OK, and if you don't address all the issues within a day or two, and it is declined again, just resubmit the article using the code {{subst:AFC submission/submit}}.
Some expanded thoughts on your article:
  • Please try to maintain encyclopedic coverage. As I said in the review, mentioning individual cats' stories isn't necessary to the article and isn't very encyclopedic. That entire section about residents should be removed.
  • Please also try to maintain encyclopedic tone. A lot of it sounds a bit on the promotional side, such as "As is true for most great love stories, Tabby’s Place has a humble beginning" (that can be removed altogether), "Tabby's Place depends on the generosity of an international support base" (just say "Tabby's Place is funded by international donors"), "As an adoption center, it continues to serve as the perfect spot to find a loving pet, as Jonathan and Sharon Rosenberg intended" (perfect, loving, and intended are all expressions of opinion, not verifiable facts), "A model sanctuary, Tabby's Place exceeds the services offered at many sanctuaries" (calling it a model is an opinion; that sentence is really a complete opinion), and "Tabby was a well-cherished cat, which made life-altering day when the family learned that their beloved Tabby was stricken with untreatable squamous cell carcenoma" (well-cherished, life-altering, and beloved are all unnecessary as they are, again, opinion. Using words like stricken isn't recommended either—just say the plain facts that are supported by the references, like "Tabby was diagnosed with squamous cell carcenoma"). The above examples aren't all the instances where the article could be reworded or toned down, but I hope they will serve as a guide to help you revise the article.
  • Many of the references are not considered reliable. Using other Wikipedia articles as a reference is strongly discouraged; Wikipedia is not considered a reliable source even by its own users. Also, please don't use YouTube, which is not reliable, or references to online dictionaries—references are meant to back up and verify all the material in the article, and unless you are mentioning the definition itself and letting someone verify that definition, using the dictionary reference is redundant to simply linking the word to its relevant Wikipedia article for others to read. Also, using the sanctuary's own website is not recommended; it is a primary source. Good sources can be news articles, books, magazines, journals, etc. but they need to be independent of the topic of the article. Just remember that the sources are meant to back up specific material in article, so (going back to this sentence) "In his fifteen years with the Rosenbergs, Tabby was a well-cherished cat, which made life-altering day when the family learned that their beloved Tabby was stricken with untreatable squamous cell carcenoma [48]" includes a reference to a webpage about the disease, but that page does not actually say that Tabby had the disease, which is the fact in question. Quite a few of your references seem to be like this; they need to support the material in the article, not provide extra details about a certain word or item. For that sentence about Tabby, a possible source could be a magazine article talking about the sanctuary, which mentions Tabby and says that she had sqaumous cell carcenoma. If no such source exists (for that sentence or any other sentence), please remove the sentence as it is not verifiable material.
  • I realize that the above may cause a large portion of your article to be removed, but it is necessary for Wikipedia to maintain its goals of verified material, reliable sourcing, and encyclopedic material. Some news sources you may have overlooked can be found at this link.
  • One last note: did you personally take the pictures in the article? If you did, no worries. If not, that does not necessarily mean we cannot use them, but it will be much more complicated. If you got the images off their website, or someone else took them, they are likely copyrighted and we will need to delete them, as Wikipedia can only accept freely-licensed images (that is, not copyrighted under "All Rights Reserved"). If you obtained permission to use them under a free license, please tell me and we can figure that out. On the image description pages, you said that you took the pictures and have released them into the public domain, but I know that the upload form is very confusing (we're working on a new version!) and that often users choose the wrong choices by accident or without knowing, so I just wanted to make sure.

The pix are from pooled (mine are part of the pool) source of free-use images that folks working at Tabby's take (volunteers). It's great getting an image of a cat receiving socialization or physical therapy when it's working! OK, if you took the pictures used, it should be no problem. Keep working on the article some (there are a few more parts that could be reworded, such as "Cats are assured affection, a homelike environment, and uncompromising medical care"—assured/uncompromising are opinion, and some of the sources need to be reworked, as you still have a YouTube one and several definitions that aren't relevant to the facts in the sentences, such as http://www.chesternj.org/ : the sentence is about cats being rescued from the town; the reference goes to the town's website, which does not talk about the cats or help back up the info in that sentence. Also, you sometimes link to a website's home page; please try to link to specific pages on a website; i.e., rather than link to example.com, link to example.com/specific_page.)

