Re plagiarism

Since it's getting a bit off-point for here, let me bring it here.

You're missing the point of what plagiarism is and is not and hence coming into conflict with other authors. It's not about "the exact words". That's the High School approximation to the idea of plagiarism and a prime example of applying the letter, rather than the spirit, of a policy (which is against policy). Plagiarism is about theft of ideas and/or credit. The principle of avoiding plagiarism is "credit where credit is due". If I paraphrased someone else's work (without using a single "exact phrase") and claimed it as my own that would be the most deceitful form of plagiarism. I found that writing a Doctoral thesis and considering how my ideas might be stolen gave me a broader perspective on intellectual property issues. Maybe you would also benefit from the exercise. "You're missing the point" Actually not. They're both wrong. What troubles me is both spirit & letter being ignored on WP. The principle behind plagiarism may be theft of ideas; the execution is (often) theft of words. I draw no distinction, because if you're stealing phrasing, it's not your work anymore.

"If I paraphrased someone else's work (without using a single "exact phrase")" Do I take you to mean you'd object to use of information contained in a source? How, then, do you do research? That is a paraphrase, no? Or did you mean only without citation?

BTW, since you seem to've gotten a bit bent out of shape over this, I'm prepared to believe it was inadvertent; take a look at some of WP's submarine pages, which are direct verbatim lifts from DANFS, & it's easy to suspect plagiarism everywhere. I've inadvertently borrowed, myself (an essay on the Pacific War used a view from Blair I'd read years before & adopted, without recalling it wasn't original to me), so I'm very careful about it, now, & sensitive other people may not be so careful. As noted, I take the approach quote & cite always, & there's no question that way. I imagine that makes me seem narrow-minded; just very careful. I didn't get burned for it; I don't want somebody getting burned badly for taking WP on faith if we're not careful enough about it.

One other thing. In retrospect, I should've brought the concern here in the first place, rather than put it on the talk page, but in looking at the page history, it looked like it came from an anon IP, & I wanted a public notice if an anon was copying. I took a couple swings at it, but couldn't get it to budge. That's in line with my frustration with the timeline facility: it doesn't behave intuitively. I'm not very experienced though, and assume I'm mostly to blame for its shortcomings.  :-(

Tank

Thank you for the medal and the chevrons, although to be honest I had not expected it since I haven't written anything major for Wikipedia in almost a year (although, I plan to expand the Verdeja article, beginning tomorrow - an article on Spain's most successful tank program can not left in such a pity state!). I added two references to the Tank article, although none specifically state that ETC is the most mature of alternate technology to powder guns and liquid propellants. OTOH, the first reference offers a glimpse of ETC compared to EM, whilst the second reference details the integration of the XM291 into the turret of a modified M8 armored gun system. The ETC article needs to be updated, as there is a lot of information I have access to now and not before; new information can be read in an article, which I can't link because apparently invisionfree is blacklisted . So, after the Verdeja article (which I will try to get featued, like the T-26) I hope I have time to work on that ETC article some more. A question on the timeline you made for the article. The Challenger 2 was never retrofitted with a 120mm smoothbore gun. There are plans to retrofit Rheinmetall's 120mm L/55 tank-gun soon, and it has been covered in Janes. re: Tank links

Hi Dhatfield, The links I removed were of low importance to this particular topic (eg, the Danish tank website and the website on the US Army's next generation of tanks - there are great links for articles on this particular topics, but not needed for these high-level article) or outright unencyclopedic (eg, the "private photos showing US tanks with humorous mobility problems in Iraq" and the videos which "while excellent, are advertorial in nature"). WP:EL states that links "should be kept to a minimum of those that are meritable, accessible and appropriate to the article" and I *think* that removing these links was in line with it. regards, Nick Dowling (talk) 11:11, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

Portal:Computer generated imagery

You have to remember that it's a really big topic. Things like MRI, catscan, structure of DNA or proteins can be a great addition towards pictures or articles. As for biography, I'm afraid I don't know much about people in this field. OhanaUnited^{Talk page} 18:26, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

