Mark of the Year

Hi Ruhrfisch, I was wondering if you could re-check the article along with the peer review. Thanks for all the help --Flewis(talk) 00:59, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

You add some comments some days ago; I've been away and I've just addressed them. Feel free to take a second look. Maxim(talk) 01:20, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Hey, Ruhrfisch.

All that feedback I pooled last time helped get the article to GA, and I thank you for all of your aid. I, on this topic, will need it one more time so Lincolnshire can pass through FAC without too much trouble. If you have the time, can you take a look over the article?

Please get back to me as soon as you can.

Thanks, --Starstriker7(Dime algoor see my works) 04:07, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

RE: Wikipedia's Expert Peer Review process (or lack of such) for Science related articles

User: Shotwell suggested (on my talk page) "I would endorse a WP:EXPERTADVICE page that outlined the wikipedia policies and goals for researchers in a way that enticed them to edit here in an appropriate fashion. Perhaps a well-maintained list of expert editors with institutional affiliation would facilitate this sort of highly informal review process. I don't think anyone would object to a well-maintained list of highly-qualified researchers with institutional affiliation (but then again, everyone seems to object to something)."

We could start with that if you would agree ... - could you help to push his idea through Wikipedia bureaucracy ? In my view people nominated as "expert reviewers" should be willing not to hide under the veil of anonymity. They should be able to demonstrate some level of the verifiable accomplishment / recognition in the domain of professional science (everything mentioned above relates to amateur Wikipedia activity ... ).

BTW, I do not see any reason why the anonymity of editors on Wikipedia is considered to be a "good thing". Above is my general opinion, so please don't take my statement personally. There is obviously a choice given for everyone in Wikipedia either to act "in open" or to hide behind meaningless assumed pseudonym and I accept this situation. Also I do understand current Wikipedia concept that in order to produce good Wikipedia science article, one does not need to be a professional scientist ... - that is fine with me ... But I propose to have (at least optionally) ability to review/qualify such article by the professional scientist. Cheers, Apovolot (talk) 13:31, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Virginia peer review

Just wanted to say thanks for reviewing Virginia for us, I was worried it would go with out a human review for the third time. I'll try to get around to those suggestions in the coming week, and to review a backlogged article too! Thanks again!--Patrick «» 19:39, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Myra, Wisconsin map insert

Thanks for placing the map. Can you send me instructions on how to do this in the future. You can send them to wolfj@slinger.k12.wi.us. Now the pictures are scanned from a book (see reference on Myra page). The book was printed in 1976 but I believe the Washington County Historical society has the rights to them. What process should I use to gain permission. Please keep the pictures on until I can seek permission. Thanks! Tidying convert template parameters

Hi Ruhrfisch,

I noticed that you are making a series of edits with an edit summary similar to "simplify convert templates (use default units, sig figs)" to articles mainly about State Parks. I would like to thank you for making these edits for several reasons. Firstly they do simplify the template call in articles making reading, understanding and editing articles easier. Secondly, simplifying the calls by removing redundant parameters makes the convert template look easier to use and hopefully promotes its use by editors. Thirdly (and dearest to my heart), using the default conversion output units for acres (which is hectares) restores hectares to many articles where I believe they are frequently the appropriate metric unit for land area conversions. This being particularly relevant considering that the single-handed campaign to remove hectares from wikipedia has restarted.

Note that the convert template does some obscure things when it tries to determine the number of significant digits in the input value. Some of the articles that you have edited recently to simplify the convert template calls have led to inconsistencies between converted values in the article text and the same value in an infobox, because of the guess that the convert template makes. An example lies in the Delaware Canal State Park article. I had started to edit these articles where such inconsistencies have crept in. I am making the assumption the area of the parks have been surveyed to an accuracy of at least to the nearest acre, such that in the article above there are 3 significant digits in 830 acres, not 2 as the convert template is guessing. However, I have come across another article (Erie Bluffs State Park) where this occurs and I thought before I find and edit too many more articles that you have contributed to significantly, I should seek your input. Is the nearest acre a reasonable assumption for the accuracy of the land area measurements given in these articles?

Bleakcomb (talk) 03:53, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

My pleasure Ruhrfisch. They are a fantastic set of articles. I like to see metric conversions provided that are easy to read and understand while having appropriate precision (not too much - not too little). I have started on the rest of the articles - I have R. B. Winter on my screen right now! I would be happy to continue, though I can't promise any deadlines for completion. If you would like to do it, just say so. I probably won't get much more done today. BTW, I put a surprise in Pymatuning State Park article that you will probably object to. I was waiting to see how long before someone found it! It should be m3, I know.

