Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Coordinators/2015/2

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Overview[edit]

The project coordinators are responsible for maintaining the procedural and administrative aspects of the project. They are the designated points of contact for procedural issues and are responsible for ensuring that the project as a whole is properly informed of them.

To provide some examples of coordinator duties: the coordinators manage the proposal and creation of new task forces; ensure that project announcement and task lists are kept up-to-date; initiate drafting of guidelines needed by the project; organize the category system; oversee the recruitment of new members, including the use of project notices and other advertising methods; create and maintain collaborative projects if any; wearing the juice; maintain the project page and the various guidelines in it in a clean and easy-to-use state; monitor technical policies and ensure that project templates satisfy them; and assist in organizing and promoting any Backlog Elimination Drives.

They are also expected to generally assist project members with any questions or concerns.

The coordinator positions do not entail any executive power.

Positions[edit]

  • Lead Coordinator (one open position): will have overall responsibility for procedural and administrative matters within the project.
  • Assistant Coordinator (three open positions)[a]: will assist the Lead Coordinator by focusing on specific areas within the project that require special attention. These areas will be selected based on need and interest among the coordinators.
  1. ^ The three-coordinators guideline is not carved in stone; the Guild has previously had four at one time (the more-the-merrier principle).

Election process[edit]

  • The election process will run for two weeks from June 16, 00:01 UTC until June 30, 23:59 UTC.
  • Any member of the project may nominate themselves for either position by creating a new section under Nominations below and copying the sample form below. Nominees only interested in one position should indicate this when adding their names. Candidates need not make extensive statements if they do not wish to do so.
  • The elections will be conducted using simple approval voting. Any member of the project may support a nominee for either position. If the nominee is running for both positions and you wish to support them for only one, please make a note to that effect as part of your vote.
  • Both project members and interested outside parties are encouraged to ask questions of the nominees or to make general comments.

Jonesey95 (self-nomination)[edit]

Jonesey95 (talk · contribs) • Interested in Assistant (or Lead) Coordinator position.

I am willing to serve again. I do some copy editing, but mostly I work in the background to keep the machine oiled. I have recently (during the past seven months) created a template that makes barnstar awarding much easier ({{GOCE award}}) and refined templates created by Baffle gab1978 that make drive/blitz page creation easier.
The duties that I have assumed and am willing to continue performing include: watching and responding to talk page queries about copy editing; creating drive and blitz pages; updating drive and blitz pages at 00:00 UTC daily; scanning the monthly copy-edit maintenance subcategories to ensure that tagged articles really do need copy editing; and awarding barnstars.
If we don't have anyone willing to be the Lead, I would consider it. Fair warning: I will be completely off-wiki for the month of July 2015.

KieranTribe (self-nomination)[edit]

KieranTribe (talk · contribs) • Interested in Assistant Coordinator position.

I'd like to help out more with the maintenance side of the project - I do copy edit but only a little. In terms of my activity, I'm going to be around for most of the time, except the occasional week here or there (probably not for most of August, actually) but I'll leave notice. I'm unwilling to be lead coordinator, and the project's looking fine as it is anyway, I'd rather not intrude on the main side of things. In terms of my being reasonably new to wikipedia, I've been editing from various ips for the past few months but only recently got an account.
In terms of duties I'd like to assume, I'm happy to do everything, though I'll lean more toward fixing up the project pages etc. and maintenance stuff. I can do everything except the total updates - I can't be around at midnight. Thanks!

Questions from Baffle gab1978
  1. Hello @KieranTribe:, welcome to the Guild. I'm pleased to see someone so new to Wikipedia who's willing to help out with coordinating the project. I'm an ex-coordinator btw, so I know the ground; most Guild work is mundane things like giving out barnstars, archiving Requests, updating Drive/Blitz stats etc. It can be time-consuming and boring at times. Do you think you're likely to remain interested in coordinating the Guild for six months? Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 00:48, 6 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the question @Baffle gab1978:. Honestly, mundane maintenance tasks interest me (for some reason), and that's where I'm happy to help out mostly. At this moment I hope I'll be able to, and think I should - unless something happens in real life there's no reason for that to change. KieranTribe (talk) 15:59, 6 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Miniapolis[edit]

Miniapolis (talk · contribs) • Interested in Assistant position.

