An old story about a fantasy land and magic fuel[edit]

Does anyone know of this old story? I'm having trouble finding it. A family were low on petrol\fuel and then they met an old petrol pump and parking attendant on a woodland road. The fuel turned out to be magic fuel as when they set off, they are surrounded by fog. The father honks three times and the fog is lifted transporting them to a magical land. After adventures in this magical land they run out of fuel, where the fog rolls in in and the father remembers what to do. However, the mysterious petrol station is no longer there.
