referring to as I feel the information listed is fair and balanced - it is what FORA.tv is. Thank you! Emg3091 (talk) 19:39, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Also just realized I forgot a period at the end of one of my sentences. Am I allowed to add it or will that contribute to the disruptive editing? Thanks. Emg3091 (talk) 19:41, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

@Emg3091: it's phrases like The company works with each of its clients individually to create a customized video strategy plan to help them increase revenue through sponsorships, pay-per-view and advertising. With offices in San Francisco and New York, the company serves customers both nationally and internationally which aren't neutral and can't be used in articles. However, I understand if the information is outdated, and you're welcome to update stuff if need be.
As for correcting punctuation, go ahead and do it. There's nothing wrong with little stuff like that. —George8211 / T 19:45, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the clarification, George8211! I'm new to the Wiki editing world and am not trying to provide incorrect information. Can you please let me know if the below update is approved? I appreciate it!
"The company's goal is to increase revenue for their partners through sponsorships, pay-per-view and advertising. FORA.tv has office in San Francisco and New York, making their services accessible to customers both nationally and internationally." — Preceding unsigned comment added by Emg3091 (talkcontribs) 19:52, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
*offices :) Emg3091 (talk) 19:56, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
@Emg3091: I'd suggest something like FORA.tv's revenue methods for their partners include sponsorships, pay-per-view and advertising and FORA.tv has offices in San Francisco and New York (I'd leave off the "making their services accessible..." bit). But you might need to change it slightly depending on where in the article you put it, to make it flow better. —George8211 / T 19:59, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

DDOE

Hi George, You removed my post on DDOE. I helped create that organization a few years ago (which is irrelevant to this message, just a tidbit of trivia about our statehood effort here in DC), and was simply removing what you might consider, based on your removal of my post, a "less than neutral" discription of the former Director (who left a few months ago), with the similar "less than neutral" disrctiption of the New Director who was appointed last month. I thought it was better to have the current director's information - and I didn't see it as one sided, it is simply the public discription of the new Director, as was the description posted for the previous director. Best Wishes, Bill

@Bill Zybach: ah, sorry about that. I suppose that up-to-date promo is better than out-of-date promo. :) —George8211 / T 13:18, 2 February 2015 (UTC)

Bat shit crazy guys

There is an alternative to an SPI.

Sometimes I simply post at all three of their talk pages with the same message. That message includes pointing out that all three accounts are related and asks them to cut out the nonsense. Mentioning all three accounts in a list helps others know what is happening if it goes further.

Anyway, it could very well be 3 friends at an Internet cafe. Usually they get bored and never edit again. I watch their contribs and maybe search a few keywords. If things go further, then I seek blocks. Whether they are all the same person or 3 friends horsing around doesn't make much difference. Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 15:56, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

Oh, and in this case, an SPI may not be such a bad idea because one is now blocked. If the others continue to edit and they are the blocked editor, they would not be permitted to do so. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 16:00, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

@Anna Frodesiak: thanks for that. I wouldn't think they could be bothered to do anything more now. I'm not used to being accused of being too soft on self-promoting companies and organisations! The page contained only the name of the organisation, which appears to be a club rather than a commercial entity, and a couple of social media links. There was no text actually promoting the organisation. My feeling was that this was a club which had misunderstood our purpose rather than a deliberate attempt to spam, so I soft blocked. It's likely that this is the last we see of it, but if the article returns with a new user name, it can be hard blocked for spamming. If you still feel that I've been too lenient, let me know. Did a google and he does indeed appear to be a journalist and author, however linking to a page selling his book isn't the best source. Whether he is notable or not enough to warrant inclusion on the Rainhill page (or even if it's accurate, was he born in Rainhill, live there or?) I'll let someone else gauge. Hello George will Sam answer? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bossdude777 (talkcontribs) 16:05, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

@Bossdude777: it looks like Sam's put it in this section of your talk page.
Also, some things to keep in mind:
  • On talk pages, click "New section" in the top bar to start a new discussion.
  • Put four tildes at the end of message on talk pages. So it would look something like this:
Hello, this is an example message. ~~~~
  • When replying to posts, thread it using indents -- one colon ( : ) creates the smallest indent, two colons ( :: ) a bigger indent, and so on. It's basically the number of indents the message you're replying to uses, plus one.
All this is confusing, but you get used to it. Eventually. And it's good to show that you know talk page etiquette. —George8211 / T 20:57, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi,

Sorry, I just got your message. I am Bernard Cathelin's nephew. The website is managed by my family.

How should I proceed to have Bernard Cathelin's biography displayed in Wikipedia ?

Ninja Division Publishing

I am working to create a Ninja Division page, I am not terribly familiar with editing in html and will have other contributors assist with this. This page is an information page regarding Ninja Division Publishing, which is a tabletop games publisher similar to Wizards of the Coast who publish Dungeons & Dragons. I could not find a Wikipedia page for the company so I am adding one. I could not figure out how to create a page under my username so I created a new one. If you can switch it to my username that would be great! BellaKunoichi is my username.

