Duplication of articles - European Fisheries Agency and Community Fisheries Agency

Good morning, AS an staff member, I have spotted a duplication of articles referring the same European Agency:

Need some help

A user is requesting that I restore an article that was deleted as not meeting notability guidelines (Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Jaume_Cañellas_Galindo_(2nd_nomination)). The user has created a proposed draft at User:Samen54. Could someone take a moment to ensure this meets the notability guidelines be ensuring references are 1) About the subject, 2) Significant, and 3) Independent? AFD's of Catalonia articles and suggestion

There are about 12 Catalonia articles up for deletion (see today's AFD's). Most are on obscure political historical topics, have no editors, and no sources, but good content. One suggestion would be to create a "Political History of Catalonia" article and put all of those orphans into it and bring them out of obscurity so that they can get a bit of attention. Hi, folks. A while back I wrote an article on Japanese composer Minako Hamano which was deleted from the English Wikipedia as "unexpandable." Lest the research go to waste, I'd like to add the information to her entry in other language Wikipedias, but my language skills suck. I've made up a Spanish machine translation in my sandbox. Leaflet For Wikiproject Spain At Wikimania 2014

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

The Spanish and Portuguese Empires rivalry

    The Spanish Empire reached its maximum expansion when it joined Portuguese Empire.

It occured in 1580, and everything continued going OK until 1640, date in which Portugal wanted to be independent again. Please can someone take a quick look at the first line of the lede for WP:BLP stub Sergio Gutierrez-Ferrol and check that the statement "Sergio Gutiérrez-Ferrol professionally known as Sergio Gutierrez-Ferrol" makes sense. I would assume that when playing professionally in Spain, France, Portugal Sergio Gutiérrez-Ferrol was allowed to keep his acento ortográfico, no matter whatever ITF rules say. Thanks. Since this is an English wikipedia make sure you also check in all the English news sources, the ITF and ATP, to see what name he plays tennis under. Also check the name he chose to register with at the ITF. His name in the lead was just now changed to Sergio Gutiérrez-Ferrol (previously at Sergio Gutierrez-Ferrol) which was left intact and not quickly reverted, but not to have the name listed in which he is registered to play tennis and used in almost all English sources is going a bit too far here. When you say "chose" do you mean the ITF allows Spanish players to keep their acento ortográfico but Gutiérrez-Ferrol chose to replace "é" with "e"? My understanding was that there was no choice. In ictu oculi (talk) 11:18, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
He can chose to spell his name anyway he wants as far as I know as long as he uses the English alphabet. Novak Djokovic chose to add a J to his name for use in all things tennis. That is what he is known as around the world professionally. He could choose not to play professional tennis, but in doing so he needed an anglicized name. In Hollywood a studio pretty much owned Archie Leach. The studio who owned his rights probably told him he could choose any name as long as it was Cary Grant. Professional tennis gives players more leeway in case they want to add a letter to make it sound more to their liking. My preference is to open the lead with the most well known version of his name using pro tennis authorities ITF, ATP and Davis Cup plus English sources like the press and tv and magazines. Switching to the Foreign spelling first is not my choice but as long as both name versions are in the lead sentence I wasn't going to complain too much. Dropping either is not acceptable as it is helpful to readers to see both versions of his name. Fyunck(click) (talk) 18:57, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

Hello Fyunck, thank for confirming that European tennis players do not have a choice in dropping accents under ITF systems. In which case what ITF does is irrelevant for WP purposes. Novak Djokovic (Новак Ђоковић) is a Serb, not a Croat or Slovene, so his name, at home, would usually be in Cyrillic. Sergio Gutiérrez-Ferrol is not Serbian and does not use a Cyrillic name. Nor is Sergio Gutiérrez-Ferrol an actor working under a WP:STAGENAME like Cary Grant. I think everyone appreciates the work you do on tennis articles, however, as per link I have given several times WP:Manual_of_Style/Biographies#First_mention gives the following examples and format:

First mention

While the article title should generally be the name by which the subject is most commonly known, the subject's full name should be given in the lead paragraph, if known. Many cultures have a tradition of not using the full name of a person in everyday reference, but the article should start with the complete version. For example:

  • (from Fidel Castro): Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz (born August 13, 1926) ...
  • (from François Mitterrand): François Maurice Adrien Marie Mitterrand (October 26, 1916 – January 8, 1996) ...
  • (from Brian Jones): Lewis Brian Hopkin Jones (28 February 1942 – 3 July 1969) ...

