Humoristic

Well, whoever put the word humoristic into the article then removed editing rights was obviously having a laugh. Now let's see, shall we use the word humorous ( 28,000,000 hits with a google search, or the strange sounding "humoristic" ( 110,000 hits with a goodle search )?

Humoristic obviously. Why use a word which sits easily in most people's minds when there is a more obscure awkward sounding version to confuse issues.

Just my observation. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.187.233.172 (talk) 10:46, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

Katy Hudson

The information regarding her first label is incorrect. Katy was signed by Todd Randall who was the AR Vice President at Red Hill Records. Since Katy Perry is the same person who recorded Christian pop-rock as Katy Hudson, the discography needs to be updated with her Christian albums, such as Katy Hudson (album) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.197.236.103 (talk) 04:53, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

Musical influences

Only two of the musical influences have proper citations. The rest do not and quite frankly make no damn sense. If you are going to say that a pop artist was influenced by death metal bands like Meshuggah, Cattle Decapitation, and Slayer, you should have a reference. Would an admin please flag this?

Please sign your posts on talk pages per Wikipedia:Sign your posts on talk pages. Thanks! Feel free to Be bold and flag it yourself. Hyacinth (talk) 23:26, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

Hyacinth, thanks for deleting the uncited influences. I would have been very surprised if Katy Perry were influenced by John Cage. Her music (from what I've heard) contains no elements of aleatory, Zen Buddhist philosophy, or indeterminacy. Death metal bands and prog acts like King Crimson were also unlikely.

That said, if anyone does find citations, I'd very much like to see them.Ilike1954rcamodels (talk) 06:54, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Name change

Although it certainly is commonplace for a woman to change one's last name when married, it is not commonplace for a woman who has previously released works under her birth name (Katy Hudson) to then change her name and release another work/album under her new name (Katy Perry). I assume she got married in the interim? This should be clarified on the page somehow, as many readers are probably wondering just why Katy Perry released an album named Katy Hudson. Midtempo-abg (talk) 00:08, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

It is more commonplace in certain professions including performers but indeed, it should be explained. Hyacinth (talk) 02:21, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Hudson is certainly her born, maiden name; that much we know and it says so in the first sentence of this article. Then we need to know where she got the name Perry? I did some searching on media articles posted on the web and nowhere is it mentioned that she is married or divorced. The few media sources (such as [1]) that have mentioned her change of name state that the reason is unknown and that there is only conjecture at this point - such as a change in name that went along with the change in her image, plus avoiding confusion with the American actress Kate Hudson. Does anyone know or find any sources that explain her last name change? Midtempo-abg (talk) 20:39, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
Katy has never married. Hudson is her real surname, Perry is her mother's maiden name. Katy changed her name in order to avoid confusion with actress Kate Hudson. She released her first album as Katy Hudson, at which time she was nowhere near as well known as she is now; the actress was not as famous as she is now either. Does anyone know if she has legally changed her name? F W Nietzsche (talk) 00:20, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

A warning is not a punishment. You shouldn't expect a thanks or congrats for edits such as the following: [2]. Hyacinth (talk) 04:03, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
A warning is only a forestep to proper punishment user 64.209.128.132 - i.e. bannings. You get so many warnings depending on the crimes and then wollop - bans. Mabuska (talk) 13:16, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
Hopefully you have a better understanding of the English Wikipedia than you do of English. If you didn't just make this up: how many times would a user have to commit the offense in question before being banned? Hyacinth (talk) 17:11, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
Is that understanding English cheek directed towards me Hyacinth? If so hopefully you'll word things more understandably. A warning is not a punishment can be construed as meaning either: your telling user 64.209.128.132 that he was wrong in judging a warning as a punishment, or that you are stating that a warning isn't suffice enough for a punishment. If not then no worries. And to answer your question; depends on the severity and frequency. The addition of Category:FBI Most Wanted Terrorists rates simply as a unconstructive and nuisance edit that Wikipedia provides minor warnings for. There are FAR more serious crimes committed by others that have more serious warnings and punishments for. If this user commits more such petty nuisence edits especially repeating the same ones, then of course he will get more severe warnings that will warn him that anymore and wham bam they get a ban. Or if they commit a spate of very offensive edits then they may get a ban straight off. Mabuska (talk) 22:04, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

I do not think she is because her song I KISSED A GIRL doesn't mean anithing. (Twilight578 (talk) 14:15, 17 April 2009 (UTC))

I added back the examples of the homophobic and misandric lyrics

I got a message from something telling me that adding in examples of homophobic and misandric lyrics were somehow not relevant to a section that discusses how critics have charged her lyrics as being homophobic and misandric.

