Classic book

Fetchcomms -

Would like any feedback/hints/tips for the Classic book article I resurrected from its previous incarnation as a stub of sorts.

And congratulations on your nomination.

Thanks!Shearonink (talk) 03:58, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

Very, very nice job! A few things: make sure that all the references are filled in--you still have a few plain links without author/date/publisher/title/etc. information. Also, I would change the "Quotes" section into a paragraph. Something like

The definition of a classic book varies among several prominent literary figures. American poet Ezra Sound said, "A classic is classic not because it conforms to certain structural rule, or fits certain definitions (of which its author had quite probably never heard). It is classic because of a certain eternal and irrepressible freshness." ....

You get the idea--just make it into prose, not a list of quotes (and remove the bold for that section). Lastly, you might want to use {{cite book}} for a standardized way to reference your book sources (we don't usually include the (c) Person). I gave it a quick dash fix, to conform with the WP:MOS, but it looks very good otherwise. fetch·comms 13:40, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for your suggestions. Have done your suggested tweaks, would appreciate your taking another look when you get the chance. Am hoping the article might now be worthy of a slightly higher 'class'-ratings on the two WikiProjects (Books and HIstory). And I'm going to go ahead and probably ask a pretty dumb question here...I'm having a hard time figuring out what the {{cite book}} actually means regarding the book sources and (c) Person?... Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 05:06, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

Cite book is like cite web--you plug in the information for the source and it generates the reference. So instead of writing out the whole book ref, you would do {{cite book|last=Smith|first=John|title=The title|year=2008|publisher=Publishers, Inc.|isbn=XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX|pages=24}}. fetch·comms 17:47, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

I *think* I've now fixed all the references. Thought you'd like to know that the quotes are completely gone. An ISP editor (58.169.10.1) came by and deleted the two I had left at the end of the article....kinda funny, they knew it didn't fit the tone of Wikipedia and yet they're not a registered-user... Nothing lost though...I had already integrated the Ezra Pound quote into the article (per your suggestion) and the Mark Twain quote had been in the article from the beginning. I've posted a request for Feedback (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_feedback/2010_July_7) but no hits there yet. Shearonink (talk) 12:03, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

It's not ready for DYK.... The DYK rules state that the article must be at least 1500 characters in length, but this article is only half that. fetch·comms 17:09, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

Questions concerning resubmission to articles for Creation

Hi, Back in May, I submitted a Chicanery (album) page to Articles for Creation. The page contained a fair use album cover image entitled “Low_Res_Cropped_Chicanery_Cover_Color.jpg”. The album page submission was rejected due to there not having been a page for the band at the time, and the file became orphaned and was deleted.

Since then, I have completed the band page, Chicanery, and that page is now live. Could you possibly retrieve the above album cover image, or should I upload the image all over again when I resubmit the album page to Articles for Creation? Also, should I resubmit the album page to Articles for Creation as if it were an entirely new submission at this point? Doc2234 (talk) 19:08, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

I can restore the image, but the album page needs to go live first, before we can use copyrighted images. You can also reupload it, it doesn't really matter (but the article still needs to be created first). And, you can just paste in all your updated album submission into the original page and add {{subst:AFC submission/submit}} to the top of it, or you can just make a whole new submission. Again, doesn't really matter. Cheers, fetch·comms 01:22, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
  • I will resubmit the album page to Articles for Creation, today.
You also flagged the three images that I used for the Chicanery band page as not having adequate documentation to support the license. I do have emails that provide permission from the owners, and I will forward those to the address you gave me, today also. I do have a security issue for one of the sets of email. Could we go offline with that issue prior to my sending in the full email record that I have? I will try to email you. Doc2234 (talk) 12:54, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
  • I just resubmitted the Chicanery (album) page to Articles for Creation, and I submitted copies of the emails that document permission for the files used on the Chicanery band page. Doc2234 (talk) 18:05, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Your last question in Connormah's RFA

Generally, I think candidates are asked too many questions but your last one there asking the candidate to "oppose himself" is clever. A few editors have asked me to go for the mop. So far I have declined because I can think of some very strong opposes for myself and I've yet come up with a good rebuttal to any of them.