He has a choice of what name to use as long as it is Anglicized. But it doesn't matter even if he was told what name he was going to use. If you are told to use Fred Fredlich by the ITF, and then the ATP also decided to use Fred Fredlich, and then the NY Times and ABC and Davis Cup... till everyone knew you as Fred Fredlich, then that's what you would be listed on here at wikipedia. We would also list you natural born name if it was Ace Ventura, but you would be listed here as Fred. So it doesn't matter how it happens all that matters is can we find sources for it. Ataria

Would anyone here be willing to have a look-see at Ataria? It was deleted at AfD for lack of notability and was very close to a complete copyvio. I did some work on it prior to restoring it to mainspace but it's still somewhat lacking. I wondered if anyone might know of some more local sources that might not come up via Google or a good starting point? I've also posted this to the Museums WikiProject. Thanks! Fist European Settlement: Spanish name is misspelled?

Hello I found in the Colonial history of the United States that the first European settlement in USA current land was founded by Lucas Vázquez de Ayllón and was named San Miguel de Gualdape. However, the Spanish Wikipedia entry for Lucas Vázquez de Ayllón [1] clearly indicates that the name is San Miguel de Guadalupe. An internet search shows other names like "San Miguel de Guadalpe" and "San Miguel de Guandape".

The "Gualdape" version is only found in English entries but is not found in any Spanish text, not even a word or location similar to "Gualdape". There are many Spanish words that start with "Guadal..." and even famous locations as Guadalupe, Guadalajara.

Given that this is the First European Settlement in the USA soil and the importance in Spain, South Carolina and USA history as such, the name should be correctly spelled, whichever the spelling is.

I am sure that the Spanish documents of the colony will provide the correct information on this name as Lucas Vázquez de Ayllón was a high ranked official of the Spanish Crown, appointed by the king itself.

Third party sought

I'm looking for a third party to review a content dispute. Ordinarily, I'd go to WP:3O, but the topic is particularly related to this WikiProject, so I hoped to find a more knowledgeable person here to help.

The dispute is over content presently located at User:Itzcoatzin. This user originally created a page that presently resides at Zambrano (surname), presenting a history of this surname and its notable holders. I and other editors edited the original author's work rather heavily, producing the version that exists today. Itzcoatzin wished to continue developing his version of the article, and has produced his present version on his user page. He then asked for feedback on his version, which I provided. Itzcoatzin is not satisfied with my evaluation of his work.

I would like an independent reviewer to look at Itzcoatzin's work and provide an unbiased opinion, as this user believes that I have not been fair with his work. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 17:43, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

Spanish MOS Needed?

I noted three months back to a couple of IPA pronunciation expert editors that Category:Wikipedia_Manual_of_Style_(regional) has:

Is there really nothing at all that could benefit by giving guidance? For instance:
  1. Like when to use a Catalan place name, when to use a Spanish one?
  2. Like whether to use accents on capitals, like Oscar or Óscar?
  3. IPA pronunciation?
  4. Spelling between Iberian and American varieties of Spanish?
  5. How to treat Quechua (Runa Simi) and other articles?
  6. and so on?

I understand that risk. MOS pages can be for people who don't contribute to articles but like to order around those who do. Nevertheless, Catalan and Valencian for Catalonia and Valencia, and 100% Spanish accents for all Iberian & Lat-Am articles are already defacto part of en.wp. I suggest those who want to argue with how en.wp should be go and each create their "MY.WP". But if there are editors who are prepared to start from the consensus that already exists in existing articles and provide detail on the above, for example... No it would need several editors input. But I'd see it as being documenting what editors already do, for those with less experience. For format someone could translate the sections in Wikipedia:Manual of Style/France & French-related onto Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Spain & Spanish-related and then leave the content blank for brief infill after talk Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Spain & Spanish-related. An MOS should do the work of preventing edit warring by providing a centralized discussion for policy issues. If there's real disagreement about when to do one thing or another, then it sounds like an MOS is needed. En.wiki doesn't have a lot of coverage of Canarian nationalist issues, so I translated Alternativa Popular Canaria. Hope folks find this interesting; let me know if there's a better way to translate some of the local election terms, but overall I think I'm pretty close. Hope some folks find this interesting. Don Domingo d'Yriarte