Peer review limits

Ruhrfisch, thank you for informing me of the peer review limitations. I was not aware, and I thank you for cutting me some slack. I will keep your comments in mind for future reference. Best wishes! Whataworld06 (talk) 14:24, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

  • Ruhrfisch, if I could take a moment to ask you a question. I am confused as to how the peer review and featured article process works. I listed two articles that I feel are of quality, but I am not sure how long they need to remain listed for peer review. So far, no one has made any suggestions or comments. I plan on making any corrections needed, but I am not sure what to do afterwards. I apologize for the inconvenience, but this is my first time going through this process, and I was wondering if you could provide any advice or direct me to a link that would assist me. Thanks so much! Whataworld06 (talk) 17:05, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
    • Thanks again for your assistance! You are too kind. I was not aware of the differences between FAC and FLC, since I simply saw another musician Awards list that was a featured article and thought the list I nominated was similar. If the list does not obtain FAC status, or the peer review cannot be changed to apply to FLC status, I will be sure to resubmit the list I nominated for FLC at a later date. Thanks again! Whataworld06 (talk) 22:19, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

Follow up question

Hey Ruhrfisch, per the peer review, I have been updating the first table on the List of Pi Kappa Phi chapters article here. I am adding the cities and closing dates for each chapter. I am also implementing a color-code for the chapter status (instead of using asterisks). I got the color idea from the List of Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom page. If you have the time, would you mind taking a look at the new table? Thanks. — ŁittleÄlien¹8² (talk\contribs) 20:45, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

Re Mozart map (Mozart family Grand Tour)

Well, I tried my stuff on Online Map Creation. I can get an outline map all right, but when I tried to add cities, following what seemed to be the required process - nothing happened, so the procedure stalled. The map I need has exactly the dimensions of Awadewit's map on her History of a Six Weeks' Tour article. Her map also shows many of the towns I need. I would have thought her map could be easily adapted for my purposes, if I knew how. Can you help? I can specify my requirements in any way you wish. Meanwhile I'll keep trying on OMC and, who knows, I may be lucky. Brianboulton (talk) 21:25, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

I am totally grateful. If it can be done, I'd like the map to be as per Awadewit's dimensions but with the following specific characteristics:-
  • Remove all the rivers
  • Replace these with country borders, if possible
  • Insert the following towns, representing the outward journey to London, connected by a black line (with a couple of direction arrows) representing the outward journey to London: Salzburg; Munich; Mannheim; Mainz; Frankfürt; Cologne; Liège; Brussels; Paris; Calais; Dover; London
  • Insert the following towns, (connected by a red line with arrows) to denote the return journey: (London); (Dover); (Calais); Lille; Ghent; Antwerp; The Hague; Amsterdam; Haarlem; Utrecht; (Brussels); (Paris); Dijon; Lyon; Geneva; Zurich; (Munich); (Salzburg).

That's 23 towns in all - somewhat less than Awadewit's. Can this be done? If necessary I can supply geographical coordinates for all the towns - or any other information needed. It seems an awfully big undertaking - please don't let it be a problem, with all your other commitments. Brianboulton (talk) 23:21, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

Modern borders not a problem, the old ones were generally quite similar, and anyway these are not the focus of the map. Please take your time, the peer review is yet young! Brianboulton (talk) 00:36, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
The map is marvellous, no further tweaks needed. I have loaded into the article page. The only possible problem is that it looks a bit small, and will not load if I try to force it to, say, 250px. Could you look at it in situ, & tell me if you think readers will find it OK? Thanks, again, for your help. Brianboulton (talk) 17:53, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
I've just seen it, in its enlarged form, in the article. Couldn't be better. Brianboulton (talk) 21:14, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

"I will never have an FP"

Lol. I'm wondering, would you mind if I searched around a bit and possibly promoted an image within one of your articles, but not one of your pictures? Ceran →(singsee →scribe) 21:33, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

Image:Black_Moshannon_State_Park_Cabin_4.JPG seems like it might have a chance at FPC. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 21:58, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, I don't noramlly reply here, but as for Julian's suggestion is a bit tilted (fixable) and the gravel sidewalk is close to being blow (I think). I could always nominate it though - it keeps me humble. I tend to get attached to certain photos for sentimental reasons, but unlike articles they can't be improved, and I am not in the position to buy a better camera. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 22:37, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
Err, I couldn't tell if it was tilted, or if it was on a hill. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 22:40, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
Actually it is on a slight hill / slope. I will nominate it at the peer review for FPs in the next few hours. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 23:57, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
I'll comb through my various sources tomorrow for any good pictures from your type of articles just in case this image is not well regarded. Ceran →(singsee →scribe) 01:08, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

Backup pics

In case that image is not well regarded, I have found the following images across various places:

That's what I have so far. I have to study for a quiz now, so I won't be on for the rest of the night. Cheers and good luck with FPC! Ceran →(singsee →scribe) 01:17, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

I may be missing something, but it seems to me that all four of those images are not under a free license. I love the first three, but am a bit puzzled by the fourth as a potential FP (looks more like part of someone's vacation slideshow - here we are at Leonard Harrison!). I did not get to the PPR as planned but should do so today. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 12:50, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, they're all non-free. I agree that the fourth one looks a tad like something you would put in a scrapbook rather than Wikipedia. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 14:06, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
Good to know, thanks! I'll put that on my watchlist. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 19:21, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
Heh, those kinds of comments seem to be the theme lately. I've nominated several FPCs fruitlessly, as well. I guess I just don't have the eye for the kinds of issues they look for. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 19:30, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
Whenever you have a question, feel free to ask me, and with my humble photo skills, if I am unable you can always take it to PPR. Ceran →(singsee →scribe) 20:57, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, feel free to comment on the PPR of the log cabin photo, here if so inclined. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:33, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
I have now nominated the Black Mo log cabin picture at WP:FPC, here, thanks again to all, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 05:29, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

The DYK was actually for Mark Rubin and was by Xanderer. It's the first article I nominated that I didn't write myself. I've been very busy. I now own one of these and we'll be getting one of these on Saturday. Dincher (talk) 20:58, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

Boonies

There are a couple of issues with same places in the boonies of Pennsylvania. Kane get vandalized fairly often and I seem to be the only one watching it. Also, the maps of Potter County are all now out of whack. With the East Fork and Wharton deal. I will fix them, in time, but when I don't know. If you have time, could you do it? All the maps of the townships and the county maps will need fixing. Thanks for the congrats, don't know when I'll be back on the wiki, probably not until Tues. Comments

Hey, Ruhrfisch.

