Rankin Inlet

Please be advised that I am not editing the Rankin Inlet with the intention of vandalizing the information. I come originally from the community, and am 100% confident that the Inuktitut way of spelling the name of the community is a complete error (please look further into this before you decide to keep it as kangiqiniq). Rankin Inlet's Inuktitut name is pronounced with a "th" (also, I should point out that the actual syllabic way of writing it is correct in the Rankin Inlet wikipedia site, BUT the roman orthographic way of spelling is completely wrong). For example, I had just cited a scholarly article and was adding more such content. Sufficient time of over a year seems to have elapsed for this topic to have matured and more sources to accumulate. Weather IP

Hello, saw you reverting addition of weather data by 174.117.71.185 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) to Helsinki. I have earlier reverted unexplained alterations to weather data by anonymous IP in the same article (can't remember if the same IP though.) This user anyway has multiple warnings on his talk page. Probably was the same person. The problem is that while they sometimes add material that doesn't match the source or conflicts with the countries weather office, they also add material that wasn't in the article. Hello, and thank you for editing my article. I've been wondering when someone might find the time to improve my work. Hi. All images must be released under a Creative Commons License. For the most part images on websites are copyright of the sites owner. This includes sites that don't have a copyright notice. The site must state that the image has been released under licence compatible with Wikipedia. Now if you are in contact with Zacharias Kunuk then it might be easiest to ask him for a picture. There is some good information about that at Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission and Wikipedia:Contact us/Photo submission. You would need to explain that the image would be available not only on Wikipedia but anywhere on or off the internet including places that want to make money. Notice how nearly all the edits and edit summaries are similar, as well as the repeated edit-warring on Qizilbash, Ismail I, Safavid dynasty, Muhammad al-Bukhari articles.

I strongly believe that they are all the same person. While I try to revert the vandalism, keeping up is difficult, and I am not sure if it is wise to ask for all the pages they edit to be protected/semi-protected. What would be the appropriate next step ?! I have added a few warning to the user pages, but they are ignored, or the warnings are simply blanked. Thank you for your time. Are you aware of any "_____ in popular culture" articles that have been singled out as being of particularly good quality? For the most part, at least in my experience, such articles are generally a mess of un- or poorly-referenced material, trivia, and speculation. But, this is not necessarily so in all cases. Has any such article ever made it to FA or GA status? I ask not out of mere curiosity, but because I am working on such an article, and I am looking for some good examples to use as a guide. Canadian Forces Base North Bay

Thanks for the remarks. Please note: our page was put together and being amended by people who (a) had never served at our base, and (b) who couldn't be bothered contacting us either for information or to confirm the accuracy of what they were writing. Consequently it was a dog's breakfast of omissions and inaccurate data, that reflected badly on our base. Our command and senior staff were unhappy, to say the least. In 2011 we began a wholesale re-write of the page. It has taken time primarily because we have had other military duties and tasks that demanded our attention, but we have almost finished the text. Meantime, regarding images, we have been gathering and sorting photos and graphics for the page from our archives, and shall be inserting them as soon as possible.

The Underground Complex section is lengthy because of its unique status, the only facility of its type in Canada and NORAD. The so-called "Diefenbunkers" pale in comparison, and were never used by the politicians they were meant to protect. In contrast, the Underground Complex was used 24/7 for air defence from the moment it officially opened, and is 15 times deeper underground, designed to survive a nuclear blast approximately 270 times the destructive force of the bomb that flattened Hiroshima -- a blast that would destroy a "Diefenbunker". The Cheyenne Mountain Complex, NORAD's other sub-surface facility, functioned as nerve center for all of the command; our Underground Complex was the only subterranean regional air defence centre in NORAD. Even Alaska's air defence centre, across from the Soviet Union, was situated above ground. Despite this uniqueness, the Underground Complex is not described in any public book or similar publication, Canadian or foreign, and descriptions on Internet sites are haphazard and incomplete. (For example, the book "Cold War Secret Nuclear Bunkers", by N.J. McCamley, purporting to be the most quote comprehensive description unquote of British and North America subterranean sites, excludes the complex.) Therefore, since we get numerous requests for information about the complex, from school kids to the media, we have provided more detail than usual on a Wikipedia page about the Underground Complex.

