Why did you nominate this now? This is practically quick-fail material. Do the work beforehand and get it up to a reasonable state, then nominate it. To point out a few things to work on: manual of style, prose, grammar (just a quick note: "Christian holidays are celebrated following both the Gregorian Calender and Julian Calender" *Calendar), references (as stated by Reaper above) but the main problem here is completion! Good articles boast some of the best material on Wikipedia, and since Lebanon is one of the most important topics available, we need it to be complete in all aspects, some sections here are only a sentence long. Quick to-do list

I noticed this article is being nominated for GA status. However, there are a number of items standing in the way before GA could be achieved. This is just a list I whipped up after a quick look at the article. Although the following are just basic suggestions without much detail, I think it could help to improve this article tremendously. Also, just as a point of reference, editors of this article ought to take a look at other country articles that are GAs: United States, Azerbaijan and Switzerland among others.

  • The "Geology and archaeology" section should be merged with the Geography section.
  • The History section needs to be much better organized and even revamped.
    • There's way too much emphasis on the conflicts of Lebanon's independence and post-independence era especially the events of the past decade: The French Mandate and independence, The 1948 War, the Civil Wars (1958, 1970s-1990), and the 20th-century Israeli invasion/occupation, and everything that happened before Israel's withdrawal in 2000 could fit into several paragraphs under the title "Independence and civil wars." The Cedar revolution, UN investigation, the Nahr al-Bared conflict, the 2008 civil strife, and the government collapse and re-formation could all fit into a several paragraphs in another section called "Contemporary era" if we just include the brief and most important aspects of each event. We could relegate the removed text to History of Lebanon.
    • There's very little information, if any, about Lebanon's history under the Phoenicians, Romans/Byzantines, various Arab Caliphates, Crusaders, Mamluks, and the Ottomans.
    • I didn't see any mention of the Ottoman era Druze-Maronite alliance that many say provided the roots of Lebanon's modern statehood.

Comment: I didn't see any mention of it in any other Lebanese articles. Maybe just once in one. I also didn't find it lots of sources. I don't know if its that important. Ramaksoud2000 (talk) 00:25, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

It might have been a rivalry/war (as FunkMonk has noted below) and not an alliance, but it's certainly worth mention. I'll post some sources about it on this page a little later. --Al Ameer son (talk) 04:12, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
  • The "Foreign relations" section should be expanded especially since Lebanese politics is heavily influenced by foreign countries.
  • The "Military" section should also be expanded a bit if possible and perhaps a few sentences about Hezbollah's superior strength to the Lebanese Army should be mentioned if it's not already covered somewhere in the History section.

Of course, the Lebanese Army is the only officially legitimate fighting force in the country, but I think it's notable to point out that Hezbollah is stronger. Again, this could be mentioned in the History section instead. I'm not sure which section is more appropriate. --Al Ameer son (talk) 04:49, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
Comment: I'm saying that I don't think they are stronger. They are certainly notable but not stronger. The Lebanese Army has four times as many men and UNIFL and the U.S. on their side. Hezbollah has war-torn Syria and Iran on their side. Ramaksoud2000 (talk to me) 00:50, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
I was talking more about military capabilities and not alliance networks. But in any case, Hezbollah's strength should be mentioned somewhere.   • The "Population projection" section should be better organized and perhaps just renamed to "Population." The points should be converted into a chart/table.

I just took a quick look and guess I missed that. However, I fail to see the point of having a table about the projected population every decade until 2100. If anything, the table should be replaced with the past and current populations if possible (I know there hasn't been an official census for a while). Also, on another note, it might be a good idea to have a chart of the current populations of the 5 or 10 largest Lebanese localities. --Al Ameer son (talk) 04:49, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