Just wanted to give you the heads up, that I left a few comments in response to yours at the Lincolnshire peer review page. Once again, I appreciate your aid.

Thanks, --Starstriker7(Dime algoor see my works) 04:12, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for peer reviewing the Stella Power Station article. I've gone through and completed you recommendtions for improvement, but there are probably a few statements left tht need referencing. I was wondering if you could go through and point out which specific statements I should find a reference for, along with any other mistakes/improvements which need sorting out. Thanks again for reviewing. Fintan264 (talk) 22:41, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

Right, I've gotten some of the references you've asked for and tried to expand or merge the short paragraphs. However I still haven't got references for the statements in the social and culture section. This is because there are no online resources stating whats in the article; its been taken from seeing the films and seeing the stations in them. I provided a screenshot of the stations in the payroll film, is this not a suitable reference? Similarly, there is nothing online which states you could see the stations between the places mentioned in the article, but there are photos from the two places and the stations are clearly visible in both photos. If these were suitable references I wouldn't be sure as to how to reference them. I'm sorry about all this by the way, I'm still never sure what is acceptable and what isn't hah.
Also, I've probably got the prose as good as I, personally, ever could. To improve it further is there anyone I could ask to go through and do such a thing? Fintan264 (talk) 13:16, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

Armstrong Township

I have some question about Armstrong Township that you might have and idea about. Could you give your two cents. It's on the Armstrong Township talk page and article history. Namely the population in 1890 was well over 7,000 souls according to the U.S. Census, but now the population is more like 700. My thoughts are that the establishment of the water company surely accounted for some decline, but I doubt that over 6,000 people were moved out. Maybe the census included figures from South Williamsport and Duboistown? I don't know just how census figures are counted. Dincher (talk) 01:36, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

If you don't mind. The question has been bugging me for some time. The scanning error sounds most likely. Thanks. How's the bridge coming along? Dincher (talk) 02:32, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
What did you want me to see in the South Williamsport history link? I am busier and busier everyday. My greatest contributions to the wiki may be in the past. Things at home are going great, but we're always busy, busy, busy. Dincher (talk) 02:38, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
No problem. Forgot to add that I have heard about PR burnout before. ;) I guess that's a wink. Dincher (talk) 02:43, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
Well don't get burned too bad. Have a good Sunday. Dincher (talk) 03:08, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
I know Mike Dincher from the family hunting camps near the water company. He's a tresspasser just like me and the rest of us. I always really liked him. He was one of the few guys to pay attention to us kids, when we were kids. I don't imagine that he won, did he? I hadn't noticed the two names coidcidence. That's pretty cool. Have fun with the map. Dincher (talk) 03:27, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
Those results are pretty impressive. I also had fun looking at the Presidential results on a county by county basis. Thanks for the link. Dincher (talk) 03:53, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

Did you see that Amd194 came up with the Armstrong Township answer? He's a pretty smart guy. Dincher (talk) 18:51, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

I saw your note that the original was wrong. I am glad we have it sorted out. Thanks for the congrats and congrats to you too. Dincher (talk) 02:42, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

Glad to help. I hope the bad weather dissipates quickly. Finetooth (talk) 05:16, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
I understood your message perfectly. I was being clever and obscure in my reply. Get well soon, is what I really meant. By the way, thinking again about bridges has led me to start reading The Portland Bridge Book, which I acquired a couple of weeks ago. Fascinating. A bridge that I use frequently and have photographed many times just for fun turns out to be the oldest surviving vertical lift bridge in the U.S. Built in 1910, it originally had a wooden deck but now has an open-grating steel deck that "sings" from high-speed vibrations when vehicles roll over it. I noticed in the paper the other day that 30 percent of the traffic over this bridge this year was by bicycle. Personal research indicates that this amazing statistic could well be true. Finetooth (talk) 17:58, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
I should have thought to ask yesterday. Other than doing reviews, is there anything else I can do at PR or elsewhere until you are feeling better? Finetooth (talk) 15:52, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
I'm glad you are doing better. I'll think about your PR ideas and comment if I think of anything that might be useful. That big bunch of things from the AP class is taking a while to get through. I reviewed Gastritis this morning. The authors are 10th-graders, a studious lot by-and-large, as far as I can tell. Finetooth (talk) 19:04, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
Glad to hear you are taking it to FAC. I certainly think it's ready. I'll weigh in at some point. Finetooth (talk) 00:30, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

HAER photos

I noticed that you start your new bridge article. I noticed in particular the photos from HAER. I believe you could get a higher resolution photo from converting the original TIFF files into JPG's. Also, I was wondering if you were going to crop out the border that was created when the photos were digitized.

