Since when did we pay a Church tax? At least in Norway people do not pay a Church tax - just regular income tax. I do not know about the other countries. In Norway we still have a State and Church union, we are planning on seperating them in the future. Maybe the church tax relates to Sweden?--AndersH 18:59, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Church of Norway is funded through the income tax, there isn't a separate tax or anything, but I guess you could technically consider that a church tax. I'll try to clarify the article. Peyna 19:23, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Missing Figures and Churches[edit]

Not all Lutheran churches (or church bodies) are members of the Lutheran World Federation, so these numbers may not be accurate. For example, in the United States, only the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is an LWF member. However, there are other Lutheran churches of significant size. The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod is not a member of LWF, but has 2.1 million members. And the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod has 380,000 members. Neither of these are counted in the statistics here. That's just the United States. I can't speak to other countries that may or may not have non-LWF member Lutherans. Article organization[edit]

This entire article is a bit odd, especially with the absence of Africa, South America and Asia where, debatably, most Lutherans are now. Moreover, if such a representation is missing, why are the sections on North America and Europe so long? The should be shortened a bit.Ep9206 04:34, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Australian figures incorrect[edit]

I came here looking for info about the Lutheran church in Australia as I had never come across one before, and wondered if they even existed. The quoted figure of 9% of Australia being Lutheran therefore seemed incorrect, so I went and had a look on the Australian Bureau of Statistics website. According to the most recent census, there were 250,365 people who put themselves down as Lutheran, out of a total population of 18,769,249 -- 1.3339%. Or, relative to the 1,248,674 who called themselves some kind of Christian, 1.9614%. The National Church Life Survey of 2001 (http://www.ncls.org.au/default.aspx?sitemapid=2261) shows that of the 1.3%, only 16% attend church regularly, but it didn't seem relevant to include that figure in the article. Percentages wrong[edit]

Indonesia[edit]

The Asia section states: "The Indonesian Christian Lutheran Church has 23,000 baptized members." However, the "By country" table indicates that Indonesia has a Lutheran population of 5,630,968 for a 2.3% of total population. The table of "Countries with more than 500,000 Lutherans" also indicates that Indonesia has 5,630,968 Lutherans. I am unsure, but the reference to "Indonesian Christian Lutheran Church appears to reference a particular, relatively small, church called Gereja Kristen Luther Indonesia (GKLI), which translates to "Indonesian Christian Lutheran Church". According to the Lutheran World Federation list of member churches, Indonesian Lutheran churches associated with the LWF are:

Number of Lutherans much to high[edit]

The figures of Lutherans by country as given by the Lutheran World Federation are highly suspect. For example, they consider one of their members "Protestant Church in the Netherlands" as totally Lutheran even though only 1% of these are actually Lutheran. This is why they arrive at the ridiculously inflated number of 2 million Lutherans in the Netherlands when it should really be less than 20000. The numbers from Indonesia and probably a lot of other countries seem to be similarly inflated. Bawm79 (talk) 12:10, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

removed map with errors[edit]

Two major mistakes. Ethiopia is not listed as having a large lutheran church but should be as shown in the other map still on the page. In the Netherlands, the lutherans were just below 20 thousand in 2004, when the lutheran church merged with two much larger protestant churches and formed the Protestant church of the Netherlands (PKN) that has around 1,7 million members currently. Untill these mistakes are fixed, please do not use the removed map. Grsd (talk) 16:13, 2 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Explanation of this map[edit]

North Dakota and South Dakota (shown in yellow) are the only states in which a plurality of the population is Lutheran.

This map is not accompanied by an explanation of the meaning of the colors. Mississippi is the only state that has that deep red color; presumably that should mean the per-capita number of Lutherans there is between two specified percentages, but it doesn't say what numbers those are. "Countries with more than 1 million Lutherans", biased?[edit]

"This numbers represents the Lutheran World Federation membership in the United States. According to Pew Research Center, all Lutherans in and outside this organization account for 3.5% of the U.S. population or around 11,690,000."

For the amount of Lutherans in the United States, I feel that this is potentially a biased number. The Lutheran World Federation, while certainly containing many Lutheran denominations, does not represent the very high amount of Lutherans who are part of the LCMS (Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod) in the states. 2601:5CE:4380:3A0:21C2:513:E96:F450 (talk) 15:13, 29 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
