Hello Pasicles. Do you know if the recent edit which changed the dial code of the above article is correct or not? I ask because that IP editor has previously added some slightly outlandish and unreferenced claims to that article (which I reverted), and because it was you who originally inserted the infobox. Hiya, yes I think the edit is correct. Because of the difficulty in searching for this particular placename, I must have used the dial code of nearby Horton. Jolly good. Some nice images there. As you will see from the current image, it's nearly four years since I visited. Oh I see. Yes I guess access has changed - I deleted the sentences you wrote because they seemed much more complicated than when I visited. We just parked near the entrance to the field, and simply walked up the side of the field straight to the barrow. There was no "grass track", no "gap in the hedge" I had to dive through, and no switching to an "adjoining field". It was admittedly January when I visited, but there wasn't even much of a hedge. Fair enough. When I was there it was unclear that any public footpath existed from the road to the barrow, so one had to assume that people wouild just respect the fact they were crossing private land. I suspect the reason why it is currently easier to access the site is because English Heritage spent much of 2011 on reconstruction and reinforcement work there. I guess they didn't have heavy machinery back in the Stone Age either. :) Pasicles (talk) 00:57, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

History of Christchurch, Dorset

Hello Pasicles, Thanks for your contribution to the above article. You probably didn't notice but there is a short paragraph about the Saxon graveyard in the archaeology section. I have no qualms if you wish to leave your edit as it is, but you may want to consider amalgamating the two, especially as there is now some contradiction (I have it that there were 34 graves). Oh I see, I was puzzled why the famous Saxon graveyard didn't seem to be mentioned. I guess I just wasn't that interested in 20th-century Christchurch to read that far down. :) Given the importance of this excavation it probably should be mentioned in the "Saxon period" section, since it's a rare insight into the very earliest Saxon period in east Dorset. Oh you're right about the 34 graves (or more accurately 30 graves and 4 cremations), the "as many as forty" figure I used is probably just an initial 1977 estimate. Blue John

Hi there. I didn't deliberately remove the picture you added to Derbyshire Blue John - rather, we had an edit conflict and I got confused. I was editing the article at the same time as you, for the same reason (to add a photo of a Blue John bowl, as requested by some feedback on the article). I considered the picture of the Castleton bowl (and experimented with putting it in and previewing it a few times), but in the end decided the Chatsworth photo looked better; then when I saved the article I saw the Castleton picture had appeared and assumed I'd left it in by mistake (normally Wikipedia flags an edit conflict, but it didn't seem to here, hence my confusion). Feel free to put the picture back; I don't feel strongly, but I don't think we need two pictures of similar bowls, and I wonder such a picture belongs better in the "Use" section, where I put my picture, rather than at the top. Kemp Howe

Hi, Pasicles, I'm thinking that your merging of the various stubs (Goggleby, Thunderstone, etc. ) into one page was a very good idea as they seem to form parts of one megalithic complex. However, looking at the relevant sources (eg: Barrowclough, Clare) I'm pretty sure that Kemp Howe isn't used as the name of the complex (although it may have been the terminus for the Southern Shap Avenue set of stones). Burl and Clare seem to think that Skellaw Hill was the focus of the avenues of stones. (Clare doesn't even name Kemp Howe, he just lumps everything under "Shap"). Barrowclough calls the whole thing the "Shap Complex", which starts in the north at the Thunderstone and ends up at the Kemp Howe circle in the south. We could call the page the "Shap Complex" or maybe the "Shap Avenue complex". Neither is very satisfactory, but I prefer the second as the "Shap Complex" sounds like a psychological condition. Hell Stone, Portesham