I know, I'm only scratching the surface - amazing there isn't something out there already. I am going for fields where images are artificially created - minimal sensor / environment interaction, so no MRIs, no SEMs, no photos (despite the use of CCDs and microprocessors in cameras). I haven't been too consistent about that, thanks for the heads up. I believe molecular modeling is hidden in there somewhere, but thanks for the idea, I'll add more on this. I found this one (Image:Lone House.jpg). This picture, although looks like a normal scenic view, is actually generated by computer completely. It will be a great addition to the page. And just a reminder, portals are entry page for specific topics or areas. You should aim for a broad spectrum. Eliminating MRIs and some photos may not be good decision. Thanks for your input. Lone House is Selected picture/1 :) There is a featured Portal:Photography and we need to restrict the scope to something manageable and definable - how to draw the line with photos? I actually thought a Portal:3D imagery, Portal:Computer Illustration, etc. would be more appropriate. Good to know that you don't see this topic as overly broad. We may extend once we have a viable 'first draft', but I personally feel that photography and SEMs get enough coverage and recognition. MRIs, maybe less so, and there is a good case to be made that they are more 'computer generated' since they are typically are a Radon transform of numerous individual scans - but that strays into Image Processing and opens a whole lot more doors. Tank Task Force

Nice timeline

Even if it does start in 1945 :) Most Wiki timelines are too long for something like that, so need to be vertical and not horizontal.One day when I have more time, I'll figure out how to do large vertical timelines, but I'm not sure why people call their articles "timelines" without the actual lines, because without the graphical timeline they are just lists--mrg3105 (comms) ♠♥♦♣ 01:24, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

Copyedits Domitian

Here are some notes on your recent copyediting of Domitian. I really appreciate your efforts in proofreading the text on grammar and spelling, BUT I can't always agree on your improvements. Some disputed edits:

• Administration:
  • "Domitian" instead of "Domition". Minor spelling error of course.
  • "expelled from the Senate" instead of "expelled". Otherwise it might imply senators were somehow exiled altogether.
  • First sentence of the second paragraph. Besides being grammatically incorrect now (I suppose you meant "become" instead of "became"), the structure altered the original content of the sentence somewhat. The idea is that "Domitian was determined to govern the Empire conscientously" --> therefore --> "he became personally involved in all branches of the administration".
  • "qualities he found more often in men of the equestrian order". In your edit, the words "more often" were removed, BUT, it's not true that Domitian excluded senators/patricians from his government completely (e.g. Nerva), which is what your version otherwise implied.
  • "imperial policy" instead of "his imperial policies". I think it should be either "Imperial policy" or "his policies". There seems to be something wrong with "his imperial policies", though I can't quite put my finger on it.
  • Why choose "absolute power" over "autocracy"? I think using "autocracy" occasionally adds some variation instead of always using the word "absolutism" or "absolute power", no?
  • "became apparent to all that...", is a rather long-winded way of saying the same thing from the original.
  • "primarily at Alba". You removed primarily, but Domitian did in fact spend time in Rome prior to the completion of the Flavian palace. There were other palaces, like the one of Tiberius. So adding "primarily" seems more correct to me.
• Economy:
  • "the fire of 79" instead of "a further fire". This is the fire which was earlier discussed in the "Ceremonial Heir" section.

Window width of Portal:Computer graphics

Dhatfield, I am honored that you like my CG graphics well enough to include them in Portal:Computer graphics. Allow me to make a suggestion:

The Web standard for laying out pages now assumes a minimum monitor resolution of 1024 pixels across without requiring the user to scroll. MSNBC.com, ABC.com, and CNN.com all observe this practice. And all lay out their pages to give several pixels of slack. MSNBC requires 1011 pixels whereas both ABC and CNN require 1017 pixels. So someone with a 1024-pixel monitor can set their browser screen to utilize close to their entire computer monitor and then see entire Web pages without scrolling. Note that as you currently have it laid out, Portal:Computer graphics requires 1083 pixels.

Please also note two issues. First, the measurements I’ve cited here are based on Safari on a Mac; different browsers and OS will produce slightly different values. Note too that I have a 1440-pixel screen, so it’s not a matter of my having a problem here. It’s just that I normally set my Safari window’s width to barely “eat” CNN and rarely need to scroll anywhere on the Web. That’s the only reason I noticed.

Regarding the "Second Cold War" (1979–85) section, your copyedited version seems a little bit to much. In my opinion, the section is quite good as it is now, although it might face some minor copyediting issues. I will try to convince you that this article is broken and a substantial rewrite is necessary:

1. As you noted, this article is a "top-importance article rated nr. 10 on WP:MHSP". It also covers a politically charged topic. As a result, it must be impossible to suggest bias of any kind and that means we must present all relevant facts when discussing an issue. Maybe I over-reacted to your pro-US bias by swinging too far in the opposite direction, but I don't think you can dispute that all I did was add facts.
2. This article has failed prior FAC nominations due to (including other issues) POV problems. While copyediting may have been addressed to an extent, POV has not been substantially corrected. I say that because this article is clearly written from the point of view of a US national or supporter. That is a violation of one of WP's most basic policies. It will continue to fail FAC until this is addressed.
3. The article as it stands has a number of contradictions with linked articles. Able Archer 83, a FA, comes to completely different conclusions regarding the significance of that exercise.
4. You rely fairly heavily on Gaddis for citation - consider that he is no less subject to bias than anyone else.
5. A relatively minor problem (but also a big problem) is the structure of the "Second Cold War" section. Afganistan is mentioned at the beginning and end of the section. As it stands there is no structure in this section either chronological or as topics. I used the fourth level headings to indicate that I was re-organising it by topic, but the headings themselves are not essential.

