Welcome!

Trying to reach very respected editor named ShoreKeep: I had participated in Wikipedia editing years ago only to be frustrated by the excessive rules and mysterious editors who deleted content that was properly cited on Wikipedia. Facts about military equipment that were cited on documentary television programs and from military officers mysteriously was removed by anonymous editors I traced back to the U.S. Navy at Coronado. There were other examples. I began to suspect that many topics of national interest were controlled by government interests and used for disinformation purposes. The discussion of Fukushima would be such a topic. I do not know if you are a disinformation specialist for sure, but in any case my information on Fukushima comes from National Geographic and other sources. I find the freak underground as you call it to be more reputable on some topics than Wikipedia. Are you going to throw the "tinfoil hat" label at me as well? That is a popular tactic used to attempt to discredit those with information not in line with the status quo. National Geographic ranked Fukushima as the biggest and worst nuclear accident in history, eclipsing Chernobyl. I have the article reference if you want. At this point, 6 years later, the total emission of dangerous radioactive isotopes exceeds Chernobyl by far, and it is still burning. I do not think you would disagree with that. I do not have time to commit to research on Wikipedia, only to have it mysteriously deleted months later. I find Wikipedia to be useful on many topics for light information, but not authoritative for anything. Sorry. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.240.172.212 (talk) 02:58, 6 January 2017 (UTC) [reply]

Nuclear test tables[edit]

Hi!
I noticed your recently created articles on Soviet nuclear tests and went through them and fixed a few consistent typos (e.g. "Semiplatinsk" => "Semipalatinsk"). While doing so, I noticed that the table you're using could be improved a bit:

  • Put the table notes into a "note" group. This keeps them footnotes but distinguishes them from actual references.
  • Skip the "in Curies, with metric prefixes" bit in the venting notes. Units are given in the table, and it's always better to just add a conversion to SI.
  • "(and yes, they are all metric units)" feels a bit too informal for an encyclopedia. Something like "(all metric units)" should suffice.

I went ahead and implemented these changes in 1966 Soviet Nuclear Tests.
Cheers. Kolbasz (talk) 15:38, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Kolbasz. I've implemented your suggestions (and also corrected Semipalatinsk's misspell), and they should show up in the pages that haven't yet been done - I did 1967, -8, and -9 this afternoon. Regards, SkoreKeep (talk) 22:05, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Operation Fishbowl[edit]

I noticed that you've added the Line Islands to Johnston Island as being involved in the Operation Fishbowl nuclear tests. I don't understand the rationale for adding the Line Islands. All of the launches were done from Johnston Island. There were ships and aircraft involved from many areas across the Pacific, but I don't remember ever reading of any unusually significant involvement from the Line Islands.

On a related matter, the "location" of nuclear tests in the new tables causes consistent confusion about rocket launched tests when the launch points are stated in words, followed immediately by the coordinates of the detonation, without further explanation. This was a significant problem in the Soviet K Project article, and it is still a bit of a problem in the Operation Fishbowl article. It would leave the impression that Johnston Island moved around a few hundred miles during 1962.

I believe that there were 25 Soviet nuclear tests launched by rocket, and I can think of 11 United States nuclear tests launched by rocket (and one by balloon). In all of these cases, the location is going to be different, sometimes substantially, between the launch and detonation points. X5dna (talk) 11:12, 19 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmmmm. Somewhere I got the impression that Johnston Island was one of the Line Islands. Certainly have to fix that.
Fixed it. See Operation Dominic.
Yeah, I've been contemplating what to do about the rocket thing. The example that came first to mind was Swordfish, which was launched and exploded in open waters, 1200 miles apart. For the moment all I can say is that the lat/lon tags are always the explosions. I guess I've got to rethink how exactly the "wordy" descriptions happen, and what to do to make them work consistently, at least among rocket launches. I really need to highlight both the locations. Give me a few days to think on it, and I'll get back to the talk page for it.
Thanks for stirring up the bees here; I needed that!! SkoreKeep (talk) 11:42, 19 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed that. See Soviet Project K nuclear tests. SkoreKeep (talk) 05:46, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Using capitals on Wikipedia[edit]

Hi, and thanks for your work. Could you please read WP:MOSCAP and correct your use of capitals? Thanks a lot. --John (talk) 22:20, 21 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I noticed the "Explosions" thing this morning and changed my template. I noted your other changes to the Soviet K project, and am making those changes as well. The next updates I'll be doing are the Soviet series, starting with 1949-51, so check that one out later today and back me up on it, if you will. Crossroads is a special deal, what with the featured article designation, so you're having done that is good. I won't be able to get back around to all the US pages again for a week or so (I just finished sweeping them this morning), but they'll get updated for this in due course. Thanks for the help. WP:EASTEREGG.[edit]

Hi there,

Don't worry: The EasterEgg concept is pretty easy to get the hang of. Basically, a link to "X" should be called "X". If it's called "Y", when the user gets to that tab, they may ask "Where did this article 'Y' come from? I don't remember clicking a link to 'Y'". And of course, they didn't; they clicked a link to "X".

The purpose of piped links is generally to alter syntax to match the surrounding sentence structure; they're not for giving a link a different name from the attached article.

Draft[edit]

Hello SkoreKeep. It has been over six months since you last edited your WP:AFC draft article submission, entitled "Subcritical nuclear tests".

