English Spelling[edit]

I think it might be better to give the patriarch's name in its normal English spelling, viz. Ignatius Joseph III Yonan. The current spelling, no doubt deriving from one of those informative Catholic websites on the uniate churches, is French.

Oh yes, I see what you mean. Never mind, I'll get round to them all eventually. I just happened to notice this one because I wanted to link him to the article Dioceses of the Syrian Catholic Church, which I created yesterday.

Hi there. Nice to see you're gradually adding all this interesting stuff on the uniate churches. No need to apologize about Ignace. Names are always tricky, especially on English websites written by French or Italian Catholics who are not working in their first language. Ignatius is both the Latin and English spelling, though it's not a very common name in English, except in ecclesiastical contexts. I haven't looked at the other articles on the Syrian Orthodox and Syrian Catholic hierarchy, but if necessary Gregoire should be replaced with Gregory and Denys with Dionysius. Iwanis (not Iwannis) is also a fairly common name in these churches. Cyril too, of course, though that name shouldn't present any problems. The names of dioceses may also need looking at. I noticed that the website I went to to identify the present bishops of the Syrian Catholic Church used French versions such as Bassorah for Basra and Nisibe for Nisibis.

Position about Syria[edit]

The text claims: [Patriarch Ignatius Joseph III Yonan] "has continuously claimed that the situation in Syria is not a civil war, but rather insurgents.[7]" The source is a Youtube video with a probably Australian and trustworthy news piece. But the Patriarch doesn't claim that at all. He says: "Countries have the responsibility of finding another way than fomenting violence to just let the regime of Assad fall". That does not mean it's not a civil war. Therefore I took out that bit and put the source at the end, where it does belong, because the second part of the same sentence is in fact correct.
