John G.[edit]

The article referred to Paton as "John G." throughout. I've corrected it to "Paton" or "John" or, where appropriate, "John G. Paton." Referring to someone in a biographical piece by their first name and middle initial (without the surname) is unprecedented. For example, if writing about William H. Macy, you wouldn't say "William H. won a Golden Globe." If talking about C.S. Lewis, you would call him "Lewis" or possibly "Clive," but never "Clive S.".

I've changed these references to "John" or "Paton." If I've done so in error, please feel free to correct.

Please note that I also changed the phrase Paton "heard the call of God" to Paton "felt called by God," because "heard the call of God" is not a phrase that is used in secular spheres.

As a great-grandson of John G Paton I grew up with him being referred to constantly as John G by family and friends. It therefore seemed natural to refer to him as such in this article. If this has offended the literary sensibilities of others then so be it.

Mathieson spelling[edit]

I have reverted the spelling of Matheson (as changed by StAnselm 19th November 2014) back to the original spelling of Mathieson.

Mathieson is the spelling used by John G Paton in his autobiography published by Hodder & Stoughton in 1890. I have in my possession a hard copy of this book and have just checked it out.

Mathieson is also used in this Gutenberg eBook http://www.gutenberg.org/files/28025/28025-h/28025-h.htm