Also, it reminds me of an idea I once had about asking RFA candidates to "write for the enemy". Example, asking an "ultra deletionist" to make a "keep" argument for a hypothetical AFD on something "crufty" like a minor fictional character or someone who is against the use of non-free images to make a "keep" arguments for a screenshot from a movie. Doing so would show if the candidate understands the thoughts and motivations of those with views he opposes and is still able to assume good faith. --Ron Ritzman (talk) 02:27, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Indeed, your idea is probably better than what I did simply because it does what you noted at the end--understanding different viewpoints while still AGFing. Would it be OK if I used that question in the future (I sort of stole the oppose yourself one from an anonymous user)? fetch·comms 02:31, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
No problem, but keep the "oppose yourself" one. --Ron Ritzman (talk) 02:38, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Changes to edit filter 339

Hey Fetchcomms,

First, thanks for the {{editprotected}} and congrats on the sysop-ing. I wanted to leave a comment about this change to edit filter 339. Using lcase eats up the condition limit (or so i have been told) and using the ugly regex is a more efficent way of doing the same thing. We dont really have to worry about the length of the filters code, rather the efficency. Because of this, I reverted one of your versions of the filter, back to your version that included Lesbian (good idea by the way). Thanks, Tim1357 talk 11:51, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

OK, no problem. I'm still trying to learn how the coding works and all, and Tim Song recommended the lcase method. In any case, are things like "homo" or "fag" covered in other filters that you know of, or should that be added to this one too? fetch·comms 21:22, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
Hmm thats weired. Shirik recomended the regex method. In any case, yes, fag and homo are covered in other filters (although off the top of my head I couldnt tell you which). The reasoning behind 339 is that the words "gay" and "homosexuall" are appropriate, when the subject is actually gay. Fag and homo, however, are rarely appropriate. Tim1357 talk 23:54, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
OK, no probs. Need a revdelete? :P fetch·comms 23:56, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
Hah, not at the moment. In fact, I hardly know what they are. Tim1357 talk 23:58, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

But there is something else: I was wondering if you would help me with a bot project I was working on. I need an admin because it involves downloading the wikitext of deleted articles, which I of course cannot do. Tim1357 talk 00:00, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Sure, if you tell me what needs to be done. fetch·comms 00:02, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
Well here is what I was thinking of doing: I want to have a bot patroll new pages and tag those that are blatantly vandalism, or attack pages. I was planning on using the CRM114 engine, which is the same thing that protects your gmail inbox from spam, by using AI. One "teaches" the engine by feeding it text, allong with a tag (good/bad for example). After a few rounds of this, the engine is suprisingly good. I have already made a list of pages deleted as G3, so all you would have to do is run a script to download their wikitext. Of course, that would mean allowing the script to log in as you. You can review the code before running it, or ask annother to look it over for you, to be sure the script wont do anything malicious. If you are at all uncomfortable with this, It will be no insult to me if you decline. Cheers, Tim1357 talk 00:15, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
Few quick questions--how many pages, how long (can I do it today or tomorrow?), am I saving the pages onwiki or not, and is this allowed (or specifically banned)? Thanks, fetch·comms 00:34, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
As many as you care to do, the more the better. Remember that its a script so you just have to start it. I havent writen the script yet, so this was just a test to see if you were willing, it would be in a few weeks when I get back home. No, you would be emailing the pages to me because its easier and I dont think you are allowed to save them to the wiki. Finally, I do not know of any rule banning this, but I have been wrong before. Ill ask arround. Tim1357 talk 00:41, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
As long as it's OK (I'd ask the BAG or maybe even ArbCom), I can do it. fetch·comms 00:45, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
Im on the BAG, and there isnt really a problem with it in terms of bot policy. Ill find the time to ask at the Admins Noticeboard sometime. Tim1357 talk 09:17, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Speedy deleted subjects that are notable

Hi Fetchcomms. I've come across a contrubtion history that includes the nomination of numerous notable article subjects for deletion. Many of the articles themselves were in poor shape (many were created years ago when standards were different) so they got speedied, but many of the subjects are notable or can be merged. How do I go about getting them restored so they can be fixed properly? There seems to be resistance to using DRV, even though the article subjects shouldn't have been speedily deleted in the first place.

