Retirement for 2007[edit]
It seems that WMO, didn't retire any names for 2007. So Dean and Felix, will be an addition, along with Emily, Cleo, Ethel, Edith to become Cat. 5, and not have it's name retired. Do you think that I should add the "Lack of Retirement" to their pages? EC (talk) 06:39, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

Tropical Storm Vamei GA Sweeps Review: On Hold and Overview of Upcoming Reviews[edit]
You may remember me as having reviewed a few of your GA nominations in the past. As part of the WikiProject Good Articles, we're doing sweeps to go over all of the current GAs and see if they still meet the GA criteria. I'm specifically going over all of the "Meteorology and atmospheric sciences" articles to ensure their quality.
I have reviewed Tropical Storm Vamei and believe the article currently meets the majority of the criteria and should remain listed as a Good article. In reviewing the article, I have found there are some issues that may need to be addressed, and I'll leave the article on hold for seven days for them to be fixed. I have left this message on your talk page since you have significantly edited the article (based on using this article history tool) and because you are one of the leading members of the related WP. Please consider helping address the several points that I listed on the talk page of the article, which shouldn't take too long to fix with the assistance of multiple editors.
I will be reviewing all of the hurricane/tropical storm articles and if there are any issues concerning sourcing, fair use rationales, lead expansions, or other issues, I will be leaving a message on the talk pages of the main contributors and the WikiProject talk pages. If you prefer, I can leave all of the messages on a subpage or just the project's talk page if you prefer that. It is entirely up to you since you and your fellow editors. I'm sure I will become quite the thorn in your side for the issues I bring up, but I'm sure for many of the articles they still meet the criteria and will not need further corrections. Re: History of hurricanes in the Caribbean[edit]
Well, I personally decided to leave the article as a disambiguation page. I read the talk page, and I agreed that the article was poorly written and redundant. Additionally, it did not include Dean and Felix, which were obviously Caribbean systems. I think separate, specific pages (i.e. List of Florida hurricanes, List of Bermuda hurricanes, et al) are much more effective. These "regional" pages (similar to the Effects of Tropical Cyclone --- in --- pages) would be much better for the Caribbean, which is exceptionally diverse. I actually prefer those articles for all areas across the world that are affected by tropical cyclones. CVW (Talk) 23:45, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

Re: The infobox[edit]
The infobox was in my userspace. It is still there, but hidden. I don't want to work on anything if one or two editors decide they want the problems to stay in. For example, I would probably oppose a FAN for Cyclone Guba or any similar article because the color scale decided on members of this project is being used incorrectly in the article, and probably would confuse readers. You can't refuse to address issues because things are done a certain way traditionally. Anway, the template is still hidden in my userspace. It's about 1/6 to 1/4 complete, and I was still trying to address all of the little issues I could find in the articles. You are welcome to copy it elsewhere and work on it. Sorry, but it is not worth my time to work through bureaucracy created by a couple of people. Putting every package of goods up to a vote doesn't give a very good product. Someone's already rolling out the version of the template with a lot of issues left to address, and that was done by 'consensus.'Potapych (talk) 23:06, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
Re: Henri[edit]
Although the image can be cropped, I just didn't like the image, because there's nothing in it to show position (even though at least the Yucatan should be in that image.) Instead, I uploaded a GIBBS IR image of Henri, not only because of the land masses, but for size. Now that the 1979 images exist in the archive, I can find slightly better images of all storms this season (plus Ernesto of 82).
On a side note, I'm starting to think the meteorological bureaus all over the world need a new rule: Never name tropical cyclones "Ivan". Each time one was, something unique (or bad) happened (80: Category 2 in Vince-territory, 98: one of four active hurricanes, 08: 80+ dead in Madagascar, 97: one of the most intense typhoons ever (with its partner Joan), and 2004's is apparent). RFA 2[edit]
1916 AHS article[edit]
I noticed that your edit summary states the season still has two intense hurricanes prior to August. I think that's incorrect because the changes have been approved into the HURDAT best track. It isn't visible on some sites (i.e. Unisys Weather), but they're still waiting for the release of Erin's TCR. Essentially, the changes are official; some sites won't update data until the 2007 season's reports are completed. By the way, do you want to review my Hurricane Emilia (1994) article? I created it. Hurricane Camille GA Sweeps Review: On Hold[edit]