I have great respect for your work, but please consider this issue carefully because a failure to see bias is a natural consequence of bias. Dhatfield (talk) 14:40, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

Sincerelly, my problem is that your copyediting style does not sound very well - we should use more broad phrases instead the many simple sentences used by you. My other problem was, that after your final copyedit version of the End of the Cold War section, the section itself needed another copyediting and referencing check. I have no problem with any improvement idea, as long as it is well executed until the end, considering all possible issues - in order to have this article promoted to FA, we have to take care of all the possible minor issues and tweaks. Factual (especially addition of facts), style, structure, grammar & POV problems: the edits are extensive and necessary. I can't do those edits by "remote control" through the discussion page. If it weren't for my reluctance to interfere in the FAC process I would make the changes and they could be discussed as per the usual process for any established editor. None taken, but I didn't see that the existing section is chronological, so I had organised by themes. In fact, you may want to look at whether other sections of the article are chronological. For example, in "Confrontation through detente", you write "As a result of the 1973 oil crisis,[94] combined with the growing influence of Third World alignments such as the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and the Non-Aligned Movement, less-powerful countries had more room to assert their independence and often showed themselves resistant to pressure from either superpower. Moscow, meanwhile, was forced to turn its attention inward to deal with the Soviet Union's deep-seated domestic economic problems. If you'd look more carefully the paragraph is about the "struggle [of the two superpowers] to adjust to a new, more complicated pattern of international relations in which the world was no longer divided into two clearly opposed blocs" - this started before the next event described in this section, which is Operation Power Pack (1965). Indeed, I found a fact that did not respect the chronological order, and it was re-located ("On November 13, 1968, during a speech at the Fifth Congress of the Polish United Workers' Party, Brezhnev outlined the Brezhnev Doctrine, in which he claimed the right to violate the sovereignty of any country attempting to replace Marxism-Leninism with capitalism. During the speech, Brezhnev stated:[100] "When forces that are hostile to socialism try to turn the development of some socialist country towards capitalism, it becomes not only a problem of the country concerned, but a common problem and concern of all socialist countries". The reasons for adopting such a doctrine had to do with the failures of Marxism-Leninism in states like Poland, Hungary and East Germany, which were facing a declining standard of living, in contrast with the prosperity of West Germany and the rest of Western Europe.[101]") - this was placed after the Soviet invasion Czechoslovakia. I would say that such comments within the FAC of this article are clearly disruptive and you are not assuming good faith in order to help promoting such an important article to FA. First of all, if you'd consult my userpage and my edits you will see that i'm not at all pro-US, actually I was even accused few times of being pro-Soviet/Russian. As you said, an editor involved in copyediting cannot vote in this FAC. So, please assume good faith, and consider withdrawing your comments and let us try to resolve these problems in a constructive way. Here's my proposal: you can make a new version of the sections which are POV in your opinion, and after that, I will send them to User:Twelsht for a thorough copy-edit. After this, I will add myself the new versions to the article. A positive answer behalf of you would mean very much to me, as i'm working hardly on this article since June, and I really want to see it passing this FAC. My comments are not 'disruptive', they support an oppose vote. That is part of the process. Since I considered myself to no longer be copyediting the article, I felt I was free to vote. I wrote it as I saw it, which is the most we can ask of any reviewer. As for assuming good faith, you criticised my content, then changed your mind, then criticised my style (which I found ironic because your edits introduced four errors) and then you criticised my organisation of a section by topics as "not FA style" instead of telling me what the convention in the article is. It is quite common for articles to be organised by topics, rather than chronologically. At that point I stopped assuming anything. As for withdrawing my comments, I have marked them as 'Under review' on the FAC, to minimise the chance that they will be disruptive, but I will not withdraw my vote: I do not believe that this article should be featured at this stage - it is fatally flawed and the fact remains that other Wikiprojects rate it as B-class. I need to get some distance before working on the article further. I don't think that the required edits can be completed before the FAC concludes - this was why I was so confused when you ignored the work I had posted in the discussion and started the FAC in the first place. You understand that this puts me in an uncomfortable position: I do not believe this article should be featured as-is, but I cannot work on it without removing my vote. Two days left on FAC? I don't have a problem with that - many of my featured proposals have been opposed, ultimately resulting in higher quality standards. As you know, that's the nature of WP. Graphics help

