Removal of deletion tags from the target of an active deletion discussion

Please stop your large scale recategorisation of mathematicians. There should be some WP:CONSENSUS about how this. This is begining to look like a breach of WP:POINT and could lead to a block. Consider this a final warning before a block.--Salix alba (talk): 08:38, 31 March 2014 (UTC)

So far, the only responses to my edits have been either to (a) undo my edits, (b) nominate my content for deletion, or (c) threaten blocks. Isn't this supposed to be the encyclopedia that anyone can edit? It looks like I can only get new content in if I'm willing to spend hours policing my edits and arguing with you guys. I've responded on your talk page so as to keep the discussion in one place.--Salix alba (talk): 09:19, 31 March 2014 (UTC)

MathJax colors

You recently made some significant changes to the Help:Displaying a formula page. Amongst those were changes to the colors. I would just care to inform you that the broken colors are a bug that we accidentally recently introduced and did not notice. We accidentally removed the cancel and color extensions from the configuration. It will soon be fixed after this is merged and deployed, bugzilla:63574. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 15:53, 5 April 2014 (UTC)

Math demo

Hi,

I just wanted to point you to the demo of the Math extension 2.0 http://math2.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/Dedekind_sum

--Physikerwelt (talk) 16:37, 19 April 2014 (UTC)

@Physikerwelt: Cool. I've logged in but I can't seem to create a page getting "Fatal error: Call to a member function getTitle() on a non-object in /mnt/vagrant/mediawiki/extensions/MathSearch/MathObject.php on line 136". I've looked at some of the other pages there eg [1] which is full of various red messages. Hopefully these are minor bugs.--Salix alba (talk): 17:37, 19 April 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for testing that. The getTitle problem is realted to the MathSearch extension, which is just a research prototype with tons of bugs. On the page [2] I see two red links.
  1. Failed to parse(<math_latexml_invalidxml>): \pagecolor {Black}\color {Yellow}{\text{Yellow}} (and similar)
  2. Failed to parse(<math_latexml_invalidxml>): {\cfrac {x}{1+{\cfrac {{\cancel {y}}}{{\cancel {y}}}}}}={\cfrac {x}{2}}
I think those should be fixable by adjustint the matjax configuration. Are there more I did not see? --Physikerwelt (talk) 20:38, 20 April 2014 (UTC)
A lot better now. I had a lot of complaints about server failures the first time I looked at things.
Oh it looks like MathJax has problems displaying [3] the I'm getting
GET http://en.wikipedia.org/extensions/MathMenu.js 404 (Not Found)
GET http://en.wikipedia.org/extensions/MathZoom.js 404 (Not Found)
Any ideas?--Salix alba (talk): 21:07, 20 April 2014 (UTC)
Does that mean that MathJax does not work at en.wikipedia.org?--Physikerwelt (talk) 06:23, 21 April 2014 (UTC)
If it helps the error I get on math2.beta.wmflabs.org is "Failed to parse(MathML (with SVG fallback): Invalid response ('There was a problem during the HTTP request: 500 Internal Server Error') from server 'http://mathoid.eqiad.wmflabs:10042':): \scriptstyle n_{e}". I get this quite frequently hitting the random page button.--Salix alba (talk): 21:22, 20 April 2014 (UTC)
I think it's a problem of the mathoid servier. Loading the page with action=purge gain usually solves the issue. But I don't know what's wrong since the error disapears on the second atempt. --Physikerwelt (talk) 06:23, 21 April 2014 (UTC)
I've tracked down the problem with Help Formula a bit [4] is the smallest broken example.
Thanks the issue is related to the heading === MathJax === that produces an element with id="MathJax" it seems that MathJax does not like that.
I changed the timeout on the mathoid server... Now the domo creates better error messages. --Physikerwelt (talk) 08:07, 21 April 2014 (UTC)

Raincode COBOL deletion

Hi Salix.

Can you tell me why the IBM COBOL and the Unisys MCP pages are still on wikipedia ? You deleted the Raincode COBOL page for reasons(?), and not those two? Thank you for your help,

Regards, --Fontignie (talk) 09:27, 5 May 2014 (UTC)

Each page is deleted on its own merits RainCode COBOL was deleted following Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/RainCode COBOL (2nd nomination). There are very few mentions of it in web searches. So it failed Wikipedia:Notability. IBM COBOL on the other hand is one of the major versions of cobol with 4 million results in google search. While a very week article it could easily be expanded to pass. There is no page Unisys MCP this looks like it means either Burroughs MCP or Unisys MCP programming languages both of which would pass Wikipedia:Notability.--Salix alba (talk): 11:28, 5 May 2014 (UTC)

Citoid.js fixes

Hi. Thanks for your Citoid.js – it really speeds up cites. However, I was getting "undefined" for the month of |accessdate= and other problems with the |date= param, regardless of the date format chosen or URL I attempted to cite. While my js skills are pretty rusty, I did find and fix the problems in my local copy at User:AlanM1/scripts/Citoid.js.

