Sumo[edit]

You're right. User pages are better. I had the honor of meeting Akebono several times, and he was a total sweetheart. Very gentle and respectful to all. I'm jealous that you got to see Musashimaru's promotion. I only made it to two tournament days--one in Nagoya and one in Osaka, but was also in Hokkaido and Tohoku one year for the promotional tour. I watched faithfully on TV though, every televised minute--wish we got the sumo feed where I am now.

Agreed on this afternoon's work. Very worthwhile. I've been watching the back and forth blanking/restoring for a few weeks, and am glad I finally got involved today. -Jmh123 21:34, 2 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sumo project proposal[edit]

You might also want to notify WikiProject Sports and frequent editors of sumo and sumo related articles, if you haven't already done so. I moved the sumo to the proper place in alphabetical order as requested on the page. Here's the link: Wikipedia:WikiProject_Council/Proposals#Sumo Just looking at the responses there to other proposals, I think you would enhance your proposal if you were to add to it a list of the sumo-related articles; otherwise it may seem to some as if "sumo" itself is the only relevant article. It would indicate what the scope of the project would be, and you'd need such a list anyway if the project were approved. -Jmh123 18:05, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good work[edit]

Excellent work on the additions to the proposal. -Jmh123 21:16, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Graduate unemployment[edit]

Hi. I think it can be redirected and merged into the article unemployment. I wouldn't delete a topic like this.Page Up 22:31, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The suggestion to merge "graduate unemployment" with "unemployment" sounds good to me. However, new sourced contributions on the topic "graduate unemployment" are welcome and required to improve it. Page Up 17:07, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Stadium names[edit]

There is a discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football#Sponsored stadium names about how to deal with temporary sponsor names. Mostly, it seems to use the old (no sponsor) name for the article. I personally think that all articles should be at the non-sponsor names (ie, Big Swan; Osaka Dome; etc) too. The 2006 World Cup may list the alternative names, because such a big deal was made about it since a few stadia did not have a non-sponsor names (Thus, all of the stadiums named "FIFA World Cup Stadion . . .") In Yokohama's and Niigata's case, the stadia have official non-sponsor names. Also, for individual matches, the pages like 2006 FIFA World Cup - Group A, where each match listing only shows the name of the stadium for the tournament. In the edits I made last night to the Japan team page, etc, it is more like those than of the page for the entire tournament.

sumo projects[edit]

Yeah, Maegashira should be included, too now that you mention it. The sanyaku article and all the ranks could be redirected there. I think the divisions article came out looking nice, and I think this will too. I might get around to it soon. If I don't, feel free to take a crack at it. Malnova 00:05, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again, I went in and put in Asashoryu's filled in table in place of Kotonishi's on the project page. I know you probably wanted to emphasize that there is work to be done by showing Kotonishiki's mostly empty table. But the format of the table has come along since the version on the project page. And, actually, at this point there are no unfinished tables. Hope you don't mind.

Akebono[edit]

Sorry, I'm not an admin. I've been watching, but I think things are not to the point where the article needs to be protected. So sorry about the good article evalation situation; the timing was not good. Just be patient; the moment will come again. Of course, things could turn out better than you think. I think more could be added about how he first got involved in sumo, and about his status as the first foreign yokozuna. Beefing up the part of the article regarding his sumo career is one way to counteract the imbalance some are trying to place on the later part of his career after he left sumo. ETA: I just looked on talk and saw your earlier version very conveniently provided. As it is fully sourced, I've replaced the later version with yours. I'll keep watching and help when I can. And by the way, the sumo project looks great. I'm really impressed. I'm sorry I just haven't had time to participate. Jmh123 19:24, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

An addition--just looking over the entry and history a bit more. The Mainichi Daily News isn't a tabloid, IMO--I used to read it every day. In looking at that article that was cited, I see that this hasn't been covered.

