You mean the notices from November, 2011, posted on the Talk page for IP user 66.29.187.7? A downside of editing Wikipedia without creating an account is the IP address you access Wikipedia from has often been previously used by another person who may have created the prior edits. Regarding my Wiki activity

Hi Geoff,

I am a student taking a basic Communication writing course and had to move my article on the main space in order to receive credit for an assignment/allow my classmates to peer edit it. I understand that it is not yet an acceptable article and am continuing to work on it. It's due next Friday. Any way my page can last on the main page until my instructor grades it? Then I won't mind if it is reverted back to Sandbox.

I changed the title a couple times and cannot figure out how to delete the previous entries. Still trying to get the hang of Wiki. Chalbeis (talk) 01:37, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

  • Alas, it's out of my control how long the article may last given that it is being discussed at Articles for Deletion (AfD). Depending on responses, those can close after about 7 - 10 days, resulting in deletion or retention, depending on consensus among those participating in the AfD. I don't know the terms of your assignment, but it is possible for all editors to review/edit articles in sandboxes - they just need to be told where to look. Perhaps your professor will allow credit for a sandbox article-in-progress, but that's between the two of you. I agree that learning to use this thing of ours (Wikipedia) is difficult. I don't know what I would have done if I had been under a deadline to produce an article, instead of having the luxury of taking my time to build slowly in a sandbox. Again, don't give up!   • The how-to steps are listed in the Userfy article here: Userfication process. Simply put, use the "Move" button on your article to move it to your sandbox or a subpage of your user page and then tidy up the loose ends. If you like, I think I can do it for you, as any registered user has the "Move" button (it's under the drop down arrowhead to the right of the top of the page).   • It was already moved to your userspace by an administrator as its time for deletion had come up. I think my note on the deletion page helped avoid deletion as I suggested it be userfied in light of the school project. See the note from the administrator on your userpage: "I've closed the AFD discussion as delete but have userfied the article to User:Chalbeis/Food trends. --Ron Ritzman (talk) 00:24, 21 April 2012 (UTC)" Perhaps you can have it graded in situ or you can work on it further and try moving it back once it has enough references and looks more encyclopedic in form and content. hey mate,

in regards to Krishna Abhiskeh page. The .jpg file name is Krushna so the picture does not show up if it is named Krishna so I had to change it back to Krushna so that the picture file is actually recognized.

I've put the file link back. Part of the problem was that you were making your edits without an edit summary, so those of us who watch over articles for unexplained (and possibly unconstructive) changes could not see what you were trying to do. Adding an edit summary when making edits really helps as it explains to others what your edits are all about. Kalakanda

Kalakanda is the non-specific,generic name and the name still used in places other than Hindi speaking areas. Kalakand is specifically a Hindi/North Indian word. It is a derivative of the Sanskrit words kala and khanda (which the english word candy supposedly comes from): art and candy.

May I suggest discussing such changes on the article's Talk page, in order to seek some consensus among those editors who are interested in and knowledgeable about the gentleman about whom the article is written as well as the fine points of both Hindi and Sanskrit. I can't claim to be an expert on Mr. Abhishek, nor as to Hindi or Sanskrit. Citing reliable sources for your points is also essential. Miss interpretation of the movie "Rules of attraction"

Hello Glane 23,

This was actually not senseless at all. Watch the movie if you don't believe me ;D but throughout the movie several scenes do prove my point. Acutally the author of the Book Bret Easton Ellis did announce the his gay, at least the wikipedia article does state so. But this only confirmed my previous interpretations. Just think about it when watching the movie, youll see how often hints are given. for example when sean loses his errection during sex, saying he hadnt had sex sober in a long time, or his hate against women, where he uses them and doesnt care about the person at all, "letting them back with the bill" or simply going home to "jack off alone" Homosexuality is a main subject of the movie, so I dont see why this should be sensless at all. Later you can see both sean and paul lying in underwear in their room, while watching a lesbian porn, (a "homosexual" movie) Paul then turns of the tune and asks sean out for the party. I belive the movie was purposely left open to interpreter , but it does show the division of perception in every single characters life, and also of the viewer, which would explain why the author of the existing article did not seem to notice the obvious hints. There are many curious scenes with obvious subliminal tools, which have to be stated to understand the message of the movie. The missinterpretation of Sean is not the only thing that I noticed that are essential to understand the movie, but it was the one thing that i thought would be absurd to just let it uncontradicted. I believe this movie is way more complicated then this article on wiki indicates. the subjects are very profound, and not correctly stated.