Hey there! I was wondering if you could help me with a vector image that I am working on, seeing as you are very good on working with vector images. I am currently trying to promote it to a FP, but there is one part of it that I could use help with. The image is Image:Dynamite-3.svg; the part I need help with is with where the paper would fold over on the ends (I know the shadows not done and other things, but this part is really bothering me!). Hi Pbroks, thanks for the compliment. Mainly it's just persistence. You are quite right that detail like this will either make or break an FPC so it's worth the effort.

1. For the ends I suggest cutting an ellipse into 6th's and adding some crease shadows and highlights - which you do well. Once you have the segments you could add a few extra nodes for some organic wavyness. See Image:Dynamite-4.svg to get the idea. Sorry, it's a bit of a mess - I forgot to delete hidden layers.
2. Remember that the end cap of an object in perspective is not a circle, or a vertical ellipse. Dynamite-4 looks 'wrong' because I slightly over-emphasised the perspective, but you get the idea.
3. I recommend also adding a 'rim' highlight to the top left corner edge of the fold-over to emphasise the fold. See Image:Crystal energy.svg on the plug as an example of a very obvious rim highlight.
4. I think that the edge of the cut-away should be red. This is kind of a convention that may make it easier for people to interpret. Also, the vertical interior of the cut-away could be a copy of your other (very nice) texture, maybe a bit darker - a shadow looks a bit wrong to me because the interior texture looks like it carries on under the shadow.

Hope this helps, I'm sorry I can't help more but I have work I'm avoiding, so back to the grind-stone. If you need anything else, please give me a shout and if you'd like me to 'peer-review' the image before FPC, I'll be more than happy too, but I may only be on every couple of days. I just still feel stuck. I'm trying to get it to look folded over, but its hard, especially when truing to keep it look realistically and not so geometrically. On top of that, I cant find good colors to fit. I updated what (little) I have at Image:Dynamite-3.svg, and, honestly, I could really use some more help. I strongly encourage learning how to retouch pictures but I wouldn't put good odds on getting Featured pictures unless your source images are spectacular - better than almost all of the tank images I've seen. The guys over at WP:FPC are so harsh I stopped proposing images or visiting. BTW, if you really want to get FPs, make vector diagrams. Anyway, you want to learn to retouch images? I learned to retouch by playing with Photoshop and more recently GIMP (GIMP is just as good for me) and reading online tutorials. There's a ton of stuff out there, but I'm not a retouching expert. User:Durova, now there's an image retouching expert - and she's very nice to work with, but quite busy. Why don't you propose a few images for restoration at the Graphics Lab, see how others do it and try to replicate the result they get and ask them how they did it if you get stuck. That's one good way to learn by doing and you get retouched images at the same time. I'm not always on WP these days but I'd be happy to do this with you if you like. No problem, I did this for the teapot in POV-ray, but it's not featured pic quality. What I'd really like to see is some top quality renders that we can get promoted to featured pic status so we can encourage 3D illustrators to contribute to WP. It's actually a modification of the Utah teapot to make it more realistic in geometry. Perhaps I could so something like that only with the original model and some more contrast with the background? Abrams image suggestion

Hey, congratulations. I just happened to look at the main page with your image on it. It is top notch, and I hope you don't take it as criticism if I make a suggestion, to file away in case you decide to do any more work on it. The open hatch-cover labelled “hatch or cupola” is a bit imprecise, and might be confusing for some readers.

You may consider enlarging the hatch ring a bit, adding the periscopes, and labelling it “commander's cupola,” or “commander's all-round vision cupola” if there's room. Maybe the “commander's hatch” would be clearer if it were shown closed, or tilted a bit further open, and the “loader's hatch” added for completeness. I've found a few images which may serve you as a visual reference: #1, #2, #3.