In August last year, he joined All Japan Pro-Wrestling, a troupe run by grappler Keiji Muto. After traveling with the troupe for a while, he came away with a reputation for having 'some latent ability' and wrestling insiders began to see a role for the ex-yokozuna."

In January, Akebono moved from Muto's world to join New Japan Pro-Wrestling, Japan's biggest wrestling competition, even though he did so "on loan."

"In a fight at Sapporo Dome on Feb. 5, he ended up beating legend Hiroyoshi Tenzan, albeit through a technical foul. He used that massive body of his really well and you could see he was becoming a bit more confident," a reporter for a professional wrestling magazine tells Shukan Taishu. "When he wrestled again in Tokyo on Feb. 19, he stood up to the likes of current IWGP champion Brock Lesnar, which shows he's at least got the look down pat. He's really become like a fish that had been on dry land but is now back in the water:

I'm sorry that I just don't have time to do it myself, but it looks like some of this should be included in some way. Although over a year old, it suggests that he has had some success, at least in Japan. Is the Japanese record not "allowed" on the mixed martial arts chart? -Jmh123 03:59, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

yokozuna disambig[edit]

Thanks for changing my yokozuna redirect to a disambig page to cover that pro wrestler. I knew I needed to do this, but I got careless and forgot about it. Malnova 21:53, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

consolidating stubs[edit]

I think consolidating pre-meiji or even pre-WWII yokozuna is an excellent idea. I hate stubs (they just look, so, you know, stubby), most especially when they are going to stay stubs. A lot of these yokozuna are never going to get a look from more than a few stray viewers. But if they are on such a list, they may get some exposure, especially if we strategically place a few links to such a consolidated article here and there. User:Pawnkingthree worked to fill out the older yokozuna on the yokozuna list, but I think he would be agreeable, as his work is very likely going to get more exposure that way. It would be good to consider other areas we could consolidate. I was wondering if gyoji, yobidashi, and tokoyama and the like couldn't be consolidated - but some of these articles are actually pretty well-developed, so it could be overkill. Malnova 22:24, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, it's very difficult, if not impossible, for some articles to attain GA. Pro wrestling articles, for example. There has to be so much effort and research put into these because so much of the information is copyrighted. Wrestlers sign confidentiality contracts, matches are copyrighted against reproduction in video, audio, and print. It's such a difficult task to construct an article on such a limited amount of information. In the case of this article, it's a lack of sources in a particular language, which I'm sure is equally as frustrating.

I'm not familiar with the other versions of Wikipedia, but is there perhaps an article already existent in Japanese? I don't even know if there is a Japanese version. If there is, a translation request can be made, I believe. Also, this made me take notice of the fact that there is no mention of when he moved to Japan in the article. It just states that he was born in Hawaii, and that's it. Without these kinds of details, the article just isn't broad enough to achieve GA. Regards, LaraLove 18:21, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Right to privacy[edit]

Thanks for the links. Very interesting reading. The Warren & Brandeis article is fascinating and a reminder that this is an old issue. The thing that I suppose I'm most likely to get up on my soap box about isn't privacy per se, but rather the gossipy tone of the media today, the lack of accuracy in reporting, the tendency to distort and sensationalize. Oftentimes the media not only invades privacy, but deliberately fabricates. Too many people seem to think everything they heard from shock jocks on the way to work, read at Perez Hilton, or in the National Enquirer is actually true. GRRRR. Such ignorance! How do you train people, in this gossip driven world, that so much of the stuff they hear and read is pure fabrication, or at best, distortion? I was astounded to come to Wikipedia a few years ago and find that so many people actually believe gossip and/or believe Wikipedia should be filled with it!! In the case of Akebono, people want to emphasize and distort his current wrestling defeats and financial problems, and don't care at all about the bulk of his personal history, his amazing accomplishments in the world of sumo. Oh well. So thanks again! -Jmh123 20:53, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I was just re-reading through the AfD for Chess Rules, and I saw you make this point. The same editor who is trying to get these articles for chess deleted also used similar tactics and arguments to get Glossary of sumo terms. It seems picking and choosing articles to prove a point goes against WP:POINT the way I just read it. Anyways, hopefully someone will close the chess rules AfD soon. XinJeisan 13:39, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That's interesting that this user has made nominations like this before and even in the face of consensus against his silly interpretation of WP:NOT continues to do so. I thought perhaps he was just another misguided deletionist who overstepped, but if he keeps this up in the face of an overwhelming consensus that he is wrong, it will definitely be getting into WP:POINT territory. --JayHenry 16:54, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Rules of Chess[edit]

