The Novels WikiProject Newsletter - Issue V - October 2006
Our project has been working on novel articles for sometime now and has just passed the 4000 articles tagged as part of the project. Already we are on 4441 as of today.
The /Assessment department has been making progress with discussions on the top priority level of novels. These are those articles that should be present in any version of this encyclopedia.
The "Members" list has been modified (preparatory to removing the inactive ones to an archive or "inactive" list).

The project has currently 142 members, 16 joined & 0 leavers since the last newsletter at the start of September 2006.

Those working on auto generated lists have been a bit quiet recently. However there have been some work done on the /NovelsInCompleteInfobox list, focusing on adding those missing "genre" entries - however after being rerun today after a 2 month gap the number of articles selected has gone up from 1049 to 1172. We need help to ensure the informatin gets added to the infoboxes.
Started in July, Wikipedia:Notability (books) is still being debated, if you have not seen these do take a look.

The 1 Ceres RM
Hi Nightstallion,
I just noticed an anonymous user slightly changed the text of your vote at Talk:1 Ceres#Requested move from "minor planet" to "dwarf planet". Technically that's correct as 100,000+ asteroids are minor planets whereas there are only three dwarf planets. I almost reverted it as it doesn't seem good form to change people's text, but decided just to notify you instead and you can clarify if you like.

I had taken up the habit of using ISO codes instead when I was in Gymnasium, much in the same way that I opted for a Druckschrift writing style of the Schreibschrift usually taught in elementary schools when I was only eight or nine. Wikiversity logo
There is some confusion in the phase 4 vote (in my head at least). When voting for a design, one votes for more than one instance, since there are multiple options, especially for the "A" design. As example say A13 and B1 are liked the most. Then even if less people like option A13 compared to B1, by adding votes for the other A designs, B may have less votes than A in the end. This may be in contradiction to the "will of the electors". Did I miss something? Awolf002 23:09, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
There are no different designs in this phase any longer. These are just different versions of the same basic design, which will have to be changed not to use Wikimedia colours, anyway; after every logo vote, the chosen logo was refined even more before it was made the new logo. I doubt there are many people who prefer a special version of A over a special version of B, but not all of them; maybe I'm wrong in that, though. —Nightstallion(?) 10:28, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

Federacy
I found your post on the federacy talk to border Wikipedia:No personal attacks. Because actually I have delved deep into the issue of assymmetric federalism and federacies (I finished my bachelor of arts in political science cum laude at Leiden University this September on basis of thesis concerning Comparative federalism that scored 9/10). I can give you references for all the statements I've made there.
I have decided not to reply on the articles talk because the discussion was going no where. Whether passer-by was right or me, would not have mattered for the article. Passer by expected me to defend a concept used by political scientists in scientific works. On wikipedia that is the defense, we are not supposed to critically reflect on concepts ourselves. Because a) it is debatable whether Austria functions like a federation (see Erk, J., “Austria: A Federation without Federalism” in Publius (2004) 34:1, pp.1-20) and b) because according to classic texts like Wheare (Federal Government, 1954), in federations (the term "pure" federations is not scientific) states should have equal representation in the higher house, which Austria lacks, because Laender have unequal representations in the Bundesrat. If there is unequal representation that is a sign that some states are more powerful than others. C mon 20:15, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
Mh. Isn't b) debatable, though? I have not studied political sciences yet (I'll get Mathematics and Linguistics out of the way first ;)), but it would appear logical to me that there would be a set of different ways of defining the upper house which would be equivalent in their "federation-ness"... Regarding a), it may not *always* function as a federation de facto, but with the coming state reform, it's likely to get the de facto situation more in line with what should be happening de iure. (Apart from that, de facto the influence of the local branches of Austria's two large parties in the national parties is very strong -- if that isn't federal... ;)) Again, sorry for appearing PA-y, it wasn't intended. —Nightstallion(?) 20:21, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
Four and a half months after the article is created, I'm still not sure it's worth keeping around. The term federacy as used in the article seems to be a specific meaning used only by Elazar and a few other political scientists who cite Elazar heavily. I don't know how big the field of comparitive federalism actually is, but I don't see any evidence that the rest of the profession accepts Elazar's definition of the word. In searching for occurences of "federacy", I find the Federacy article, some papers by (or quoting) Elazar, and a number of definitions and articles where it is used as a shorthand for "confederacy".
I'm rather tempted to put the article up for an AfD, for the reasons I've mentioned above, and because much of the content seems to be OR. Any thoughts on whether I should or should not? Argyriou(talk) 05:45, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