Erie Land Light will be expanded soon and will be sporting a new (or rather old depending on how who look at it) photo that I found on HAER after you directed me to the covered bridge photos. --D.B.talkcontribs 19:54, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

A slight rotation wouldn't be bad. I wonder if you could break your curse of not having featured picture with one of the bridge photos. Think, they are high res photos of a historic, encyclopedic bridge that can not be replaced. Or, would that not count? --D.B.talkcontribs 01:40, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
The photo looks good. I put the DYK nomination for Erie Land in already. --D.B.talkcontribs 04:22, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
I've had some success with getting old B&W photos (1, 2) featured, but I've had failures as well. So who knows, I still haven't figured how great of a historical photo it has to be to get promoted. --D.B.talkcontribs 04:56, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

Hey there...

Can you take a look at the sourcing queries on Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Ralph Bakshi and tell me if I'm out of line here? It appears that the editors are using citations to sources they did not actually consult, but that were sources for works they did consult. Updated DYK query On 4 December, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Plunketts Creek Bridge No. 3, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

BorgQueen (talk) 02:31, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

Congrats on the DYK!
Go for it at PR and FAC. Not a problem at all. I likely won't be ready for any major wiki work until after the New Year. Dincher (talk) 01:32, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

Peer review, Igbo people

I picked this up from the WP:PR page, to review. There is nothing on the talkpage to indicate that the review is in progress, perhaps because the nominator omitted a stage? Can you help to get the position regularised? Many thanks, Brianboulton (talk) 01:02, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

Peer Review, York Park

Thanks for fixing my error and moving the peer review. Now hopefully someone will review it. :) Aaroncrick (talk) 08:53, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for starting it! :) Aaroncrick (talk) 04:26, 14 December 2008 (UTC)
Nice Peer Review and thanks again. I've started fixing the minor issues although it's very very hard to find references on the net about the ground as the ground is only a minor one. I'm about to change the article to B-class rating, do you disagree? Cheers Aaroncrick (talk) 06:28, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks

As my sponge-worthy days are behind me, I'll settle for "mop-worthy". Thanks for your careful consideration at my successful RfA. Please let me know on my talk page if you have any suggestions for me. - Dan Dank55 (send/receive) 22:04, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

reconsideration needed re Saint Kilda

Please note the title the editor used originally, Edit warring at St Kilda. It was found to have extensive discussion that appeared appropriate for that editor to learn more about the topic. The issue raised had been hashed out quite thoroughly on that page. That is why the discussion was moved to the page cited by that editor.

When editors with a long history, who are listed on the “safe’ editor lists take the time to point another editor toward some information that should help them become better editors, why are you approaching it as you have?

The misguided objective of the editor even was discussed thoroughly, and explained as inaccurate, in the original article under the heading of origin of names. Why are you supporting an attempt to reverse edits that agree with all of the references cited in the article?

After I had made an extensive and time consuming edit of the entire article, that editor reversed my entire edit because of an already resolved single issue -- over the denial that St. means Saint -- when that name also is used in all hard cover encyclopedias, such as Britannica. The entire portion of the article discusses the accuracy of what I edited, yet my entire edit was reversed because an editor disagrees, without any basis in fact nor any reference to cite.

When someone's earnest efforts to make long and productive edits are tossed aside to support inaccurate and single-minded editors by other editors such as you, I begin to have concern about our administrators. Why is there reactionary concern about policies quoted by inaccurate editors -- without concerned about the issues and the accuracy of the edits being reversed by them? I am the one who should have posted a warning! I have no interest in these wars… I have too many things I want to make better to waste my time in edit wars for dominance of personal opinions that have nothing to do with accuracy.

Why aren’t you examining issues with the objective of promoting the benefit of the encyclopedia? A little more attention to the issue and the discussions involved at the very page to which the response was transferred might have guided you to react differently and to the benefit of Wikipedia. That was the only reason I responded instead of moving on to another topic where I could make a positive contribution, leaving the error to embarrass the publication.

I will place this on your talk page because I will remove it again from my talk page after seeing whether you respond. I hope you reconsider your entry and approach other situations more cautiously in the future -- in my mind the issue was directed back to the editor who raised a false alarm. It is obvious to me now that the editor is not interested in correct entries, the error remains. 83d40m (talk) 00:57, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

Sorry, but I am just about to log off... thanks for the quick reply, I will pick up from here when I come back on-line later in the weekend. 83d40m (talk) 01:39, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

Sorry for the delay. I do not wish to spend a lot of time on this, being more interested in going forward... and, preferring to spend my limited time—editing. Unfortunately, that may have led to the lack of effective communication here.

What I noted on my summary was a response to the editor who wiped out an edit into which I invested hours because of one issue -- has the Dutch notation S. Kilda been interpreted since the 1600s as Saint Kilda, and since it has been, is it correct for that to be noted in the introductory to the article? (Obviously now, that was greatly debated at wp.)

I do find it difficult to understand why an established editor would wipe out an extensive edit for one point (that was all that was noted to me in the counter summary entries).

Please follow the summaries,

This was as I continued to make edits to the article and another as well as respond to the note at my page. I have seen warnings given by inept editors as a power play driven by a desire to have their own person agenda prevail. I was in a hurry and failed to research the editor, choosing to refer the editor back to the page the editor cited since it even had data that supported the St. as saint discussion.

No request to go to discussion was directed toward me.

That would have been my next step with the original editor – but the original editor never continued the dialogue.