One problem was in formatCS1Date() in its use of parseInt(), which regards any number with a leading '0' as octal. So, when it was given the month of '09' out of '2014-09-29', it became 0 because it tried to read it as an octal value, stopping when it encountered the '9'. Creating a Number() object from the string doesn't suffer this problem, and I streamlined things a bit more as well.

The problem with the |date= param was partially solved by this, but it was also necessary to get the value into the same ISO date format before calling formatCS1Date() on it. It's a little convoluted because there is no direct conversion to ISO format that doesn't attempt to apply a UTC/local time conversion, which would move the date by one; I think I've got it down to the best solution. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 01:21, 29 September 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing this out. I've a feeling it might be browser dependant. Using chrome and firefox parseInt('08') and parseInt('09') seem to work fine. I've added an explicit radix parameter to parseInt parseInt('08',10) to force the right interpretation.
Do you have examples where things don't work?--Salix alba (talk): 06:46, 29 September 2014 (UTC)
parseInt('08'), executed in the web console of Firefox 20.0.1 on Win7 x64, yields 0. However, IE 9.0.8112.16421 (64-bit) on the same system yields 8, though.

On an old WinXPSP3 system, Firefox 7.0.1, Chrome 16.0.912.77 m, and IE 8.0.6001.18702 all give 0.

Aside from that issue, though, I think my formatCS1Date() code is faster and simpler without the (seemingly unnecessary?) splitting into high/low digits, skipping all the logic in the YMD case, etc. I also used the date parsing in the Date() constructor to hopefully accommodate a wider range of source date formats for the |date= param. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 19:01, 29 September 2014 (UTC)

I read an interesting thread about this issue. I guess we're on the cusp of abandoning this behavior finally, as of ECMA-262 v5.1 (2011)), decades after ceasing manufacture of hardware for which octal was more convenient.

One interesting point made was that Number is a float by definition, while parseInt() attempts to return an integer only, and would seem to need to be less complex (faster) internally. Rewriting... —[AlanM1(talk)]— 20:45, 29 September 2014 (UTC)

Done. Now using parseInt(, 10) instead of Number. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 22:04, 29 September 2014 (UTC)

Using your script for www.thehindu.com/news/national/with-sena-out-of-nda-hectic-poll-campaign-awaits-pm/article6458697.ece, I get |date= values of NaN undefined Sept, undefined NaN, Sept, and Sept-mb-r for DMY, MDY, and YMD formats. My script correctly gets 29 September 2014, September 29, 2014, and 2014-09-29. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 01:36, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

The problem seems to be that we are getting inconsistent dates out of Citoid. Most of the time paramObj.date.wt is giving iso format dates but for the Hindu link, its giving "September 29, 2014", which broke the code. I've fix the code to cope with these two formats. I'm pinging @Mvolz: as this may affect the other things which depend on Citoid.--Salix alba (talk): 08:22, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
I don't know if that element is specified to be an ISO date. That's why I used the Date object instead, whose constructor flexibly parses a variety of date formats:
	d = new Date();	// Construct new Date object with current date
	// Now convert current date in UTC as ISO date string to desired date format
	// and set accessdate param with result:
	paramObj.accessdate = { 'wt': formatCS1Date(d.toISOString()) };

	// Construct new Date object, parsing date param in unknown format:
	var d2 = new Date(paramObj.date.wt);
	if (d2) {
		// If it was a valid date, use component local times to create an ISO date string
		// (can't use s2=d2.toISOString() because it applies local->UTC conversion):
		var s2 = (d2.getYear() + 1900).toString() + "-" +
    				((d2.getMonth() + 101).toString()).substr(1, 2) + "-" +
    				((d2.getDate() + 100).toString()).substr(1, 2);
		// Now convert ISO string to desired date format and set date param with result:
		paramObj.date.wt = formatCS1Date(s2);
	}
This guarantees that anything that gets passed to formatCS1Date() is definitely ISO, and allows the streamlined code in that function as well, instead of having to break things up into single digits:
    	// Input format
    	// 0123456789[01234567890123]
    	//"2014-09-28[T20:03:10.298Z]"
	if (style == "YMD")	// Already in correct format – just return date part
		return isodate.substr(0, 10);

	var monthIndex = parseInt(isodate.substr(5, 2), 10) - 1;	// Get month - 1
	var sday = parseInt(isodate.substr(8, 2), 10).toString();	// Get day of month as trimmed string
    	if (style == "MDY")
    		return messages[lang].monthnames[monthIndex] + " " + sday + ", " + isodate.substr(0, 4);
    	else	// DMY
    		return sday + " " + messages[lang].monthnames[monthIndex] + " " + isodate.substr(0, 4);