HHF Automatic Inductions[edit]
The following storms have been found to meet the current criteria for automatic induction into the Hurricane Hall of Fame and will be inducted with the five elected inductees this June: Great Caribbean Hurricane of 1831, Hurricane San Marcos of 1870, Great Mexican Hurricane of 1909*, 1935 Caribbean Hurricane. Note, a special exception was made in the case of the 1909 storm. It was initially going to highlight this year's ballot, but in light of the very competetive list this year, it was inducted automatically on the assumption that it would have been elected anyway. - I have a good idea of who the nominees are but since the voting won't start until May and the induction ceremony isn't until mid-June, I'm being somewhat secretive. The list is highlighted by an old prologue to Katrina and four storms that were unjustly not retired. Another big contender is the deadliest storm to kill less than 1,000 people. Two other candidates were overshadowed by more famous storms in the same season. As for the other two, one helped make 19** a bad year for Florida and the other was a weak but lethally wet storm from early in WWII. HaHa! I'm such an asshole, you can figure it out ;) <!-- --> I'm starting to develop a plan for international expansion. Any international storm will not have a description on my HHF pages here on my user page, there just isn't enough space. I'm very hesitant to expand beyond the Pacific. The standards will need to be much stricter for WPAC than for ATL and EPAC. I'm still undecided about the Indian Ocean and SPAC. Storms in N IND are just so much worse than anywhere else just because of the poverty and the horrible population density. As for the southern Hemisphere, I just don't know what the parameters would be. They aren't well covered in the media and I don't know what would qualify as a stand-out storm down there. I do plan to open the door for Cyclone Catarina. I think you and I should set parameters for the Pacific and invite some of the other senior WP:TROP editors to join an inaugural caucus. We'll induct at least ten international storms and hold annual elections just like in the Atlantic, maybe with fewer getting in each year since historical record only goes back 63 years. -- §HurricaneERICarchive 18:16, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Remember, with 3,000 miles of coastline, the US is going to take plenty of big hits and I think I've been pretty fair. I haven't put all the retired names in there because I feel that just because a bunch of suits with heavy political agendas said, "Ooh, that was a bad one" doesn't mean a storm is a Hall-of-Famer. The criteria for being retired is much lower than the criteria for the HOF. A HOF storm is a storm that leaves such an impact that it echos through time; be it by killing 7,000 people or hitting Florida in February. And just because some storms aren't in the Hall now doesn't mean they won't ever get in. I certainly hope there are plenty more that should be in but aren't so I can keep doing this. Trust me, I know about Fran; my grandmother lived through it. But when there are still storms like Joan, Cleo and Hilda waiting to get in, storms like Fran take a back seat. After all, I wouldn't want to be US biased ;).