I am used to dealing with vandals who usually go away after their reversal is reversed and until I realized that another editor was participating in the reversals, you, and that you had placed your warning at my page -- I really paid little attention, presuming that the editor (I figured was a vandal) had abandoned the quest. I had reverted, built upon the contribution of another editor (having failed to realize that the second editor was responding to the warning if that was the purpose, mostly because an edit had been added with a comment about it). I added more after integrating that edit into the original edit I made... and continued to edit the article. I would not have gone any farther with reversals, not so much because of the rule, but because I simply despise wp edit wars and prefer to work toward consensus or thorough documentation if the issue is important to me. I usually back-off and reassess my entries if there is what seems objective question about them. This did not seem that way, as I noted previously -- it seemed single-minded and inconsiderately focused.

Unraveling such events does not resolve issues, but it I prefer that you understand that my behavior was not intended as it was being interpreted. Better communication on both sides could have kept this from escalating as it did into a donnybrook. I apologize for wasting everyone’s time through my inattention, but still have to admit that I am astonished by the massive reversal of an editor for what was portrayed as a single issue – and am not so sure I would recognize the intent in a similar scenario playing out in the future either. A single request to go to discussion could have sufficed and I expect that an administrator would exercise such a tool instead of repeated reversals when dialogue is continuing. Hope that there is something learned on all sides through this and thanks to you for taking the time to intervene. 83d40m (talk) 00:30, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks again -- I appreciate your intervention, advice, and unnecessary (but quite gracious) apology. ---- 83d40m (talk) 04:22, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

The combination of recent presence on the main page and the typically associated vandalism precipitating a quicker response to revert rings a bell with me. I tend to revert more readily as well, when vandalism is occurring, and I remember thinking that the reverts smacked of it -- especially because of the sarcastic comment associated with the second, rapid-secession, reversal and a single, weird edit of something I had not altered. Skeptically presuming good faith with the second editor, I proceeded to integrate the edit into my own. I thought I might be dealing with vandals having some fun until your edit and obvious exploration of the situation. I had moved the warning for the first editor to see other discussion of the topic, and that editor ceased participation... now it seems that the editor was unaware of the effort I made. I intended just to abandon the article if another reversal occurred.

I continued only because your edit conveyed that you were sincere, "assuming good faith", and resolution was possible. Since you knew one of the reverting editors, you certainly had the advantage of relying upon their previous records -- as I said -- I was in a hurry, approaching being late for an appointment and usually would not have reacted to the second reversal without exploring the editors and establishing some dialogue if they were not vandals. Unfortunately, the time necessary for my response was not available until much later. I never participate in "wars" -- I usually revert what I perceive as vandalism, sometimes I will attempt to reason with editors who seem misled, but after a few tries -- I move on -- if the topic is important to me, there always is plenty of time in the future to correct errors with a fresh perspective after that type of editor is no longer engaged in a personal agenda.

Thanks again, because of your intervention, I have come away from a nasty encounter with a sense of friendship and appreciation. ---- 83d40m (talk) 16:20, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

Re: Peer review limits

Yep, continuing from my last message here, I always look for my own reviewers, so WP:PR doesn't have to worry about them. If I didn't formally open the PR, I would instead have the comments posted on the article's talk page; however, it's easier to manage when they are on separate pages at WP:PR. Re: Awadewit

Thanks for your message. I have been in communication with Awadewit by e-mail and sent her an apology yesterday, which she accepted, but I will also remove the conversation, as per your comments. I'm sure your concern is appreciated. Best, —Politizer talk/contribs 18:16, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

Hey Ruhrfisch, sorry if my remark came off as sounding like I was blaming you for my edit—if it did sound like that, that's not what I intended, I was only trying to explain why I removed the content. Thank you again for your concern and for your help. Best, —Politizer talk/contribs 20:43, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

A grande turnê...

Well, who'd of though it - fame in Portugal! They've gone to town a bit with images, with two of the Salzburg birthplace, and reviving others that I had got shot of. Let's hope they haven't disturbed the sacred text.

On another matter, tomorrow I will be closing the peer review of Shackleton-Rowett Expedition and taking it to FAC. This may seem a bit premature, but I'm taking a break at Christmas and I'd like if possible for it to be dealt with before then. I always value your comments, so please feel free to visit it at FAC. Potter County

I am confused about the updated Potter County maps. There is a rambling question etc. about this on your talk page on the commons side. Dincher (talk) 01:12, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