Well, LinkedIn and MySpace are not considered reliable (social networking sites, content not reviewed, etc.), you can't really cite a Flickr search as a source, you shouldn't cite Wikipedia either, and the others are all primary sources. The twit.tv ones are podcasts of her speaking, while the BSD ones are all affiliated with her work. What we're looking for is something reliable, but also independent. Good sources can be news articles, books, magazines, journals, etc. They can be both online or in print, although the latter requires details like date, author, title, publisher, etc.
One other thing about the article is that it doesn't really say why she is notable, or why she should have a Wikipedia article. Has she won awards, achieved something major in her field, etc.? If so, please include that with a source. Thanks! —fetch·comms 21:31, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, IE is absolutely horrible and doesn't support most Wikipedia gadgets/scripts. Please stop using it if you can! (I recommend Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, both are free). Hey fetchcomms, you Welcomed me a few months back. How are you? I'm here because I have a question. I uploaded a logo I made, which incorporated one single aspect that I did NOT make, but WAS released in to public domain. The first time I published it, it IMMEADIATELY got removed (by a rather rude admin.) They claimed it was "clearly copyrighted material." So what should I do? reupload it as Public Domain material? BlackImperial name-jumping again

Hi Fetch. You remember BlackImperial of "Young Jonii" infamy? He recreated it a couple times more after the ANI closed, once trying to evade the salting you applied by creating it in mainspace as "Yung Jonii". Then when it got speedied from his userspace he created a new account (again). Reminders of all except the new account here, if needed. His new account is Zero.hack (talk · contribs). His first three non-userspace edits [1][2][3] to had to be reverted; I did two, but someone else beat me to one. Then he went on to create ... well, you'll see the effect of his subsequent work on his new talk page. He did have an admin delete the user page for BlackImperial, btw, but he certainly knows better by now than to just create a new account whenever he gets "bad press" for actions using the old one. You told him BlackImperial was the only account he could use, and I know I told him somewhere that if he ever found himself considering creating another account that he should first ask at the help desk whether his reason for wanting to do so was a permissable one. I've run out of good faith for this guy; he knows what he's doing. I put a note on his new talk page telling him to stop using the new account and go back to BlackImperial. By the way, I'm asking you nicely to try and make sure you type "I" rather than "i", which does make you look a bit like a child (at least, from a writing sort of view). If you ever delve into content work, you'll realize that proper spelling and grammar (particularly capitalization) when talking with others can improve their first impression of what your work will look like.
I'm even going to go so far as to ask you to remove, for now, the userbox that says "This user acts like he/she is an administrator on the English Wikipedia but really isn't.", because it's sort of evident from the first AN/I thread that this isn't really what the community thinks. I'm asking you nicely, and this is not meant to cause you any offence (nor is it required by any means, as your userboxes are your userboxes), but displaying that under the current circumstances does not really help to improve others' view of you.

Could you please explain...

You closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ashley Kirilow.

It is my understanding that {{afd}}s are not votes, and that closing admins are supposed to evaluate the arguments, pro and con, on their merits. It is my understanding that closing administrators have the authority to discount various kinds of arguments, including:

  • counter-policy arguments;
  • nonsensical arguments;
  • arguments at odds with the documented facts.

Your closure offers no clues as to whether you discounted any of the arguments offered.

The initial nomination claimed Kirilow was the subject of a single newspaper article. This was an argumen at odds with the documented facts.

When it was pointed out that this wasn't so the nominator then claimed she was a blp1e. I addressed the blp1e claim. No one, including two subsequent contributors, who echoed the claim Kirilow was a blp1e, addressed my counterpoints.

