Adding a CAPTCHA requirement to the Email a User page

Hi, I have a suggestion (but I'm not sure if this is the correct place.) Anyway, I was wanting to suggest that it should be a requirment to enter a captcha of letters and numbers in order to send someone an email via Wikipedia's built in Email-a-user page. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Emailuser/(Input your own user name here)) This would be in order to help prevent computers or automated devices from being able to mass-email people on wikis. I don't understand how to make a sandbox so I can experiment. I'm not very good at using the code here yet, and I don't really understand it. I am Thai, and do not understand Wikipedia language. Thank you Jackie-thai (talk) 06:33, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I need help in setting up a sandbox. I am Thai, and my English is limited, as far as understanding Wikipedia language. Since a page I contributed was "speedy deleted", it is clear I need help in contributing my page. Can someone please walk me through the steps in setting up a sandbox? I want to contribute a page about a religious leader who is based in Thailand, and need help in getting started. Thank you, and please use simple language. Help with user page

Hi, I was wondering if it would be possible to lock my user page from edits. The reason I ask is that someone placed a sock puppet banner on my page which an admin later removed on account of no evidence, yet the user continues to replace the banner. I have asked him to leave me alone. Libro0 (talk) 23:54, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

I have a similar question. Someone sharing my name has now twice anonymously edited my User page to describe him rather than me. Since I, not he, am the Wikipedia User whose (slight) contributions are described there, I'd like to have the content on that User page describe me, and not him. Mark Durst (talk) 20:53, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

There are two solutions for this, you can either ask an admin to protect it at WP:RPP, or you can create a user subpage such as User:Example/userpage.js. Then transclude it to your userpage. LegoKontribsTalkM 03:50, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Online status

How can I get my online status, (i.e. Jkasd is currently online, or offline) updated on my user page. I don't use any of the IRC stuff. Thank you. Jkasd 04:06, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi, the easiest way to do it, is just to have a box with an image (maybe a red circle) which you change (to a green circle) manually when you log in. Im sure there is a bot that does this, I think by detecting your contributions... I will have a look and try and find it. ← κεηηε∂γ (shout at me) 10:23, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
Found it! Try this, you dont need to use IRC - Link to bot ← κεηηε∂γ (shout at me) 12:20, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
OK, Thanks, but how do I set it up? Jkasd 14:32, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
To be honest, I've never used it, so im not sure... try adding to your userpage, then add somewhere. That should be it. ← κεηηε∂γ (shout at me) 15:18, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
That bot has been blocked(1), is there another way to do this? twirligigLeave one! ⋄ Check me out! 17:09, 20 January 2009 (UTC)
Manually. There is a tool called Qui, which can let you set your status easily and see the status of your friends. You can also use User:Hersfold/StatusTemplate, but that one doesn't have a friends list. As for talk page notices for Qui, I personally prefer UserStatus, but you can also see an alternative listed in the documentation. Not Automatic per se, but it's easy to use.--Unionhawk Talk 00:47, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

Question about watchlist page

In the watchlist page after the user name and timestamp there is always a number enclosed in brackets. Like +29 in below example.

 (diff) (hist) . . User:Gppande‎; 05:33 . . (+29) . . Gppande (Talk | contribs) (added wiki add for project india)

Sometimes this "+" is replaced by "-". What does this number and sign signify? I found it is not the count of number of times the article was edited nor the count of contribution made by 'the' user to 'the' page. What is it? --gppande «talk» 14:10, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

That is the number of characters added (or removed) to that revision of the page. The count includes wiki-markup, whitespace, and comments; for templates and images, it counts the number of characters used to transclude them. If more than a certain amount of characters are deleted (around 1,000), the number is shown in bold red. Jkasd 14:32, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Where is my user page

I am living at "Norra Botkyrka" which is a new town in the South of Stockholm and also a subject word in Wikipedia English. I made some editorial additions and listed as my user name Joachim Colling and gave my email address in the page "User:Joachim Colling" because I wanted to give the original editor the chance to discuss my additions. Some changes I made were like moving a paragraph and they were listed in the history. Now all these notes about the changes were marked with (undo) and with an IP number. But somehow even my user page has vanished. I cannot find it but when trying to create a new account under my real name Joachim Colling I get the answer that this user name is already in use. Who is using it? Why has the user page "Joachim Colling" been deleted? Have I made some mistake?