The history section is pretty lacking, no mention of the 1860s war, the 1958 American intervention and so on. The Ottoman period was even described with "medieval" as the header! FunkMonk (talk) 08:42, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
Hi all, I will tend to the geography / geology section, I disagree that the geology and archaeology sections should be merged. I will expand the archaeology section with the resources i have, i may also add some info about the flora somewhere in the article. as for the history section it really reflects the putrefying common history we have about Lebanon due to our heavily biased education system; It's a mess that intimidates the most experienced of editors :S Now there's also another issue, some sources are quoted out of context, we're in for a challenge guys, i used to dread the day when i would have to do this :S Eli+ 19:31, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
Yea the article is in bad shape in its present form, but it could be turned around with time and effort. Of course, that's easier said than done. I didn't even think about sources quoted out of context :( Honestly, I don't know too much about Lebanon's pre-Mandate history, but I'll look for some google book sources and post them on this page in a different section. Also, the History of Lebanon article has some info that could be transferred here in reduced form. The idea, of course, isn't to have an extensive History section. The problem is there's virtually nothing about Lebanon's historic past, yet we have a ridiculous amount of info on recent events. Luckily for us, the Lebanese education ministry doesn't edit wikipedia (unless I'm being naive) so I think interested editors shouldn't have to worry too much while working on this aspect of the article. Besides some clean up, I don't if I'll be doing much editing myself but I'll try to contribute what I can. Anyway, good luck everyone! --Al Ameer son (talk) 04:12, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

How appropriate and necessary is it, to put the French name of Lebanon "Liban" in the introduction of the article?

How appropriate and necessary is it, to put the French name of Lebanon "Liban" in the introduction (and info box) of the article? Although Lebanon (as well as Syria, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco) was ruled as a French mandate and French is widespread as second or third language, Arabic is the only "official national" language of Lebanon according to the (latest) Lebanese constitution, and French is not the official language of Lebanon, and the Lebanese constitution stipulates "A law determines the cases in which the French language is to be used". This is also the case of the other Arab countries which were ruled by France and are much more thoroughly Francophone than Lebanon (except Syria which is even less Francophone than Lebanon), where French is not an official language of these countries and does not have any official status at all. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.224.7.220 (talk) 01:36, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

"The Lebanon"?

I have recently come across several instances of someone using "The Lebanon" as the country name and was wondering if that was a common usage. I have been unable to find anything on this page about it. Is this common? If so, where? Is it an ENGVAR issue? --Khajidha (talk) 18:08, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

It is an older locution. In the fifties, it was perhaps the dominant form. Since then it has become less common, being replaced by plain "Lebanon." You might try a Google ngram search to track the change (Google ngram doesn't work on my computer, I guess because of the verison of ME it has, so I can't run the numbers myself). Yemen, Gambia and Ukraine have all gone through a similar change. 211.225.34.164 (talk) 13:47, 19 February 2015 (UTC)

as two concrete examples, (the) human league (british) had a song entitled "the lebanon" in 1984 -- mentioned in that article -- and christopher lee (british) used it when hosting saturday night live (american) in 1978. the subtitles/transcipts (likely done by americans) just have it as "lebanon", but it's pretty clear he adds "the".
some mention of the issue should be made in the article, IMHO. neither the "history" section nor its linked "main article" give any hint a "the" was ever included. 209.172.23.79 (talk) 01:53, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

Ethnicity (religion) in basic fact chart

Why are ethnic breakdowns not included in the fact chart at the top, like it is in the Israel page, for example. Does the first sentence make sense?

Maybe I'm missing something, but this is what I am seeing among all those parenthetical phrases: "Lebanon, spoken languages. officially the Lebanese Republic, is a country in Western Asia." It seems like the phrase "spoken languages ( Arabic, French and English)." either needs to be parenthesized differently, or placed somewhere else. I'm sure there shouldn't be a period before "officially," at the very least. The music section of the article should not be an ode to Lydia Canaan the first rock star of the middle east.