Also, I can't see the article histories without having them restored. I'm not out to ruffle feathers, but I hate to see the work of others lost or destroyed by a series of mistakes that can be easily rectified. It's troubling to me that I'm being attacked for trying to fix things that are broken and that the focus for many isn't on what's best for the encyclopedia, but if there's a more discrete way to go about the process I'm certainly open to it. I suppose userfication is one route, but then the workload is totally on me and this is supposed to be a collaborative enterprise. Is there some other way to go about getting them properly worked up, merged etc? Perhaps involving the article rescue squadron? Freakshownerd (talk) 16:16, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

I can undelete and usury pages for you, but I'm not sure about involving others. If DR doesn't work, you can try the article incubator, but from my experiences there, it's not the most efficient or popular area either. If you can get me a list, though, of deleted articles, I can see which are salvagable, usury them, and ask some others for help with sourcing and whatnot. fetch·comms 21:25, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
Hi Fetchcomms. Thanks for the reply. Would you mind undeleting Hard Leaders and redirecting o Kickin Records. I don't think there is much to merge. Freakshownerd (talk) 21:26, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

Margaret Jull Costa entry

Dear Fetchcomms,

I'm writing a biographical entry on Margaret Jull Costa for the Oxford History of Literary Translation in English, and I'm wondering if you have any leads on her date and place of birth and information about her early life. Any information you can provide would help our project of highlighting the contributions of twentieth-century translators.

All best,

I don't know why you are asking me... I have no clue who she is, and I can only suggest to you searching on Google Books or Google Scholar. My only edit to that page was adding a tag. It would be greatly helpful if you could expand the Wikipedia article about her as well, as it is in need of some work. fetch·comms 16:29, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

Hello Fetchcomms,

You recently edited a submission of mine entitled Siena Research Institute. I am having difficulty including citations that are acceptable to Wikipedia. I look at similar pages like Marist Poll and see that they too only included their web page as a source. What makes my case different?

Jantonov1 (talk) 18:15, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

A common misconception is modeling new pages after existing ones. Unless you use a featured article or good article as your guide, it is not the best idea to do so. We have lots of rubbish articles that need to be removed; please consider sending something you feel does not belong here to Articles for deletion. All new articles are still expected to cite independent reliable sources, and if none or very few exist, the subject is likely not notable enough for inclusion. fetch·comms 20:17, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

Recent article placed on hold

Fetchcomms, I am trying to figure out what suggestions I made without third party reference for my article on the University of Mississippi School of Law. I referenced the sources I used. Where did I go wrong?

Travisbrackin (talk) 23:52, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

OK--the first three sources are the same link, and it's just a listing of the statistics and such. That doesn't constitute "significant coverage". The last link is their own website, and it's not an independent source. We're looking for things like news articles, books, magazines, etc. that cover the law school. Right now, I think that the article could be merged into the existing University of Mississippi article, unless the law school is especially notable by itself for some special reason. The individual "School of Whatever Subject" bits don't generally need their own article, as they aren't usually notable enough by themselves. fetch·comms 23:58, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

Waterfall

Regarding User:Fetchcomms/Waterfall can you tell me why this page is required? The practice of protecting things by cascade-protected user pages has been discontinued for some time now I believe. Would you consider unprotecting it and using Wikipedia:Cascade-protected items instead? That way, there is a central place where these things can be discussed. Thanks — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 16:49, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