I just noticed this article and I'd like your opinion on its notability. I've removed a dead IW links to the Danish Wikipedia, and, well, it is pretty obvious who created this content. Do you think he's notable or not? My first hunch would say no, since I have never heard this party referred to at all in Denmark, which is apparently home of the party HQ [probably his own house]. Then again, in a Danish context, I presume the party could be compared to the Socialist Youth Front in terms of notability, but I'm not sure Mr. Paasovaara is notable as such (yet?). Thoughts? Austrian schilling
I have done a major update on Austrian schilling. And I found the National Bank used öS for the symbol in the past.If you're interested, please review. There are some things I'm not so sure of. Most of the time the reverse side is the side that has value, and obverse is the side that has emphasis on the symbol of the state (according to obverse and reverse). So I don't know what to make of the 1 Schilling coin, which has the state title and value on the same side. I currently put that side as obverse, but the National Bank arrange the images as if that side reverse. Mh. Good questions, but I'm afraid I can only guess, too... öS is right, yeah, totally forgot about that. I always considered the Edelweiß to be the obverse of the 1 Schilling coin, and I'm afraid I don't know either what the 5 and 10 Schilling coins actually depicted, though I suppose the rider could have been Prinz Eugen... The NovelsInCompleteInfobox has been regenerated at the start of October and was shown to have grown rather than shrunk! So this month I have concentrated my efforts (with some help from Grey Shadow (talk·contribs)) on the novels missing "genre" tags. These "genre-less" have now "all" been dealt with. Hopefully we can break the back of this load of work, but it will need help. It would be nice to get these worklists to a state where they can monitor the newly created articles rather than cleaning the retrospective material.
Collaboration of the Month
The Collaboration of the Month is going well. October's collaboration was slightly compromised by the removal of our notice early on; however there were still nearly 80 edits to improve the article. This months Collaboration has been selected by popular vote and is Doctor Zhivago (novel)
Current debates
We have a project structure that allows for the formation of special interest task forces (al la "WP:MILHIST".) This is useful for identifying groups of Novels editors who have a common interest. (i.e. Science fiction novels, Crime Novels, Children's novels, Classic literature, Russian novels etc.) Would there be interest out there in setting one or more of these up. Comments please to the General Forum.
The first person to start the article is mentioned in the next newsletter. This months' article is Lawrence Durrell's novel Clea.

OMG! I finally got somewhere I could type.
Hi. I couldn't figure out how to leave a comment or edit the HDI page and I don't have time to learn right now, but I did want to point out to someone that it appears to me that Australia is colored dark brown on the HDI map, ie, very low human development, rock bottom. I'm no map whiz and for a second I was wondering what the hell country that big island was
because I knew it couldn't be Aussie with it's super-high HDI.
Thanks for all the great work you people do. I always love when The Goggle drives me through The Internets over to The Wiki.

Sorry. Maybe it's the angle of my light. Australia doesn't look the same color as North America on my screen, but brown or black. Well, my best friend has told me for years that something's not the color I thought it was. Maybe she's onto something.

'언' ist die koreanische Transliteration des chinesischen Zeichen '言'. Das koreanische Zeichen '말', ein Synonym von '언', ist aber rein koreanisches Wort, das man Hangeul bezeichnet. Daher wäre es hübsch, das letztere auf dem Bild zu sehen. -- 아흔(A-heun)

Was ich oben zum Ausdruck gebracht habe, wird keiner für falsch halten dürfen, falls er Koreanisch als Muttersprache beherrscht - es gibt manche, die mit eigener Muttersprache schlampig umgehen. Which is better?I'm afraid I can't speak German, but I thought this would be the best place to ask this question: my computer has two forms of the glyph, a rounded one and a square block one (I don't have calligraphic version though). Next Serbian presidential election

You removed "merge" tag. But the name of article is not suitable. "Next" makes no sense.After this "Next" election(2-3 months later) how we may call this article,"Old" or something else. Maybe it is suitable by the name of year,ie; 2006 elections, 2010 elections etc. Think about that.