Citoid patch suggestion

Hi. this page has a title with a pipe in it, which results in a cite that is broken. This would also happen if it (or any other field) contained two closing braces. My fix is in buildTemplateCode(), c. line 294. Change

var wt = value.wt

to

var wt = value.wt.replace(/\|/g, "|").replace(/}}/g, "}}");

Can you think of any others? —[AlanM1(talk)]— 00:14, 16 October 2014 (UTC)

Math styling

In this edit you removed styling with the comment "remove vertical-align style from math tags which cause rendering problems in some configurations". Can you explain exactly what the problem is? You have also removed the scriptstyle, which has resulted in not only the math being misaligned but also ridiculously large for the surrounding text. SpinningSpark 10:18, 29 October 2014 (UTC)

The problem is that there are now several different methods for rendering maths. The old PNG rendering, MathJax, the new MathML with fallback SVG (MathML in firefox and SVG on other browsers). Eventually the system will move away from the PNG system. Each of these modes appears slightly differently.
The vertical-align and scriptstyle are basically workaround for the problems with the PNG renderer and have detrimental effects using the other systems. In particular the <math style="vertical-align:-10%;">B</math> is causing problems on the MathML in chrome causing equations to not appear at all.
I personally find the MathJax renderer to be the best visually, although there is a slight delay as its rendered by the client web browser. There is a wider discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Mathematics‎‎#MathML rendering available.--Salix alba (talk): 11:08, 29 October 2014 (UTC)
What a mess, there should be only one rendering system so that editors can see what our readers are going to get, or at least one recommended, default system. The png system is still the default, no? or has that changed? You say that -10% causes a problem, but the styling you removed was 0%. Does 0% cause a problem? If it doesn't, it should be allowed to remain to fix the png alignment issue. You still haven't said why you removed the scriptstyle. Was that an accident? SpinningSpark 17:01, 29 October 2014 (UTC)
Hopefully this will be a transitional phase. We've been stuck with a ten year old system with a lot of problems and this is a move towards a system which will provide quality maths rendering to all users. It is still quite new and needs testing.
Any argument to vertical-align currently cause problems there is a T74626 about this and I think it affect 50 odd pages. scriptstyle does not cause a problem but it renders thing a little too small with PNG and a lot too small in the other systems.
Possibly the best alternative in this case is to use {{math}} and {{mvar}} {{math|1={{mvar|τ}}={{mvar|RC}}}} which gives τ=RC. This is pure html, independent of the maths system used, and gets the size and baseline right.--Salix alba (talk): 17:54, 29 October 2014 (UTC)
Or we could just leave it as big ugly display font in the middle of inline text. SpinningSpark 00:51, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

The Editing team is asking for your help with VisualEditor. I am contacting you because you posted to a feedback page for VisualEditor. Please tell them what they need to change to make VisualEditor work well for you. The team has a list of top-priority problems, but they also want to hear about small problems. These problems may make editing less fun, take too much of your time, or be as annoying as a paper cut. The Editing team wants to hear about and try to fix these small things, too.

You can share your thoughts by clicking this link. You may respond to this quick, simple, anonymous survey in your own language. If you take the survey, then you agree your responses may be used in accordance with these terms. This survey is powered by Qualtrics and their use of your information is governed by their privacy policy.

More information (including a translateable list of the questions) is posted on wiki at mw:VisualEditor/Survey 2015. If you have questions, or prefer to respond on-wiki, then please leave a message on the survey's talk page.

Thank you, Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 15:56, 26 March 2015 (UTC)

Declined CSD

Re this. How does that work, exactly? It is an obvious G4. The creator disagrees with the unanimous CfD, creates it anyway and now the clearcut consensus in the CfD is no longer in effect? Nymf (talk) 15:53, 7 April 2015 (UTC)

There was objection to the speedy on the talk page, the objection is not without merit. It not the purpose of speedies to rule on deletions where there is some doubt, that better handled to other forums. --Salix alba (talk): 16:38, 7 April 2015 (UTC)
The previous argument would have to be made again at CfD. That is just tedious, especially as it was unanimous, and neither the guidelines nor the rest of the category tree has changed at all since the initial deletion.
Would this not be handled better as a speedy and then at WP:DELREV if the creator disagrees? Nymf (talk) 17:04, 7 April 2015 (UTC)

Hello Salix alba,

I don't know how closely you've followed the research project about VisualEditor, but since they will be moving into the data analysis phase before long, I wanted to personally ask a few "regulars" at WP:VEF to let me know if they’d seen anything unusual during the last week or two. (You're in the top 10 all-time editors at WP:VEF.) Anyway, if you've seen anything or have any thoughts on it, then please let me know. There's a thread open at Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Feedback#Test feedback if you want, or you can always leave a note at my talk page or send me e-mail.