Hi Mila. For simple brightness and contrast I recommend Virtualdub. I wrote a custom script for video stabilization for you because that functionality is not available in a free (maybe not even in a commercial) video package. Thanks for your comments! It is a relief to see that the map is useful, as I am perennially displeased with my map efforts (I can't seem to get Inkscape to do exactly what I want, or to display svg files the same way as thumbnails as in full view...). I thought about adding troop movements to the map, but the exact course armies followed is totally unclear, and I preferred to leave it be. Perhaps I will draw up a smaller map summarizing the war. Since you liked the map, could I also bother you to drop a support vote in the A-class process? Unless of course you have other comments or suggestions. Me thinks you can help with this: at Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/ICBM diagram I had attempted to get a .svg shot of an ICBM with MIRV warheads up to FP status, but the nom was suspended and then closed before anyone had a chance to address the issues. Hi TomStar. I agree that the MIRV image should make it FA given some modifications for content and style. Unfortunately work and home commitments keep me away from the Wiki more than I would like. I already did a peer review. I want to take the article to the next step towards FA. Right now I'm not sure if the article makes FA class. With your help I'm certain criterion 1(a) will be fulfilled, but I believe some users will voice concerns on a lack of reference. (I'm relying on only two secondary sources, and a third primary source backed where possible by the other two) My idea is that a GA will help me on the road to FA. What matters to me most is which would help me more on my way to FAC: An A-class review, or GAN? Obviously an A-class review would involve MilHist contributors, which would be very helpful. I'd do them both but this is discouraged it seems. What do you think? Don't let my commentary derail Dana's efforts on the WWI article, I've just got one nerve left and this is why I probably am never going to ever, ever, ever bother putting any of the articles I lead the work on up for FAC because there are just too many egos that dive in. (not saying you are an "ego", but too many reviewers are -- and the rest seem to be disgruntled grad students with no life and I'm sick of them). I'm fond of accuracy, but I am just totally sick of the MiliHist WP politics and was utterly fed up during the A-class review with the way that someone would launch into the need for an entire dissertation on the evolution of the bullet or some equally irrelevant thing. Dana was the goddess of patience to put up with that. Nothing irritates me more than people who complain without offering solutions, and especially those who complain when they don't even know what they are talking about. That's probably why I dove in, I thought you were one of those people. Looks like you aren't, so if I was offensive, sorry. Montanabw^(talk) 21:00, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

Sounds like a case of mistaken identity! (i.e. you were mistaken for the gamers...oh dear) It does take people some time to get to know who the respected folks are. and I know that I am often guilty of diving into an area where I do have expertise but people don't necessarily understand that I have expertise... especially when I am disagreeing with their (incorrect) contentions! GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive Wrap-up

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated in the drive! Over 100 editors—including Jimbo Wales—signed up this time (nearly triple the participants of the May drive). This benefited the Guild as well as the articles in need of copy editing. You can see from the comparison graphs that we increased the number of completed copyedits substantially. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet our goal of completely wiping out 2008 from the queue. We also were not able to reduce the backlog to less than 6,000 articles. We suspect people were busy with real life summertime things, at least in the northern hemisphere! We were able to remove the months of January, February, March, April, and May from the backlog, and we almost wiped out the month of June. We reduced the backlog by 1,289 articles (17%), so all in all it was a very successful drive, and we will be holding another event soon. We'll come up with some new ideas to try to keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, everybody! Stats If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you edited in the May 2010 GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive, your word totals are cumulative for barnstars (not the leaderboard). Over the course of the next week or two, we will be handing out the barnstars. GOCE backlog elimination drive chart up to 31 July Eight people will receive The Most Excellent Order of the Caretaker's Barnstar (100,000+ words): Chaosdruid, Diannaa, Ericleb01, Lfstevens, Shimeru, S Masters, The Utahraptor, and Torchiest. November 2010 backlog elimination drive update

GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs We have reached the midway point in our backlog elimination drive, so here is an update. Participation report — The November drive has 53 participants at this point. We had 77 participants in the September drive. In July, 95 people signed up for the drive, and in May we had 36. If you are not participating, it is not too late to join! Progress report — The drive is quite successful so far, as we have already almost reached our target of a 10% reduction in the number of articles in the backlog. We are doing very well at keeping our Requests page clear, as those articles count double for word count for this drive. Please keep in mind the possibility of removing other tags when you are finished with an article. If the article no longer needs {{cleanup}}, {{wikify}}, or other similar maintenance tags, please remove them, as this will make the tasks of other WikiProjects easier to complete. November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive Conclusion