Okay good; we have six already <!-- --> Now the fun part begins. First of all, Ioke is not eligible for induction as the storm has to have two full seasons between it and the induction year. That's my fault, I forgot to direct you to the rules I set for the HOF, which are on my HOF page. As for the other four spots, how about we give a brief (a couple sentences) explanation as to why we feel that the other's nominees we left off should not be on the nominations list. For example, because I didn't pick John, Linda and Kenna, I would explain why I left them off. I'm open to suggestions. I do think that you forgot some of the historically destructive storms. You included several of them in the preliminary list you gave me earlier but did not include them in your top ten. I'm gonna have a rough case for 1975 but so are you with Kenna. It only killed 4 people and caused barely $100 million in damage. As for John; it's up there but I don't think it cracks the top ten. Maybe it undercuts 1975 or 1858 and I'll certainly give that some thought tomorrow. The longevity record should get it in eventually. Here's my thinking on Linda: Yes, that record is huge. But that record is all Linda has. If it weren't the strongest EPAC storm of all-time, then it would be scarcely notable. What happens if a future storm breaks Linda's record. Then Linda's place in HOF is meaningless. Right or wrong, that's why I left it off. There may be others we're missing but I can't think of any. Hurricane Hattie may not have killed 500 people like orignally thought, but it still got a plaque and was plenty deserving of it. I doubt the 500 figure for Tara is that far off. In fact I think the 430 number given in the List of notable tropical cyclones is more accurate and plenty deserving of the Hall. NHC storm wallets[edit]
Cash depository indeed. Check out these sat photos of Tropical Storm Anna...from 1969! These were taken barely a week after the forecasters were camped out around the TV watching Neil and Buzz walk on the moon. Unfortunately they don't have any of the other storms from that year in the wallets (we already have Camille's though). Surely there's more storms from that year out there; we just haven't found them. I'll keep looking for more goodies from other years. The infobox[edit]
I might work on the infobox again. There's no way many WPTC articles could be made FA with the current templates in use, and it seems that no one has done anything yet to fix that situation. Anyway, here're the colors no one bothered to look at before reverting everything (minus a couple that were too similar) [1]. Potapych (talk) 02:44, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
- The last column has the original colors, and the JMA column has ones added later (hence the pink color which sticks out like a sore thumb). Obviously the newer ones on the left side are consistent with the original ones. What I most strongly object to currently is the way the Australian categories are assigned. - Okay, well I liked the names because sometimes you will have two similar values, but one is 10-minute and one is 1-minute. The storm might be a tropical depression in both, so it will say "Tropical depression" in both rows, maybe with links to different pages. It is kind of weird to have both stacked together, so I put names and numbers to make them look different. Of course I have been making the 1-minute speed optional, so omitting that info would make the row disappear. Still, it will no longer say what the intensity is in SSHS. I am going to try it without the names, however.
- ETA, if you want to see an example, go this page, change the 10-minute value to 45, and hit preview. The small infobox is based on this, so it will do the same thing.

- For your convenience we can discuss the item here. Well, the source as a source doesn't get invalide only because it isn't available for anyone anywhere for free. And, for people with Lexis-Nexis accounts it can be verified. However, I have not and don't know how it works – so I am asking naïvely: Could the source be more specific described, for ex. News report from June 6, 1982 isn't very exactly; I guess AP or Reuters issued hundreds of news reports that day. Nowadays they provide a title line for each newspaper report – but did they then? Further, IMO it should be mentioned where/how the information was obtained. (Though I didn't look up wether the English templates Cite web/Cite news provide the possibility of entering such an information.) A possible solution might be to mention also a L/N reference number if any exists. But as I said, I have no clue how it works. For printed reports – as in the mentioned Washington Post article in one reference for ex. – the page number could be given, if available.
- BTW: Well written article, good work.
- The news report references are a common problem in the wikipedia, especially the English WP. Many editors include some sources from the website of their local cable news network's or from Yahoo News' AP feed and 30 or 60 days later they is gone (see for example the article about last years flood in the Middle West, the I-35W bridge disaster or any article written about battles in Iraq, Afghanistan or elsewhere). Webcitation.org might be a help, but looking at 2007 Pacific typhoon season's references list lets one scream. (I didn't check if the JMA's and JTWC's seasonal reports are already out but they surely will improve the situation because IMHO there's no need to refer each up-/downgrading on its own). --Matthiasb-DE (talk) 07:17, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
- This comment is on your page and on mine. Well, for all of the sources, it also provides the title, which narrows down the hundreds of reports to the one in specific I was using for the article. LexisNexis works by showing a list of articles by a specific search term. For Alberto, I typed in Alberto and limited it by dates. Then, I clicked on a story of interest. On the page, I don't see any ID. All that comes up is the publisher, the date it came out, the author, the title, the length, and then the story. For more recent storms, when we use AP stories from Yahoo News or such, we are usually able to find the same story by using the same title. Webcitation.org might be a good option for the future. Naomi's Rainfall[edit]
After reading Julian's comments on the article, I was thinking about how to incorporate the totals without needing to break the paragraph since a) the old way wasn't good writing (and was less of a sentense and more of a thesaurus on how to say "report"), and b) there is no HPC map for the hurricane. I was tossing the idea of either having a table in the section or realtering the flow of the section. Problem is, I have no idea how to make a decent table for such. Hurricane Archive has been under maintenance for a while and I am starting to question whether the links for those articles will last through a possible FAC (and Rambling Man's comments in the PR aren't helping that problem). Given your experience with FAs, how should I approach this? Should I keep the webpage links, or put sources that list just the paper and which page its on, so that maintenance doesn't throw the article's sources into disarray during a possible future run? Alright, I did add a few things from the previous article. For most of what I didn't add, the new article covers it, just with different wording. One thing which I don't think should be added is this:
Lili was a well-observed hurricane at its final landfall in Louisiana, as three mobile radars were deployed to the area of predicted landfall, including the National Severe Storms Laboratory's SMART Radar. These high-resolution systems complemented NOAA's fixed NEXRAD radars in Lake Charles and New Orleans. Several instrumented towers were also deployed in the path of the hurricane to provide other measurements.