I'm happy to see KieranTribe step forward (since we need new blood), and that Jonesey95 has expressed an interest in returning to the lead-coordinator position. I've never made a secret of the fact that although a project of this scope certainly requires coordination, I feel I can pitch in best as a day-to-day copyeditor (especially of request-page articles) and would be more than happy to step aside as lead. However, if Jonesey changes their mind I'm willing to continue as lead coordinator.

Baffle gab1978 (self-nomination)[edit]

Baffle gab1978 • Interested in Assistant position.

I'm an ex-coordinator who served three terms from July 2013, during which I've written several time-saving templates for coordinators and regular copy-editors to use. During my last term, I helped clean up, copy-edit and partially rewrite many of the Guild's pages—including the home and Requests pages. I'm also a regular copy-editor. I have no major plans this time, though I think the archiving of some Guild talk pages needs fixing / merging / consolidating. I'm not as active on-wiki as I was previously because I'm busy doing RL things (life's too short to spend all day in front of a computer), but I'll be around to help with the mundane things like running Drives and Blitzes, writing newsletters and managing the Requests page. I'll probably be more active torwards the end of the term. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 22:51, 7 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Pax85 (self-nomination)[edit]

Pax85 (talk · contribs) • Interested in Assistant position only.

I seem to be back in a place where I can devote more time to Wiki, and since copy-editing was always one of my areas of interest (I am an editor and writing assistant in RL), I figured I would throw my hat into the ring. While I do realize that my level of activity may be cause for concern, I do see myself being fairly active on the site from here on out. In regards to the position itself, I would like to help on the maintenance side of things, supporting those many editors who silently work in the background to make this a first-rate encyclopedia. -Pax85 (talk) 06:40, 9 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Comments and questions[edit]

Questions from Baffle gab1978 (talk · contribs)
  1. Hello @Pax85:; thank you for standing for election as a GOCE coordinator. I see you've been a prolific copy-editor in the past, which I think will be beneficial experience. There's been a few changes in the way the Guild (and the wider Wikipedia) operates since 2012; if you haven't done so already I suggest taking a look around some of our pages. Anyway, welcome back; it's always good to see experienced editors returning.
As I said to Kieran above, much of the coordinators' work consists of mundane maintenence tasks like updating Drive/Blitz pages, archiving requests etc. I'll ask you the same question: do you think you're likely to remain interested in coordinating the Guild during the six-month term? Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 02:28, 11 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Baffle gab1978:, and thank you for the question. I have been re-familiarizing myself with the GOCE and other areas since returning, and I am happy to be back. In regards to your question, while I obviously can't predict the future, I can say what I reasonably suspect and what I plan on doing over the time that I am an assistant coordinator, if elected. One of the main reasons why I left Wiki is burnout, so i have already implemented a personal philosophy of a certain amount of time and number of edits each day. Sometimes I may go over, sometimes I may go under, but I think with the new balance, I am very unlikely to to leave or lose again; I realize my history is cause for concern in the coordinator elections. As far as the work itself, the maintenance of the encyclopedia is what entices me the most. GOCE, AFC, and AFD have always been fun places to hang out, since I get to help others in the process of doing the hard work, which is writing the articles themselves. I may make major contributions of my own to articles from time to time, but I am content to hang out in the background to make sure things run smoothly, as much as one editor among thousands can accomplish that task anyway! Finally, I think by the beginning of the new term, I will have been able to get acquainted with everything well-enough, and will of course be able to gain some excellent insight from the other coordinators as well. Again, thanks for the question!