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive! We have reached the end of our fourth backlog elimination drive. Thanks to all who participated. Stats GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive graphs 58 people signed up for this drive. Of these, 48 people participated in the drive. Although we did not eliminate the months we planned to (January, February, and March 2009; and August, September, and October 2010), we did reduce the backlog by 627 articles (11.2%), which was over our goal of 10%. 49 awards will go out to 33 of 48 participants. Check out the complete list of barnstar winners here. Barnstars If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you participated in the September 2010 backlog elimination drive, you may have earned roll-over words (more details can be found here). These roll-over words count as credit towards earning barnstars, except for leaderboard awards. We will be delivering these barnstars within the next couple of weeks. Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 backlog elimination drive Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! The drive is halfway over, so here are some mid-drive stats. Participation GOCE January 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs So far, 43 people have signed up for this drive. Of these, 25 have participated. If you signed up for the drive but haven't participated yet, it's not too late! Try to copy edit at least a few articles. Remember, if you have rollover words from the last drive, you will lose them if you do not participate in this drive. If you haven't signed up for the drive yet, you can sign up now. Progress report We have eliminated two months from the backlog – January and February 2009. One of our goals is to eliminate as many months as possible from the 2009 backlog. Please help us reduce the size of this part of the backlog if you haven't already. Another goal is to reduce the entire backlog by 10%, or by 515 articles. Currently, we have eliminated 375 articles from the queue, so if each participant copy edits four more articles, we will reach that goal. Thank you for participating in the January 2011 drive. GOCE January Backlog elimination drive conclusion

Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive Greetings from the January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! We have reached the end of the month and the end of another successful drive; thanks to all who participated. Statistics 54 people signed up for the year's first Backlog elimination drive. Of these, 40 participated. One of our goals was to reduce the size of the backlog by at least 10%. We managed to reduce the backlog by 633 articles, or about 12%. Another goal was to eliminate as many 2009 months as possible from the queue. We eliminated January, February, March, and April—4 out of 12 months is not bad! In addition, we eliminated 37% of all remaining 2009 articles from the queue. Chaosdruid copy edited Kutch Gurjar Kashtriya for 32,711 words, which is the largest single article completed in one of our drives so far. This article counts as six 5000-K articles, and Chaosdruid wins the "most 5000-K articles" leaderboard category. Way to go! A complete list of individual results is here. Barnstars If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you participated in the November 2010 Backlog elimination drive, you may have earned roll-over words (more details can be found here). The Guild of Copy Editors – May 2011 Backlog Elimination Drive The Guild of Copy Editors invite you to participate in the May 2011 Backlog Elimination Drive, a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy-editing. GOCE drive invitation

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors The latest GOCE backlog elimination drive is under way! It began on 1 July and so far 18 people have signed up to help us reduce the number of articles in need of copyediting. This drive will give a 50% bonus for articles edited from the GOCE requests page. Although we have cleared the backlog of 2009 articles there are still 3,935 articles needing copyediting and any help, no matter how small, would be appreciated. We are appealing to all GOCE members, and any other editors who wish to participate, to come and help us reduce the number of articles needing copyediting, as well as the backlog of requests. If you have not signed up yet, why not take a look at the current signatories and help us by adding your name and copyediting a few articles. Here's the mid-drive newsletter. Participation: We have had 58 people sign up for this drive so far, which compares favorably with our last drive, and 27 have copy-edited at least one article. If you have signed up but have not yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us! Progress report: Our target of completing the 2010 articles has almost been reached, with only 56 remaining of the 194 we had at the start of the drive. The last ones are always the most difficult, so thank you if you are able to help copy-edit any of the remaining articles. We have reduced the total backlog by 163 articles so far. Special thanks: Special thanks to Stfg, who has been going through the backlog and doing some preliminary vetting of the articles—removing copyright violations, doing initial clean-up, and nominating some for deletion. This is the most successful drive we have had for quite a while. Here is your end-of-drive wrap-up newsletter. Participation Of the 70 people who signed up for this drive, 40 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Special acknowledgement goes out to Lfstevens, who did over 200 articles, most of them in the last third of the drive, and topped all three leaderboard categories. You're a superstar! Stfg and others have been pre-checking the articles for quality and conformance to Wikipedia guidelines; some have been nominated for deletion or had some preliminary clean-up done to help make the copy-edit process more fun and appealing. Thanks to all who helped get those nasty last few articles out of the target months. Progress report During this drive we were successful in eliminating our target months—October, November, and December 2010—from the queue, and have now eliminated all the 2010 articles from our list. Minimisation