Inexplicable 'gap' between userboxes

Hey. I've got my userboxes organized the way I like them, but I found that in the "My Politics" and "My Spirituality" categories of userboxes, there's an inexplicable 'gap' between userboxes. Diving page into two columns

Could someone please tell me the markup needed to divide my userpage into two nice collums. Thanks.ChrisDHDR   @ 10:46, 9 June 2007 (UTC)

I'm not exactly sure if this will work for graphic intensive userpages, but you could try using the col-begin and col-2 formatting. (for info on how to use that see Template:col-begin). If not, what most users do for their userpage is create a table with 2 columns. It's usually a lot easier to get the formatting right with tables. Help:Table should have the required info on how you could create a suitable table. Hope that helps. --snowolfD4( talk / @ ) 18:04, 9 June 2007 (UTC)

Don't use one myself, and I know that some users manually update their status page (what a pain :), but as far as I know your best option would be to use Chris G Bot 3. It replaced the defunct StatusBot.
As far as I understand it, to use it you need to first put Category:Wikipedians who use StatusBot on your userpage and the bot will automatically create a page for you at User:StatusBot/Status/Tehjustice, which will be updated every 5 mins to say either "online" or "offline". You can then transclude that onto your userpage. You can also use the template , which will automatically add your userpage to the category and it will also add the status bot template (like here) to your userpage. The advantege of not using the template is you can then do somethink funkey with the #switch code, like I found here [3].
Hope that helps. --snowolfD4 ( talk / @ ) 02:11, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks all. Any other imput is welcome too. One more question. A few months ago I stumbled across a user who somehow managed to make some complicated status code that displayed different statuses based on the day of the week and time of day. (ex: This user is online, but in school, This user is offline, probably doing homework). Anyone know of any users with similar status trackers I could look at and ask for help using? If not, I think I'll use the default one. justice 02:45, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
You could probably use a script with the #switch command to create such a display, i.e. the first part as to whether you're online will be done by Status Bot and the "...at school" part could be done by comparing the current time with the preset values. --snowolfD4 ( talk / @ ) 15:52, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

How to safely test live templates in a sandbox?

I sometimes sandbox test templates in my user pages. However, sometimes, transcluding a template automatically places a page in an article category. This is bad, as it makes my user page look like an article. For example, I have a sandbox demo of Ise at User:Hroðulf/AIlist. It makes User:Hroðulf/AIlist show up on Category:Companies listed on the Irish Stock Exchange. I wish!

How can I safely demonstrate a template in a sandbox, when that template has article categories?

--Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 22:04, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Use substitution ("subst:"). For example, pulls that template's wikicode into the sandbox, where you can edit it. Then you can comment out or remove the lines setting the categories. That turns the sandbox into a template, and you then may need to test it in another sandbox (so you can pass parameters to it, etc.) The Transhumanist    11:19, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

Unauthorized intervention on my User page (foreign Wikipedias)

This is not vandalism and I don't even know what to call it (tampering?), and I'm asking here first because I'm not sure how to track down the problem where it occurs:
As I edit pages in numerous foreign languages, I've opened a User account on several other Wikipedias and created a User page with:

 • Babel boxes indicating my language proficiencies
 • Interwiki links to my User page in the Wikipedias where I'm primarily active (English, Hebrew, Simple English)

Upon logging on to several of my User accounts today, I discovered content on my User page in Spanish and Arabic] that I had not added -- and according to the pages' edit histories, there is no record of any edit adding it! In both cases, these involve the box for "Other Languages" on the left-hand navigation bar:

 • The Spanish page includes [a language that looks like] Arabic
 • The Arabic page includes Spanish

Both of these link not to my User page in that foreign-language Wikipedia, but a page within that Wikipedia for the Babel template of Hebrew level three -- though my name (User account) doesn't appear when the template (category) is selected.
I suspect that this is something malign, and I want to know whom to notify, what may/will be done about this unwanted phenomenon, and who's behind it (particularly if sanctions are in order). Thank you! Deborahjay (talk) 13:22, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

Update: I've tracked this down to a particular edit by a certain editor of the he-3 Babel template on the Spanish Wikipedia. Although this editor has been dormant (i.e. no edits) for the past four weeks there, I'm leaving messages to try eliciting some explanation and treatment of the adverse results. -- Deborahjay (talk) 18:11, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