Also, have you looked at the Special Character tool since it was re-designed a couple of months ago? If the math characters still need work, then please let me know. Thanks, Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 06:21, 7 June 2015 (UTC)

Invitation to subscribe to the edit filter mailing list

Hi, as a user in the edit filter manager user group we wanted to let you know about the new wikipedia-en-editfilters mailing list. As part of our recent efforts to improve the use of edit filters on the English Wikipedia it has been established as a venue for internal discussion by edit filter managers regarding private filters (those only viewable by administrators and edit filter managers) and also as a means by which non-admins can ask questions about hidden filters that wouldn't be appropriate to discuss on-wiki. As an edit filter manager we encourage you to subscribe; the more users we have in the mailing list the more useful it will be to the community. If you subscribe we will send a short email to you through Wikipedia to confirm your subscription, but let us know if you'd prefer another method of verification. I'd also like to take the opportunity to invite you to contribute to the proposed guideline for edit filter use at WP:Edit filter/Draft and the associated talk page. Thank you! GCI2015

I pinged you in phab:T117499, but then I thought that I should probably explain a bit: The Google Code-in is a two-month-long event to have teenagers work on open-source technical projects. It needs sponsoring organizations (the WMF is expected to join again, but we won't officially know until next week) and mentors for each task, and it also needs unofficial help in the background (the role I have been taking). I wonder whether you would like to be either an official mentor or an unofficial help for this task (or anything else; there's still time to nominate new tasks, if you've got a project in mind). Please let me know. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 15:39, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

Thank you very much for your work re: Wikipedia:TemplateData/List, it's highly appreciated. Can you confirm (and this is just something I'm curious about!) how doable it is to get the same information for any other wikis? Best, --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 11:09, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

You should be able to copy the script to the appropriate wiki, and add the line

importScript('User:Salix alba/TDList.js');

to your vector.js file on that wiki. (It seems to work OK just using User:Salix alba rather than the language equivalent Utilisateur:Salix alba/TDList.js.

When you have done that. You will find an item TD List at the bottom of the sidebar. Click the link, wait a few seconds and a popup box should appear. This will have wikicode which you can copy and paste into the page you want the list to appear. The TD List menu item only appears in the User and Wikipedia namespaces.

I've tested this on the french wiki. The corresponding pages are fr:Utilisateur:Salix alba/TDList.js, fr:Utilisateur:Salix alba/vector.js. If you are going to set it up for a different wiki, copy the french version rather than the English one. I've made a couple of customisation in the English version which you don't want on other wikis. --Salix alba (talk): 17:21, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

Hello again. Made this at es.wiki. I'm proud of myself and patting my back :) In case you're interested in feedback re: the script itself, I got a few warnings when trying to save it: Warning: Use '===' to compare with 'null', Info: ['en'] is better written in dot notation. Also, it may be quite useful to have an extra column with numbers, and/or a total at the end to be able to understand at a glance how many templates we're talking about. TY! --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 15:40, 11 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. They're going to try to get it up on a test wiki sometime soon. I'll let you know as soon as I have a link. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 18:14, 24 November 2015 (UTC)
Ready! Try http://en.wikipedia.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/Equation?veaction=edit and open the math editor to see how it's changed. It's a test wiki, so if you haven't used it before, create a new account with a unique password. This is the Beta Cluster, aka where the devs upload their new patches first, which means there's a very small but real chance that something involving basic security could break at any second. Thus it's important that you not re-use a password. There's no connection between your account there and anywhere else; it's not in the SUL system.
mw:User talk:TChan (WMF) is the (brand-new) dev working on math. Please leave feedback on her talk page there. I think that will be the most efficient way to reach her. (Or ping me anywhere/any time.) Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 18:20, 25 November 2015 (UTC)

Graphs updated to vega2

Hi, I recently upgraded our <graph> to Vega 2.0, so now we can have interactive graphs too. I saw you made a great graph for Government spending in the United Kingdom - I updated it to Vega 2.0 syntax, but it would be great if we start using templates for this, otherwise there will be lots of copy/pasting. Template:GraphChart tries to do that, but I'm sure some of the features you used could benefit it. Thanks! --Yurik (talk) 04:24, 14 December 2015 (UTC)