In response to a comment you left on my talk page, I'd have to say that I think that people should definitely continue posting the same argument repeatedly to the AfD discussion, as it helps make the page longer and more difficult to understand. But no, on a serious note, I think it's good when people continually post responses to similar arguments (or, indeed, the same argument), as while their position may not change, over time their position may evolve, or they may find better ways to express them. Just so long as it doesn't become hopelessly redundant, or turn into some kind of spitting match, I don't think it does any harm. Still, it's probably not entirely necessary, as the participants of the discussion have generally reached a consensus, with the only dissent coming from the original nominator for deletion. Nicholas John Baker[edit]

Archived per your request. Best, J Readings 05:54, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the much appreciated kind words on the Nicholas John Baker talk page. Sadly, the gaijin article is far from done yet. The research is taking a lot of time at the libraries, and I don't know what will happen in the end because of strict NOR policies regarding synthesis. Thankfully, I don't see WP:NOR being a real problem for the Nicholas John Baker article. J Readings 00:48, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Louis Carlet[edit]

Xinjeisan, in ragards to you post on Nandesuka's talk page, I think it's a valid question - where do labor leaders fit into the WP:BIO matrix, and what's the high bar for inclusion. There are many BLP articles about union organizers who are known for their actions while in a union but there no standards addressing inclusion criteria. Comparing Carlet to a local government official isn't a direct comparison and the reason Nandesuka gave for the 'Speedy Keep' was a bad faith nomination. I am considering raising the issue of union organizers on the WP:BIO talk page to try and get some feedback and would hope that you will comment on it.Statisticalregression 19:09, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I ended up discussing the issue with someone who has BLP experiance on my talk page Statisticalregression 23:31, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Reconsider?[edit]

Hey XinJeisan, wouldn't you reconsider your withdrawal? I, of course, don't know your reasons for withdrawing, but your contributions for the sumo presence on wikipedia are invaluable. Malnova 05:35, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I know where you are coming from on the wikibreak. And letting others know your intentions makes you more likely to stick with your resolve (at least it does in my experience). I swore off wikipedia ages ago, and then the idea for how to make a keen sumo tournament table hit me and....maybe I should take a break after the next basho... Well, if I may be partisan, Kotomitsuki is my favorite. I have loved that guy since I first saw him enter makuuchi. Interestingly enough, I have met a man mentioned on your user page, "Louis Carlet", a few times, though I have little opinion about whether he deserves an article or not. I suppose a lot of foreigners in Tokyo see him as something of an inspiration. Malnova 07:22, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

See, this exchange is all part of my plan to keep you here. Hee. Would love to go see a basho with wikipedians, but currently, of the four people currently doing the vast majority of the editing for sumo on wikipedia, I am the only one currently living here (sniff). On the job front: I have similar experiences and conclusions about the future of fair employment for foreign workers in Japan; though part of me knows I should fight the good fight.. Anyway, try to enjoy your time off the nipple. Malnova 08:06, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

I saw your edit removing the "fled the airport" ref. If you look at the source you will see it in the 3rd paragraph from the end. Cheers. David Lyons 07:16, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

However, I agree with your edit and was going to do it myself today. I agree it is POV (whether or not a newspaper used it).
Now for the reason I came to your page. Good luck on your break but it is too bad for the rest of us, as your contributions have been very helpful. Thanks a lot! --Slp1 12:48, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