I realize that, but it's just my personal listing of all the high-risk templates that have been protected already. I don't see any harm in adding another protected userpage listing like all the others that have existed, but if you feel strongly about this, I'll just delete it. fetch·comms 19:05, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
Okay, but the thing is that is doesn't have any additional benefit that I can see. Doing what you have done does not make it "more protected". And it just makes it more of a pain when it is actually decided that protection is unwarranted. (It feels slightly awkward having to go into someone's userspace.) Protection is a project-wide issue and not related to any particular user. Therefore I still feel that these pages are not helpful. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 14:19, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
Deleted, then. Your reasoning makes sense, as always. fetch·comms 20:05, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

IPBE

I am strongly concerned that you gave IPBE to GregJackP (talk · contribs). Could you describe the review process you went through when determining that he was a valid candidate for IPBE? Hipocrite (talk) 20:04, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

He was caught under an Opera Mini rangeblock. From my experience, these rangeblocks are usually just precautionary proxy blocks, except that Opera Mini uses proxies as a part of their software design, not like Tor. Greg's an established user, and I left a note for Brandon, the blocking CU. I am aware of the SPI case he was involved in recently, but the result was no evidence of socking and the block he received last month was not for that reason. The SPI verified that he uses mobile browsers quite often, and I didn't see any harm in giving him IPBE when he is on a shared IP like that. Was there something in particular that you had issues with? fetch·comms 20:17, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
I dispute that GregJackP is an established user. I suggest that he is a highly problematic agenda editor, who is, at this point, not trustworthy enough for IPBE. Hipocrite (talk) 20:22, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
Will you take your global warming accusations elsewhere? He was caught on a routine block that had nothing whatsoever to do with any specific editing or editors; I will not starve the project of users just because of your disputes with him. He is established in the fact that he has several thousand edits and has been around for some time; I never said "well-established in your book". This is a completely legitimate use for IPBE, and if he ends up misusing the privilege, it'll be revoked and him possibly blocked. I already gave him the disclaimer. I refuse to be roped into everyone's disagreements over global warming and whatnot, so if you have further issues, ask a checkuser to verify again the need. fetch·comms 20:29, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Thanks for taking a look. If it becomes relevent, I will do so. As a side note, the dispute that GregJackP has with me and WMC has nothing to do with Global Warming. Best wishesHipocrite (talk) 20:30, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
That's nice. Arguing is all the same to me. fetch·comms 20:32, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
Apologies for the ec - I was adding some pleasantries when you responded - I just wanted to be clear that I have no concerns with what you did now that I understand that it was evaluated. Hipocrite (talk) 20:33, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
Mm, I could be nicer too. I just get tired of disputing users. Always good to have someone check over your work, though. Cheers, fetch·comms 20:36, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

UM Law

Fetchcomms,

Do I still need more sources for my Ole Miss Law article? I'm new to Wikipedia editing/article creation, but I would really like to see this get online. I have elaborated on the "notability" of the subject and added two new third party sources. Any more specific suggestions? I have noticed that most law schools in my native state of Texas have their own pages with similar content. The Texas Tech Law article has fewer sources than mine.

Travisbrackin (talk) 01:15, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

I would still try to find another one or two independent sources--some of the content still relies on their own website. Also, the list of notable alumni should be backed up by sources, too. Other pages with poor sourcing is unfortunate, and we may even have to delete them later--so it's best to have new articles sourced well. fetch·comms 01:20, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

UM Law

Fetchcomms,

I added third party sources to every entry in "notable alumni." Will this do the trick? Also, should I remove the sources posted from olemiss.edu (a press release and an article from UM lawyer magazine)?

Thanks for the help!