It seems to me that this is not how our decisions are supposed to be made. Our decisions are supposed to be arrived at through discussion. A consensus can only be arrived at through an exchange of views. When the parties holding the majority view simply ignore the inconvenient counter-arguments of a minority then I think it is a serious mistake to describe accepting the majority view as accepting a consensus.

Supposing, for the sake of argument, that my counter-arguments to the blp1e claim were invalid, I suggest it is clearly in the in interests of the project as a whole for someone to explain to me why my counter-argments were invalid. I certainly don't want to go around repeating the same mistakes, and as a prolific contributor, it is in the interest of the project for someone to try to explain why my counterarguments were invalid.

Since those who voted to delete all claimed blp1e, can I assume that if something you were prepared to accept was a second event were to occur, you would agree to restore the article, without a DRV? If so, what would you accept as a second event?

Kirilow has received death threats, as have her remaining supporters. Would you agree that if RS documented that someone killed her, or tried to kill her, that this would be a 2nd event? Would you agree it was a second event if anti-Kirilow elements merely tried to harm her, or one of her few remaining supporters?

A leading psychotherapist described Kirilow as an example of a person suffering from Munchausen by internet. Would you regard this as a 2nd event if the psychotherapist wrote an article that described Kirilow's case? What if they wrote a book?

Several RS documented that legitimate, mainstream charities were experiencing or anticipated a drop-off in their online donations due to the negative publicity associated with Kirilow's fraudulent online donation efforts. Neither the nominator, or any of those contributors who cast a blp1e vote, explained why they didn't recognize this phenomenon as a separate event. Is there some additional number of RS you would require before you recognized the effect Kirilow's fraud had on real charities as a 2nd event?

As the closing administrator, who accepted the blp1e votes without question or comment, and who discounted my counter-arguments, without explanation, who do you think I should call upon for an explanation of the reasoning behind your conclusion of the {{afd}}? The first keep comment was based on the timing of the AfD (which shouldn't play a deciding role in the AfD outcome), and the claim that there was some big media reaction in Canada, though no evidence was given for that statement. Your statement about local stories doesn't really have to do with NOTNEWS; an earthquake can be recorded by various international agencies but still be "routine" enough to be notable for Wikipedia. The quote says that because the scheme involved cancer, she became famous worldwide, but that does not say anything about being forgotten later on. Your Durham Region News source isn't really "significant" in its coverage of this event, but it does provide some context for similar stories. Perhaps you should simply write a new article about the actual event, with a section about Kirilow. She personally has not received much coverage for anything but this scam; your comment in the AfD was about the effect of her fraud, not her person. Even if someone tried to kill her, or if someone wrote an article about her behavioral state, that doesn't make her much more notable, as these events aren't themselves really notable enough to be a second event. (Now, maybe if she escaped from custody during the trial and tried to <probable BLP violation removed>...) The fact that charities were experiencing difficulties after Kirilow's fraud should go into an article about the fraud, not her. The last two comments in the AfD mention that there was an event: the fraud itself. We're not going to have a separate article on Effects of Ashley Kirilow fraud on charities, but as that is an indirect result of the fraud, we can have an article on that and include details of both Kirilow and the other charities. While BLP1E says "single event", I think it's quite a stretch to call the effects she had on charities a separate event. Could we have an article about a "run-of-the-mill" rapist and say there were two events, the physical rape and then the emotional distress felt by the victim, later causing her to commit suicide? No one recognized that this was a separate event because, frankly, it's not major enough to really constitute a separate event. Kirilow's article focused heavily on her fraud, which the AfD seems establish encompasses the aftereffects. The fact that no one did mention a separate event means that consensus is that the effects weren't separate "enough" from the fraud itself.
Shorter version: rather than worry about the existence or forthcoming of a second event, just write about the event and add sections about her and the charities' issues. I'll give you the deleted text, if you want it. —fetch·comms 23:46, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