I was concerned about your edits to the article The Rules of Attraction (film) because (a) there was no edit summary and (b) there were no citations to support your changes. The edit summary would have helped me understand what you were trying to do and I highly recommend that you complete a summary for your edits for that reason. Further, you should include inline citations to support the statements you added so that the article is verifiable from reliable sources. If you want to add back your changes, I'll leave them alone, as I think I understand that what you are trying to do is to improve the encyclopedia and that you are acting in good faith. You're referring to your edit to the article which I reverted. I notice that your other edits to the same also were also reverted by other Wikipedians. At best, you appeared to be testing the edit process, which you should do at the sandbox. At worst, you appeared to be deliberately defacing the article. Thanks for the note. It looked to me like the additions were sheering periously close to uncited negative material regarding living persons, along with other edits which appeared to be unambiguoous promotion, so without an edit summary to help me understand what was intended, I opted for removing it all. I have a strange note from the IP (above) and, complicating things further, another editor stepped in after you to remove essentially the same uncited material I had removed. Meanwhile, and finally, the IP appears to have speedied the article. I honestly don't know enough about the subject to know what to do with the article next, so I think my best course is to just stand back. And so it goes... Regards and thank you again. It looks like my edit comment didn't save for some reason. I removed the two additions as they were unsourced and had asked, in my not-saved edit comment, the editor to add sources within the article. They had added what appeared to be sources within their comment, but had not included the references in the article. Dr. McDowell, you must be referring to warnings posted on IP user 74.65.119.229's Talk page. I see that Orphan Wiki and I posted warnings about edits on that page in February, 2011. At the bottom of the page is this notice: "This is the discussion page for an IP user, identified by the user's numerical IP address. Some IP addresses change periodically, and may be shared by several users. If you are an IP user, you may create an account or log in to avoid future confusion with other IP users. Registering also hides your IP address." Accessing Wikipedia without logging on is what we call "IP access," meaning that the user is recorded as the IP address from which you accessed Wikipedia. ISPs often reassign IP addresses as users log on and log off their systems, so it is quite likely that you were "dynamically assigned" the IP address which had been used by someone else 2 years ago to make edits which resulted in the warnings. Well, the author of the image is credited on its Commons page [2] and it isn't necessary to add the image credit to the article. Smacks of self-promotion as most images attached to articles do not include a creator credit in their caption, because any reader can click on the image to view it with its upload data, including its source and creator. Doo Town Tasmania

The only change that I have ever made in reference to Doo Town was the misspelling of my fathers name. Due to our recent loss of him I felt that is was respectful to his memory that his name was Bill Eldridge who owned do us and do us too. If you are fine with disrespecting the dead then leave his name mispelt.

I am the granddaughter of the man who built Doo us and Doo us too the mispelling of his name broke my heart so soon after his death. As his father was the builder and his name being Bill Eldridge as well.

I am not ashamed to give my real name which is Julieann Eldridge. I spent a lot of my childhood in the area and those memory I love.

If it is in reference to me removing the name with the fxxx I found that name was disrespectful to the area and the people who started doo town would never of wanted that name there. My revert was of this edit, adding "Doo Fuck All" to the list of house names which was made January 9, 2013 by an IP user using the same IP as yours: 123.2.134.237. The edit I reverted didn't seem appropriate as it did not appear sourced to a verifiable reference. In point of fact, someone re-added the name of the house later and, when I double-checked the reference cited for the house names, I found that, sure enough, "Doo Fuck All" is one of the house names listed in the reference. All in all, the residents must be a grand lot of wowsers. The article today includes that house name. It is quite possible that someone other than you made that edit because it is not unusual for internet service providers to reassign IP addresses as users sign on and off the internet. Edits on the Page Fernando Muslera

Hello Glane23. I realised that you reverted the edits I have made on the page about Fernando Muslera to the old revision. I think that I made an error by not giving any citations about the information I have added and changed, even though what I did was mostly correcting grammar mistakes and adding some words which were missing in the sentences. I couldn't add citations because I'm not familiar with editing in Wikipedia but I can surely say that Muslera saved his first penalty for Galatasaray in the 2011-12 season against Mersin İdmanyurdu on 5 November 2011, not 2012. I will support this with http://www.transfermarkt.com.tr/tr/fernando-muslera/elfmeter/spieler_58088.html

If you look at the penalty statistics of the goalkeeper mentioned above, you will see that Muslera saved a penalty from Andre Moritz against Mersin İdmanyurdu on 5 November 2011. The information in the old revision is wrong. After I corrected it, it looked weird that information about 2011 was written after information about 2012, so i just cut that sentence about the 2011 penalty save and pasted it just above the information about the keeper's 2012 performances. What I edited was that. I couldn't add citations but if you can add the link above as a citation (if you are satisfied with the content of it of course) I will be very pleased :).