Thanks for your remark. The graph of error versus step size for verious methods is certainly interesting, but requires careful interpretation as the whole issue is complicated, indeed, floating-point arithmetic is maddeningly complicated in detail. I would have liked to see a description of the various factors, for instance, calculation in quadruple precision so as to be sure that the calculations of errors in double precision are accurate! If all calculations are in double precision, then since we're chasing the last possible bit of precision you have to worry over the calculations involving h (preferably interpreted in binary, so as not to be annoyed by binary-decimal issues: for instance, 10·15 is represented as 10·1499996185302734375 in single precision binary on the ibmpc et al, but 10·1500000000000003552713678800500929355621337890625 in double, which I noticed when printing a value to one decimal digit: 10·1 vs. 10·2), the precise calculation of the example function (and you should try a variety), and the precise calculation of the terms in the expression F(x) - F(x - h) etc. - all will mess with the precision of the result you are attempting to explore. Some compilers/systems enable calculation in 80-bit floating-point, the equivalent of REAL*10 as compared to REAL*8 for double and REAL*4 for single precision: if available, this would greatly ease the inspection of REAL*8 behaviour. REAL*16 for quadruple precision is rare, but some systems (Mathematica for one) allow specification of very high precision.

With regard to your mention of five-point stencil and minimisation, I'm not too clear on what you are attempting. By minimising, possibly you refer to minimising the error between the current (iterated) approximate solution on the actual solution of Laplace's equation across a grid of points, or similar. There is a large literature on this, and I have merely dabbled. In general terms, chasing a high-merit calculation at a grid point is probably not worth the effort, as the data at the adjacent positions are merely approximation to what they should be. Even so, there are plenty of many-point options (not just the four cartesian neighbours, but a larger disc) and associated formulae. I particularly note the existence of the four diagonal neighbours that, if the cartesian neighbours are one unit away, are sqrt(2) units away. Otherwise, they influence their central point only after a second iteration, amounting to being two units away. The overhead of incorporating them in an iteration's work is not great, but with still more points, it grows.

This problem can be attacked from the other direction: from the NxM grid of finite differences, generate a matrix of simultaneous equations of order NxM, and solve. Normally the labour would be great, but, this is a nearly diagonal matrix and can be solved easily (see Tridiagonal matrix and similar banded matrices) in effort of order NxM. Loosely speaking, about the same effort as iterating the finite-difference collection to a small tolerance, except that it gives near-exact results directly (that can then be polished with a few iterations).

Thus in general terms, if you are confronting an entirely new problem each time, then a simultaneous equations response might do well. If however the new problem is similar to a previous problem, then the previous problem's solution can be used as the starting point for the new problem's iteration, and convergence might be gratifying. GOCE July 2013 news report

Guild of Copy Editors July 2013 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter Participation: Out of 30 people who have signed up for this drive so far, 18 have participated. If you have signed up for the drive but have not yet participated, it isn't too late. If you haven't signed up for the drive, sign up now! Progress report: Thus far we have reduced the number of May/June 2012 articles to just 124 articles, so we're on the right track. Unfortunately, for the first time in GOCE history, the number of articles in the backlog has actually gone up during this drive. While all participants are currently doing a fine job, we just don't have as many of them as we have had in the past. We have over 500 editors on our mailing list, but only 18 editors who have done a copy edit for the drive. If you're receiving this newsletter, it's because you have an interest in copy editing. GOCE December 2013 Blitz wrap-up and January Drive invitation