Fairuz, Wadih al Safi, Sabah or other mainstream artists are much more eligible to be mentionned in this section instead of Lydia Canaan. Half of the section is actually about her and there is no mention of Fairuz or the Rahbanis for instance, who have been much more influential to the music of Lebanon and the arab world. 3awil (talk) 18:24, 16 August 2017 (UTC)

Turkish or Ottoman Lebanon

JimPody: it is much more common in english and turkish for it to be called Turkish Lebanon. No, it isn't. The Google search "Ottoman Lebanon" -wikipedia gives 239 hits, while the search "Turkish Lebanon" -wikipedia gives 160 hits. Moreover: Many, perhaps most of the results from the first search actually do contain the combination "Ottoman Lebanon" describing that period of time, while it is difficult to find similar examples of "Turkish Lebanon" from the second search. The results are often of the type "Turkish, Lebanon, or maybe Armenian", "#turkish, #lebanon", "Turkish, Lebanon, Moroccan". Question about their law

The section about the law in Lebanon says "Capital punishment s still de facto used to sanction certain crimes, but no longer enforced." Shouldn't that be de jure, as it's still a part of their law, rather than de facto, which suggests that it's used, but without legal sanction? I'd change it myself, but I don't know enough about the situation or the terminology to know if my understanding is correct. JDZeff (talk) 21:22, 1 January 2018 (UTC)

"Lebanese pronunciation" of the Arabic name

Why is it written [lɪbˈnæːn] at the beginning of the article? One of the most distinctive features of the Lebanese dialect is the raising of Standard Arabic /a(ː)/ to [e̞(ː)~ɛ(ː)]. There are a few places up north (like Baalbek, I think?) that don't exhibit this raising, but it is absolutely predominant in the rest of Lebanon; as a speaker from the south myself I don't know anyone who doesn't say it [lɪbˈne̞ːn]. Does the current pronunciation have a reliable citation that would justify its not reflecting the common pronunciation?

Typo in Health section?

It states: "This raised the illues public awareness."

I looked up "illues", which means specifically an obstruction of the intestine. So that sentence seems awkward at best or most likely a typo. My best guess is that it was meant to say something like this:

"These illnesses raised public awareness."

or this: "These issues raised public awareness."

Edit Request, Languages in Lebanon

The wiki page states: "The use of Arabic by Lebanon's educated youth is declining, as they usually prefer to speak in French and, to a lesser extent, English, which are seen as more fashionable.[189][190]"

I fully checked and read both articles [189][190] cited as sources, one is from the french official international news agency France24 the other from the BBC the equivalent news agency for the UK, in any case, nowhere says that educated youth usually prefer to "speak french and to a lesser extent, english", these articles only refer to a supposed lack of proper use and comprehension of the arabic language by young students, mainly because of the writing systems, and the habit to mix "foreign words" in their conversations. There´s no real study to support the statement that educated youth "prefer to speak french", on the contrary it refers to the problem of arabic countries and that literally "Most of the Arab countries submit to the hegemony of English".

The articles Syria, Turkey, Turkey and Israel also say Western Asia. The article on Western Asia seems to include all of them, so this description seems accurate. Confusing dates

In the opening section this appears at the end of a paragraph: “The war partially led to military occupations by Syria (1975 to 2005) and Israel (1985 to 2000).“ The dates overlap and don’t make sense to a casual reading. That's a user-generated source. Here is one source from the Human Rights Watch but I don't know enough about the Lebanese legal system to know what the effect of this ruling is. Smallest recognized sovereign state in Asia???

At 10,452 sq km Lebanon is not the smallest recognized state in Asia. Leaving whatever is left of the Palestinian Territories that aren’t universally recognized by many; there is Singapore at around 700 sq km the same as Bahrain around 700 sq km. There is also Cyprus around 9,000 sq km and Brunei around 5,000 sq km all smaller than Lebanon. So Lebanon is at least fifth or sixth smallest sovereign nation state in Asia. 2019–2021 crisis - inaccuracies

Changing the description of changes around Taif Agreement

The current description of the Taif Agreement's changes to the National Pact is centered around the de-confessionalization of Lebanese politics, which is misleading. I propose a more precise look at the structural changes of the Taif agreement. The Taif Agreement codified the former National Pact's sectarian confessional system.[1]

But in the case of other countries such as Portuguese Republic, Hellenic Republic, Gabonese Republic, French Republic. Just also the Lebanese government uses République libanaise in French and not République du Liban. Just a suggestion you can put both Lebanese Republic and Republic of Lebanon for clarification.
