Merger proposal[edit]

I would suggest that Ammerham (which has until recently wrongly been described as being in Dorset) should be merged into this article (as it is in the parish of Winsham) as it is unlikely to be notable enough (shown by lack of reliable sources) to have its own article.— Rod talk 22:12, 1 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. (although maybe it's notable in being able to hop over county boundaries hahaha....) PaleCloudedWhite (talk) 22:22, 1 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There are lots of hamlets, villages and even parishes which have moved from one county to another over the years - a whole chunk of the Somerset/Wiltshire border villages have been down this path, so Ammerham may have done that in the past (or it could just be an error by whoever created the article).— Rod talk 22:31, 1 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think it was most probably an error. Actually, although I joked about crossing boundaries, that is in my view sometimes worthy of comment, and maybe (if it is true) makes a settlement sufficiently notable to have its own article. Sometimes settlements don't even have to have been near a border. For example, Holwell in Dorset was once part of Somerset. To quote the late Dorset broadcaster Ralph Wightman, "This 'Somerset detached' arrangement was once fairly common. Apparently if a great nobleman had one manor, remote from his main estate in another county, he might elect to pay his taxes at his principal seat. In this case the distant manor became part of his chosen county." (Portait of Dorset, p140) In the case of the Dorset village of Ryme Intrinseca, the name of the village itself is thought to reference this sort of practice, as 'intrinsica' means 'inside', in opposition to 'Ryme Extrinseca' which would confer the same 'detached' status as Holwell once had.... One village I know in Hampshire called Bramshaw at one time apparently had the county boundary passing right through the church - the vicar would conduct his services in Hampshire, and the parishioners would sit in Wiltshire! Anyhoo, I agree with the proposal to merge Ammerham into Winsham. The only thing I can find notable about Ammerham is that it once had a watermill there, but I can't find any information on it. I have now done the merge. I can't find any evidence it has "hopped county boundaries" but if anyone can then a short comment saying this could be added.— Rod talk 11:07, 26 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Winsham in Kingsbury Hundred[edit]

Winsham should be in Kingsbury Hundred. I discovered another parish further up the alphabet listed in Kilmersdon Hundred in error yesterday. They are both in the right place on the GENUKI page the information came from. --Oldontarian (talk) 11:33, 19 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