Linguistics
Just out of curiosity what do you believe you would get out of a linguistics degree (you say on your userpage that you are considering getting one)? A job? The only job I can think of for a person with a linguistics degree is translator, and perhaps researcher. Frankly, nothing but the enjoyment of studying it (and anotehr Mag. and Dr. before my name ;)). Storm of the month
Xangsane to the east of the Philippines
Typhoon Xangsane, known as Typhoon Milenyo in the Philippines was a destructive typhoon that affected the Philippines and Indochina. The storm caused severe flooding and landslides in the regions it affected and was responsible for at least 279 deaths and $747 million (USD) in damage, mostly in the Philippines and Vietnam. Xangsane formed to the east of the Philippines and rapidly intensified, striking Samar Island as a Category 4 typhoon. It weakened over the Philippines, but again reached Category 4 strength in the South China Sea. After its landfall in Vietnam, the typhoon dissipated, with its remnant crossing Indochina and entering the Bay of Bengal.
One hurricane, Hurricane Paul, formed in the eastern Pacific and hit Mexico. There were also two tropical storms, Norman and Olivia, and two tropical depressions in the basin.
In addition to Typhoon Xangsane, two further typhoons and two tropical storms developed in the west Pacific. Typhoon Soulik and Tropical Storms Bebinca and Rumbia both stayed clear of land, whilst Typhoon Cimaron hit the Philippines killing at least 19 people there, before it dissipated in the South China Sea.
The North Indian Ocean saw one storm, Cyclonic Storm Ogni form in the Bay of Bengal.
The 2006-2007 Southern Hemisphere tropical cyclone season got underway, with Tropical Cyclone Xavier forming to the west of Fiji. There were two further tropical depressions in the South Pacific and a tropical disturbance in the South Indian Ocean.
Likewise the articles on meteorologists such as Lixion Avila are poor.
Member of the month
Cyclone barnstar
The October Member of the Month is Coredesat. Coredesat joined the WikiProject in March and has contributed to many diverse areas within the project. He has written two featured articles on Atlantic storms and a number of good articles on current typhoons. However, the article he is most proud of is a disambiguation page, a sorely neglected portion of the project.
The various agencies which report on tropical cyclones use a variety of different scales to measure the storms strength. The most familiar of these is the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale and this is the de facto standard in the project and should be used everywhere. However, as it is only official in the Atlantic and East Pacific, other local scales should be used when discussing storms in other regions and given primacy over the Saffir-Simpson Scale. The Saffir-Simpson scale is based on 1-minute averages, but other scales are generally based upon 10-minute averages, which are approximately 15% lower.
This table provides a useful-at-a-glance comparison of the various scales currently in use. Further complications arise due to the fact different agencies obtain different estimates for the same storm at the same time, so be careful to use the most appropriate source agency.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!

Deadline for entries is December 15th
Again, the issue of the month is inline citations. A Day in the Life, A Hard Day's Night (song), and Get Back have all been defeatured, as they failed to satisfy criterion 1(c) of What is a featured article?, and other song FAs are due for the chopping block. Inline citations are an important aspect of articles—they ensure verifiability and reliability, and they remove original research. Additionally, they give readers the option to read the original source material and view it within context.
Basically:
All direct quotations attributed to Beatles members pooled from interviews need full inline citations.
All critical comments about songs or albums need full inline citations to notable music critics, magazines opinions, or reviews, as opposed to being merely comments by Wikipedians.
Inline citations need: author name, article name, publication date, and name of publication. Such info is still preferable even if quoting from an interview posted upon a website; when this is the case, place the URL link at the end of the citation with the date it was last accessed. (This will help editors retrieve the page using the Wayback Machine, should the link go dead in the future.)
Beatles News
The Beatles are due to release a soundtrack album, LOVE, at the end of November, as a companion to their Cirque du Soleiladaptation of the same name. It will feature remastered and remixed versions of their previously released songs, including some new medleys.

The Wings tours are really nicely documented now (see Category:Wings tours), but Category:The Beatles tours is almost empty. Kingboyk and the rest of us would love to see (and read) articles on each Beatles tour, including the pre-fame tours of the UK—and the Hamburg trips, of course!
Our project members are too modest to report any awards they may have given or received.
From the Editors
Wherever possible, editors should help to trim down on list-like prose within Beatles articles. They should convert list-like sections into fluent, cohesive prose which ties an article's sections together. Lists make articles disjointed, awkward, and difficult to read.
Be sure to take part in the Featured Article drive, and don't forget those inline citations!