Im not entirely sure, but i think it may be because you have added a category identifying you on the other wikis. Perhaps the boxes are carried over inter-wikis? ← κεηηε∂γ (talk) 20:29, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
Since this is the English Wikipedia, and your issue is with foreign language wikis that we don't have any direct control over, my suggestion would be to post your question to m:Meta:Babel which is the central clearinghouse for all of the WMF wikis, including the foreign language projects. Also, I should note that the site formatting of pages and what not, does vary greatly among projects. MBisanz talk 22:08, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

College athletics

User:Bus2Beezlebub: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Joseph%27s_Hawks For some reason I can't edit out the "Football stadium" on the right side. There is no football stadium but there is one for soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, etc. so I just need to take the "Football" out but it doesn't even show up when I go to edit. Any ideas?

 1. Please add new questions to the bottom of the page (goes for most of Wikipedia; there is a 'new section' button at the very top that helps.)
 2. Your question comes down to the design of the template Infobox college athletics, which ordinary editors like you and I can tweak if the rest of the community is in agreement. The place to discuss changes to the template is Template talk:Infobox college athletics. It seems to me quite appropriate to ask there if the football stadium can be made optional. Suspected Sockpuppetry

Hello. My user page begins with the "Suspected Abuse of Multiple Account" and "suspected sockpuppetry" notice. In fact I did use my logged-in account and my IP address to make a point about an edit, but I was unaware of a specific rule against such an act (underhanded, I figured; unlawful, I didn't know). Can you tell me if there is some sort of statute of limitations on this notice and if there might be a period of time after which no similar act occurs and good standing is maintained, when the notice can be removed from the page and merely be archived? In other words, is there such a thing as making amends and gaining release? Thank you, Lantana11 (talk) 03:45, 26 May 2008 (UTC)Lantana11Lantana11 (talk) 03:45, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Userpage design help

I have an annoying "contents" box that I want to get rid of. My way of fixing it would remove the edit link in my vandal box. I want the edit link, but don't want the contents box. The same thing is happening here, as well. There is also a few other issues on that page that require minor fixing for someone experienced to look at. Also, my information box is nested in my Vandal Box box. Could someone help? Thanks, --haha169 (talk) 21:23, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

This happened to me as well before. From what I can tell, the only reason why this happens is if you make too many categories. Then, Wikipedia will automatically make a category box for others to locate different topics/categories faster. (Reply on my Talk page you want to make any posts directed to me). Chimchar monferno (talk) 17:52, 30 June 2008 (UTC)
The magic word to fix this is __NOTOC__, which turns off the contents box for the current page, if you place this code on a line by itself.

Vertical Menu

Well, I have a pretty boring user page! I would like it to look a lot smarter and have a couple of ideas on how to improve it. I don't really want to trade places, because I'd like to do it myself and be involved in the process. What I would like to see is a menu (similar to the one I'm messing with here), but vertically aligned, on the left, at the top. Once I can figure out how to do that, I want to change some of the icons, make the icons smaller, and space them out a bit more so the menu takes up a bit more page length. Unfortunately, I've hunted and hunted for an example and tried to mess with the code myself, and still can't work out how to get the darn menu on the left and vertical! Does anyone have any suggestions? If it's easier and you're feeling helpful, maybe a quick edit to the page so I can see how it's done would be really useful. I think I can handle the rest of it (I hope, lol), but it's that vertical alignment which is tripping me up! Thanks :), Maedin (talk) 18:42, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

I've made adjustments to your sandbox page to make the menu line up vertically. I hope I understood your request correctly. The icons can be changed by replacing the file name after "image=" and the size can be altered by changing the numbers in the "width" and "height" parameters. – Skyezx // msg 23:40, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Subpage help

Hello there, I need some help with subpages and tables. I would like to transclude User:It Is Me Here/Accounts/Note into User:It Is Me Here/Accounts (I have used as the markup to do it when testing previously) inside the User:It Is Me Here/Accounts table but above all the informaiton. So, just as User:It Is Me Here/About me appears to have User:It Is Me Here/Account information contained within it, so I want User:It Is Me Here/Accounts/Note to appear inside but at the top of User:It Is Me Here/Accounts. However, my attempts to position the transclusion code have resulted in the entire table being messed up in some way at preview. What is the easiest way to make what I am looking for work? If I'm honest, the layout that I currently have on my user page was a bit of a fluke and the code is quite volatile; changing the order of the boxes will mess it up, so it would be useful to have a guaranteed way of putting boxes inside other boxes.