Statistical shape curve and mim.cis

Hi - about my reversion on this article. I work on conflict of interest issues here in Wikipedia, along with my regular editing. I had noticed that pretty much all that mim.cis has been doing is adding content citing his own work. This happens sometimes with academic scientists, where they come to Wikipedia to promote their own work and doing that is really not OK - see WP:SELFCITE. (Of course it is OK to cite your own work some, if your own ref is really the killer one) His edits also made no effort to be comprehensible to a general reader, which is also not good. He had agreed to stop, and now is back to doing that. You can deal with that now. Jytdog (talk) 16:39, 5 April 2016 (UTC)

What was this about? Even if you disagree with the (IMO) plainly obvious rationale behind the edit you undid, you're not supposed to use tools to summarily revert edits (especially without a proper summary) except in cases of clear bad faith. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 21:47, 31 March 2016 (UTC)

I think I had intended to leave a summary and though the tool would have given me the option. I probably got confused with the undo feature. I guess I should have done a subsequent null edit with a proper edit summary pointing out the the article had considerable content with references entomology and examples and was far more that a simple dictdef.--Salix alba (talk): 23:13, 31 March 2016 (UTC)
Not every bit of jargon requires explanation beyond an English translation of what it refers to. The less said about the "references" in this one the better. I suspect this will be heading for deletion whether I'm responsible or not. Nevertheless, please do be careful to leave a summary in future in a subsequent null edit if undoing obviously good-faith edits; otherwise, there is literally no way to know whether you meant to make an edit or whether your finger slipped on the mouse. Thanks. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 18:19, 5 April 2016 (UTC)

Perhaps we met together with Kanti when I visited years ago

I dont think I am back to doing it and am happy to have you edit my edits. I added all of the software for diffeomorphic mapping of the entire community with the major software that does it. perhaps that gives more balance but I am finished on that. I accept your edits whatever you thin is appropriate. Thank-you. Mim.cis (talk) 01:24, 6 April 2016 (UTC)

Citoid script improvements

Heya, I really like your script, however I noticed a few minor annoyances that were easily fixable. Warning: I don't know javascript (or any other programming language for that matter) at all.

1) The citationParams PMID ('pmid': 'PMID',) and PMCID ('pmc': 'PMCID',) for Cite journal definitely are a must-have (currently missing), random example study output enhances from "doi=10.1186/s13011-016-0072-3" to "pmid=27528233|pmc=4986270|doi=10.1186/s13011-016-0072-3" - two less values to enter manually!

2) Another small thing is the res var, not sure if it's intentional and I'm missing something here, but < ref > tags around the brackets sound like a good idea to me.

3) If PMCID is provided, Template:Cite journal creates the clickable URL automatically, so we don't need to duplicate it. Ugly hack: "if (citation.PMCID) {citation.url = null;}".

Also accessdate and via are generally not used in journal citations (debatable I guess, disabled it in my copy at least). Thanks! Aethyta (talk) 11:16, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

OK I'll try and fix it in the main version. I'm having problems editing at the moment, so it might take some time. --Salix alba (talk): 16:29, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
@Aethyta: I've now looked at your changes which seem good and I've incorporated them in my version. One point for your local version I would consider creating User:Aethyta/Citoid.js and linking it using {{importScript('User:Aethyta/Citoid.js');}} in your vector.js page.--Salix alba (talk): 07:22, 24 August 2016 (UTC)
Done. However, in my previous version I killed accessdate alltogether, I readded it in User:Aethyta/Citoid.js now but nulled the field for cite journal and cite book. Made some other small improvements as well, such as hiding volume and series if they're 0 (happens a lot for online previews of journals). Seems to work just fine but I didn't test it with hundreds of links or anything like that. Aethyta (talk) 19:52, 24 August 2016 (UTC)

Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Salix alba. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:49, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Extended-confirmed protection on Template:Hillary Clinton

It looks like you have added extended-confirmed protection to Template:Hillary Clinton, though that page has not been vandalized recently. Note that the announcement above from September 23rd states that "Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort." Additionally, Hillary Clinton itself is semi-protected, so preemptively protecting this component with a higher level of protection is odd.

I assume this was a mistake, perhaps a misclick. Would you mind changing the protection level of Template:Hillary Clinton to semiprotected? Mamyles (talk) 22:11, 13 October 2016 (UTC)

It is relating to an incident when Template:NYT topic was vandalized with quite nasty material and in such a way that when the template was transcluded in Hillary Clinton the material appeared at the top of the page. A similar attack could be used in any other transcluded template, hence the protection. I've dropped the protection back to semi. --Salix alba (talk): 22:38, 13 October 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Salix alba.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

I've looked at the deleted article and the current references are well below the level require. You need much more than a reference which simply list his name and the pieces he has worked on. You need propper reviews of his work which discuss what he has done at length - at least one paragraph about him alone. Read Wikipedia:Notability (people) and make sure you have sources to pass that guideline. Until there are good sources no admin will restore the page. --Salix alba (talk): 20:35, 19 January 2017 (UTC)