Are you sure? Seems like they added something, self-reverted, then Bearian (talk · contribs) undid that, adding it back, then you reverted it back to the original. No evidence that it was vandalism, or you would be blaming Bearian, too. Probably an incorrect, but good-faith edit, to me. That should have been passed in PC anyway.   1. I don't really think IAR is something to use when comparing policy over guidelines, but trolling is often vandalism anyway. For obvious and complete spam (G11'able), you can revert it, but it's not not actually "vandalism" by the standard definition, so, yes, different edit summaries/warnings are needed. Use common sense when doing that, though; if there is useful sourced information, reword it, not remove it.
  2. You should continue to revert blatant vandals because it is the right thing to do, not only because you got your rights threatened.
  3. I'm pretty sure just asking Tommy what he meant would have cleared this up. He left the comment, and he's a pretty experienced vandal fighter. —fetch·comms 21:29, 10 September 2010 (UTC)

Advice please

Hi.

I've been looking for a random Admin to help me with something.

A while back I was the victim of an WP:OUTING (I am a registered user but I didn't want to post using it in case he wiki stalks me). There was nothing malicious about it so I got all the info removed from my page history and continued on my way.

Unfortunately me and the other user tend to edit the same pages and we have come to the point where I am ashamed to say that some of our edits have ended in an edit war, so I got blocked. Fair enough, I deserved it.

Now I'm afraid to edit any pages he edits as he knows my real name, my job, my previous job etc etc etc.

I'm not trying to run from my history (my block), but I wan't to retire my old account and create a new one and start again, trying to avoid him (this should be made slightly easier as he is currently in line for an indef block, but he also has a history for socking).

My question is, is it okay for me to do this? In theory would this be classed as a sock account of my main account and therefore against the rules?

I already fixed the move. Yes, the text is under the same copyright. However, that copyright requires attribution of the text, so if you copy it from one Wikipedia page to another without specifying the original source page, that breaches the copyright terms, as it would then be unattributed to the original source/author. —fetch·comms 01:16, 14 September 2010 (UTC)

GOCE September 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

Participation report — We have 71 participants in the September drive. 95 people signed up for the July drive, and in May we had 36.

Progress report — We have been making solid progress in eliminating the 2008 articles from the backlog so far. If we continue to focus our firepower we can completely wipe out 2008 from the queue. Overall volumes are lower than expected though, with nearly a thousand articles yet to be done if we are to meet our overall target. If you have not yet participated in the drive, we recommend you do so. If each person who signed up edits one article per day from now till the end of the month we can eliminate another 1,065 articles from the backlog. All contributions are appreciated.

Announcement: credit for 10k+ articles — Participants editing a 10k word article may claim credit for two 5k+ articles on the leaderboard. Those that edit a 15k word article may claim credit for three. Regardless, the article is still counted as a single article in the tallies.

Reminder — Articles from the Requests page can be included in your tally, even if they do not have a copy edit tag. This is a great place to go if you are interested in finding a higher quality article to work on.

The whole Darius Dhlomo thing

Hey fetch, I'd like to help check articles, but I'm not sure how CCI checking works. Take this article, for example. First off, how would you check this article for a CR violation? Just googling the lead sentence to see if it pops up anywhere? I assume you'd check the refs, but what else? Thanks -- Nolelover 22:19, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

It's quite complicated. For articles like that one, the tables probably aren't going to be vios (they aren't presented in any creative fashion or whatnot, I think), so check the individual sentences on Google, and anything that sounds suspicious, like written in a news-y tone or anything else that doesn't quite fit. Large chunks of text like that are an immediate tip-off; sometimes, some sources are used repeatedly, such as athlete databases; some wording of phrases are also repeatedly (boilerplate text). The article you linked isn't a vio as far as I can see. If you aren't sure still on what exactly to do, or if you see an article you're not sure about, try asking Moonriddengirl or VernoWhitney. CCI requires a lot of effort and mistakes aren't good, so don't be tempted to rush at all. —fetch·comms 03:04, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

Sometimes, ledes are going to be similar due because they should be organized per the MOS, etc. Try to look at the revisions at the time of Darius' edits; they are going to show the most likelihood of vios. For the articles you showed, it is very possible for the second paragraphs of each lede to be a cv; I could not find any online sources for them though, but you can remove it as "irrelevant", "unsourced", etc. —fetch·comms 14:17, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