Hi, you recently tagged Image:OECS logo.svg to be transwikied to Commons. I have the high-resolution vector version on my computer, but I've uploaded it under the fair use doctrine and I'm not exactly sure if it would be appropriate for the Commons. Hi, you mention the extended Latin alphabet; could you explain what that means? I thought some of your examples were actually Greek (beta for example) but I imagine you know what you are talking about so I would appreciate the information. Well, the basic Latin alphabet is just the standard twenty-six letters from A through Z. The extended Latin alphabet include all kinds of diacritic-based variations of basic Latin letters (such as ä, í, è, û, ...) as well as all supplements which exist in languages which basically use the Latin alphabet, but have extended it somewhat (like the German ß, the Icelandic ð and þ, the Scandinavian ø, the Azerbaijani ə). I see no problem with using all those characters in article titles and text. Japanese, Chinese, Arabian and so on should, of course, be transliterated. —Nightstallion(?) 15:42, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
List of European Union member states by accession
Hello Nightstallion. I've been looking for the exact date when Morocco's application was rejected. Unfortunately, I've found nothing so far on the Internet. The only somewhat promising text I found was from Collier's Year Book which is part of Encarta CDROM encyclopaedia. However, Marocco's entry there for 1987 only contained the following: "Moroccan Foreign Minister Abdellatif Filali formally presented Rabat's application for EEC membership in Brussels on July 21. Since EEC members are required to be both European and full democracies, the Moroccan application faced an uphill battle." This information is already contained in the article here. As for other countries, I'll try to find other snippets of information when I find time, but I wouldn't be too hopeful. Hope you'll be luckier than me. St. Martin/St. Barth status?
Have you by chance heard anymore about when St.-Martin and St.-Barth leave Guadeloupe and take up their new status? I had read over the summer that it all was to take effect around now, but somehow the status got delayed in Paris. Dear Hoshie and Nightstallion, this is what I heard about St. Barth from my friends there: the Senate voted to accept the change on Oct. 31, but the National Assembly must adopt the document before the change becomes official. France is holding presidential elections next year (primary in April and the final vote in May, 2007) so there are some changes in the parliamentary sessions, the next one being shortened, which I think creates some anxiety: they don't really know if the National Assembly will have time to debate and vote on the changes in time. I've heard that Bruno Magras, Mayor of Saint Barth (uhm is that mayor for life?? ;) He, he. Well, the man is good at what he does, but he's been holding positions of power on that islands for as long as I can remember!) is pushing hard for it to be brought up for debate in the National Assembly ASAP, like late January, but even so, it's not sure that the changes can be approved and put into effect by the end of the session, which is at the end of Feb. I noticed your comment here Talk:Partij voor Naastenliefde, Vrijheid en Diversiteit#Title "it should not include a "&"; this character screws up all attempts to watch or unwatch the page, for instance, as one has to manually insert the html code for "&" into the address bar." I know this comment was in May but is it a problem you still have? I don't appear to have any problems with a question mark and my watch list. Try User:Nil Einne/Sandbox/Trying question & mark if you want. I'm using Firefox 2.0. I'm not planning to create or rename any pages with the ampersand/question mark/& but was just wondering whether it's really a wikimedia problem that's been fixed or it was/is a browser problem. Still, I and a lot of other people have been trying to channel all information that would be left in disarray on Wikipedia into election articles by creating the articles on the elections as stubs beforehand. South American Community of Nations
Hey, how are you? Having a look at the discussion of the article in question I could notice how you congratulated and supported the SACN. I just wanna thank you for your nice words and your feeling for South America as a whole. Unfortunately, I cannot see the changes we were supposed to experience with the Union. Recently, there has been a meeting in which every associate member agreed to revoke the so-called visa. This visa, as you may know, was a compulsory and expensive document required when travelling from one country to the other. I'm pretty sure this fact is really important for us as a subcontinent, because it allows everyone to cross the border for a maximum of 90 days without showing any documentation.
Anyway, there are still many things to do. I hope we can see the difference in a couple of years time.