Treeshaping

-Thank you fetchcomms for welcoming me to wikipedia. I have become involved because I am interested in treeshaping. I joined wiki after seeing the history of the article . On the article page and the discussion page that I have been watching for months now, there seems to be a lot of conflict and domination cordinated by the creator of the word arborsculpture. The article has been completely changed and does not reflect the reality of the art form. When I google arborsculpture I am lead to a marketing funnel that has merchantdise for sale. When I pointed this out it was ignored as the comment was not in agreement with the editor duff who wants to be in control. What can I do about this ? I am only a new editor and after making three comments have landed my self with a sock puppet investigation from duff. Please advise me of the best form of action. Thanks Sydney Bluegum (talk) 04:28, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi there, and welcome. Fetchcomms is away for a few days, so you're getting an answer from me, I'm afraid.
I've had a bit of a look at the article, discussions, etc. Quite surprising that this topic is so hotly disputed, and has been for a long time - see Wikipedia:Mediation Cabal/Cases/2008-12/Arborsculpture.
Re. the sock-puppet accusations; the case was closed, with no evidence, so I think you can simply forget that, put it behind you.
I see that other editors have advised you about editing other articles, and this actually is good advice. It is important to remember that there is no deadline. Wikipedia will be around for many years, so if one article is a bit 'wrong' for a while, it really doesn't matter. With that in mind, I do suggest you get involved in editing a few different articles, a) because it'll be more fun than arguing, b) because you will gain more experience of Wikipedia, c) because you would later be in a much better position to argue any of the complex problems with that specific article.
Maybe you could join Wikipedia:WikiProject Horticulture and Gardening, or any other project groups tht interest you.
Please note, I am not dismissing your concerns about the specific article; there are ways to resolve things; merely, I am saying that there are 6,822,394 -1 other articles that all need attention, and if that one is problematic, then it might be best to leave it for later.
If I can personally help or advise in any way, please feel free to leave a note on my own talk page, or get live help. Best,  Chzz  ►  13:49, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

GOCE July 2010 backlog elimination drive chart

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive! We have now passed the halfway point, so here's an update.

Progress Report - Progress toward the targets has been good. 751 articles out of the approximately 1,600 we would like to get completed by the end of the month were done by July 15, so we will be very close to meeting the target for volume. However, we would like to clear all of the 2008 articles from the backlog, and there are still 892 left to do. Please consider choosing one of these older articles when looking for something to copy edit. If we focus our firepower we can completely wipe out 2008 from the queue.

Participation Report - 95 people signed up for the July drive. This is a great result compared to May, when we had 36. However, in May only one person that signed up didn't do any copy edits, and in July only 59 of the 95 have posted any copy edits on the big board.

The task may seem insurmountable but please remember that if all 95 participants copy edit just one article a day from now until the end of the month, we will eliminate 1,300 more articles from the backlog. So please consider participating at whatever level you can! All contributions are appreciated.

This newsletter was prepared for the GOCE by Diannaa (Talk), S Masters (talk), and The Raptor Let's talk.

Gbiasi

Hi Fetchcomms--

I added a few sources for my article. Would you mind taking another look? I look forward to your comments. Thanks! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Gbiasi/NationalAssociationoftheRemodelingIndustry Gbiasi (talk) 15:25, 19 July 2010 (UTC)gbiasi

Hi there. Fetchcomms is away for a few days, so I'm keeping an eye on his talk page.
The draft in User:Gbiasi/NationalAssociationoftheRemodelingIndustry still has some problems, because it is not neutral, and contains many facts which do not have appropriate independent reliable sources.
Please note that the following are examples only, for illustration; it is not an exhaustive list, but to try to explain the issues;

Non-neutral statements

  • the organization continues to prosper
  • meetings allow individual members the opportunity to directly participate
  • an impartial panel of judges who are experts

-These are not facts, they are opinion.

Unreferenced assertions

  • roots go back to 1935
  • more than 100,000 thousand individuals [...etc...] belong to NARI
  • provided the remodeling industry with its first formalized standard of expertise
  • Some sections are not encyclopaedic, for example "Code of Ethics" probably fails WP:NOT; unless independently documented and analysed in some independent reliable source, that type of content is not permitted.
  • In addition, the draft has lots of advert-like wording; the sections on phrases such as NARI has positioned itself as a strong influencer in the building industry as a whole, having potential to change economic climates... is, frankly, pure spam.
It is extremely difficult to write a neutral article when you have a conflict of interest, which is why we strongly recommend against it. Please, edit some other articles - even if you come back to this later, by getting involved in other Wikipedia edits, you will gain a better understanding of the systems, and be in a better position to look again at this one, later. There is no deadline. Best,  Chzz  ►  14:09, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