December Notes from the Guild of Copy Editors The December blitz ran from December 8–14. The theme for this blitz was articles tied in some way to religion. Seven editors knocked out 20 articles over the course of the week. Our next blitz will be in February, with a theme to be determined. Feel free to make theme suggestions at the Guild talk page! The January 2014 Backlog elimination drive is a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on January 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on January 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goals are to copy edit all articles tagged in October and November 2012 and complete all requests placed before the end of 2013. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits at least one article, and special awards will be given to the top five in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", "Number of articles of over 5,000 words", "Number of articles tagged in October and November 2012", and "Longest article". December 2014 GOCE newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors December 2014 Newsletter Drive: Thanks to everyone who participated in November's Backlog Elimination Drive. Of the 43 people who signed up for this drive, 26 copy edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Progress report: The November Drive removed 26 requests from the Requests page and 509 articles from the {{copy edit}} backlog. We copy edited 83 articles tagged in the target months; July, August, and September 2013. Together with tag removals from articles unsuitable for copy editing, we eliminated July 2013 from the backlog and reduced August and September's tags to 61 and 70 respectively. As of 01:01, 1 December 2014 (UTC), the backlog stood at 1,974 articles, dipping below 2,000 for the first time in the Guild's history (see graph at right). Well done everyone! Blitz: The December Blitz will run from December 14–20 and will focus on articles related to Religion, in recognition of this month's religious holidays in much of the English-speaking world. June 2016 Guild of Copy Editors Newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors June 2016 News Hello everyone, welcome to the June 2016 GOCE newsletter. It's been a few months since we sent one out; we hope y'all haven't forgotten about the Guild! Your coordinators have been busy behind the scenes as usual, though real life has a habit of reducing our personal wiki-time. The May backlog reduction drive, the usual coordinating tasks and preparations for the June election are keeping us on our toes! May drive: Thanks to everyone who participated in last month's record-setting backlog reduction drive. Of the 29 people who signed up, 16 copyedited at least one article, 197 copyedits were recorded on the drive page, and the copyedit backlog fell below 1,500 for the first time! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. June Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz will occur from 12 June through 18 June; the themes will be video games and Asian geography. Coordinator elections: It's election time again; how quickly they seem to roll around! Nominations for the next tranche of Guild coordinators, who will serve a six-month term that begins at 00:01 UTC on 1 July and ends at 23:59 UTC on 31 December, opens at 00:01 UTC on 1 June and closes at 23:59 UTC on 15 June. June Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 12 through 18 June; the themes were video games and Asian geography. Of the 18 editors who signed up, 11 removed 47 articles from the backlog. Guild of Copy Editors September 2016 News Hello everyone, and welcome to the September 2016 GOCE newsletter. >>> Sign up for the September Drive, already in progress! <<< July Drive: The July drive was a roaring success. We set out to remove April, May, and June 2015 from our backlog (our 149 oldest articles), and by 23 July, we were done with those months. We added July 2015 (66 articles) and copy-edited 37 of those. We also handled all of the remaining Requests from June 2016. Well done! Overall, we recorded copy edits to 240 articles by 20 editors, reducing our total backlog to 13 months and 1,656 articles, the second-lowest month-end total ever. August Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 21 through 27 August; the theme was sports-related articles in honor of the 2016 Summer Olympics. Of the eight editors who signed up, five editors removed 11 articles from the backlog. A quiet blitz – everyone must be on vacation. Barnstars and rollover totals are located here. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Guild of Copy Editors December 2016 News Hello everyone, and welcome to the December 2016 GOCE newsletter. We had an October newsletter all set to go, but it looks like we never pushed the button to deliver it, so this one contains a few months of updates. We have been busy and successful! >>> Sign up for the December Blitz! <<< Coordinator elections for the first half of 2017: Nominations are open for election of Coordinators for the first half of 2017. Please visit the election page to nominate yourself or another editor, and then return after December 15 to vote. Thanks for participating! September Drive: The September drive was fruitful. We set out to remove July through October 2015 from our backlog (an ambitious 269 articles), and by the end of the month, we had cut that pile of oldest articles to just 83. We reduced our overall backlog by 97 articles, even with new copyedit tags being added to articles every day. We also handled 75% of the remaining Requests from August 2016. Overall, 19 editors recorded copy edits to 233 articles (over 378,000 words). October Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 16 through 22 October; the theme was Requests, since the backlog was getting a bit long. Of the 16 editors who signed up, 10 editors completed 29 requests. Barnstars and rollover totals are located here. Thanks to all editors who took part. November Drive: The November drive was a record-breaker! We set out to remove September through December 2015 from our backlog (239 articles), and by the end of the month, we had cut that pile of old articles to just 66, eliminating the two oldest months! We reduced our overall backlog by 523 articles, to a new record low of 1,414 articles, even with new tags being added to articles every day, which means we removed copy-editing tags from over 800 articles. We also handled all of the remaining Requests from October 2016. Officially, 14 editors recorded copy edits to 200 articles (over 312,000 words), but over 600 articles, usually quick fixes and short articles, were not recorded on the drive page. User group for Military Historians

Greetings,

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

• tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
• adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
• updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
• creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

April 2021 WikiProject Military History Reviewing Drive

Hey y'all, the April 2021 WikiProject Military History Reviewing Drive begins at 00:01 UTC on April 1, 2021 and runs through 23:59 UTC on April 31, 2021. Points can be earned through reviewing articles on the AutoCheck report, reviewing articles listed at WP:MILHIST/ASSESS, reviewing MILHIST-tagged articles at WP:GAN or WP:FAC, and reviewing articles submitted at WP:MILHIST/ACR. Service awards and barnstars are given for set points thresholds, and the top three finishers will receive further awards. To participate, sign up at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Military_History/April 2021 Reviewing Drive#Participants and create a worklist at Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/April 2021 Reviewing Drive/Worklists (examples are given). Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election are now open. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here.
