If so, please note that licenses that restrict the use to Wikipedia, only permit non-commercial use, or prohibit making of derivative works are not considered free enough for Wikipedia. Please re-upload it, and mark it with a tag indicating a free license (such as GFDL, Creative Commons attribution, or attribution-sharealike license; see a list of available image copyright tags), or a release into public domain, i.e. with no restrictions of use. In general, images found on outside websites cannot be uploaded to Wikipedia. Some websites do publish their material under a free license; however, commercial press agencies normally don't. The fair use policy allows for inclusion of some unfree images in articles; in particular, when the unfree image either significantly contributes to an article in a way that could not be replaced by a free one (for example, use of a limited amount of film screenshots in an article about an actor, such as Elijah Wood, for illustration of his roles is acceptable), or when a free image could not be reasonably made (for example, the article about Jack Chick contains a drawing which is not under a free license and this was found to be acceptable since Jack Chick does not appear in public). The images you have uploaded didn't meet these guidelines (they were unfree images that were used merely to show what the still living person looks like; such images are usually replaceable with a free one some user of Wikipedia could make), and they were falsely marked as self-made even though you were not the author. I have reviewed some of the other files you have uploaded, and I don't understand in what way the file is "self-made".

• Do you claim that you really own copyright to the recording and are in a position to release it under GFDL and Creative Commons licenses? In that case, I (and the Wikimedia Foundation) would like to see a confirmation from Afroman that it is indeed the case.
• Did you make the recording at some concert? In that case, I am afraid you cannot upload it to Wikipedia under any license, since you don't own copyright to it. (Just like if you did yourself the work of re-typing the whole text of the Lord of the Rings, it doesn't mean that you can GFDL-license it; it would still be under the original copyright.)
• Did you get it from some website, or CD, or a similar source? In that case, the claim that the file is self-made is untrue, and again, you can't publish it under any license.

Well, it's not like I was particularly angry; however, you repeatedly failed to understand what I told you, so I had to be blunt. Wikipedia has its copyright policy, which it takes quite seriously in order a) not to put the project in legal jeopardy and b) not to compromise its goal of a free-content encyclopedia. In particular, in your last request you esentially asked me to undelete your image (or let you upload it) with false copyright information, which is absolutely not tolerated.

In order for an image to be considered free enough for Wikipedia, the license it is under must allow third-party commercial use and creation of derivative works. Images that are not under such a license, nor in public domain (i.e. the copyright has expired, or the work was legally exempt from copyright) can only be used as provided by the fair use exception. And as I have told you, if the unfree image could be reasonably replaced by a free image that a Wikipedian could make, the exception does not apply (and, conversely, if you believe that the unfree image can be used, you should be able to explain why it couldn't be reasonably replaced).

Finally, if an image appears somewhere on the net and is not accompanied by a copyright notice, it doesn't mean that you can assume it is in public domain or under a free license. You can ask the author to release it under a free license; for instructions, look here.

Hi O.waqfi, for a living person, the only way for you to keep an uploaded picture on Wikipedia is to:

1) Take the picture yourself, or

2) Have someone else take it and release it under a license (Acquire a free image)

There are some exceptions to the above, but it's a little complicated. I'm sorry you had photos deleted, and I see that you have uploaded Image:DSC008934.JPG. Those licenses look ok, as does the public domain license of Image:DSC00899.JPG.

Take care that you don't use those licenses for pictures you did not take, unless you can clearly show that the owner has truly released them, as declared in the license. (verifiable emails from the owner of the pic for instance). R. Baley (talk) 16:23, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

Image sources

Some Flickr images are acceptable on Wikipedia. A Flickr user can decide what license to submit his images under: if it's "Creative Commons Attribution" or "Creative Commons Attribution Sharealike", then yes, you can upload the image to Wikipedia; if it's "Non-commercial", "Non-derivative", or "All rights reserved", then the license isn't free enough for Wikipedia, and generally can't be used (except as provided by the fair use policies and guidelines). (If the image page contains a crossed dollar or an equal sign, or the text "all rights reserved", it is an indication that the image is not under a sufficiently free license. You can ask the author to release it under a free license; since Flickr does not support changing of a license for a single image, the best way would be for the author to post a declaration that "notwithstanding any statement to the contrary on this page, I, creator of this image, hereby license it under Creative Commons Attribution [Or: Creative Commons Attribution Sharealike] license", or e-mail the Wikipedia Foundation to confirm the licensing; see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for more details.)