IPBE follow-up

Just to let you know that the Opera Mini range block has been resolved and Brandon removed the IPBE for me. I really appreciated that you helped me with this as I use my mobile phone quite a good deal to edit. Anyway, just wanted to let you know that it is not an issue anymore, and that the flag was removed since I don't need it anymore. Thanks, GregJackP Boomer! 16:53, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Deletion of Caesary wiki

You deleted the Caesary wiki seen at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caesary. Why did you accuse it of being "promotional"? Lots of people were using that page as a reference. Caesary is a newly launched MMORTS game with press releases already posted on the web. MPOGD.com had a press released on Caesary when it first launched. It's absurd to think that a page used for reference would be deleted because it's being accused of "promoting" a product. Windrider07 (talk) 18:15, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi there. Fetchcomms is away for a few days.
The article was correctly deleted as CSD G11, as it was "Unambiguous advertising or promotion [...] would need to be fundamentally rewritten to become encyclopedic.
The first part of the article included the text, has been regarded as one of the best browser games of Year 2010, which is clearly non-neutral, and a matter of opinion, not fact.
The bulk of the article, the "Gameplay" section, was not appropriate encyclopaedic content; it fails WP:NOTGUIDE.
The only two references given were primary sources, and it is essential that any article has several independent reliable sources - see WP:VRS. I understand what you are saying - that people would use the page as reference - but it is not the duty of this encyclopaedia to help make things 'famous' - instead, we report on all subject that are already covered in other publications.
Please take the time to read the business FAQ, and consider other options for that type of content. If you wish to edit other articles, which do have independent reliable sources, then I'm sure you will enjoy Wikipedia much more. Best,  Chzz  ►  19:33, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Image clearly uploaded by the webmaster

You recently tagged the following image for deletion(File:CCVFD1251A.JPG now named File:Chaires-Capitola VFD - Air, Power & Light Trailer.jpg). If you look carefully at the name on the summary, the article that it's attached to, and all similar images, you'd realize that the this was submitted by the editor himself or herself, specifically a member of the Chaires-Capitola Volunteer Fire Department. ----DanTD (talk) 02:52, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi DanTD, Fetchy is away for a few days, so I am stalking his talkpage. The image says the origin is "Department Photo", I think we need OTRS permission, so I have asked the user if they can email us. Hope that sounds OK with you. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  19:47, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
Sounds pretty good. It'll sound better if the department and the uploader are recognized as one in the same. I know Fetch is offline, and I would've like to have sent this to wherever FFD pages normally go, but I didn't see a link in the banner for CSD F11 pages, so I had to sent this message wherever I could. ----DanTD (talk) 21:40, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

The proposed deletion was removed [1], so there is no imminent danger, only the possibility of a later deletion discussion, and if that does happen, you'll have the chance to make a case...if it has decent refs, it is unlikely to happen at all.  Chzz  ►  20:45, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

Copyright of photos

How am I suppose to prove that I took a picture. The copyright is being disputed on the picture File:Squirethatisbrickandred.JPG, which I myself took and release as free domain. I'm not much involved in the wikipedia project anymore, but would like to see pictures that contribute to articles stay. Any help would be great, thanks. Gephart (talk) 22:01, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

In general, you should upload free pictures at Commons, and you shouldn't have problems if you select "It is entirely my own work" and fill in the boxes.
That specific picture, File:Squirethatisbrickandred.JPG, seems OK now; apparently a discussion resulted in a further 'public domain' tag being added [2] by Explicit (talk · contribs) - I'm not quite sure about the reason, so I've asked that user if they can explain further. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  20:42, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
The PUF nomination is here. I should note that my original edit summary was botched, I left out the "5" out of "25" when linking to the discussion... oh well. Anywho, {{PD-Pre1978}} applies in this case because, as IronGargoyle had pointed out, the sculpture was erected before 1978 without a copyright notice. Hence, the image is licensed under the public domain. — ξxplicit 20:50, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