Could anyone find more info on him? All I can find is that around 1792 he was a Spanish envoy/ambassador to France; in 1795 he was one of the last diplomats to leave Poland (Warsaw), where he was an ambassador, and later he was a Spanish diplomat in Vienna or Berlin. The craters on Venus is named after different famous women in history, of which many has articles here. But who was the "M. A. Fernandez" who is listed under F in the List of craters on Venus? Her full name is not there, it only says "M. A. Fernandez, Spanish actress (18th century)". Does any one know? Much of the content of the above listed pages has been removed as it has been deemed spam, much of which I disagree with. Most of the script was information related to this beach which would be relevant if the reader had an interest in making a visit to the beach. Much of this content can be found on other Beach articles on Wikipedia and I give an example here, Salt Point State Park. Low-importance?

On which basis it is decided that crucial geographic articles about the main mountain systems in Spain such as Montes de Toledo are "low importance"? What are the parameters for "high importance" in WikiProject Spain? I would have setteld even for mid-importance, but "Low" is definitely far-fetched.Xufanc (talk) 04:20, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

Just looking at your one example, I can see that RedWolf (talk · contribs) assessed the article after your creation of the talk page. He is a member of WP:MOUNTAINS but not WP:SPAIN so he has no standing to assess for Spain. Feel free to re-assess for Spain yourself. I certainly won't object. Mahon, Mahón or Maó

For some reason the article on the town of Mahon on the island of Menorca/Minorca has been called "Port Mahon".

I'm not sure where the "port" thing has come from. I have never seen or heard of the town ever being called this. A google search provides nothing to support this name and the official website calls it simply Mahon. Even in Spanish/Catalan it is just Mahón or Maó- never Puerto Mahón or Port de Maó.


I have started a discussion at Talk:Port_Mahon#Requested_move_2 to get the name corrected, if people would like to comment.

*Menorca : Minorca English uses the Italian spelling, also Menorca

while the Talk:Minorca → Menorca RM is ongoing.

Help with Spanish language sources?

Hi! I'm looking for some help with translating sources for the article on Luis Coloma. I'm having some luck with English language sources, but most of the better sources are in Spanish. I can read Spanish up to a degree and can use Google Translate to get some of the words that I can't figure out on my own, but the problem is that I can't really get the nuances and finer details with my bare bones Spanish knowledge. I've done relatively well so far, but I would really love it if someone can pull a little more from the sources currently on the article. There is an entry on the Spanish language WP, which should help a little with finding information. Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

RfC concerning 305 articles mentioning "Pablo/Pau" Casals

Probably should have notified WP Spain of this RfC earlier, but WP Music was notified. There is a RfC on Talk:Pablo Casals which is self explanatory which concerns 305 articles mentioning Pablo/Pau Casals; 275 have "Pablo", 30 have "Pau" which mainly relate to Catalan culture topics including Catalan people, Gold Medal of the Generalitat of Catalonia, El cant dels ocells, Josep Maria Corredor i Pomés, Lluïsa Vidal, Francesc Pujols, Costa Brava, El Vendrell, Palau de la Música Catalana, List of Catalans, Music of Catalonia etc.

