Band Contest Sources[edit]

I don't have much time to work on this article right now, however I found the above sources if someone else wants to work them into the article. Road Wizard (talk) 20:21, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed name change[edit]

Whitsuntide was an ecclesisiastical holiday in the whole of the country but as the festivities died out elsewhere it grew in importance in the manufacturing towns of the north west. Processions were also held in Lancaster. Traditionally the Whit walks in Manchester were on Monday for the Anglicans and Friday for the Catholics. I do have a number of newspaper references for all this. Can I suggest that the scope of this article is expanded and the name is changed to something like "Whitsuntide festivities in the north west of England" or something similar? Richerman (talk) 23:47, 7 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

How about Whit walks. Lots of towns in Greater Manchester had walking days, not only on the Monday or Friday, Tyldesley had Whit walks on Sunday. I know there were walks in Wigan, Leigh, Atherton and Bolton. All these walks were accompanied by the local brass & silver bands and sunshine (mostly) as far as I can remember) Now I think about it, the Band competitions could make one article and the original walks another, perhaps --J3Mrs (talk) 15:50, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The days are definitely not fixed. Some places in Saddleworth had Whit walks on Sunday and the following Friday. Road Wizard (talk) 18:36, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That's right. I have a newspaper reference from 1845 when the walks in Manchester were on Whit Monday. Richerman (talk) 19:01, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Manchester walks[edit]

In recent times the Anglican and Roman Catholic processions have taken place on different days in the week.[citation needed][1][2] Whitwalk search The above search produced a number of articles on the Anglican processions but no recent ones for the Roman Catholic ones. Please add if you know of any.--Felix Folio Secundus (talk) 08:41, 14 April 2010 (UTC) P.S. "Traditionally the Whit walks in Manchester were on Monday for the Anglicans and Friday for the Catholics.
