Location of station[edit]

Any idea why the station was built so far from both the old village (where most New Town railway stations are located e.g. East Kilbride) and the new town centre? It must have been literally in the middle of nowhere when first built.86.0.206.21 (talk) 16:00, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You need to consider the location and owners of the original lines. The Scottish Central Railway built Cumbernauld station on their line, whilst the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway had Croy and Castlecary on their line. The village was located some way from all of these, whilst the original part of the new town was built between the Scottish Central Railway and the A80, with Wardpark up towards Castlecary. Later expansions were towards the south and also towards Croy. --Stewart (talk | edits) 16:46, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Anecdotal information, dating back to at least the 1960's, is that Fleming (main landholder) refused permission for the railway station to be built on his land, which formed an estate around/next to Cumbernauld Village. This situation might also be true for the route of the railway line itself which meant there was never a good location to retrospectively move the station. However, I cannot find any online citations to back-up this possibility. Nobby B (talk) 12:41, 19 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The original location of the station was more to do with the fireclay mine at Glencryan than the village. I added a bit in the main article with a reference regarding the siting of the station within the new town. AndrasSkot (talk) 08:44, 10 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