Reference 1 and 2 look like the same reference and it looks like it passes the grade. 3, 4, 5 are all substantial references, I'm not quite sure on quite how reliable the sources are, but probably together are enough. If you could find another newspaper ref that would be great. On Quora, you mentioned a Pressreader one, unfortunately as it was by producer of the film it does not count as independant, so can't be used to establish notability. --Salix alba (talk): 19:44, 20 January 2017 (UTC)

Citoid script modification

Hi! I recently found your Citoid script, and it is immensely helpful! However, I'm having a small issue concerning the date readout in the |accessdate parameter: I'd like to reformat it as follows: /date with leading zero if required/(period)(space)/monthname - already specified in var: "monthnames"/(space)/year/(period) . For example: 05. veljače 2017. instead of 2017-02-05. I'd be immeasurably grateful if you could assist me! The script is located here. Thanks in advance! --Ivi104 (talk) 20:58, 5 February 2017 (UTC)

It should hopefully be relatively easy. The bit you want to modify is the function formatCS1Date(isodate) just at the start of the file. In particular the code
        if(style == "MDY")
    		return ""+messages[lang].monthnames[month]+" "+day+", "+year;
    	else if(style == "YMD")
    		return ""+year+"-"+monthnum+"-"+daynum;
    	else
    		return ""+day+" "+messages[lang].monthnames[month]+" "+year;

is used to format the output. To get a two digit day you can use the daynum variable. So for your format you want something like

    return ""+daynum+". "+messages[lang].monthnames[month]+" "+year;

If you always want the same format there is no need for the if-else conditions. --Salix alba (talk): 19:45, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Please advise on Chee Soo article

Hello Salix, please can you advise me on the Chee Soo article you commented on last week? Another editor has posted a disputed tag and he wants to add material to the article from The Wu Kung Federation website from a page which no longer exists. You may remember he has found a Word document on an uploads section of the T.A.O. website, he seems to think it is my website for some reason which it is not. I do not consider I have a conflict of interest, everything there is totally neutral, third party and properly referenced as far as I can see, but it would be helpful to have another editor take a look at it. You can view the ongoing debate at Talk:Chee_Soo. I have tracked down the original article from Combat magazine July 1993 and I have a pdf of it but I'm not sure how to upload it or if it's permissible to put it in the public domain due to copyright infringement. Also the other editor is cherry picking the (website) article and making personal attacks and clearly not coming from a neutral point of view, but if you read the original it clearly supports Chee Soo's own biographical history. He wants to somehow imply that Chee Soo fabricated the Lee style from Japanese arts which he seems to have heard on a forum somewhere, but I do not consider this information worthy of inclusion in the article as it is not a published reliable source and contradicts WP:NPOV and WP:RS. I would like to remove the disputed tag because all of the current information in the article appears to be properly sourced but this new information is not. Can you offer some third party viewpoint or advice on the matter or if not can you let me know the best way to proceed? Chuangzu (talk) 15:13, 24 February 2017 (UTC)

Having found a published source for the article now means it can be used as a reference. According to WP:SOURCEACCESS its not necessary that the source be easy to access. I agree that copyright means that we can't upload it anywhere. Does the original differ from the version in the upload area?
I would say all sources should be treated with some scepticism, both Chee Soo and his daughter are unreliable narrators. Still these are the only sources we have and there is no third party sources. We probably need to take a balance of sources.
I would take the main narrative from Chee Soo's writing but add a paragraph discussing his daughters claim. We don't know the truth but we do know what the daughter has claimed.--Salix alba (talk): 07:57, 25 February 2017 (UTC)

An update from the Sustainability Initiative

Thank you for supporting the Sustainability Initiative!

Hi, Salix alba! Thank you again for supporting the Sustainability Initiative, which aims at reducing the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement. Over the past two years, more than 200 Wikipedians from all over the world have come together to push the Wikimedia movement towards greater sustainability.

What's new?

We are writing you this message because there is great news: The Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation has finally passed a resolution stating that the Foundation is committed to seeking ways to reduce the impact of its activities on the environment. Also, we have created a cool logo and found a nice name for the project which you can see on the right :-)

What's next?

Currently, we are working with Wikimedia Foundation staff to make sustainability a key priority for the selection of a new location for Wikimedia servers in Singapore. Also, we have presented the Wikimedia Foundation with a green energy roadmap to have all Wikimedia servers run on renewable energy by 2019.

Please help!