I truly don't understand that criticism of my change, but feel free to discuss it here.

OK. You're taking her - and yourself - way too seriously. That lyric is from Ur So Gay and it's a fun song and that's it. How old are you? 12? You type like a moron, that's for sure. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.227.114.140 (talk) 21:54, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Her lyric, "You pull ‘em down and there’s really nothing there" is a lyric that says when her boyfriend acts "emo" it is as though he pulls his pants down and reveals having no penis. This is an example of the kind of lyrics that critics claim are homophobic and misandric. Having no penis, having a small penis, a man acting as having no penis is a woman, see, that is what critics of hers are calling homophobic.

So I don't know why that edit was reverted and I was told, "as it appears to be unconstructive." It's entire constructive. It gives an example to the reader of exactly why her lyrics are being charged as homophobic.

I also took out the [citation needed] tag. The person that wrote this wrote this. It is his opinion and it IS cited. If you disagree with his opinion, you should either a) remove his opinion or better, b) add in a reference from a person that disagrees with him and thinks such songs would be played. But I am not sure how much sense it makes to add [citation needed] after someone's opinion.

70.1.65.164 (talk) 04:23, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

How the hell is "You pull 'em down and there's really nothing there" a homophobic line?? If anything it only belittles her fella by saying he has no manhood to boost about. Whats homophobic about having a small penis or not even having one? Critics read far too much into a line thats just a simple dig at her boyfriend's penis size. Mabuska (talk) 14:09, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
Find a source to quote which agrees with you and you may quote it in the article. Until then, this page is for discussing the article and improvements to it, not for airing your opinions. Hyacinth (talk) 06:24, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
Please read WP:V - wikipedia does not publish analysis that has not been previously published by a reliable source. The sources in the article do not reference the lyrics that you are including. What is your suggestion for the article? Hyacinth (talk) 01:03, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

What is currently on this article and talk page don't show her as homophobic or misandric. I haven't heard or read all the lyrics of the song in question, but it sounds like it just refers to one ex-boyfriend of hers; that she didn't make any negative statements about men or LGBT people in general. If I'm wrong, please provide examples of some of the exact wording of the offending lyrics. F W Nietzsche (talk) 08:41, 26 December 2008 (UTC)

Lyrics

I added a quote from a Chicago Sun-Times columnist who sees positive aspects to the lyrics. Before, the only sources cited had negative opinions, so I thought that another opinion was appropriate.

Likewise the header for that section had been "Accusations of Homophobia and Mysandry" (I think), but I changed it to just "Lyrics" because I think it is more neutral. Could certainly change it to "Lyrical controversy" or something like that.

I thought that in addition to the negative and positive citations under "Lyrics" that it would be good to have a representation of the "who cares, it's just a song" point of view, which I suspect is the majority view of the public, but I couldn't find a source espousing that point.

Also, these lyrics get attacked by the Christian right, too, so it might be proper for someone to cite a Christian right critique of the lyrics, and add more positive citations to balance things out. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Uptownnow (talkcontribs) 13:11, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

Controversies: three-inch blade

So, why was this controversial? Holding a knife in a picture suddenly makes you controversial because it got put in a tabloid? My being a worthless American probably doesn't help me figure out what the real 'controversy' is here. Could somebody elaborate on it more than "holding knife in picture, picture gets posted in tabloid; she apologizes for holding a knife in a picture"? Washii (talk) 06:25, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