Re: The Infobox[edit]
Switching from JMA to JTWC isn't a job for the templates. It's all up to the information provided (basin, 1-min winds, etc.). Anyway, I've added support for subtropical storms (in the Atlantic/East Pacific) and I have one question. Subtropical storms could be of any strength, so would it be correct to call it a "Category 1" subtropical storm?
The other thing I showed you was just a quirk found in a lot of these templates. It will be very prominent in many of the season articles because of the diversity of the storms. If someone creates an article of a tropical storm in the West Pacific, it will appear in that article.Potapych (talk) 03:18, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

Well, given that many of my projects are effectively halted due to THArchives, I can focus more on Kesiny with a few other articles (Fausto, Sudal, Toraji, and storms in the 2002 PHS). Right now, while I wait for THA to come back up (and up Naomi for FA status...even though I doubt it can get through), I might as well kickstart Kesiny and Fausto once I get back on my computer (I'm doing room cleaning). The Hurricane Archives go under some heavy scrutiny and maintenance...just to die. Now the site's been merged with the old Newspaper Archives, which provides papers only if you sign up for a plan. I've been kicked in the face often (my work appearing on other sites, sites stopping me midway on an article), but when THE MOST VITAL SITE for my work goes under...well, lets just say I have a flurry of words that must be heard...but the censors would be too overworked. In other words, now HALF of the articles I wanted to do go under, leaving scant few remaining. Unless this is a joke, I'm going to have to yank the GA stats under from Nina and Naomi (and drop Naomi from PR. Both articles were practically built on that site...Pauline and Rick too)...and I was SO...CLOSE...to getting my first FA. Any advice for me, I'm no longer thinking rationally. Like Lidia of 93 before it, Cristina may have been responsible (indirectly) for more damage than the NHC said: this time, $45 million to upwards of $70 million damage due to a thunderstorm outbreak over Arizona on July 14. Specifically, the damage comes from a microburst that hit Sky Harbor Airport. Alone, its not enough to say that Cristina had a role in this, but a document I salvaged [2] says that when Cristina's outer bands passed over the southern Gulf of California, it caused a surge of low-level moisture that reached southern Arizona and contributed to the development of these storms. However, two subsequent documents [3] (which is a double whammy on the part of the cyclone, calling it "Hurricane Christine") and [4] both say that the surge wasn't high enough to have a good chance of thunderstorm development.