Let's keep this project moving forward – and there are several ways in which you can help:

  • Ask other Wikipedians to sign the project page as well – this way we can show the Wikimedia Foundation that this is an issue that the community really cares about.
  • Talk to Wikimedians you know about the importance of reducing the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement.
  • Improve and translate the project page on Meta.

If you have any questions, you can contact us on on Meta. Again, thank you very much for your support! --Aubrey und Gnom, 2 April 2017 —Preceding undated comment added 20:32, 2 April 2017 (UTC)

What level are you?

I found your name at Category:User js (probably because you posted the corresponding userbox on your user page), in the level-unspecified list of JavaScript programmers.

I was wondering how experienced you are at JavaScript, and whether you might be interested in getting involved with developing user scripts, hobnobbing with other JavaScript programmers, and organizing and improving JavaScript articles and support pages.

We do all of that and more at the JavaScript WikiProject.

Scripts undergoing development, and the state of JavaScript on Wikipedia, are discussed on the talk page.

For an overview of JavaScript coverage on Wikipedia, see Draft:Outline of JavaScript and Index of JavaScript-related articles. For everything on user scripts, see User:The Transhumanist/Outline of scripts.

The WikiProject also organizes every resource it can find about JavaScript out there, such as articles, books, tutorials, etc. See our growing Reference library. If you know of any good ones, please add them.

If you would like to join the JavaScript WikiProject, feel free to add your name to the participants list.

Hope to see you there! The Transhumanist 16:54, 12 May 2017 (UTC)

Summation Distinguishing Points

Hello Salix,

I hope if you thought if my changes were helpful in any way you would like some more reference. I know everything was undone, but thank you for considering some differences. As recursion develops in the settings of different aspects of summations you can see a lot of indexes of ranges over a unique period of time. It looked like most of a summation has many different signs over a divided integer set of using elements over all useful products, and additions or even exponential functions of a sequence. When a sigma grows in a recursive uniquely driven mode you can find a distance in process over a dichotomy of a product and uniquely find a reading inference in those growing sigma summations. If it takes distance then there is some useful composed elements behind a formal representation and using a likely grown equation or inequality. When the formula is developed then you can find many different intricate sigma equations or summands that remind all of that have a processed armlike effect like using one underestimated in using one for effect. This equation or finding a unified example of a degenerate result. If the recursion develops real numbers then it is reminded, having more interpreted elements can make sense like using an inequality in indifference or using a projected notion of sigma graphs to represent a closer reference. Having uniquely driven modes can mark the same aspects that I love about mathematical inquiry. Tell me what you think!72.241.202.72 (talk) 01:08, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

The article ARIB STD B24 has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable character set

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. -KAP03(Talk • Contributions • Email) 18:09, 26 June 2017 (UTC)

Kosmos Energy

Hi there! Back in 2013 you created the entry for Kosmos Energy and I was wondering if you'd be interested to review an edit request to expand the page? I'm working on behalf of the company, via PR group Ogilvy, as part of my work at Beutler Ink, and have been drafting new material for editors to review and add to the page if it looks appropriate. Although there has been much coverage of the company since 2013, there's still quite little on the page about what it does. My current request is suggesting a section that provides information about the company's operations, to help build out much more detail for readers. Would you be willing to take a look? As I do have a financial COI I won't be making any edits to the article myself, so I'm keen to get feedback and help taking material live if it looks ok. Citoid userscript: accessdate missing

Hi there. Thanks for creating the Citoid user script. I noticed though that refs created by this tool - unlike the one in the VE - don't include the accessdate= parameter. Could you add this (at least as an option)? Regards SoWhy 10:27, 30 January 2018 (UTC)

It depends of the type of reference. For books, newspapers, journals the accessdata is switched off. As these don't change it should not matter when they were accessed. For website its switched on. Newspapers seem to be a bit of a subtle case and I've now switched it on for newspapers.
If you could suply a URL where you think it should be different I will have a look at wat it should be. --Salix alba (talk): 12:41, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
I noticed it with news websites, which are oftentimes parsed with {{cite news}}, like this one and not {{cite web}}, even though they have never been published and thus are suspensible to link rot. So thanks for turning it on for {{cite news}}. Regards SoWhy 13:18, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
This is due to the citoid server. It returns an itemType describing its best guess as to what type source it is. Here it returns newspaperArticle

@Ritarko2015: The big problem is that there a two many unreliable sources which may obscure the reliable ones. Say take reference 18 Cite error: The <ref> tag name cannot be a simple integer (see the help page). this looks like a blog, ref 19Cite error: The <ref> tag name cannot be a simple integer (see the help page). is in Bengali, no editor on the English wikipedia is going to be able to judge that reference. So cut down the reference to three reliable ones, published by well known sources. It might be better to wait until after it has had its premier on May 12 and their are some proper reviews. Even the TOI reference is not that great as it looks they just took a press release and gave the info from that.
I've trimmed the questionable sources. Wait until after May 12, in the meantime read Wikipedia:Verifiability and Wikipedia:Identifying reliable sources to know what counts. --Salix alba (talk): 06:34, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
@Salix alba: Thanks for your answer Sir, OK I will wait please take care about it, i am going to attached another reliable source shortly, Thanks a lot