Obviously celebrities are held to a higher standard in Britain [3] Hell they're too civilized to even use knives there, their food cuts itself! Nar Matteru (talk) 17:31, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
Heh, thanks Nar. I noticed you pulled out the controversy in the article too. Washii (talk) 22:30, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
The picture made headlines in Britain (not just in tabloids, but please note that British tabloids are very different to American tabloids) and was subject of much debate. It was against the background of a shocking rise in knife-related deaths and an apparent glamourisation of knifes within popular culture. It was assumed that the photo of Ms Perry was an attempt to make her look edgy and "cool", which obviously poured fuel on the flames of the debate. To some it was offensive. To some it was not an issue. To most it was, at worst, a lapse in judgement by her pulicist. But to say it is un-noteworthy is simple untrue, when the same article cites other minor controversy regarding the word "gay" - which are completely irrelevant in the UK. Although Ms Perry is American, and therefore the stories surrounding her are likely to be Americo-centric, please recognise that she is an international star, and Wikipedia is an international medium, and there may be news stories that while seemingly irrelevant to American audiences are not to others. To many in the UK who do not follow music, they will only know Ms Perry by this particular photograph. 193.194.132.78 (talk) 10:55, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
That's partially because Europe is a lot more gay friendly while it is a much bigger issue here (the fuss wasn't about her use of the word itself). On the other hand we still have knife deaths same as you do and nobody here made a fuss. And if anyone in the UK remembers an American celebrity for posing in a picture with a knife five years from now, they really need more things in life to focus on.
And...Actually I think the gay stuff is equally as useless and would remove it if it weren't for the thousands of people who would readd it in an instant, with opinionated wording to make her out to be either A) a homophobe or B) somehow trying to make a statement supporting/opposing the gay/anti gay "agenda." And then there's Glenn Sacks who somehow twisted it to mean she hates men. Nar Matteru (talk) 12:45, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
Was it a storm in a teacup? Of course. As I mentioned, the majority of people would have looked at it and thought either: "so what?" or "silly publicist". Personally, I thought "so what?". But regardless of your opinion on the photograph, it was big news, did spark debate, and forms part of the general perception of Ms Perry in the public consciousness here; particularly for those who don't listen to her music, but see her in papers, magazines, etc. I'm not pushing for this to be readded. I was just suprised when I came to this article and saw no reference to it, given how big a furore it caused. I didn't realise it had been added, then deleted for being "un-noteworthy"!. I think I am just suggesting to the American editors of this article that the fact you don't know a piece of international information about Ms Perry (or think it is stupid) should not automatically invalidate it. 193.194.132.78 (talk) 13:42, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
Well, see, this is why I asked. The text in the article was basically "picture holding a knife," with no real context as to how it mattered to any particular geopolitical area. Thank you, oh mighty 192.194 IP! No, not sarcasm. Washii (talk) 06:16, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

Since Perry is only a stage name, and not a legally changed, name, shouldn't Hudson be used throughout the article? 74.69.119.32 (talk) 03:19, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

From MOS:BIO: "While the article title should generally be the name by which the subject is most commonly known, the subject's full name should be given in the lead paragraph, if known." I'd say she is better known as Katy Perry, so that is what should be used, and the lead starts with her legal name, as per MOS. --Terrillja talk 03:32, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
Agreed, the title of the article can be most commonly used name, but the rest of the article should use the legal name. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.69.119.32 (talk) 04:06, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
And then the title of the article will not match the rest of the article. With all due respect, that doesn't make any sense at all. That would be so incredibly confusing so everyone. The general consensus appears to be using stage name throughout, see Lil_wayne, Jay-Z, Slash (musician), and Pink_(singer) to name a few. One exception appears to be Sean Combs, who has gone by a half dozen different stage names, and using his legal name is much easier to understand.--Terrillja talk 04:20, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

"Contralto vocal range"

A little while ago, I took out the line about Perry having a "contralto vocal range," but I see someone has put it back in. I don't think this is a valid fact and it shouldn't be part of the article. The cited source is just some music critic who makes an offhand remark about her "raspy contralto vocals," but I doubt the writer meant "contralto" in the true sense of the word, just seems like a fancy way to say "low, compared to some other pop singers." So I'm taking it out again. Westknife (talk) 07:36, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

Any critical reader can tell that this source should not be trusted verbatim, and this particular sentence shouldn't be in the article, let alone in the first paragraph. Here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Reliable_sources Can someone else back me up here? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Westknife (talkcontribs) 09:03, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