Also, how can I make the text on User:It Is Me Here/Accounts/Note centred? It should be centred, I would have thought, but is still aligned left when I view it in IE7.

Any help would be appreciated. It Is Me Here (talk) 12:51, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

Image

Hi, I would like to know how to insert image onto my user page.Arilang1234 (talk) 11:28, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

Images can be inserted into any Wikipedia page using . For example, if you want to put a picture of the Wikipedia logo, you would type on your userpage, . Thumb is optional as is the width parameter. Width can be changed by changing the the 'width' value. The result would be thus:
Images that can be used are found in Wikimedia Commons or you can upload your own. However, make sure the images you upload are not copyrighted. In addition, images already uploaded to Wikimedia under fair use can be used only in the articles they are intended for, thus are not allowed on user pages.– Skyezxmessage 00:55, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

Overlapping boxes

Please have a look at the current version of my user page here. From my browser, the top of the "Wikipedia Signpost" box (inserted via template) is visible in the space between the two boxes above it (these being a template and a table, respectively), but curiously, text within the Signpost has been shifted down so it's all visible. I was able to improve it by adding a <br> just before "Signpost" (currently removed to demonstrate the problem), but the boxes still appear overlapped, the improvement being that the top of the "Signpost" box now appears to be hidden beneath the table. I'm sure there is a better solution. All templates and tables are using "float:left", and changing this or removing "clear:none" from the table does not make any visible change for me. Feel free to edit my page directly if you have a solution. --A Knight Who Says Ni (talk) 14:31, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

I removed the floats because they don't seem to be working with your 'articles created' list. Instead of floats, I used padding to move the list slightly to the right so it doesn't overlap with the Signpost template. Alternatively, if you don't want the Signpost box right next to your list, and instead want your list below it, change "padding-left" to "padding-top." About 400px will do (i.e. "padding-top:400px"). – Skyezxmessage 20:38, 8 November 2008 (UTC)
Before I saw your reply here, I saw the change you made on the user page, and tried to change it to put the list below the boxes. And since I didn't read your advice first, I used a slightly different method: I put back the "float" on the Signpost box and put a "div" around that (instead of the list below it), and put the "padding-top" on that div to make the Signpost box begin in the right place. I used your "div" as an example. Thanks for your help! --A Knight Who Says Ni (talk) 22:08, 8 November 2008 (UTC)
No problem. It doesn't matter which method you use, as long as it works. =) – Skyezxmessage 22:16, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

MonoBook help

Hi. I am using the MonoBook skin. The links in printable versions of Wikipedia articles do not show up with a blue color as they do when I am viewing the page on my browser; the links show up black like regular text. Is there a simple procedure that someone would like to share with me to make the printable version pages show blue hyperlinks. Some of the other skins seem to have this feature, but I like the MonoBook skin. The reason for this whole thing is when I read printed out versions of articles, the links tell me that I can get more information about a certain topic. Without the links being blue, I have no idea (from the printed article) if there is a Wikipedia article on certain topics. I am using Firefox 3 and don't know much (if anything) about CSS language or changing user variables, etc. Thank you for any help. --Edge0 (talk) 03:24, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

Stub help template

This isn't technically a user page, but I think it's an even more worthy cause: an easy to read template informing new users of how to write a stub... There are several problems so far, namely:

 • It's butt-ugly, except for the template (stolen from User:Phaedriel
 • The headings within the template show up in the TOC of the talk page it's projected onto
 • everything posted below it is automatically centered on the talk page...

Here is the template:

(End of template)

Please take a look. Thanks, Lithoderm 15:57, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

Re: *It's butt-ugly, except for the template - I don't really know how to fix that. Ugly is subjective. Do you have something in mind? One thing I can suggest is that you use a consistent colour scheme instead of random splashes of red/green/blue.
Re: *The headings within the template show up in the TOC of the talk page it's projected onto - That's a consequence of using wikicode headings. Instead of using wikicode, you can use <p style="margin: 0; padding-top: .5em; padding-bottom: .17em; border-bottom: 1px solid #aaa; font-size: 150%"></p> instead of ==.

