2020 Series License Plate Format[edit]

Although the 2020 series has been described as random, it is in fact not random at all. The American License Plate Colectors Association's PLATES magazine recently deciphered the new license plate format in its August 2020 edition. Perhaps someone could take a look at this and update the article to include this information? 2600:8800:5080:2413:F948:23DD:8FA8:61C3 (talk) 02:51, 15 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not an ALPCA member, so I can't read the latest editions of Plates magazine for myself.
The sightings recorded on LicensePlates.cc, however, *do* suggest that the order in which serials in this format are being issued isn't random after all: the third and seventh characters have remained 'A' while the fifth character has gone from 'A' to 'B' to 'C', and the first character has progressed 'A' through 'Z' and then '0' through '9' before the fifth character has changed.
It's still a rather convoluted order, though - and, for now at least, probably a bit *too* convoluted to explain to casual readers. Klondike53226 (talk) 03:02, 17 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I came here to comment this as well. I'm seeing two things:

  • First A-Z and 0-9 are incremented together and the digit immediately following Z is 0. For example, plate number AZA0AAA is followed by plate number A0A0AAA
  • Second, the digits are incremented in the following order: 4th, 2nd, 6th, 1st, 5th, 3rd, and 7th digits. So basically:
    • AAA1AAA to AAA9AAA
    • ABA0AAA to ABA9AAA, then so on until:
    • AZA0AAA to AZA9AAA
    • A0A0AAA to A0A9AAA
    • A1A0AAA to A1A9AAA, then so on until A9A9AAA, which is followed by AAA0ABA.

I'm also not an ALPCA member; this is what the licenseplates.cc website gives me. I'm assuming someone can back this up, but for now I haven't added this to the article. epicgenius (talk) 21:59, 19 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Pre April 2020 AAA0001 Format Highest Number[edit]

In December 2021, an IP user changed the lasted issued plate of that format to "approximately CZZ9999" instead of the actual latest observed plate. We know that that format was not issued all the way to CZZ so I think it would be more accurate and clear to revert it back to the actual last observed plate which is CWU5546 according to licenseplates.cc Ryryjs (talk) 19:46, 31 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