I won't be using this IP anymore. I will contact you with another IP in a couple of days, just in case you wish to reply to me. I will apply the changes I made again. There is no specification of who the mandola is given to, making it an incomplete sentence. Hermatite magnification

Hello,

Electron microscopes normally write their magnification in terms of thousands. There is absolutely no way that the image has a magnification of only 100x. Not even 10,000x. It must be 100,000x.

Referring to this reversion I did for an edit by IP User 14.202.198.201. You may be right, but the caption of the image, which is from Commons here, states, rightly or wrongly, "Hematite in Scanning Electron Microscope, magnification 100x." It was uploaded by Materialscientist and may I suggest that you discuss the caption and the magnification issue with that user on their Talk page over on Commons. I'm no physicist, but I do know that Wikipedia discourages original research. I'm sure you can clear it all up via a discussion with Materialscientist, whom I feel certain will be interested in hearing from you. Referring to this edit to Rhodesian Bush War. I couldn't tell if the edit was constructive largely because you made the change without leaving an edit summary explaining what you were doing. The original designation as a German journalist had been supported by this reference: "Eppel, Shari (26 March 2008). "Matabeleland: Its Struggle for National Legitimacy, and the Relevance of this in the 2008 Election" (PDF). Berlin: Heinrich Böll Foundation. Retrieved 9 December 2008." Unfortunately, that is now a dead link. I found the archived article and fixed the link in the article, however there is nothing in the referenced article itself to allow a reader to tell which characterization, journalist or "Zimbabwean Human Rights activist" is correct. The sources were not reliable. Please see the article on biographies of living people. Blogs are not considered reliable sources, especially with regard to biographies of living persons. Thanks for your prompt reply. I understand your point, especially if the blogs were based upon personal opinion, and rumour. But in this case, the blogs are simply reposting Tweets and other social media comments made by both Howell and Lester in relation to their sexuality. As WP:BLPSPS states 'Never use self-published sources – including but not limited to books, zines, websites, blogs, and tweets – as sources of material about a living person, unless written or published by the subject. My issues with using The Sun as a reference for the apparent chart-topping popularity of the chicken & mushroom pie go deeper than just the general unreliability of that particular tabloid. The link goes to an old article on The Sun's website which is annotated "Last Updated: 27th July 2007." But that report was actually published on page 35 of the The Sun on 29 January 2004. It was also based on a very small, uncontrolled - and thus not at all representative for the purposes of an encyclopedia - poll carried out by Kwik Save. There have been similar unscientific polls most years - for example, in 2001 steak & kidney was apparently the most popular (Brown, Annie (12 May 2001). "Pie study just half-baked". Daily Record. Glasgow. p. 28.); in 2002 Leeds was the pie-eating capital, and steak & kidney the favourite again ("Leeds tops for pies". The Belfast News Letter. Belfast. 24 August 2002. p. 9.). In 2010, chicken & mushroom takes a dive and the Evening Telegraph informs us that plain steak pie tops the chart, followed by steak & kidney, minced beef & onion and finally chicken & mushroom (Jackson, David (26 January 2010). "Comeback for the humble British pie". Evening Telegraph. Kettering.). Oh, and based on sales, Tesco reckoned Leicester was the pie-eating capital... So the reference is 9 years old, unreliable due to the nature of the evidence gathering and probably unreliable due to the variation seen year by year anyway. G'day, mate! I was concerned about the unsourced and potentially libelous statements wherein violations of laws were alleged. Those are serious charges. If you have reliable sources that you can reference for your statements, then you can report what the sources themselves report, but in a neutral point of view. Read, for example, how the New York Times reported the charges brought again JPMorgan Chase which it recently settled, just for one illustration. My friend, I have to tell you this isn't worth the potential trouble it can cause. My recommendation is just to leave it lie. I hope you read the article on reliable sources I mentioned earlier. You also need to read about Wikipedia's prohibition of original research as a source for references for facts in its articles. That is what correspondence between yourself and the company would be. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a crusade. However much you have been wronged, this isn't the place to redress wrongs. If you can find articles published about the subject in edited newspapers, for example the New York Times or a national periodical such as Time, just to give two examples, then those might be appropriate sources. But not anecdotes from other players or yourself which you gather. You might try a Google News search, for example. My advice is to take a deep breath (or two), count to 100 and step back from the brink. If you want to take legal action yourself, alone or in in concert with others, then I highly recommend that you consult a lawyer and, if appropriate, seek redress in the courts. I have already read the applicable laws; it's clear-cut that the ones jagex has broken are numerous and severe. The risks for me are nonexistent; jagex has already acknowledged on multiple occasions their awareness that they would be at an utter loss in a court case on the matter and pursuing me for libel is something they outright won't do because of this, not to mention that they wouldn't win such a suit. Preferably, I would like to resolve the issue without the trouble of legal intervention, but with the law so overwhelmingly on my side, I am by no means apprehensive of doing so if all else fails. I'm merely trying to help people who may be harmed by their illegal practices. Referring to Oxford spelling. I reverted your addition of language in the lede ("Oxford spelling is best known for its preference for the suffix ‑ize rather than -ise.") where essentially the same language is in the first sentence of the second section: "Oxford spelling can be recognized by its use of the suffix ‑ize instead of -ise: organization, privatize and recognizable instead of organisation, privatise and recognisable." Referring to this edit to Everyday Edisons, by an IP user. The additions you refer to lacked reliable sources, which is particularly important for negative statements about an existing organization. Assuming you are the IP editor, your edit summary also made it clear that you were basing your addition, at least in part, on original research which is contrary to Wikipedia's guidelines. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a forum or soapbox for advocacy, however well intentioned. If you can find reliable sources for your additions, then by all means add the facts, but use neutral language, citing your third-party, published sources. Geoff, I have spoken with other students. Visual History is a very serious article. The main question is the translation. It would be a real mistake to delete this article: imagine, if wikipedia was used in the 1930s, you had deleted the Ecole des Annales article, just because the translation was bad? English speaking users of our Free Encyclopedia must really know about these news researches for a global history of images. Prince Edward County, Ontario - Notable residents page