Re: *everything posted below it is automatically centered on the talk page... - That's because you've forgotten to close one of the div tags. Add another </div>.
If you're unclear about anything, ask away - I think this stuff is fun. =)Skyezxmessage 00:45, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

Hello, I'm at the top of the page. Lithoderm 18:40, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

How do I create subpages

I really did try my best and checked on the available help on WP. I can still not work it out. How do I create subpages. I looked in Wikipedia:User page#How do I create a user subpage? but that doesn't tell me HOW to do it only that I CAN do it. I am not asking you to do it for me because I would like to learn how to do it myself. Greatly appreciate your help. Please inform me on my talkpage that an answer has been posted.--Josh Is Dead (talk) 21:10, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

You're quite right, the section which apparently tells you how to create a user subpage actually doesn't! It's something which took me a little bit of time to find out, too.
When you are viewing your own userpage, the website address will be a pretty simple http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Josh_Is_Dead. From there, to create a subpage of your userpage, use the address bar to type in the name of the desired page. You will need a forward slash (/) after your username. So if you wanted to create a Sandbox subpage, you would add /Sandbox after "Josh_Is_Dead". The final result would look like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Josh_Is_Dead/Sandbox. Once you have the desired page name typed in the address bar, just press return, or click go, or whatever. It will navigate to userspace, Josh's page, and to the subpage of Josh's pages, Sandbox. It will tell you that no page exists, of course, but once you are there you can create it. Once you've created it, that's it, it's there for good until you ask to have it deleted.
Your subpage can be pretty much anything you want it to be. For example, see here for a list of my subpages. Some editors have many many more! If you've created a few subpages and want to see the list, there is a link called "Subpages" at the very bottom of everyone's contributions page.
Hope that helps! Maedin\talk 07:59, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi Lyrical Israfel! Your user page and your talk page work just fine! A red link on Wikipedia means that the page has not been created yet, but the pages are there and yours to start. You'll notice that your talk page is now a blue link, because I've given you a little welcome there, :-) If you want to get started on your user page, then you can click on your user name (either here in this post, or via the links at the top right of the Wikipedia interface) and add whatever content you feel like adding about yourself, and then save. Et voilà! Your user page has been created and will now have a blue link instead of a red one. In case you haven't seen the page yet, here's a link to a quick guide to user page content. You can give it a read, :-) Hope that helps, let us know if you have any other questions. Maedin\talk 16:09, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

Hi, could someone help me with my user page? If I could have a simple one that I could fill in that would be fantastic! The Wurdalak (talk) 13:54, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

Need help, please!

Hi, I've been always an avid Wikipedia searcher as to I even search things that I'm interested and research from there out. The only problem is that I've decided to create, on behalf of an organization that is apart of an educational institute, to make a wikipedia page. Unfortunately, when I made the attempt, it says I'm "promoting" or claiming that I'm advertising. I understand why I had to change my name because it was a affiliated with the actual school, but it a well-known university can have fraternities and other organizations on their user page, how come I can't link and make one up that benefits all of its students? Our Mission Statement is exactly as follows: To provide free *confidential* (meaning doesn't conflict with legal issues) information, advocacy and support to Students, Faculty and Staff who may be victims or survivors of crime, violence or abuse on or off the UCF campus. We are not even a non-profit organization: UCF Victim Services. We are an educational facility. I could really use some help, especially since I'm totally new to Wikipedia and its design. VSKnights (talk)) 1:44 PM, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

Hi VSKnights! You've placed this request on a page dedicated to helping with user pages and actual design (i.e. coding) of Wikipedia pages. The best place for your question is probably the Help desk, where experienced editors assist new users. The reason I can't help you much here is because I am not an administrator (and therefore cannot see deleted material) and this page doesn't receive very much traffic, so an administrator may not see it for some time. Therefore, I encourage you to make a post at the help desk, repeating your issue with the article you tried to create.
However, what I can tell you is that there is a difference between creating a page that gives factual information on an organisation, and creating promotional material for an organisation. It's possible (though I can't confirm it) that the tone of the article came across as advertising, and therefore qualified for deletion. An administrator would be able to provide you with more advice though, so the help desk is the best place for you, ;-) Hope that helps at least a little bit! Good luck. Maedin\talk 18:28, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
I've had a look at the page (it was at User:UCF VictimServices) and I think the problem is that Wikipedia isn't a good place to promote your organisation. We focus more on subjects that are already well known. If you become more notable in the future, someone independent from you might create a page. Thank you anyway for contributing to Wikipedia.