Here is a better source: [4]. I'm putting that on the page instead of the old one. Please do not revert this one as well. Thanks. Tribal44 (talk) 17:08, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Tribal44
Thing is, Katy Perry is not a singer with professional/classical training (or at least she doesn't sound like it), and so these categories like contralto, soprano, etc. don't really apply. It seems misleading to say "Katy Perry has a contralto vocal range," because she probably could not sing a vocal part by a classical composer written for a contralto. Your new source is not much better than the old one, I'm afraid. From reading the article, it isn't obvious that the author has any reason to believe Perry is actually a contralto. Often words like this just get thrown around by journalists who don't know very much about music, like they'll just call a man with a high voice a "tenor" without truly knowing what that means. It looks like you are going to obstinately fight me on this, but at the very least it should not be featured in the first paragraph - is this really such an important fact about this person? When people think of Katy Perry, they don't think "Oh yeah, that singer with the contralto vocals." If it's so important to you, then rework it into the article in a more appropriate way. Until then I'm taking it out again. Westknife (talk) 18:24, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
I know she hasn't had any professional/classical training. But her voice does go as low. The newer reference does vaguely describe her range, and I'm reverting it once again.
Just because you don't think she's a contralto, doesn't mean you have to revert every reliable source there is on it. I do not want an edit war, but please do not revert it again. Tribal44 (talk) 18:32, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Tribal44

(undent) I have removed it for the time being. Until a reliable source is found which specifically addresses her vocal range, this information should remain out. If she is a contralto, then there should a reliable source somewhere saying so. FWIW, I don't know anything about vocal ranges, just don't want to see this edit war continue. --Terrillja talk 19:21, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

Here is another source on her vocals. Now this has to be reliable enough to be put back on the article. [5] Tribal44 (talk) 21:18, 7 February 2009 (UTC)Tribal44

I don't think you understand what a reliable source is. You can't just google "Katy Perry" and "contralto" and just use whatever comes up. This is an editorial review of a concert, and it is clearly an opinion piece rather than a journalistic one. Also, as I said before, the end of the first paragraph is the wrong place for this anyway. It is not one of the most essential facts about this person, despite your personal fixation on vocal ranges. Westknife (talk) 09:21, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
Well, if you are so gun-ho about finding a reliable source, then go find one yourself. I do type in the artists name and vocal range, and it does work.
As I said before, you do not want to admit she does a low vocal range. She is not a soprano or mezzo-soprano.
I'm not trying to pick any type of fight or be a "hard ass", lol. I'm really touchy about this subject because I love Katy Perry as much as you do.
Here are some sources I found while on my search today:

I've added a section on her vocal type. Its not much though. Tribal44 (talk) 21:30, 21 February 2009 (UTC)Tribal44

And I'm removing it per WP:UNDUE. A section about her vocal range? Unless she has had a pile of stories about her vocal range and how it is something that separates her from all other artists, it is undue. Even Whitney Houston doesn't have a vocal type section, and she's known for her voice, and has had many stories written about it. And her vocal type is already listed in the infobox.--Terrillja talk 21:44, 21 February 2009 (UTC)
What about the David Archuleta aritcle? It has a whole section on his, so why can't this article have one? Tribal44 (talk) 02:44, 22 February 2009 (UTC)Tribal44
Not anymore. If you find any others with a "vocal range/type" section, point them out to me on my talkpage. They are likely undue and the vocal type would be better suited to being added in the infobox.--Terrillja talk 03:15, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

Error in the information

In a TV interview that she did sometime in 2008, Katy Perry very clearly stated that she got her GED when she was fifteen years old and pursued her singing career. The article says that she graduated from high school at the age of eighteen, which is technically incorrect.

Fixed Thanks for the comment, the old ref said nothing about high school, and it appears she did get her GED. Corrected and referenced.--Terrillja talk 06:10, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

Name is confusing

The article's title is Katy Perry.

But the first words in the article are Katheryn Hudson.

Then the article keeps referring to her as Perry.

Her stage name is Katy Perry. Her stage name is not Perry.

Possible changes:

A. Refer to her as Hudson.

B. Refer to her as Katy Perry, not Perry.

I prefer B but think A is ok. Ipromise (talk) 03:51, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

B is fine. --Efe (talk) 09:45, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
People are usually referred to in Wikipedia articles by their surname. Katy Perry changed her surname part-way through her career from her real name to her mother's maiden name to avoid the public confusing her with a famous actress. In this article, should Katy be referred to as Hudson regarding events prior to her surname change, and as Perry regarding events since then? Nietzsche 2 (talk) 16:48, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
So if you read the top of the article, the flipped down to the bottom you would think you were reading about another person? I would not support this motion, based on how utterly confusing it would be for the casual reader. My opinion is one name, all the way through (other than the intro).--Terrillja talk 18:45, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

Katy Perry and saliva

Not the band. Actual spit. Katy Perry tends to not swallow her saliva when she's singing so she kind of slurs her words in the last verse with a slightly "gurgly" sound. However there are NO online articles noting that. But anyone who listens can hear it. She'll usually have that cute "gasp" expression during breaks in the song (or will do something else) that singers normally would take the time during to swallow their spit. I've watched her perform, it's not just sound effects either. Is there a way to put this on Wikipedia's article on her? Or is it original research? Or is it beyond that, an obscure observation that nobody else made? Or would the nature of this kind of comment look like vandalism no matter how true it is and how well written it is?