Actually, Lorne Bill Bentley is a notable resident and currently runs the Leadership department advising the Department of National Defence and the Government of Canada for the past 40 years. He was born and raised in Crofton (prince edward county) and received the Governer Generals award for his military service (highest honour available) . He still lives in Prince Edward County to this day. The list of people on there also don't seem very "constructive"...a chef without a functioning restaurant? Come on. I am trying to volunteer my time by removing information that has NO BASIS OR REFERENCE. It is completely illogical to ask a person to provide reference for why something is inaccurate if the person saying it has no evidence. In the logical world, when someone presents information, they provide sources which back up or verify the information. Why the sudden need to moderate? Obviously no one was moderately the article when it was written. But we all know its not about that. Wikipedia wouldn't have 4,391,000+ articles if people could remove information with little to no evidence to support them. It's all about the numbers. Make it very easy for any asshole to write any article about anything and keep it if no one complains. One more on the ticker for wikipedia. Someone tries to remove it and make it difficult as can be. I would call you a corporate tool but you're not even that... More like a volunteer tool.

Sallallahu alaihi wassallam after Prophet Muhammad's name

I just edited a page here on wikipedia and wrote Sallalahu alaihi wassallam which means "peace be upon him" after prophet Muhammad's name. We should say that after we take his name in order to bless and honor the holy prophet. Muslims are commanded to salute the prophet whenever they take his name and this is also mentioned in a Quranic verse to do so ( al-Ahzab 33:56 Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [ Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [ Allah to grant him] peace.).So i just wrote "sallalahu alaihi wasallam" there so that muslims do not miss saying that. And i think even for those who are not muslims and who dont follow quran, its a basic ethic to honor the prophet and there is no harm in honoring Muhammad(sallallhu alaihi wasallam) for anyone. With respect, please see the guideline for honorifics as to the Prophet found in the Wikipedia Manual of Style. The guideline is to remove the honorifics. As more fully discussed in the article Muhammad in Islam, the names and titles of praise are many. In this case, the Facebook exception does not appear to apply for a number of reasons, including the fact that the statement involves claims by third parties, the fact that the statement may be construed as self-serving and that there can be doubts as to its authenticity. What you want to look for is a similar statement to a journalist reported in an edited publication, which could include, just by way of example, Rolling Stone, The New York Times, a video interview on an edited news program, etc., as described in the article on verifiability. Reversion/undone-Reversion on Wormholes in fiction