I tried all the things suggested under Bypass Your Cache for Internet Explorer and things are still off. I too see the correct map when I click on it but the wrong map in the article itself. If I get a chance I will look at home and let you know. Have a good one!--Dincher (talk) 01:49, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
I have the same problem. I tried removing and re-adding the map in question and the same problem is still there. Then I thought it might be a comma vs. no comma issue. It doesn't appear to be. I see two solutions, re-name the maps and replace under the new name or ask an expert. That choice I will leave to you. Dincher (talk) 02:21, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
I noticed your prediciment and believe I solved it. For some strange reason a width of 300 pixels shows the old version but any other width works. No clue why. -D.B.talkcontribs 02:39, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
I saw it! I gave him a barnstar and fixed some of the township maps that were out of whack. Dincher (talk) 02:49, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
Your welcome. Glad to help. --D.B.talkcontribs 03:26, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi, you had peer reviewed this article in august this year. After which, it went a failed FAC. Before i put it back on FAC, i think the article would benefit by your suggestions and observations. Can you please look at the article and comment on the article talk, about any faults in the article? I requested you because 1. you are not related to India or Hinduism, so you can comment on use of jargon, or confusing new Hinduism- related concepts, introduced in the article 2. I have seen your work as a PR reviewer and as an editor of FA articles, so you know what are problems articles have. Thanks. --Redtigerxyz Talk 04:38, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the response. Can you please give a rough estimate, so i can plan a FAC after your review and leave some time for corrections? --Redtigerxyz Talk 15:13, 12 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the reassurance. --Redtigerxyz Talk 04:37, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
Hi. Thanks for the comments. Would like to hear more. I am working on it. --Redtigerxyz Talk 16:24, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
I have amended most of the suggestions and replied to others. Please take a look and Thanks for the in-depth review. If I ask you this, if there was a FAC of Vithoba right now, what would have been your vote: oppose, support or neutral. What more needs to done before FAC? --Redtigerxyz Talk 07:04, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the review. Can you please leave a formal note on the talk that issues have been addressed on the article talk, so i can then start a FAC?--Redtigerxyz Talk 14:16, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick response. --Redtigerxyz Talk 14:29, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Can you help, perhaps?

Sorry to trouble you, but I wonder if you can help me fix a problem? I am experimenting with using a gallery in connection with a list presently at WP:FLC. The main list is on Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. The experimental gallery is on User:Brianboulton/Sandbox4. I want to know if it is possible to align the gallery centrally, rather than left-justified. There seem to be options in gallery presentation arising from WP:GALLERY, but I can't figure out how to use them. If you have any ideas on this, or about how I might otherwise improve the presentation of the gallery, I'd be most grateful. Brianboulton (talk) 14:40, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for your very swift response! I've fiddled a bit with the presentation, and you can see the finished product in the sandbox. I will shortly transfer this to the main list page, where you will see it in context. I think it looks good, but whether it will convince the folks at FLC is another matter. I've also adopted your dagger idea, for which more thanks. Brianboulton (talk) 17:12, 12 December 2008 (UTC)
Later: I've just uncovered a new source which will give me PD photos of some of the missing faces, so I'm holding off on the gallery for the moment. Brianboulton (talk) 18:17, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

Take a break, review a murder case!

Hey Ruhrfisch, how about taking a break from those musty wooden bridges? Take a look at this sensational murder case! The Toa Payoh Ritual Murders took place in Singapore, 1981, and shocked the prudish nation then. Two children had been killed, and the paganistic and degenerate lifestyles of their murderers were reported in great detail in the press. I am planning to bring this article to be an FA and would like your input on how the article can be improved. Please comment at Wikipedia:Peer review/Toa Payoh Ritual Murders/archive1. You were . . .

An answer in a crossword I did today. Ruhr, was anyway. :-) Hope all is well this holiday season. --IvoShandor (talk) 01:49, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

Yeah I remember you mentioning the book, what was the title again? Things are well, I haven't talked to Kranar much lately, he's been keeping busy with a cemetery preservation group near his town, I even wrote and sent out a press kit for them. :-) I plan on working on the Black Hawk stuff again, one day I'd like to see them all featured, but that is quite a daunting task when approaching it as a single writer, maybe one day they'll all get done. Regardless, through our work together, I think that series of articles is among Wikipedia's best. I have been fairly obsessed with US biological and chemical weapons of late and was surprised at how little information there was on wiki. Merry Christmas Ruhr! --IvoShandor (talk) 02:46, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
This is the time of year everyone is busy methinks. I will pick up a copy of that book, I am sure I can handle Bad Axe. Maybe we get a couple of the articles promoted to FA and then go for a featured topic, I think the requirements are more stringent and this would make a good one, I think there are only a couple articles in the campaign template that haven't made it to GA and one of those was close and failed. --IvoShandor (talk) 06:13, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
You said the minor engagements were detailed pretty sparsely in that book, I wonder, was there much on Ament's Cabin, or did we have more here, because the last GA reviewer, when it failed, wanted some details that I just don't think exist. --IvoShandor (talk) 06:14, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Wills Mountain State Park

I guess I have decided to start working on the state parks in Maryland. The first one I decided to expand Wills Mountain State Park seems to be a figment of somebody's imagination. Please see my question at the List of Maryland state parks talk page. Hope all is well. I see you've become famous (above note). Dincher (talk) 00:59, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the input on Wills Mountain. I am starting to doubt that I will work with the MD state parks much. The info provided by the state is maddeningly brief with little to no history. Dincher (talk) 01:59, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
I will take a look at the Ohio info tonight. Dincher (talk) 02:30, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
I am off to Ohio. I guess I am getting ready to undertake another major project. Already started List of Ohio state parks. It's very rough for now. Do what you want with it. I am going to expand Van Buren State Park. Here's a preliminary DYK idea. that Ruhrfisch once got poison ivy at Van Buren State Park?
Not sure what to do with "white men". In the history section of Van Buren. Just can't think of it. Guess we'll have to come up with another DYK. More tomorrow. Dincher (talk) 03:26, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Shackleton-Rowett et al