PS: This isn't a troll comment making a joke about her or anything. I actually think the "sound effects" from her having all that spit in her mouth sound cool. I just wonder if it can be worked into the article without looking like vandalism because that is an odd topic. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.72.221.246 (talk) 10:47, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Music and themes quote

The section music and themes contains the line

Perry described her music by saying, "Someone kind of penned it for me the other day, and I've been using it ever since."[5]'

While this quote is duly referenced it has bizarrely removed all meaning from the point.
In the quoted article Perry states "Someone said I was like a mixture of Lucille Ball and Freddie Mercury". Surely noting this and her rationale behind the comparison would be more useful than merely observing that someone else has described her style, without mentioning what they said.

"I have that Lucille Ball thing about me where everything looks really great on the outside, rocking that 1940s look, but on the inside there's just something just kind of wrong about me. The Freddie Mercury, which I pale in comparison to, obviously"

Parents

They are very anti-LGBT, and consequently strongly disapprove of her recent work, particularly I Kissed a Girl. Her mother claims Katy is strongly influenced by powerful people in the entertainment industry to (pretend to) be LGBT, when Katy, is, she claims, 'a good, innocent, straight, Christian girl who has been taken advantage of' by powerful people for their own ends. Regardless of how accurate or not her parents' opinion and view of the situation is, the fact that they feel that way is certainly relevant to Katy's life, and, as such, should be in the article. More about Katy Perry...

I think this Wikipedia article on Katy Perry could be more detailed... Could you include a little more on her moving story, as is mentioned for instance in the magazine PaperMag.com of this month? [9]

Perry and Ballard went on to work together for three years -- three very tumultuous years, during which Perry was signed to and then ultimately dropped by both Def Jam and Columbia Records. Three uncompleted albums and over 50 recorded songs later, Perry was starting to lose hope, and she was not even 23 yet. Fame had a way of dangling itself in front of her, only to be immediately snatched away. "I remember living in Beverly Hills," Perry says, "and having a new black Jetta, being very comfortable on my monthly stipend, and my cousin looked at me and said, 'Katy, this can go away,' and I was like, 'It's never going to go away!' And then it all went away. I remember that moment so clearly." There was another point, Perry remembers, "when I would write a check for my rent with fifteen dollars in my bank account and on the memo I would write, 'God, please help.' I would not recommend that anybody do that." During various bleak times during her early 20s, the only way Perry could buy new clothes was to sell her old ones at L.A. thrift store Wasteland. "I would tell people, you know, 'I'm going to have a record out,' but after three years, after being dropped by two labels, people were like, 'You're not going to have a record out, you're a liar and what do you really do?"

One thing Perry did was to go out a lot. "At one time in my life, it was almost a priority for me to be on the scene in L.A., but at a certain point, I was going out and not getting anything done the next day. We'd all go to Teddy's, and I couldn't believe how many lost people there were dancing the night away." For a glimpse into her party girl days, Perry points to her album's surprisingly moving power ballad "Lost" ("I'm out on my own again/ Face down in the porcelain/ Feeling so high but looking so low/ Party favors on the floor/ Group of girls banging on the door"). Read into it what you like.

To make ends meet, she got a job working in the A&R department at Taxi, which had her (a bit ironically) listening to music all day, deciding whether a band had hit-making potential or not. It was while working there, during January of 2007, that Perry received a call from the then head of Capitol Records, Jason Flom, who had heard an old recording of hers and wanted to meet with her. From there, Perry's rise was about as smooth sailing as could be -- she teamed up with Dr. Luke, a producer who had worked with artists like Kelly Clarkson and Avril Lavigne, and recorded an album. Capitol released the buzzy "UR So Gay" on iTunes in November of 2007, the even more buzzy "I Kissed a Girl" in May of '08 and when One of the Boys debuted in June, the album was an immediate hit; by February 2009 it reached certified platinum.