Spanish Civil War, the subject of this article is important - the Spanish Civil War - a subject which has been researched by a wide range of academics of varying nationalities. Bonafide copy editors, with the best of intentions, have attempted to extend the article in order to give it a similar length to the very well writen good article in Spanish Wiki. Unfortunately as a result of maintaining the unusually narrow range of sources, the English article now appears as though it is the paraphrasing of one main source, Thomas, whose book was written in 1960, though re-published more recently. I cannot see that a topic of such importance can have good article status when it relies to such an extent on one source which is out of date. I previously recommended that this article be updated so it can reflect a similarly broad range of sources as the Spanish wiki article and it was listed for GOCE where editing was attempted but the editor concluded that the range of sources was too narrow. Translation from Spanish to English had also been suggested and a notice has been posted on the Spanish article last year. It would be good to have the views of editors involved in this project page, which I was not aware of previously. Isthisuseful (talk) 11:36, 7 March 2015 (UTC)

Is it normal practice in Spain to change the Catalan spelling "Miquel" to "Miguel" when writing in Spanish? Currently I am using the spelling "Miguel" for the musician/chess player Miguel Farré Mallofré, because that's the spelling I've usually seen in chess literature. I have redirects from Miquel Farré i Mallofré and Miquel Farré Mallofré, but one of these could be moved to the main article title if there is a consensus. Pictures needed

2239 Spanish municipalities do not have any photograph on Commons. Not a single one, good or bad, old or new. That means that more than a quarter of them cannot be seen in Wikimedia. And that's a lot. So we are trying to get pictures of them. If you happen to have any, please upload them. We'll be grateful. LGV Perpignan–Figueres

I think article LGV Perpignan–Figueres needs updating, because I saw that trains are now running from Paris to Barcelona instead of to just Figueres. So presumably the railway is now from Perpignan to (close to?) Barcelona. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:37, 3 March 2015 (UTC)

Translations from other Wikipedias are always welcome - please see Wikipedia:Translation#How to translate. Many articles carry a notice {{Expand Spanish}} showing that the Spanish Wikipedia has content which could with benefit be translated to the corresponding article on English Wikipedia. These articles are also listed here. Then there is this list, divided into articles not in English, and those "needing cleanup", i.e. someone identified them as poor translations, often machine translations. We need an article Cannabis in Spain

Hello, I'm working at WP:WikiProject Cannabis, and we're trying to expand our coverage of "Cannabis in (country)" articles, and I saw that we don't have one for Spain. Spain has both relatively high consumption, and a very interesting legal situation with the gray-area legality of cannabis clubs in parts of the country.

I found out about the Centro Educativo Español de La Habana. I couldn't find it on the Spanish government's list of private Spanish international schools. GLAMimg Madrid was the therm used to call the project. It's a GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) project in three national museums at the same time, with a Wikipedian in Residence, and a edit-a-thon and many workshops about Wikipedia were cellebrated. This contest is to improve the articles or create new ones about the museums and their collections in any language. Thank you. The Canary Islands, in winter, use Western European Time (WET).[2] WET is equivalent to GMT or UTC, so it is an hour behind Central European Time which applies in the rest of Spain. Wiki Loves Folk!

Hi, today starts a new photo contest organized by Wikimedia Spain and focused on festivals declared of touristic interest in Spain: Wiki Loves Folk. The contest aims to collect images freely licensed to illustrate content on these festivals in Wikipedia and enhance the online presence of Spanish folklore. Along with its monumental and environmental richness, Spain has a rich and varied folklore: carnivals, food festivals, religious celebrations as Easter or Corpus Christi, cultural and sporting events or popular festivals, among others.

It is about sharing original photographs, taken recently or in the past, between April 1 and 30, 2016 or, in a second period, between November 15 and December 15, 2016. The subject of the contest is all those festivals declared of touristic interest by the various administrations: international, national, regional, provincial and local levels. The complete list, with additional information and a map for each region is available at wikilov.es/folk, the competition website. To participate, simply have an user account on Wikimedia Commons and upload the pictures by following the steps on the web.

Auto-assessment of article classes

Zanata Stone dimensions

Translation help with short references

I'm currently working on an article in my sandbox for an animated short film called Le Building. While the film itself is French, I've happened across two Spanish-language reviews of the film. Both appear to come from credible sources, and I would like to possibly quote them in the article (meaning that Google Translate won't quite cut it). Would anyone here able to help me out? Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge ‎ has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. If anybody here would like to contribute to a European one or would rather contribute to a sub one specifically for Spain like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Spain) based on Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic), sign your name under the section for Spain and I'll start it if there is enough support. For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing.