Naming convention for elections
Hi Nightstallion. I noticed your amendment to WP:NAME#Elections ([3]) regarding future elections. There seems to be a chnage here from the 30th Irish general election format to your new Next Irish general election format. Does this reflect a general consensus on the best naming convention for future elections? Mh, well, there were a number of problems with creating election page articles for Germany and Greece, where different people wanted to use different numbering systems for counting the elections; we agreed then that using "next" instead of "n-th" would ensure that the article title is correct and neutral... Well, it's kind of complicated and I'm not quite sure myself -- hell, who is, anyway? I certainly don't believe in any kind of god or gods, and I strongly doubt all kinds of esoteric things, but I have a certain feeling that there's something special about living beings that makes me believe that there's some kind of "soul", "spirit", "essence of being" or something close to that, call it what you want. Date of next Thai election
Hi there! I noticed that you changed the name of the Next Thai legislative election article to Thai legislative election, 2007 and also changed the Thailand crisis template to specificy 2007 as the time of the next election.
However, the latest announcement of the junta puts the timing of the next election at sometime in 2008. See here "Drafting new charter 'may take 17 mths'". Since the junta has flip-flopped quite a bit on the timing for the next election over the past months, I don't think we should presume to state when the election should occur. Best just to say that it has been promised some time in the future. The article should, IMO, be titled Thai legislative election, post-2006 coup until a very very firm date is scheduled. The Novels WikiProject Newsletter: Issue VII - December 2006
Due to the diligance of many editors we now have more than 5000 articles tagged as part of the project.
Keeping the Novels announcements page up to date and fresh is in need of a volunteer who can keep an eye on it and keep it's content fresh and lively. Please let us know if you are able to help with this. It doesn't involve much, but it needs to be looked at regularly.

Plenty of work has been done on articles included in the "auto lists" in the last couple of months. Particluarly so for the NovelsInCompleteInfobox list, which is constantly being worked on by a number of editors and most of those missing "genre" entries and quite a number with missing "ISBN" entires have been dealt with. A re-run of this list is due soon, courtesy of user Eagle.
Collaboration of the Month
The Collaboration of the Month is generally going well, although the input for November's was less than inspiring, perhaps we can do better with the next one. This months Collaboration has been selected by popular vote and is Waverley (novel) the historical drama by Sir Walter Scott.
Current debates
A new policy proposal has been started and the various points are to be seen at Wikipedia:Speedy deletion criterion for unsourced articles, please take a look at these and comment. This is a vital subject and all editors should consider the implications. These are NOT active yet, but could have wide reaching consequences. Please contribute your views.
We have a project structure that allows for the formation of special interest task forces (al la "WP:MILHIST".) This was mentioned last month and a few have indicated interest. This is useful for identifying groups of Novels editors who have a common interest. (i.e. Science fiction novels, Crime Novels, Children's novels, Classic literature, Russian novels etc.) Would there be interest out there in setting one or more of these up. Comments please to the General Forum. Currently I am considering starting with "Crime Novels" and "Russian Novels" to see what can be achieved.

Wikipedia's standards are improving all the time, with the result that many articles in The Beatles Wikiproject are being nominated for review of their FA and GA status - and many are losing that accolade. It is difficult, with such a large number of articles and the ease with which editors may make changes which are detrimental, to maintain the standard of articles, let alone improve them. As ever, members efforts are both appreciated and needed to keep the Project on course.
Beatles News
A Beatles compilation called "Love", featuring tracks remastered by George Martin (with his son Giles), has been released and has made number 1 in Canada.
The impending divorce between Paul McCartney and the former Heather Mills continues to make the pages in the tabloid press in the UK.
Project News
New to the Project Log is the nomination of four articles for consideration as suitable for collaboration, in the manner in which Paul McCartney is now being edited, once the aforementioned article is completed. The nominations are George Harrison, Apple Corp, The Beatles(!!), all proposed by Kingboyk and John Lennon, proposed by LuciferMorgan. Interested editors should make themselves known on the various article talk pages.
If one is to be mercenary about the subject, it should be noted that Paul McCartney is going to be more noteworthy than usual in the near future as his divorce case comes to court. In that case it is great to note that a small group of Project Members (plus another individual who does not feel compelled to register himself despite important contributions) have worked very hard, and in an atmosphere of good humour, to take the McCartney piece to a succesful Good Article nomination. Perhaps this is the method to use for future articles, a small dedicated team concentrating on one subject at a time. Of course, all members are invited to join any existing group or even go about forming their own. Please note any such action in the Project Log.
If you've just joined, add your name to the Participants section of Wikipedia:WikiProject The Beatles. You'll get a mention in the next issue of the Newsletter and get it delivered as desired. Also, please include your own promotions and awards in future issues. Don't be shy!
Lastly, this is your newsletter and you can be involved in the creation of the next issue (Issue 009 – January 2007). Any and all contributions are welcome. Simply let yourself be known to any of the undersigned, or just start editing!