As for Youtube, the trouble is that the uploaders of videos often don't own copyright to them (and as such they do it - at least technically - against the law). For this reason, the website can't be used as a source of free images. (It could be used as a source of TV screenshots; however, you must be able to identify the program/film/etc. where the screenshot came from, and the article must discuss his appearance there - the image can't be used merely to illustrate what the person looks like, and it must significantly contribute to the article.)

Looks like Mike already helped you, but just to add, we prefer images that are under an acceptable free-use license or are in the public domain. When this isn't possible, sometime a copyrighted image can be used under fair use, but this is a last resort, and is explained at Wikipedia:Non-free content. Again, I am afraid the answer is "probably not".

• It doesn't list the exact page where the image can be located. (And, please, don't break the URL by adding extraneous spaces in it.)
• It doesn't identify what show or movie the screenshot came from, if it is even a screenshot at all.
• It doesn't significantly contribute to the article beyond showing what the person looks like, and the article does not discuss his appearance in his shows and movies in any meaningful way. (Compare it with the Elijah Wood article.) Since the subject is still alive, the image can be reasonally replaced with a free one somebody else can make. (See our fair use policy.)
• It contains no fair use rationale (i.e. an explanation why you believe it can be used in accordance with the fair use policies and guidelines).

As I have previously told you, the problem is that the article doesn't discuss the roles he played in the shows (including Grounded for Life) in any meaningful way; as such, the unfree image doesn't significantly contribute to the article and could be replaced with a free one that another user could make. (The fact that a free image isn't currently available on Wikipedia is not sufficient to retain the unfree one.) If you dispute my claim that the image isn't usable in accordance with the fair use policy (at least, not now), please state your point at the deletion page here. - Mike Rosoft (talk) 17:01, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

Marhaba. Ya reit. But there is a huge debate about the issue. For now, the agreement is to confine the page on Palestinian people to a discussion of the people themselves, rather than the issue of Palestine. Notice that the first sentence does say that Palestinian people or Palestinian Arabs are an Arabic speaking people with family origins in Palestine. Discussion of Palestine the land and its history is left to the other article. This one focuses just on the people. I know it seems crazy, but that's where we are right now.

Hey, yes, both my parents are from Nazareth, which is where I live with my husband (no kids yet). The only non-Palestinian in the family is my grandmother whose family is from Homs in Syria. I try to edit Palestine-related articles. It's my passion. But it is really challenging because of all the people who want to deny that we exist. It took four months to get the word "a" before people in the first sentence of the introduction to Palestinian people. Originally, I was hoping to add nation instead, but some people who deny that we are anything but Arabs, refused to allow that to happen. Because Wikipedia works by WP:CONSENSUS, people can block changes to articles, even when based on reliable sources. Crazy, isn't it? But that's the way collobrative editing works.

Where are you from? I'm glad to see another Arab editor around here. Funkynusayri (talk · contribs) is a good one around here. If you ever need any help or advice, please don't hesitate to ask.

Aaah. I see what you're asking about now. I'm not so good with coding, so I don't know how to answer your question. Also, you need to be more specific about where you want to introduce the colours (on your user page, in your user name, etc.) A good place to ask for help might be here. They will either answer your question or direct you to another area where someone else can. Do be specific about where you want to introduce the colours though. I don't share my real name with other Wikipedia editors, but have grown to like being called Tiamut. :) I don't have an arabic Wiki account because my written Arabic is not as good as my English, since I studied at English universities. Plus, I feel that writing about Palestinian and Arab issues for an English-speaking audience is more important, given the lack of neutral information about us in the English-speaking world. Thank you for the wishes. No, I'm not from Jordan, but the topic on Arab-Israeli peace initiatives is interesting, and I was surprised that this article does not exist yet. I see you are from Jordan. Would you be having any photographs on a QIZ that I can add to this page? I searched quite a bit for images but did not have any luck on finding free images that satisfy Wikipedia's policies. Amman Workshop 11-12 April 2012

This research project (which I am part of) is looking for participants for a workshop in Amman in April. The workshop is about representation of and by the Middle East and North Africa, in various language Wikipedias, and looking at barriers to contribution and ways to overcome them

In particular we are interested in those who edit from or about the Middle East, either extensively, or who have been discouraged from editing more due to on-wiki issues.