The page will shortly be deleted. If you plan on editing the page to address the issues raised when it was declined and resubmit it, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}} or {{db-g13}} code. Please note that Articles for Creation is not for indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you want to retrieve it, copy this code: {{subst:Refund/G13|Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Subcritical nuclear tests}}, paste it in the edit box at this link, click "Save page", and an administrator will in most cases undelete the submission.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. JMHamo (talk) 19:21, 23 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Precession of perihelion[edit]

Thank you for your interest in editing articles related to planets. Please consider removing the perihelion precession information from planet infoboxes. All six orbital elements have complicated variations in time, and there is no obvious reason for singling out the argument of pericenter. In addition, the variations are very small and are applicable only at the current epoch, so the numbers as currently listed are somewhat distracting and misleading. If you feel that the numbers must be listed somewhere, consider adding a table to the apsidal precession article. Thank you. JeanLucMargot (talk) 16:56, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Maintained template changes[edit]

Hello. I've been going through the entire Category:Maintained articles listing to remove and/or clean up old {{Maintained}} templates. In doing so I saw your postings which had additional info on them. Of the several hundred I'd looked at, yours were the only ones with this info. So I assumed the data was non parameter stuff and I removed it. With apologies, I confess that your postings were correct. Still, I do not think the additional material is helpful. A reader/editor would have had to know that the template allowed for such added info. So, with this in mind, I've removed the instructions from the template documentation that allowed such data. I hope you will understand and accept my apologies. If you have ideas on how to improve the template, please post them. Thanks. – S. Rich (talk) 04:23, 27 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. I don't argue the accuracy of your edit, but neither do I acknowledge it. I do not find an error in your analysis, but I've twice said I don't have the expertise to say it is either valid or flawed. It is incumbent on you to supply an authoritative reference for it. Until you do, it is only your word that the argument applies and does not have its own flaws. If you are an authority, then you need to cite a reference in your own work which anyone can look up. Bottom line, wikipedia will not be your soapbox. See WP:NOR for guidance. You've made the edits twice now; please counter my reasons for reverting rather than reiterating your changes. SkoreKeep (talk) 11:33, 23 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope

This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

Looking for French Nuclear test events from 1992 to 1994[edit]

I might be missing it - but could you help me find this data? Thanks I love your research - terribly useful to place these events on the general history timeline. Marie Well — Preceding unsigned comment added by Googlewell (talkcontribs) 00:14, 16 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Marie, the French did not test any bombs between 7/15/1991 (Lycurgue) and 9/5/1995 (Téthys). That was the beginning of their last series, while others had stopped testing because of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. Nothing to look at there. Thanks for the kind words. The Vela Flash: Forty Years Ago[edit]

National Security Archive's recent publication, Briefing Book #686, Published on Sep 22, 2019 and titled The Vela Flash: Forty Years Ago will be of interest to you. The briefing book includes recent document declassification. "CIA Saw Probability of a Nuclear Test as 90% Plus," "Additional Evidence Casts Doubts on White House Science Advisers’ Dismissal of Possibility of a Nuclear Test"

link: https://nsarchive.gwu.edu/briefing-book/nuclear-vault/2019-09-22/vela-flash-forty-years-ago

I leave comment to you as an interested party on the mystery of the flash; apparently solved. I am currently topic banned from discussing weapons or editing weapons subjects (long story). Since there is now apparently only a 10% probability of the incident not being weapon test related, I feel that should not edit or comment on the subject further than this message. I hope this information helps our efforts to improve Wikipedia articles. Thank you, Johnvr4 (talk) 21:19, 22 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the information, Johnvr4. I'll review all the evidence and the article in a bit I'm tied up with several other priorities at the moment, so it may be a couple of months before I can get to it, and I'll let you know what I think about it. Again, thanks. SkoreKeep (talk) 06:47, 23 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Radiation[edit]

What are the differences between the radiation article text and the diagram File:Alfa beta gamma radiation penetration.svg? Hyacinth (talk) 00:24, 20 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Well, actually, the promise of a further discussion in the caption of the diagram is empty; I could find no further discussion in the article.
Note that the caption says "typical" a lot. What it means is "typical for nuclear decay", because these particles also arrive on the planet from cosmic radiation sources, whatever they are (there's no total agreement), and these pack a lot more energy than those released by decay and are therefore far more penetrating. The second thing to mention is that the alpha and beta particles can be substantially stopped as indicated but the gamma rays work on a different principle and are not completely stopped by any shield; their penetration is spoken of as halved (see [half-value layer]) by given thicknesses of shielding. Engineers react to that by overkill - they reduce the intensity of the gamma rays to a thousandth of their original strength and consider that sufficient. That takes ten "half-thicknesses" of the shielding material; a little over a mile of dry air, for example, or 2 meters of water, or .45 meter for concrete. Note the assumption of the average energy of the radiation.

I undid you revert and your somewhat misplaced "somewhat" on the earthquake section of this article, I also reworded it a bit, I added a new ref, I added further detail (unreferenced completely i.e. referenced a bit, needs one more), expanded to include all explosions not just underground testing... any comments??? Do not revert, also I would like you to try to justify your removal of P wave's for us both, thank you. The Original Filfi (talk) 10:25, 7 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I get how a bomb explosion will only create a P wave, but as soon as it hits a discontinuity there will be sheer waves generated. You also cannot avoid the surface waves particularly in such a shallow event. Except for the missing sheer waves in the primary event, there is no difference between a bomb-caused shock and an earthquake. Or at least that is my understanding. Perhaps you know something I don't about the government's studies on bomb-caused shocks. My knowledge is straight sesimic science, somewhat dated. I appreciate youur expansion. SkoreKeep (talk) 12:52, 9 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Good reply, I think we are done here apart from a quick FYI, the difference is in the duration of the p wave production and detection, where an EQ even an apparent very small "jolt" may last at least ~50ms with peaks and troughs, an explosion occurs and ends in ~10ms in one large peak and no troughs.

As an aside was "youur expansion" a very dry joke?, maybe "youur expanssssion" more appropriate? lol, cheersThe Original Filfi (talk) 03:24, 10 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