Non free files

Hi Fetchcomms, I had a question about this file which is from commons and being used on Macintosh startup#Sad Mac. It's not free (a screenshot of Google Chrome) so I'm planning to tag it for speedy deletion on commons. Is there a way to port it over here? I think it's useful, and can fix up the fair use rationale. Thanks, Airplaneman 23:54, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

Basically, save a copy, reupload, and name the Commons user as the author and link to the deleted page as a source. It's not ideal, when deleted, but if it's ever tagged, a Commons admin can figure it out. fetch·comms 00:02, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
Tagged on Commons (to the best of my ability) and uploaded to enwp (at File:Google Chrome "Aw snap" death screen.png), with fair use rationale. However, it would be better at Google Chrome imho. mono 00:07, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
Ah, OK. I was just wondering if there was a way to import and preserve the original author's upload. Thanks guys, Airplaneman 00:16, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 July newsletter

We are half-way through our penultimate round, and nothing is yet certain. Pool A, currently led by Hungary Sasata (submissions) has ended up the more competitive, with three contestants (Hungary Sasata (submissions), Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) and New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions)) scoring over 500 points already. Pool B is led by New South Wales Casliber (submissions), who has also scored well over 500. The top two from each pool, as well as the next four highest scorers regardless of pool, will make it through to our final eight. As ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Planning has begun for the 2011 WikiCup, with open discussions concerning scoring and flags for next year's competition. Contributions to those discussions would be appreciated, especially concerning the flags, as next year's signups cannot begin until the flag issue has been resolved. Signups will hopefully open at some point in this round, with discussion about possible changing in the scoring/process opening some time afterwards.

Earlier this round, we said goodbye to Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions), who has bowed out to spend more time on the book he is authoring with his wife. We wish him all the best. In other news, the start of this round also saw some WikiCup awards sent out by Finland Suomi Finland 2009 (submissions). We appreciate his enthusiasm, and contestants are of course welcome to award each other prizes as they see fit, but rest assured that we will be sending out "official" awards at the end of the competition. If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive Wrap-up

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated in the drive! Over 100 editors—including Jimbo Wales—signed up this time (nearly triple the participants of the May drive). This benefited the Guild as well as the articles in need of copy editing. You can see from the comparison graphs that we increased the number of completed copyedits substantially. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet our goal of completely wiping out 2008 from the queue. We also were not able to reduce the backlog to less than 6,000 articles. We suspect people were busy with real life summertime things, at least in the northern hemisphere! We were able to remove the months of January, February, March, April, and May from the backlog, and we almost wiped out the month of June. We reduced the backlog by 1,289 articles (17%), so all in all it was a very successful drive, and we will be holding another event soon. We'll come up with some new ideas to try to keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, everybody!

Stats
If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you edited in the May 2010 GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive, your word totals are cumulative for barnstars (not the leaderboard). Over the course of the next week or two, we will be handing out the barnstars.

Hello, Fetchcomms. You have new messages at Imzadi1979's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

It was not lacking any information. It was a very low resolution fair use image. The source was present. --Mbz1 (talk) 22:05, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

There's no copyright tag. fetch·comms 22:06, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
Have you looked at the history of speedy deletions for that file? It was nominated on deletion on July 24. I voted to keep it, nobody else voted at all. So why speedy once again? It is a fair use image that is all, but impossible to get a free equivalent. --Mbz1 (talk) 22:13, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
That's not the point. I didn't delete based on the FFD, I deleted based on the fact that it had no copyright tag. If you want me to undelete it so you can slap on a {{non-free historic image}} or a {{non-free fair use in}} tag, please request that. Otherwise, please see {{db-f4}}. fetch·comms 22:15, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
Where should I request it?--Mbz1 (talk) 22:22, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
Here? I'll do it now, sigh. fetch·comms 22:24, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
I did, but I probably did something wrong. Could you please fix it? Thanks.--Mbz1 (talk) 22:30, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
  • I understood, and fixed it myself. Thank you.--Mbz1 (talk) 22:38, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
I've done it some time ago here or I shuld do something else? Thanks.--Mbz1 (talk) 22:45, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