@Ninja Division Publishing: to create a page, the normal process is called Articles for Creation. However, it can take weeks to get an article through, so what you can do is start writing your article at Draft:Ninja Division Publishing, and I'll help you with it. In the morning (I live in the UK) I'll also sort out the confusion with your two accounts. Oh, and welcome to Wikipedia! —George8211 / T 23:54, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Thank you George! I have created the page as a draft and will continue working on it tomorrow. - Bella — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ninja Division Publishing (talkcontribs) 23:59, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi George

I'm sorry for my emotions, but that user "Gene93k" was on purpose attacking article ,which other user(Kombinator the Great) wrote about author of Dynamic Atlas of World History Sergei Allahverdov(Allahverdi-Amatuni). It was very personal, how he and user "Randykitty" delete the article. They said it was because "Kombinator the Great" violate some rules, but instead to penalty him for violation, they delete article he wrote about an other person. Can you put them on they place and prevent them from they divious actions. Thank you.Justice will win on you (talk) 00:46, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

@Justice will win on you: I won't say anything more about your attack. However, Gene93k was following a guideline we have on Wikipedia -- that biographies of people who are alive (or other stuff about living people) have to have references, otherwise they'll be deleted. This is because in the past we had an incident where someone created a fake article about a journalist saying he was a suspect in an assassination. So, new articles about living people which don't have references can be deleted after seven days if no references are added to them. You may work on it in your sandbox however.
I don't see how Gene93k was attacking the article, or attacking it personally. Can you clarify this? —George8211 / T 16:07, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
Thank you very much for explanation George, but in article I was concern, nothig like criminal or suspitious was mention about author. But anyway how I can get references for that article? We have no idea who they are, what kind of references this is? We do have brilliant recommendations from leading US history scientists for authors work, but it is all on papers.I'm very confused.Help me to understand please.Justice will win on you (talk) 18:55, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
@Justice will win on you: it's okay to reference paper stuff. It doesn't really matter the exact style you reference, as long as there are reliable references. —George8211 / T 19:10, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
So,my friend, it means I can scan those recommendations and send them to you? And if that's wright for you guys ,can you help to return the article on wikipedia?
I'll honestly explain you all the situation, we (me and my young college "Kombinator") thought we know who that "Gne93k" is ,and him and that "Randykitty" is on purpose sabotaging the article about S.Allahverdov (Allahverdi-Amatuni). I hope we are wrong.
And here why we ,the historians, think why the article is important for encyclopedia, because S.Allahverdov's work is a very important innovation in a historical maps making, because dynamic atlases of world history have an ability to cover detaily all of the important events and changes in human history without the gaps. And it is also strip all the falsifikators of history science from ability to use they tricks to turn historical events the way they want in the favor of political agendas they represent.Justice will win on you (talk) 05:43, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
@Justice will win on you: Sorry for replying so late. You don't need to scan them, just reference the name/author of the books/papers. If you have any more questions please ask at the teahouse as I will be away for at least tomorrow. —George8211 / T 20:18, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

However, I digress: if dear Mrs Lightbreather and her fellow suffragettes need a challenge, they should address why I must divert Peeress of the Realm to Peer of the Realm? Put a picture in my article — Preceding unsigned comment added by Domforever (talkcontribs) 20:17, 5 August 2015 (UTC)
@Domforever: this is how you do it: [[File:Butterfly vindula arsinoe.jpg|thumb|alt=A butterfly resting on a leaf.|The [[butterfly]] ''vindula arsinoe'' sits on a leaf.]]. Explanation:
  • File:Butterfly vindula arsinoe.jpg is a link to where the image is that you want to insert. It looks something like: File:abc.png or File:foo.jpg.
  • thumb specifies how you want it to look. Thumb is normal.
  • alt=text is the alternative text used to describe the image when you can't see it. Like for people who use screen readers.
  • The [[butterfly]] ''vindula arsinoe'' sits on a leaf is the caption, or description.
And this is how it looks:
A butterfly resting on a leaf.
The butterfly vindula arsinoe sits on a leaf.

Changing name on Avast page

Hi George, Thanks for your note earlier today. I understand what you're saying and the edits you made. Another editor had remarked that "The page severely lacks evidences of awards and milestones which needs attention of Wikipedians." so I was attempting to satisfy her need for more explanation.

My bigger issue is the name. We are attempting to change the "Avast" name to match with the style guide here, http://files.avast.com/files/marketing/materials/product-icons-pdf/how-to-write-avast.pdf. Earlier this year, we made a branding change and stopped referring to ourselves or any of our products as "avast!". One of the reasons is that our customers were getting confused and thought the ! was an i, therefore calling us "avasti". The other reason was just to simplify the name, and a third reason is so that Google crawlers would "see" one name and properly create the Knowledge Graph card for our company on Google search results. You see, Wikipedia is one of the sources they draw from, so it's important to be accurate.

In May, we successfully got the Wikipedia page name changed from avast! to Avast, but then someone changed it to Avast Software. According to our new style guide, we should be referred to as Avast, when referring to the products or company, or AVAST Software s.r.o., when referring to the legal entity. I would really like to get it changed back to "Avast" but I can foresee a back and forth and I would like to avoid an argument. What do you suggest? Is it enough for me to change it and cite this style guide as the reference? Or do I need, as Maggie suggested, our lawyers to send in the Wikipedia:Declaration of consent for all enquiries. AS someone with more authority, can you do it and make the change stick?

I appreciate any advice you can offer. Thank you. Debsalmi (talk) 22:20, 7 August 2015 (UTC)

It was shown on video and the whole world knows that Royce kneed Ken in the groin. But for whatever reason, when I open the page to edit, it states NOT TO PUT IN KNEE TO THE GROIN. That shot to the groin was what opened the opportunity for Gracie to attack and win. It's a legitimate note of the fight. I'm trying not to feel like there was some bias behind that but I can't explain any other reason other than "Oh, but it's officially recognized as a TKO from knees and punches". A shot to the groin is illegal and a legitimate part of how it happened. Why would Wikipedia should to refuse to allow this to be put in his Mixed Martial Arts record? — Preceding unsigned comment added by No name74331 (talkcontribs) 13:54, 21 July 2016 (UTC)