How much time would that be? Especially considering that numerous, polite requests (from more than just NH) to slow down and learn the ropes are being ignored? I think that "more time" should coincide with someone actively reviewing such reverts to undo any damage done. The last time this happened, when such actions were reviewed, it was determined that a very very sizable number were erroneously done. But that's just my suggestion. I've done my best to leave helpful tips and advice, and I do know that you've went above and beyond in that respect (for which you should be commended for), but I see no good if those tips are ignored. I tried helping prevent the loss of TW by suggesting how to use it better, and to slow down, and to be very cautious in what he was reverting, and the response I got was a (paraphrased) "thanks, but hope you dont mind if I ignore most of your advice"

Thanks for the note. The extended rationale does make sense, yes, but could it possibly be reduced even a little, like to 800px wide? While showing the non-free content is key, sometimes, a slight loss of detail is still necessary. For example, we don't have album covers that are 700px wide so people can see the detailed artwork, we have them less than 400px wide so people can identify the cover. IE9 is fairly distinctive from IE8 and other browsers, so I don't think reducing it a bit will hurt its educational value or cause the viewer to not recognize elements of IE9. —fetch·comms 20:34, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

Album cover art is a very good example, although perhaps you should see it in comparison:

In this image, the size of the non-free contents from Microsoft corporation (which are critical for the non-free use rationale) is 1020×66 pixels which is 0.06732 megapixels. (The rest is the free Wikipedia.) A 300×225 pixels screenshot is worth 0.0675 megapixels in whole which is slightly bigger. However, a normal 3:4 artwork cover reduced to 400 pixels width would have 400×533 pixels, which is 0.2132 megapixels in whole. As you can see, the non-free contents of this image is less than the non-free contents in a 400 pixels wide cover art (which normally consists of 100% copyrighted work) or 300×225 screenshot (comprised of 100% copyrighted work).

Given all above, I think the current size of this image is the minimum acceptable.

The only thing I see missing is notability. Why is Al.com notable, or important enough, to have its own Wikipedia article? To be notable, a website should probably have either:
  • Have had other publications discuss the website in-depth. That could be another news website reporting about Al.com itself (the website itself, not the The Birmingham News, The Huntsville Times and Press-Register), a book talking about the website itself, or a magazine article about the website.
  • Won a well-known, major award from an independent organization.
Even the website of The New York Times does not have its own article. It is rather unusual for a news publication's website to be notable. Perhaps you can write about the website in one of the newspapers' articles or Advance Publications' article, but I do not think it is notable enough for its own article. However, doing this will still require you to back up and verify all the facts and information presented by citing independent sources, such as other news articles, books, and magazines. Regardless of whether it is its own article or whether it is included in another article, all information on Wikipedia should be verifiable by citing reliable, third-party sources (YouTube, Facebook, MySpace, etc. as well as its own website are not considered reliable or independent). /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 00:53, 24 September 2010 (UTC)

Uploading MO transit pictures

Greetings Fetchcomms. I want to ask for your help on uploading pictures in wiki commons, specifically flickr photos. I keep getting so fustrated over uploading transit pictures, I just want to pull my hair out. Can I ask for an example? Thank you for your time! (Jordan S. Hi Jordan! I use an easy online tool to help me upload Flickr images. Here's basically how it works:
  1. Make sure you are logged into Wikimedia Commons.
  2. Make sure the Flickr image is under either the CC-BY license or the CC-BY-SA license. If you aren't sure, go to the next step.
  3. Go to this page and fill in your username and the link to the Flickr page of the image.
  4. Click next, and follow the directions there.
  5. Once you save the page on Wikimedia Commons, make sure to click the link on that page so a robot will upload the image for you.
  6. Done!

Feedback - large increase in requests

The graph says it all, really; massive increase since we cleared the backlog and introduced a bit better system. As I've said before, it is a 'victim of its own success', I think. Currently, it is pretty backlogged.

Quite a few get missed, as you can see if you flick through the archives - but I don't know what we can do about that, really, other than hope more people give feedback.