There are several ways this could have been handled. One was to convert it into a wrapper template (which I did) so that its functionality would still be available for those who're used to using it (with the possibility of it being added to the group of templates that get automatically substed by bots: this would have neatly achieved the stated rationale of the TfD discussion: keeping this off the face of articles so that there are overall fewer hatnote template to reckon with). A second option would be to "deprecate it", so that upon use it would come up with an error message telling editors to use another template instead. A third option is deletion: the one initially performed; that was annoying for those attempting to use the template, but after clicking through to the deletion log and then the TfD discussion, they would eventually find out what other template they need to do. The fourth, and worst, option is redirecting to the other template: the two are used differently, so any editor attempting to transclude {{distinguish2}} will not see any red flags unless they pay close attention to the result, and then, once they've noticed the mangled output, will have no easy way form the target template's documentation to figure out what the bloody hell went wrong.

And also, adding template-editor protection to an dysfunctional template redirect with zero transclusions looks like really odd thing to do. – Uanfala (talk) 00:31, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

Well @Primefac: deleted the template after removing references, the resolution there matches the one for Template:Redirect3 and Template:About2 at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2018 February 18. The nom was explicit about deleting once uses had been migrated. Its also mention in the discussion that the purpose is to simplify the interface, so there are fewer templates around to work with. This implies quite strongly that the delete was the option to take. It looks like the rest of the editor community was happy with this apart from you, as there have been no other transclusions.
I take your point that redirecting is not ideal so its now got the {{Deprecated template}}.
The protection is according to Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Administrator instructions which says the
If any page becomes a redirect, ensure page protection for the redirect matches that of the template which the page now redirects to, and that page protection for the target template is appropriate for the number of transclusions which may have increased after the merger. --Salix alba (talk): 04:34, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
OK, thanks. That's not a redirect anymore, so technically there's no need for its protection to match that of the former target, is there? – Uanfala (talk) 09:47, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
Well, Primefac appears to have missed this discussions and to have instead opted for taking the matter into his own hands and deleting the template straight away – which is the second worst option of the ones I've listed. – Uanfala (talk) 13:34, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
Sorry, I tend to check my pings after I've checked/cleared out my watchlist backlog. You shouldn't just be recreating templates that were deleted because you disagree with the rationale, and putting a {{deprecated template}} tag on a page that already was deprecated (and deleted) is improper as well. Primefac (talk) 13:42, 30 June 2018 (UTC) (please ping on reply)
I don't disagree with the rationale, I'm happy with the outcome of the discussion, which was "merge". I simply don't know how the template eventually got deleted: deletion is one of several alternatives after a merge and as explained above, one of the least optimal in this case. – Uanfala (talk) 13:48, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
I think we are done here. If you want to challenge Primefac's interpretation of the TFD then take it to Wikipedia:Deletion review, or Wikipedia talk:Templates for discussion. I'd advise against that action as its getting close to WP:POINT.--Salix alba (talk): 13:58, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

Please attribute or claim media you uploaded or restored: File:Extinction events.png

You uploaded or restored , File:Extinction events.png, but for various reasons did not add an {{information}} block, or indicate your (user) name on the file description page. Media uploaded to Wikipedia needs information on the SPECIFIC authorship and source of files, to ensure that it complies with copyright laws in various jurisdictions.

If it's entirely your own work, please include {{own}} in the relevant source field, amend the {{information}} added by a third party, ensuring that your user name (or name you want used for attribution) is clear in the author field, and change the license to an appropriate "self" variant (if such a license is not already used). You should also add an |author= parameter to the license tag, to assist reviews and image patrollers. You can also add |claimed=yes and an |author=to the {{media by uploader}} or {{presumed_self}} tag if it is present to indicate that you've acknowledged the image, and license shown (and updated the {{information}} where appropriate).

If it's not entirely your own work, then please update the source and authorship fields, so that they accurately reflect the source and authors of the original work(s), as well as the derivative you created. You should also not use a "self" license unless the work is entirely you own. Media that is incorrectly claimed as self or {{own}}, will eventually be listed at Files for Discussion or deleted, unless it's full status is entirely clear to other contributors, reviewers and image patrollers.

Whilst this notification, relates to a single media upload, it would also be appreciated if you could ensure that appropriate attribution exists for other media you uploaded, You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log.