Thenewgay.net interview

Can someone add more of the interview from thenewgay.net that discusses the song "Ur So Gay". here's the source: http://thenewgay.net/2008/06/katy-perry-new-gay-interview.html The quote from that interview that is used on Katy's wikipage is basically Katy saying that her ex-boyfriend is so lame that he should've been gay. That sounds insensitive if we're only going to use that small quote. Katy goes into greater detail about how she doesn't believe in strict gay stereotypes later in the interview saying she knows "gay men that are more of a man than some of the men [she] slept with." The current quote used on her wikipage gives the impression that Katy feels all gay men are less manly. She clearifies this later in that interview. She also talks about how growing fanbase. Can someone post more of this interview? http://thenewgay.net/2008/06/katy-perry-new-gay-interview.html —Preceding unsigned comment added by Floetry Spades (talkcontribs) 17:12, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Frequent references to only listening to gospel

I think that the phrase "Katy was only allowed to listen to gospel music growing up, not what her mother called 'secular music'" should be reworded. It is secular music if it is not religious. Her mother did not invent the term. I also think that this article makes too big a deal out of the fact that she only listened to gospel music, which removes some NPOV (i.e. that Gospel music is bad) Also, nothing in the first introductory statement is referenced. 75.69.129.253 (talk) 18:54, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

Katy Perry's DOB

Katy Perry's real name is Katy Hudson and is the daughter of Keith and Mary Hudson, Founders of the Keith Hudson Ministries in Oceanside CA.

According to this page on their site, Mary Hudson names her kids and their ages. Their daughter "Katy" is listed as 27 years of age...and who knows when the last time this page was updated?

http://www.keithhudson.org/about-us.html

Could it be her year of birth is really 1982 instead of 84? Or earlier? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.171.183.162 (talk) 10:51, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

We generally prefer independent sources over related sources. In this case, Blender says she was 19 as of 9/15/04,[10] so that supports a 1984 or 1985 birth year. It's the birthday that's not overly clear from any of the sources in the early life paragraph. —C.Fred (talk) 14:10, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
She celebrated her 25th birthday on October 24 last year. This Daily Mail story features a photo caption which reads: "The morning after the night before: Katy and Russell spend her birthday at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills". Cliff smith talk 16:34, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

Music Academy of the West

This is the quote in the article:

She enrolled in at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, and studied Italian opera for a short time.[16]

Are you sure about this? That strikes me as a very odd little factoid, I've seen it backed nowhere else, the Academy doesn't list her under notable alumni, and the only reference to it is a dead link. GED test

The article states that Perry passed her GED test right after freshman year of high school. This is not possible; in order to take the GED test, you must be 17 1/2 or 18 years old already when you enroll for it. After ninth grade, she must have been only 14 or 15 years old (she is also born later in the year, in late October). Perhaps it can be clarified? Maybe she took it later, after leaving the school. Like her, I left high school at 15, after my first year, and that has only been a couple years (I'm considerably younger than Perry). I was told by numerous sources GED tests aren't available until you're at least 17 and some months. Dasani 02:34, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

Use of British English

Am I the only one to find it weird that suddenly there is some random British English in use for a couple of sentences? I can understand calling Russell's mom "mum" since he hails from Britain, but many Americans probably have no idea that a "hen party" is a bachelorette party. And seeing as Katy is American, it makes sense to keep the English usage consistent (organized, bachelorette party, maid of honor):

"...there was one noticeable absence, pop star Rihanna, who organised the hen party, and was tipped to be Katy's maid of honour..." Laelene (talk) 18:23, 26 October 2010 (UTC)laelene

Traditional Hindu Wedding

The citation does nothing to substantiate that their's was a Hindu wedding ceremony. The couple's own press release says they were wed by a christian minister. I don't care one way or the other how or by whom they were "married." But a "traditional Hindu ceremony" it was not.24.21.36.196 (talk) 07:26, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

Well, we have conflicting sources. The source cited in the article describes it as Hindu. One of the sources you link above describes it as Hindu. I'm not sure how "traditional" it was, but there definitely was something Hindu involved. We need to wait for someone who knows about Hindu weddings to express an opinion here before changing the article. "Hindu wedding" may not necessarily preclude a Christian minister's presence. Relationships that the subject of a biography have had are relevant to their life; hence they are on many biographies. They should not be removed because the subject has since married someone else. Perry featured in the video of one of McCoy's band's videos, so the relationship was professional and personal, hence doubly important. Jim Michael (talk) 07:42, 16 December 2010 (UTC)

Hindu wedding?