Thanks for your great support re above. Another highlight of today is that Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration made it to FL. This was a tricky nom - I was prepared for it to fail over images, but all proved OK, without recourse to the gallery option. This list is the crucial element that will bind a future FT, but many of the remaining expeditions will be hard to get to GA, let alone FA, because of limited source information. However, that's a long-term project I'm in no hurry to complete. Today I'm basking in the shine of two stars, quite apart from the pleasure I get from this work. Brianboulton (talk) 10:46, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Millennium Park map

Yes all the articles in this WP:GT have the map as one of their external links, if I am correct. Having the map in the articles would be helpful. I guess start with the map that is the first external link at Millennium Park. How close can you come to that?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 04:13, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

In addition to the GT articles, three of the four surrounding streets have articles (the one to the west has two because the street is in a historic district in that neighborhood) and if you look at the template at the bottom there is the Nichols Bridgeway. That should do it for 300 pixels.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 04:34, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
If you label the AIC across the street to the south, then you have to label all the historic buildings in the historic district across the street to the west and the famous skyscrapers across the street to the north. This is a bit much for 300 pixels.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 04:47, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
I know you are doing your best. I am sure it will compliment the map at Millennium Park pretty well when you are done.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 18:00, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

  • The lead has been further shortened. If you don't mind, could you look it through once and see if there's anything that could be further improved. Please feel free to leave any specific feedback on the Peer Review if you'd like. Thank you once again, Mailer Diablo 15:26, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Yet another map help request...

I hope you are going to take a decent holiday break. I shall be off-wiki next week, in the south of France. In the meantime I wonder if you could ask for help with a small mapping problem?

In a move slightly away from the "heroic age" I have written New South Greenland, about an Antarctic land that never was. I need a map to indicate its reported false position in the Weddell Sea. The segment map in the article, showing the Antarctic peninsula, is the best base I can find. If you look at Map p. 52 on a different website you will see the mythical coastline, represented by the close dotted line, running from "N. Cape" to "mountains". This particular map is unavailable, but I need a rough approximation of that dotted line, running from 62°41'S, 47°21'W (N. Cape) to around 69°30'S. 48°W, the position of the "mountains", superimposed on my map.

The only markings on my map apart from the line should be: labelling the land "Antarctic peninsula (Graham Land)": "North Cape position 62°41'S, 47°21'W"; "? mountains, 69°30'S. 48°W". I would also like a separate dot, at 64°S,46°W, marked "Ross's appearance of land, 1843". I realise this is a busy time and I am obviously ready to wait, but I though I'd get my request in anyway. Brianboulton (talk) 16:53, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

The map is fantastic - I can't thank you enough, and so quick, too! One small thing; the coordinates for the mountains mirage don't appear in the sources, I worked them out from the unavailable map. I think they had better be removed, as OR. Otherwise all is great. Alas, my French trip is off due to a family problem, but never mind. Enjoy your holiday. Brianboulton (talk) 09:52, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

Back — sort of

Thanks for your prayers and your concern: I'm now back home, but full recovery will take a few weeks. I don't think I'll be doing much wikiwork for a while, as looking at a computer screen for more than a few minutes strains my eyes a little bit. I hope to be able to resume activity by New Year. Nyttend (talk) 00:41, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the new note. As I have my mind in a slightly-Wikipedia context, this brings something to mind (forgive me if it's not funny): is a hope for "speedy recovery" something like a "speedy-keep" in a deletion discussion? To go to your question: thanks very much for the offer, but I don't know of anything that I'd "need" to be done. Nyttend (talk) 15:50, 20 December 2008 (UTC)
Actually, could you please look at a few of my recent contributions to make sure that I've spelled things rightly? I think I'm doing well, but I'd like someone to check :-) Nyttend (talk) 19:45, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi. If you have the time, please peer review this article. Best regards and a Happy Holiday season!!Dineshkannambadi (talk) 00:54, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks a lot. When you do get to it, please ignore the disruptive comments of a certian user who has generally been trying to make a nuisance of himself. Best regards, Dineshkannambadi (talk) 15:18, 21 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for your comments. As the main author of the article, I intended to cover the entire Kannada speaking region (Kingdom of Mysore, Kingdom of Keladi and other areas) prior to the advent of mature Modern literature. Given this, and having read the article, what do you think would be the appropriate name for it: Kannada literature, 1600–1900 CE or what it has been reverted to now. Your opinion helps.Dineshkannambadi (talk) 17:14, 26 December 2008 (UTC)
I will try to PR an article per your comment before the year end and in the earl days of Jan 2009. RegardsDineshkannambadi (talk) 15:19, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
I am currently on List of Governors of Bombay, which seems very interesting and is sort of "very close to home". Will take on one more later. yes, I agree PR's can be quite refreshing. They are not as hectic as FAC but can be very productive in the right hands.Dineshkannambadi (talk) 16:16, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi Ruhrfisch, I wanted to thank you for your very help PR of the above. I have been a bit distracted since, but the editors on the page will be working through your suggestions point by point aover the holidays. Sorry I havn't responded yet, but I was very please at the level of attention you gave the article, and am looking forward to responding. Ceoil (talk) 16:59, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