The long-term solution would be to keep these editors; so many come to just create one article, and are never heard of again; if just a few of those stayed, and started giving feedback, then we'd have a more workable system.

I suggest discussion in this WT:FEED section. Cheers!

Signature

I'm torn about what to do. One the one hand, I'm violating the signature guideline because I use a template. On the other hand, if I use "full url", I think I will violate the character limit.

On the third hand, I've been posting at VP:T and at VP:M about the merits of this signature, and I feel like there is at least some hope that this concept will "catch on" in some way -- either by inspiring someone to develop some code that will make it work without violating our policies, or else by winning a consensus that it should be an exception to our policies.

My feeling is that, per WP:Bold, I can continue using this signature line on an experimental basis for maybe two or three weeks. At that point, if the code doesn't get written or the consensus doesn't change, I will most certainly switch to a non-offending signature line.

I love the idea. But there's currently no way to do it as one cannot subst revisionids, so the history is the only way to go. But I looked at your signature, and using the code

The issue with templates in signatures is, it causes server load every time a page is loaded, and any changes made the template will require a refresh of all those pages. Hi, this is user:Agradman. So just to clarify your user script idea -- when someone types ~~~~, the script would wait until the tildes were converted into the signature and datestamp, and then it would use that datestamp as an input into {{Freeze/link}} and substitute that for the datestamp? I think that's a swell idea! The {{Freeze/link}} template becomes a substitute for the purpose served by the datestamp. 69.143.104.250 (talk) 15:48, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

Basically, it would find any timestamps on the page, convert them to whatever format that the link in {{Freeze/link}} uses, and then links the timestamp text to that corresponding history entry. (You're not supposed to use {{Freeze/link}} by itself, according to the doc page, so I think that the javascript can just use the links without needing any template.) I'm not sure I'm explaining it well, so an example: /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 16:16, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
{{Freeze/link}} uses the corresponding non-talk page, so it shows the history of my userpage, and not this page, when you use it here. That's another reason why using just links is better. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 16:19, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

Template:Uw-sandbox

Whilst disappointed that this wasn't simply deleted via the TfD, at least it has been removed from Twinkle.

Merge with Template:Off-sandbox and Template:Sandbox-head, I think. (That is, redirect the others because the thing about the sandbox header is pretty much useless for warning.) And sure, it's not really a standard user "warning". Be bold and reword it then, I suppose, removing the whole thing about removing the header and whatnot. Hi, Fetch! I notice our old friend of so many names, BlackImperial, quit editing right after he was caught out creating a fifth account (Zero.hack) in a ten-day (or so) span, to avoid scrutiny re his previous sanctions. WikiCup 2010 September newsletter

We are half-way through our final round, entering the home straight. New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions) leads at the time of writing with 1180 points, immediately followed by Hungary Sasata (submissions) with 1175 points. Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) closely follows in third place with 1100 points. For those who are interested, data about the finalists has been compiled at Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/finalists, while a list of content submitted by all WikiCup contestants prior to this round has been compiled at Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/Submissions. As ever, anything contestants worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Despite controversy, the WikiCup remains open. Signups for next year's competition are more than welcome, and suggestions for how next year's competition will work are appreciated at Wikipedia talk:WikiCup/Scoring. September 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive Conclusion

GOCE September 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors September 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated! Several of our top editors were called away to real life concerns during the month (be careful out there, people!). This meant that once again, we did not meet all our lofty targets, but we did come close.

Stats

  • Out of 76 registered editors, 45 actively participated.
  • We nearly wiped out the 2008 articles from the backlog—there were only 13 remaining when the drive closed.
  • We reduced the backlog by 725 articles (11.5%), so it was another successful drive.
  • A total of 59 barnstars will be awarded to 40 editors—well done, and congratulations to all.

Barnstars
If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you edited in the July 2010 GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive, you may have earned rollover words, which counted towards this month's barnstars (except for the leaderboard awards). Any unused word credits will be held over for the next drive, as long as you participated in the September drive. Over the course of the next week or two, we will be handing out the barnstars.