Incidentally, you de-capitalized Main Installation on our page -- this is the correct title for the air defence operations half of the complex, thus its initials are capitalized. Just as Power Cavern is the title for the life support half. We appreciate your input -- with regards to specific and technical aspects on our page such as this we request that you contact us before making a change, to confirm. If we are, indeed, in error we are glad to have the 'heads up'.

CFB North Bay follow on to your remarks

Hello. Regarding "we": I am the person writing the page, on behalf of the base, as its Wing Heritage Officer. Since 1998 all of Canada's air force bases have a Wing Heritage Officer on their staffs, a person with a background in each base's field of operations. Mine is NORAD and Canadian air defence (over 25 years' experience). The Wing Heritage Officer at CFB Greenwood, Nova Scotia, has a background in maritime patrol. Et cetera. Our assignment is to represent our respective air force history and heritage to the public, media and the military. Ergo the Wikipedia page fell under my purview. "We" comes into play, because I also use the resources and consult/coordinate with the staff of our base museum, a separate entity from the Wing Heritage Office. However, I am the guy doing the writing. The advantages to this procedure for re-writing are the information provided on the page is correct; I have access to references, files and publications that the public is not aware of, for data for the page; and I have vast personal experience in the subject matter, meaning I understand the subject matter in explicit detail, thus ensure its accuracy. This procedure also ensures the Wikipedia page is correct in accordance with Wikipedia standards. As stated in my original comments, our base's command and senior staff had finally had enough of our base's history and description being presented to the public via Wikipedia by people who had no knowledge of the base. So we -- in this case the base -- shall do whatever is necessary, in accordance with Wikipedia rules and regs, making adjustments wherever necessary upon advice from people like yourself, to produce a proper, factual page.

Regarding the images I intend to use, they are all CFB North Bay, Department of National Defence and Library & Archives of Canada photos. Each image will be annotated with a property caption. An example strictly to illustrate: "Tunnel entrance from the City of North Bay into the NORAD Underground Complex, Department of National Defence photo PCN4728". Therefore copyright in these circumstances is not a problem, since the images are in the public domain. The only outside sources I might elect to use are the city newspaper, The North Bay Nugget, and the city's museum, if their archives have something of value. In this case, the base would obtain permission before inserting their image(s) on our Wikipedia page.

As for IFSS CZNB, yes they do indeed work out of our site, as Arctic Radio. I have made a note to include them on our page.

CAVOK

I couldn't find the ICAO standards anywhere online - that ref seems to be a Norwegian one, which may or may not be in line with ICAO. In any case, the CAVOK in the METAR section (that says "Clouds And Visibility") references a wiktionary entry that says "Ceiling And Visibility" - a direct contradiction. One or t'other should be changed. With regards to use in a METAR, I can't recall (seems like ages since we've actually had CAVOK weather)
P.S. Cumulonimbi? May be technically correct, but it's not like anyone actually uses it - how about cumulonimbus clouds...?

Stop changing the page. You are using a source to cite Ahmadi beliefs, a source which has no mention of Ahmadis. I am introducing a source from the prelimnary website of the Ahmadiyya Community to go along with the rel belief of Ahmadis on the subject matter. Talk: Prime Minister of Canada - Ministerial Infoboxes

Hi CambridgeBayWeather. I am the user who changed the infoboxes on various political articles to the standardized template. I would like to know if you support or oppose this move, because on the talk page, there are four people (including me) who do support it, and one (Miesianiacal) who does not. If you have the time, you may want to read the talk page discussion, but it is long so I will also provide my reasons (and the reasons of others) to implement the change here.

Here they are (my reasons):

Here are my reasons why I think we should change the infobox:

1. Every political infobox on the English Wikipedia uses it

2. They look outdated, and the one I want to replace it with looks (in my opinion) much cleaner

3. It is the standard infobox for all politicians, why does Canada have to be different?

Here are some examples of the infoboxes used across the English Wikipedia:

3. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minister_for_Foreign_Affairs_%28Australia%29

6. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President_of_the_People%27s_Republic_of_China

And those are just some. Every political infobox is the same.

I am certain that the most used infobox template is the one I am proposing. If you look at various world leaders, (not monarchs) they all use the new template except Australia, New Zealand and Canada (I did change Australia and New Zealand and so far they seem to be okay with it). You can see what I am saying by looking at this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_current_heads_of_state_and_government. The monarchs are the only one with the old template.