I know the wedding line cites a story in the Times of India, but there is also news of her wearing a grey Elie Saab at http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/10/25/katy-perry-wedding-dress-_n_773353.html. People.com mentions the ceremony was performed by a Christian Minister at http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20436789,00.html. TOI is a big newspaper, but it could be wrong, considering that right by the side it carried two links to gossip about how they wanted to marry in Japan, then Delhi. PS: There is a snapshot of her wearing the traditional Indian nose ring at some point. But that means nothing. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.176.36.108 (talk) 07:46, 11 March 2011 (UTC)

Needs tightening

In the personal life section, there are comments by Perry saying she thought she'd marry Brand (or something to that extent) but there's no flow in the text, with the next line about their wedding. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 22:26, 3 April 2011 (UTC)

Change name to Brand?

Cmcalpine has added text to indicate a change of name to Brand. This is not discussed in the body of the article and Pine has not supplied a source to support the name change. --BwB (talk) 13:00, 4 April 2011 (UTC)

As far as I'm aware, there has not yet been a legal name change. She has discussed it, but we would need reliable sources if and when it happens. There is a discussion in the archive that talked about the same thing, as well. Yves (talk) 14:40, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
Working by WP:COMMONNAME rules, we should keep the article as Katy Perry until she is regularly known as Katy Brand (which would of course cause problems with Katy Brand). Katy Perry is a stagename anyway, if we wanted to go by real name the article would have been Katheryn Hudson. -mattbuck (Talk) 14:47, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
I agree with this, but I don't think the name of the article was the issue here. Yves (talk) 15:08, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
Not the article name, but the lead saying here name is Katy Brand. Agree with Yvesnimo to keep as is for now and then change to Brand if she legally changes her name and we have sources. --BwB (talk) 16:03, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
What source says she's taken his name, though? Just because they're married does not mean that she's automatically changed it. We should not assume she has changed her last name; we should leave it as Hudson until we can verify the change. —C.Fred (talk) 17:03, 4 April 2011 (UTC)

Contralto claim is false

Please change the statement indicating that Katy has a contralto range. The top of that range is the B flat above middle C. She frequently sings, in full chest voice, the E flat above C2 (octave above middle C) in the song Firework (which is in A flat).

Please change this. It is inaccurate. 75.72.6.70 (talk) 18:01, 25 February 2011 (UTC) heashon2000

Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made. Although the link is currently dead, the claim of a contralto range goes back to a story published by MTV Asia. To change it, we need a source published somewhere that says otherwise about her range. To change this based on what we hear in her songs would be original research. —C.Fred (talk) 18:36, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

Also, Katy Perry is a contralto because she can sing very low notes. The beginning of Firework is very low, and Thinking of You is also very low. Firework is actually out of her range, but she tries to belt it out. So she is a contralto, with a wide range, as sopranos usually cannot hit those notes, or have a hard time hitting them. -Peterbrabel — Preceding unsigned comment added by Peterbrabel (talkcontribs) 18:29, 27 February 2011 (UTC)

This is incredible that one guy/gal says "To change this base on what we hear in her songs would be original research" and then another guy try to support that claim by saying "Katy Perry is a contralto because she can sing very low notes". That's completely unspecific. My claim IS specific. The lowest note Katy sings in Firework is an A-flat, a minor 3rd above the lowest note of the range described in the [contralto] article. My claim is not only also based on what "we" hear, it's also based on what's been published. But I guess Wiki isn't set up for musical integrity then.

Also, Peterbrabel, Firework is NOT out of Katy Perry's range because "she tries to belt it out". She successfully (not tries) sings it as a mainstay on her current tour and had done so on several guest appearances including this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2Zd5-sTvV0&feature=relmfu.

As for my claim, I can see no one here cares enough to validate this simply by citing the sheet music and reading the definition on [contralto]. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.72.6.70 (talk) 18:39, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

The MTV Asia article is wrong. She's a mezzo. Trust me I've been a band director for 30 years this July. If it's original research to change it to mezzo like it should be, then we should just remove the vocal range claim all together. The site itself doesn't even work. Irviding (talk) 23:41, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
