Museum hacks and museum edits[edit]
Hello there!
Upcoming events:
- February 6–8: The third annual ArtBytes Hackathon at the Walters Art Museum! This year Wikimedia DC is partnering with the Walters for a hack-a-thon at the intersection of art and technology, and I would like to see Wikimedia well represented.
- February 11: The monthly WikiSalon, same place as usual. RSVP on Meetup or just show up!
- February 15: Wiki Loves Small Museums in Ocean City. Mary Mark Ockerbloom, with support from Wikimedia DC, will be leading a workshop at the Small Museum Association Conference on how they can contribute to Wikipedia. Tons of representatives from GLAM institutions will be present, and we are looking for volunteers. If you would like to help out, check out "Information for Volunteers".
I am also pleased to announce events for Wikimedia DC Black History Month with Howard University and NPR. Details on those events soon.

Wikimedia DC celebrates Black History Month, and more![edit]
Hello again!
Not even a week ago I sent out a message talking about upcoming events in DC. Guess what? There are more events coming up in February.
First, as a reminder, there is a WikiSalon on February 11 (RSVP here or just show up) and Wiki Loves Small Museums at the Small Museum Association Conference on February 15 (more information here).
Now, I am very pleased to announce:
- Tuesday, February 17 from 10 AM to 3 PM there will be #WikiTurgy at the University of Maryland. Join fellow theatre enthusiasts for a “mass act of public dramaturgy!”
- Thursday, February 19 from 10 AM to 4 PM we are hosting the Howard University Black History Edit-a-Thon. We are working in partnership with the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center to improve Wikipedia’s coverage of African-American and African diasporic history.
- Tuesday, February 24 from 6 PM to 8 PM we have the Black History Month “First Edit” at NPR. Help improve Wikipedia and help others make their first edit to Wikipedia!
- Finally, our monthly dinner meetup is on Saturday, February 28.
There is going to be a lot going on, and I hope you can come to some of the events!

I had a quick question about what sources of rainfall are considered acceptable for rainfall records. Norbert dumped over 5" of rain in my neck of the woods last year; if I go to the WFO page on the event, I see an ALERT gauge reporting 5.63" of rainfall. (The FCDMC page about the event has a total of 5.51"). However, the NWS WFO reports that a spotter measured 6.09" of rain during the event. Which total do we go with? Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 01:04, 27 May 2015 (UTC)
- I just saw this. I'd contact the Phoenix office (that's PSR I believe) and see where the source for the 6.09" was. Did you check CoCoRAHS? I got 6.25" from CoCoRAHS when I did the rainfall graphic a several months back. Thegreatdr (talk) 20:22, 20 July 2015 (UTC)

Ongoing issues with Wikipedia article Cloud[edit]
@Thegreatdr: A few years ago, you tried to give me some help with my ongoing efforts to improve the main cloud article. At the time, the main concern was an inadequate number of inline citations. There are now over 100 citations which I hope are of adequate quality. However an unsuccessful GA nomination last year raised doubts in my own mind about my overall writing style and skills as an editor. After further work, I've tried to put in a request for a PR to update where the article stands. The automated instructions said among other things to create a new discussion page. When I tried to do so, I just got sent back to the regular discussion page where I left the following comments:
- I have been trying ro raise the cloud article from a C-grade to at least a B-grade for a long time. I think I've addressed issues raised during the unsuccessful GA review earlier this year, but I still need very specific comments about other content and writing style that may be undermining my efforts. The introduction is good according to one senior editor who has commented on this discussion page and says this should now be a B-grade article. Apart from the intro, I think most other sections of the article are in need of a PR, although I think I've taken a balanced and neutral approach to the section on forms, etages, and cross-classification into genera.
- I don't seem to be having any success following the instructions to create a new peer review discussion page. I just keep getting sent back to this page. This whole process needs to be made more user friendly.
I wonder if you can help me sort this procedure out so I can get a proper PR of the cloud article? Even some formal or informal comments of your own would be helpful. February events and meetups in DC[edit]
Greetings from Wikimedia DC!
February is shaping up to be a record-breaking month for us, with nine scheduled edit-a-thons and several other events:
- On Friday, February 12, NPR will host a Black History Month First Edit event.
- On Saturday, February 13 and Sunday, February 14, we're working with the Wiki Education Foundation to hold a series of four edit-a-thons at the AAAS 2016 Annual Meeting.
- On Tuesday, February 16, we're holding the Smithsonian American Art Museum and American University WikiWorkshop with Professor Andrew Lih's class.
- On Saturday, February 20, the Smithsonian American Art Museum will host the African American Artists Edit-a-Thon.
- On Friday, February 26, Howard University will host its second annual Black History Month Edit-a-Thon.
- On Saturday, February 27, we have three different events. In the morning, we're holding an Accessibility Edit-a-Thon at Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library. In the afternoon, we'll host our second February WikiSalon at Cove Dupont Circle, followed by our monthly dinner meetup at Vapiano.

TC rainfall in the US map needs update[edit]
@Thegreatdr: Hello. Can you please update the Tropical cyclone rainfall in the US map, at List of wettest tropical cyclones in the United States? Hurricane Harvey shattered all of the previous records, so Amelia needs to be replaced with Harvey for Texas. Cyclone[edit]
I am checking Good Articles with cleanup tags on them. Cyclone has a tag asking for expansion of the section on climate change, and I am inclined to agree with the tagger. This is a vital article of top importance to this project, which I think is reasonably active, so I am hoping someone is willing to look into this. As an aside, by far the most content contributed to this article comes from an ip address that has been blocked for abusing privlages.[1] Not sure what is going on there, but it is strange. Article of the month, by Jason Rees History of tropical cyclone naming - The practice of using names to identify tropical cyclones goes back several centuries, with storms named after places, saints or things they hit before the formal start of naming in each basin. The credit for the first usage of personal names for weather systems is given to the Queensland Government Meteorologist Clement Wragge, who named tropical cyclones and anticyclones between 1887 and 1907. This system of naming fell into disuse for several years after Wragge retired, until it was revived in the latter part of World War II for the Western Pacific basin. Over the following decades, various naming schemes have been introduced for the world's oceans, including for parts of the Atlantic, Pacific and the Indian Ocean. The majority of these lists are compiled by the World Meteorological Organization's tropical cyclone committee for the region and include names from different cultures as well as languages. Over the years there has been controversy over the names used at various times, with names being dropped for religious and political reasons. For example, female names were exclusively used in the basins at various times between 1945 - 2000 and were the subject of several protests. The names of significant tropical cyclones in the North Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean and Australian region are retired from the naming lists and replaced with another name, at meetings of the various tropical cyclone committees. Storm of the month and other tropical activity  Cyclone Fani was an extremely severe cyclonic storm that made landfall in Odisha, India on May 3. The storm achieved peak intensity as a near Category 5-equivalent cyclone with 3-minute sustained winds of 215 km/h (130 mph), 1-minute sustained winds of 250 km/h (155 mph), and a minimum central pressure of 937 hPa (mbar). Fani caused over $1.8 billion (2019 USD) in damage in India and Bangladesh and killed at least 89 people.

Hello, I am aware that this occurred many years ago on 2004 Pacific typhoon season, but copying content from other sources are still very serious violations of Wikipedia policy.