And here are other peoples' reasons:

1. "I might be commenting too late, but I think Infobox Political post is better. I see no need to colour code the ministries, and it does produce a CONTRAST issue. Infobox Political post looks more how an infobox should look, and includes fields for an emblem, and incumbent since. I think we should move to this to be consistent, and get rid of these silly colours." -117Avenue

2. "I think that being standardized provides more atheistic benefit than looking nicer.. In my opinion, the default should be standardized infoboxes and that we should only use a different one if (1) the standardized one lacks a feature that would provide important encyclopedic information for Canada, and (2) that feature cannot be or won't be implemented in the standardized template." —Arctic Gnome

3. I do like the new layout, because I am not a fan of the to color lines under the title "Prime Minister of Canada", as the contrast does not meet our basic standers for color contrasts (My wife is color blind and she say's she sees no words in the 2 colored strips (see WP:CONTRAST). -Moxy

MY MAIN ARGUMENT: CONSISTENCY

I've already changed the infoboxes for the Australian prime minister and the New Zealand prime minister, and people seem to be fine with the change. The Cabinet of Australia already has been updated to the new infobox by someone else a long time ago, and the New Zealand Cabinet doesn't have any infoboxes. The rest of the heads of state and government ALL accross Wikipedia (not including the monarchs, which I DO NOT want to change because they are not political figures), already have the same infobox, which is the new one I am proposing. The only infoboxes that need to be changed are that of the Cabinet of Canada and the prime minister of Canada. So, the only changes that would be made would be to Canadian political offices, so they match the political offices all across Wikipedia. The change ONLY applies to Canada, no one else.

MSU Interview

Dear CambridgeBayWeather,


My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.


So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

As I tried to explain here for the third time, it's introduction of verifiably false content. Whether it's deliberate or there's a competence problem, I don't know, but it has become quite disruptive; the latest revert slipped by me and sat there for six days. Anyway, after noticing you had already issued a final warning (two weeks after the user was blocked) for a similar offense, I thought I'd drop in and leave you a note. I just know if I blocked them I'll be spending too much time at WP:ANI and it interferes with editing. If they pick up where they left off when their block expires, what's your suggestion? While their actions at Islam in Denmark do constitute vandalism per policy, I don't feel comfortable endlessly reverting the same thing. (Anyone who doesn't look carefully might mistake it for a content dispute.) Btw, I've spot-checked a few of their other edits and found some ostensibly constructive ones, and I don't know if it's worth the effort of combing through them more carefully. That's the article they were edit warring on yesterday and I wanted that stopped. By the way the temperature is supposed to be between −29 and −36 °C (−20 and −33 °F), Cambridge Bay weather, so yesterdays temperature wasn't too bad. I'm sorry for my change which appeared to be incorrect. I had assumed the quotation was a translated quotation. And I thought by translating Allah to God the quote would be more in line with the rest of the article. I hope you'll believe me when I say my intention was sincere.

Question about Reverting Edits

On Feb 28 and 29 a number of edits were done to the articles for many small airports in eastern Canada, putting them in the categories of "Buildings and structures in xxxx county". This doesn't seem to me to be appropriate, but I didn't like to just roll back a bunch of changes by one particular user without letting him know, so I put a query on his talk page, which he has not yet responded to. I wouldn't think that even a major airport with a large terminal should be listed under a building/structure category, since the terminal is simply supporting infrastructure for the airport and serves no purpose on its own. In many of the cases in question, however, there is simply a small house (barely larger than a shed) - hardly a noteworthy structure. I am unsure of Wiki etiquette in this case - is it okay for me to just go ahead and revert these changes? HiFlyChick (talk) 00:46, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

I still maintain that adding airports at random because there is any building on the property does not make sense - the category then becomes useless/meaningless. If I am searching for historic buildings or structures of significance, I am not interested in the old shack that sits on a tiny airport in the middle of nowhere. For airports fitting this category and with which I am personally familiar (i.e. I have flown in to them), is it okay if I remove them from the buildings/structures category, or would you prefer I let it be? Ethnic groups by pop.