Hello Pasicles. I notice you've changed the wording in the Portesham article so that the Hell Stone "may have been used as a resting place for people awaiting burial in the nearby Valley of The Stones", as opposed to the previous "men awaiting burial". The source for the original statement states that the Hell Stone "is said to have been the resting place of famous men awaiting burial, perhaps in 'The Valley of the Stones'". Hi PaleCloudedWhite. No I don't have a different source - but if the source used ("West Dorset Holiday and Tourist Guide") does say that then it seems a pretty wild bit of conjecture. According to the archaeology textbooks almost nothing is known about the Hell Stone because its so badly damaged - as far as I know, not one bone has ever been found there and there is no reason whatsoever to suppose that it was "the resting place of famous men awaiting burial". When other Neolithic tombs have been excavated elsewhere in Britain it has been shown that they were used as communal tombs with bones of men, woman and children, see: this link for some examples. I can't think of any reason why the 1983 West Dorset Holiday and Tourist Guide is likely to be correct about this. Oh, and I would also suggest that a guidebook from 1983 is likely to unthinkingly use sexist nouns and pronouns. No, I'll leave it as it is. I've never considered it to be a watertight source (though it is perhaps better than it seems from its title, at least for general info, as it was produced by a local authority rather than a commercial source, and much of the info it contains is corroborated by other sources). Just had to leave a quick note to say how much your work on the Hadrian's Wall milecastles is appreciated. I started the project in the hope that a few others would get involved, and we'd whistle through them at a rate of knots. That didn't happen, and I soon found that my level of enthusiasm dropped below the level of time I was prepared to devote. I logged on this morning after a short absence, and there were all your new articles. To say I was delighted would be an understatement. Hi Sammy_r, thanks for your message, I wondered if you would notice. :) I don't blame you for getting disillusioned by the lack of help in creating your pages -- huge swathes of Wikipedia just seem to be completely abandoned these days: if you look on Talk pages you see lots of conversations taking places in 2007/8 and then they just dry up! As for me, I got involved in the milecastles, because I was curious about the Cumbrian Coast defences: they are vaguely mentioned in lots of sources, but they are never properly described, they seem to be the hidden secret of Hadrian's Wall! I thought I had better get some of those central milecastles done while I was at it. I have only, of course, summarised what Pastscape says: it can be quite a patchy resource at times, but it seems to have worked well so far. Thanks a lot. I was motivated to create a few pages on brochs because I noticed that the 3 brochs I've personally visited - Dun Beag, Dun Telve, and Dun Troddan - didn't have pages on Wikipedia, despite the fact that they're three of the best remaining brochs in Scotland. Anyway, I'm just randomly adding a few more pages on the better-preserved brochs. I shall take a look at the Oldest buildings in Scotland list if I add any more pages to see if I should add links. Hi Prokaryotes. No there isn't an appropriate page-link for Dicaearchus father. It was I think a common practice in ancient Greek biographies to give the name of the person's father, but most of the time the name is all we have. I'm pretty sure nothing is known about Dicaearchus father except his name. In fact very little seems to be known about Dicaearchus himself which is why we've only got a couple of biographical sentences about the fellow. FWIW Archimedes's father was also called Phidias. 1982 World Rubik's Cube Championship

Hello, you changed some names in the article above, although those changes are not supported by the source. Do you have another source for that? Both the jaapsch.net source and the WCA-Website say "Ken'ichi", both say "Jerome". Jaap says "Ronald Brinkmann", WCA says Roland. Hi, yes I can get more references for this. The WCA database is clearly incorrect for a lot of these names. Mostly it's just a problem with accents. "Ken'ichi" and "Kenichi" are both correct -I guess I can change that back - the name is usually transliterated without that middle stop these days but it doesn't really matter. As for Jérôme - that's the correct French spelling for this name, but I'll try and find a source for him which correctly uses those accents. As for Roland/Ronald - that's the most serious error in the WCA database - 1980s sources use "Ronald". The other clear spelling mistake is the Polish surname Serbeński - incorrectly spelled Sebenski by the WCA. No, if I recall correctly there is nothing known about those three milefortlets or their associated turrets. I made the milefortlet pages by pulling information from PastScape and the National Heritage List for England, but there was no information I could use. I think it is possible that 18 and 19 have disappeared into the sea, whereas 24 is lost under Maryport somewhere. Pasicles (talk) 20:43, 10 April 2020 (UTC)
