Scoring a try in rugby union[edit]

In rugby union, can a try be scored by just touching the ball against the post or does it have to touch the intersection of the ground and post. Hack (talk) 14:02, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Try#Variations_specific_to_rugby_union states "The goal-posts and padding at ground level are part of the goal line and therefore of the in-goal, so a try may be scored by grounding the ball at the foot of the posts." (bold mine). Hope that helps. --Jayron 32 15:05, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The actual law doesn't mention the bit about the foot of the posts, hence the question. I'm trying to work whether "grounding" is meant to mean literally touching the ground.[1] Hack (talk) 15:34, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

[According to the World Rugby Laws site http://laws.worldrugby.org/?law=22&language=EN], "The goal posts and padding surrounding them are part of the goal line, which is part of in-goal. If an attacking player is first to ground the ball against a goal post or padding, a try is scored."