Hi CBW. If it's not a bother, could you perhaps have a look at the list of ethnic groups by population article? A user has added some bizarre, pov material that attempts to subjectively classify individual ethnic groups according to racial categories, such as "Mongoloid" or "Capoid" (e.g. [1]). This is despite the fact that the article was originally about and reserved specifically for population data on ethnic groups, not the separate topic of races. The main list of ethnic groups page doesn't discuss racial categories either. I've tried to explain this to the user via edit summaries and here, but to no apparent effect. There's also an anonymous IP that, aside from the race-related pov, keeps removing otherwise relevant population data on North Africans (c.f. [2]). Hiya,

I noticed that you protected the article: List of ethnic groups by population. Could you please correct an inaccuracy added during the IP edit wars? The source used to cite the number of Russians clearly states 150 million (which is the number used for the Russians article as well as other related articles.) This puts it in a tie for 3rd place with Germans.

The title of the source itself is translated as "There are 150 million of us, but it could have been bigger." and you could use Google translate to confirm.

Hi CambridgeBayWeather! Thank you very much for your welcome. I just started looking at adding some things, mostly photo's to the Arctic communities pages. I must admit that after reading some of the help information, I'm sadly behind in this kind of data entry. I see that it must have been you that moved my photo's in the Arctic Bay section. I was planning on adding more photo's of the town and airport so that was when I discovered creating the Gallery section. I'll have to start looking at other places to see how folks add things. I believe that we have chatted before on the Panoramio site which I have been able to upload over a thousand photo's of which many are in the arctic. One question is that it appears any copyright over the photo's are null when adding to Wiki. Is this correct or am I missing something? Are you still up in the North? Good day! I added some photo's on the Qikiqtarjuaq page and couldn't figure out how to lay out the pictures very well. Thought you could give me a hand. I'll be slowly adding photo's of all the communities that I visit from time to time. Last year was exceptional and spent almost a month flying the arctic. It was great to be back! Jagermeister cocktail additions

Hi,

I noticed that you disapprove of YouTube being a suitable source of information, despite that page and others using video footage as references. In your view, how is the inventor of something less credible than a 3rd party reference from somewhere else? I'm genuinely interested as to why those additions to the page are unacceptable when previous additions remain.

Having taken on-board your view that Youtube is not a notable source of varification, the additions to the cocktails were verified on drinkswap.com and have received votes from people using that website. Drinkswap was used in the last addition to the Jagermeister cocktail section made on "22:32, 2 May 2012‎" though you clearly did not check the links before making your changes again. I would kindly ask that you don't change things to how you see them fit when people have made an effort to actually cite things "correctly" and, now, having done so using multiple sources. If both "Dr. Morganmeister" and "Dr. Cockmeister" are googled, Drinkswap is the first thing to come up in the search for them.

Most online drinks websites work from user-generated contributions. Drinkswap.com, Drinksmixer.com, Drinknation.com... the list goes on. Each cocktail googled brings up the same sites and they are all featured on the Jägermeister page. Any objection you have to the sources I have used with my additions raise the same problem as each drink on there has been submitted to another website by another user at some point. Thank you for your recent comment on my talk page. May I respectfully explain the first issue you raised, and may I ask a question on the second issue you discussed.
I'm not engaging in an edit war. As I clearly indicated in my edit summary, I posted the revision because I'm taking the article to WP:ANEW, to complain of an edit war on the article. I fully expected my edit to be reverted immediately, because that's exactly what I intend to complain about in my WP:ANEW report.
Regarding the second issue in your comment on my talk page: Are you sure that WP:PAIC#Foreign-language_quotations does not apply to my translating a source? This WP policy says: "Quotations from foreign-language sources should appear in translation. Quotations that are translations should be explicitly distinguished from those that are not. Indicate the original source of a translation (if it is available, and not first published within Wikipedia), and the original language (if that is not clear from the context). If the original, untranslated text is available, provide a reference for it or include it, as appropriate."
Can you please explain how this policy does not apply to my translating a source?
As I indicated previously regarding the other WP policy, Wikipedia:Translation, yes, I agree it does not apply directly to my translating a source, because WP:Translation is focused on the translation of foreign-language WP articles into the English WP; it does not discuss the translation of foreign-language sources into English. However, as I wrote previously, WP:Translation is the only other WP policy I could find on translations (in addition to WP policy on Foreign-language quotations). WP:Translation even encourages students to work on translating foreign-language WP articles into English as student projects. (However, as I said before, translating foreign-language WP articles is not the same as translating foreign-language sources.) In other words, from both WP policy on foreign-language translations and WP:Translation, it seems that WP policies call for the community to assume good faith in its editors when it comes to translations from foreign languages into English.
Are you indicating that my conclusion that WP calls for assuming good faith in WP editors when it comes to translations is incorrect? Could you please explain.
As I wrote previously, I currently don't see a problem with using a WP talk page as the physical location to store the translation. (If I'm wrong on this, please let me know.) One of the editors on the talk page of resource-based economy repeatedly claimed that because I've stored the translation on a WP talk page, then the translation is a WP article, and WP articles cannot be used as sources. I explained in response that storing a (translation) of a source on a WP talk page does not turn the source into a WP article, and that the only issue of importance is the reliability and quality of the source (and verifiability, etc.), not the source's physical storage location. Again, if WP policies indicate that I'm wrong on this, could you please explain?
I'm puzzled. If both WP policies above don't apply to my translating a source, then which WP policy does apply?
I'm relatively new to WP and thus am relying on much more experienced and savvy users, like yourself, to provide necessary guidance and insights.