Earlier today, an anonymous user undid an edit of mine to Wormholes in fiction. You reverted that edit, but then undid your reversion. I am curious as to your reasoning for undoing your reversion, a reversion I had planned to do myself. Mainly, I was going to revert his edit, because he did it anonymously. Otherwise I would have discussed it with him to attempt to find some more satisfactory solution. Since he gave no such opportunity, I will instead discuss it with you.:)

The history:

  • In the past, some user or admin, as mentioned on the talk page, decided that the White holes in fiction article was too small. He therefore decided that White Holes were a "special case" of Wormhole, and that the WHIF article should be merged into Wormholes in fiction.
  • I later created a more structured way to present the White Hole information, and included the paragraph at the top of the White holes in fiction section which is under debate.
  • Not wanting to revert the earlier decision to class white holes as wormhole analogs (as it may have been a consensus act), I never the less wanted to provide some explanation. I did that by writing "Some consider^ White Holes to be a special class of Wormhole.." I provided a footnote paragraph, explaining who the "some" were, and directing readers to the talk page. I did that, I believed, consistently with suggestions for not linking to talk pages (Ex: the final comment on this proposal).

I am thinking that maybe I should remove the "some consider" idea, changing the paragraph to something like "White holes may be considered a special class of Wormhole", and just tag it with Citation needed or the like.

It's not your error but mine in neglecting to include a reference for adding this word to the list of synonyms for "chickpea." I'm working from a near-native knowledge of Yiddish, having spent most of my childhood in a Yiddish-speaking household, and wasn't aware that a reference is required for everything. The word in question is translated into both Hebrew and English as the generic "peas." although I've never encountered its use for anything but chickpeas). In any case, here goes:

No problem - it was a new one to me. Looking about, I found a recipe and description in a blog post, which isn't a reliable source for Wikipedia purposes, but is was helpful to me. And yes, facts in the aricles should have citations to reliable sources. G'day! You're talking about this edit in which I reverted unconstructive additions to the article made by someone using the IP address 2.101.103.136. As the note at the bottom of the Talk page for that IP user reflects: "This is the discussion page for an IP user, identified by the user's numerical IP address. Some IP addresses change periodically, and may be shared by several users. If you are an IP user, you may create an account or log in to avoid future confusion with other IP users. Registering also hides your IP address." When you access Wikipedia without using an account, the system records the IP address used for that moment's access. It is very common for internet service providers to reassign IP addresses as users login and logoff the system. Thus, the edits were probably made by someone else entirely. As the note on the Talk page states, you can avoid these irrelevant notices by creating an account. Since the shoe doesn't fit, you need not wear it. Yes, Geoff, I am an amateur at this but I was reading about Deepcut and noticed that Pte. Geoff Gray was said to be from Hackney, whereas I believe he is from Seaham, County Durham. His parents have been campaigning for a long time and, as I live locally to Seaham, I have been aware of this. Perhaps you could correct the Hackney entry fro me. I notice the Daily Mail says Hackney but if you search for Pt. Geoff Gray Seaham you may agree with me. About the article Princess Royal Barracks, Deepcut. Looks like you just need a little help with citations as you seem to be correct as to Pt. Gray's home. I did find a BBC story which identified Pt. Gray as from Seaham and I've added the reference and edited the article accordingly. Hello Geoff! If it was me who deleted text from this article, I apologize profusely - I would never make a change like that before asking. Even if I did decide to go ahead with it, I would definitely put a comment there.

However, are you sure it was me? (I'd like to make sure my Wikipedia user account hasn't been compromised.) I have no recollection of ever looking at this article, let alone changing it. I wonder if it could possibly have happened when I was cleaning my keyboard or something? Seems very unlikely but... hey... it's computers(!).

Since I first discovered Wikipedia I don't believe I've posted more than a few changes - and even those were probably just grammatical clarifications. (I once thought of editing the Fruitarianism article - cutting stuff out which I thought was beyond the scope... but once I saw over 30 pages of religious, political & philosophical discussions... I thought better of it! ;)

Lithuania Eurovision National Final

Hi Geoff,

I was wondering why you are against having links on the wiki page for the Lithuanian Eurovision National Final to the Voting Platform in which people can choose the song they want to be used in the contest. I find that this way people who read that wiki page (and are therefore interested in the national final) would like to have an easy way to find the voting site, so that they can cast their vote and follow which song is leading. The website is the legit link to the LRT platform.
