Huffins, also known as Huffines, is an unincorporated community in Cass County, Texas, United States.[1] According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 140 in 2000.
History[edit]
Huffins was most likely settled in the 1870s. A post office was established at Huffins in 1881 and remained in operation until 1905. Mail was then sent to Viola after its closure. It was named for local landowner R.M. Huffines. Thus, both the town and his family were referred to as either Huffins or Huffines in local newspapers well into the 20th century. In 1884, the community had 50 residents served by a church, two cotton gins, and some saw and gristmills. The population went down to 35 in 1890. In 1983, Huffins had 90 residents served by a church, a cemetery, and a town hall. Its population went up to 140 in 2000.[2]
Geography[edit]
Huffins is located at the intersection of Farm to Market Roads 251 and 1841, 8 mi (13 km) southeast of Atlanta in southeastern Cass County.[3]
Education[edit]
Huffins had its own school in 1884.[2] Today, the community is served by the Atlanta Independent School District.