It seems that based on WP policy on Foreign-language quotations), I can still use the original (foreign-language) sources to support my WP article edits, as long as I provide translations of quotations of the specific (foreign-language) sentences or paragraphs I'm using in support of my WP edits? Is that a correct assumption? (Of course, I understand that I'll also need to fully abide by the other requirements of the WP policy such as explicitly distinguishing quotations that are translations from those that are not, indicating the original source of a translation and the original language, and providing a reference to the original, untranslated text.)
I'm grateful for your feedback, insights and guidance. I'm learning a lot from you.

Unionville, Ontario

Thanks for the feedback. I understand that you don't want to semi-protect the talk page, but can we at least semi-protect the main Unionville page - or have you already done so? This is to ensure that only identifiable individuals make changes to it - we don't know if the anonymous IPs are high-school kids larking around, or real experts!

Re the apparent conflict between my 2 comments about the UVA, I have learned a bit more since, and it turns out that there is no "official" position right now, as Unionville is a district that has very fuzzy boundaries - and it also has no organizational status, except in the hearts of the residents... and a very checkered history! I have just been told that probably our Historical Society (UHS) is the only organ that should speak on this, and they currently "don't have a lot of resources to start any projects". I don't think anyone gains or loses by describing the district boundaries, except in terms of pride :-), so I can't see there being any COI issues. Even our local politicos and local newspaper are confused! I had thought that I could give a definitive citation, but apparently this will not be possible. The present situation is that on Mon., Wed. and Fri., the boundaries are x and y; on Tues., Thurs. and Sat., the boundaries are w and z - I believe that if Wikipedia is to act as an encyclopedia, this is not acceptable. This must happen occasionally - what does WP do in these cases? Or should I just draft some weasel-words that nobody can disagree with?

So ideally I would like to protect the page for now, wait for the Historical Society to come up with the best description, update it, and then semi-protect it from then on, so that people who are not willing to identify themselves are prevented from making endless back and forth changes. I have reversed the change out as vandalism, but I am worried that the war is starting up again. A member of the Unionville Historical Society and myself have cleaned up the article significantly, and are still working on it, and we really do not want unregistered, anonymous ignorami confusing the issue. We had also put in more accurate statements explaining why there are differing views about the limits, etc., of our town, and trying to give a balanced view, but the said person obviously couldn't be bothered to read this.

I do not wish to spend time every day backing out changes, so I would like to know whether a) we can get permanent semi-protected status, or b) block these users as vandals, or c) somehow force them to register...? Hi, this is a longshot but here goes anyway. Back in 2010 you made this reversion to this article with an edit summary saying it was a copyvio. This week another editor reinstated the version you said was copyvio so I reverted it again and there is now a discussion about whether it is a copyvio or not. Deleting my wikipedia

I was not making a clan. I actually took the time to study players of the Kid Icarus Uprising game and to post them for their skills within a section of Kid Icarus Uprising. It is a shame how people ruin others artwork when the enforcer knows no true motive behind it. You deleted my page about KSIOlajidebt, and I was wondering how I could improve the article to make it more relevant. I included a reference and linked other Wikipedia pages from the page. I would like to write more pages and some constructive feedback regarding this page would be fantastic.

I believe KSI has a high enough profile to be featured on Wikipedia, especially as other YouTube personaities, such as Shane Dawson, have a page. KSI is one of the fastest growing YouTube users of all time and it would be interesting to have a history of his YouTube career documented on one page. He is more recognisable than a lot of UK personalities who have a Wikipedia article written about them.