Concordia is currently trying to relaunch. I, and all the members of the ex-council, wish to welcome new members to the group. We are a group who aim to promote remaining civil, in an environment where messages can easily be interpretated wrongly.

We are a community, so can only work though community contributions and support. It's the helping that counts.
Decision Making
The council expired one month ago, but due to the current position of the group the current council will remain until the position of the group can be assessed, and whether it would be sensible to keep Concordia going. For most decisions, however, it will be decided by all who choose to partake in discussions. I am trying to relaunch because of the vast amounts of new members we have received, demonstrating that the aims are supported.

I have a new problem with an anonymous user. I had renamed Armen Sarkissian into Armen Sargsyan since it's the correct transcription of his name Արմեն Սարգսյան. An anonymous user has reverted it using cut and paste : [6]. He has some reasons to do so that he explained... on another page! (Talk:Aram Sargsyan). I copied and pasted his argumentation on Talk:Armen Sargsyan. Since those reasons don't convince me, I suppose I could simply revert his erasing of the Armen Sargsyan page, but I'm sure he'll do it again in the future. I have something to say that is not directly related to the original intent of this discussion. There is a Portal:European Union/Member states and Portal:European Union/Member States with the latter being a preview. I think this is abusing the case sensitiveness of wiki article namespace. It mostly looks fine to me, Joe, though the "euro-region" bit in Hungary has to be wrong (most notably because euroregions are transnational cooperative measures within the Union, not subnational administrative entities), and all dates should be linked. One could also question the very differing content and information included for the different countries -- why is it special that Lithuania joined the WTO, or that Greece and Spain joined the euro, and so on? —Nightstallion(?) 12:57, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
Mainly the reason for the differing content was because of the country article itself. I used what I could find, but tried to make them similar, such as government types, borders and multinational organization memberships. I'll get the links and clean up Hungry. It's gonna be hard to take it to ArbCom since thr RfC isn't even gonna get off the ground,since I need two signatories. Huaiwei evidently knows the rules well and uses it to play a game. You need two persons to sign an RfC, and nobody seems willing to sign an RfC unless they are the one personally being insulted, and you can ony bring up one dispute per RfC. This is the monthly newsletter of WikiProject Tropical Cyclones. This shortened late issue covers just global tropical cyclone activity in November, to prevent the next newsletter from being too large.
Tropical cyclone activity
One hurricane, Hurricane Sergio, formed in the eastern Pacific. Sergio was the longest lasting November Pacific hurricane recorded. Two other tropical cyclones, Tropical Storm Rosa and a tropical depression formed in the basin. None of the systems affected land.
A total of three typhoons formed in the western Pacific, and all the storms followed a similar track across the Philippines. Typhoon Cimaron formed at the end of October and lasted into November, killing 19 people. Typhoon Chebi existed during the middle of the month and was the weakest of the three causing minor damages. The most devastating storm of the month, Typhoon Durian hit the Philippines on November 30, killing at least 720 people in the island nation.
Two named cyclones developed in the Southern Hemisphere, Tropical Cyclone Yani in the South Pacific and Moderate Tropical Storm Anita in the Southwest Indian Ocean. Two unnamed depression also formed in the South Pacific. None of these storms affected land.
Editorial
The lateness of this edition is due to me being on an wikibreak and no-one taking up the slack. My wikibreak was the result of a lightning strike damaging my internet connection and frying my router, and the time taken for the replacement to arrive. As this issue is almost 3 weeks later than planned, only the monthly cyclone activity for November has been included. The next letter will be produced for January 7, 2006 and will be larger than normal to cover both month's Wikipedia news and December's tropical activity. Romania
I was under the impression Romania had cribbed the French 5th republic constitution pretty much wholesale, so assumed foreign summits would fall under the President's jurisdiction. Wikipedia has Romania listed as semi-presidential elsewhere. The Tom 19:00, 24 December 2006 (UTC)
Interestingly, it looks like though just the Bulgarian PM has been there as an observer at recent EU summits, invitations have been extended to both the Romanian President and PM, who've both been attending. That makes Romania the only state on the invite list to get two head-of-government-type invites. I can't imagine that'll continue into 2007. The Tom 19:13, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

Well, let's see what happens. Another apparent benefit that prompted me to add the "or territory" is that "Country or territory" accomodates both those whose POV is that place X is a territory as well as those whose POV is that place X is a country, without it suggesting a stance either way.