Dr. Hook

Thanks for the hook! I was trying to think of one myself. I'll use it. I had been thinking of getting an ABC's of DYK's for myself and then deciding not to even try. Now I am inspired to try again. The last one, Van Buren State Park, was not intentional. This one pretty much is. I was frustrated because I couldn't think of a hook. Now I am going to have to look at my DYK's and see what other letters I need to hit. Z is already done! --Dincher (talk) 22:14, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

I,J,X,Y. I and J will be covered with Ohio state parks, I hope. X and Y will be tougher. I could expand Youth Conservation Corps. I thought I saw one that looked like a Choess article. Some railroad? Will check. I am hoping to work on Independence Dam State Park tonight. Happy Festivus, working till midnight then back in at 7am. Might as well sleep here. Dincher (talk) 02:29, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

I replied to your Summer Street question on the commons side. Dincher (talk) 03:42, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Independence Dam State Park is done. Any hook ideas? I am thinking on it, but it's pretty early in the morning and I didn't get much sleep. Dincher (talk) 12:27, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
Thank you. Thank you. Hairy Chrismoose.--Dincher (talk) 15:40, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

I had thought about Yellow Creek State Park too. Also there's a Yellow something state forest in Ohio. Dincher (talk) 16:20, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Erie County also has a lot red-linked NRHP listings that need doing. I took the liberty of adding categories to Candy Cane Lane (hope you don't mind). Nothing that spectacular happens here to write about :-) Except for maybe the Bicentennial Tower being decked out for Christmas (I'll have to put up a photo). --D.B.talkcontribs 06:33, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

DYK for Candy Cane Lane

Updated DYK query On 26 December, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Candy Cane Lane, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Nice work! Dincher (talk) 15:52, 26 December 2008 (UTC)
Congrats to you too. I enjoyed reading Candy Cane Lane. There's something similar in Portland on Peacock Lane. That's its actual name, which is a nice coincidence when it's lit up as bright as a peacock. Finetooth (talk) 00:22, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your photos. I removed the gallery as they are generally discouraged in FA articles per the MOS. I did move the creek photo up into the article and removed the Important Bird Area terrace photo as the MOS says not to sandwich text between images. I also added a fair use rationale to the statue image. Could you move the gallery images to Commons so they are in the park category there? All of this is discussed on the park's talk page, please weigh in there and thanks for the lovely photos. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 18:38, 26 December 2008 (UTC)

  • Thanks?! The statue image should have already had fair use rationale attached. Mrmcdonnell (talk) 20:41, 26 December 2008 (UTC)
  • Nevermind, I see what you did there. Thanks! Mrmcdonnell (talk) 21:24, 26 December 2008 (UTC)
  • That's correct. Good eye!! Mrmcdonnell (talk) 23:22, 26 December 2008 (UTC)

Ohio "Penndot" Maps

I need to get a link the the Ohio road maps that are similar to the Pennsylvania road maps we use in the Pennsylvania state parks. Specifically I need to know the county in which Mary Jane Thurston State Park is. Do you have the link? I am can find is web sites that sell maps. I don't want to buy a map of Ohio. I pretty much doubt that I'll be going there anytime soon if at all ever again.

Thanks. I knew the park was at least partly in Wood County, but it looks like it could cross into another county. I will leave it as is.--Dincher (talk) 00:39, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
Mary Jane Thurston State Park awaits a hook. I am thinking something like ...that 14 acres of Mary Jane Thurston State Park was donated by its namesake schoolteacher? Dincher (talk) 01:36, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
I guess I should have looked at the park map! Dincher (talk) 02:35, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for improving the hook. I shall nominate it now. Dincher (talk) 02:58, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi Ruhr. At last, Columbia Slough is ready for vetting, and I've listed it at PR. Any advice you'd care to give would be much appreciated. Finetooth (talk) 00:37, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

New South Greenland Map

Mike Christie has suggested, during his review of New South Greenland, that the map ought to indicate Morrell's calculated position for 17 March - from where he thought he saw "mountains" 70-odd miles to the south. I agree it would be good to have this latitude - 67°52'S - marked. Is it possible to make another dot, with the legend:"67°52'S: Morrell's calculated position 17 March 1823"? I hope you had, or are having, some break from duty. The peer review on this article will go on for at least another eight or ten days, so need to hurry to meet this request. Thank you for your Christmas message, and all good wishes for 2009. Brianboulton (talk) 16:12, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for fixing the map. I have forced it to 300px and it is perfectly legible though someone might query this size. During your quiet week I will try to keep the PR backlog within reasonable limits. Brianboulton (talk) 10:36, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

Hello, Ruhrfisch!

Hello, Ruhrfisch. I was just thinking to myself that I had not seen you much around, and wondered if you were still with us. A quick look over your contribs shows you are still quite active, just not in the same corners of WP that I tend to hangf out in. So I figured I'd send you a quick "hello". We passed our RFA the same week, and we seemed to somehow survive the year since! Be well, friend, and appy New Year. Jerry delusional ¤ kangaroo 01:50, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

WSH/FLA baseball seasons

Thanks for checking those articles for me. Other than the one about renaming Washington's article to include Montreal in the title (I asked about that, and only the team that exists today is to be listed (like Oakland Athletics seasons even though they were in Philly longer, same as San Francisco Giants seasons vs. NY, and Los Angeles Dodgers seasons vs Brooklyn, etc), they're all great suggestions that I will delve into when I have a little more free time. Thanks again for all your help! :-) EaglesFanInTampa 18:41, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
