I have added an image which shows the evolution of Kannada script. It is taken from an old book and it is already torn. Hope it may be helpful to everyone who is interested in the language. Also I created an article called "Karnataka history timeline". Check it out if possible.

Kannada literature in the Kingdom of Mysore

"Kannada literature in the Kingdom of Mysore is a body of literature composed from about 1600 CE, the date of the earliest known work" is a contardiction to the section "Literature prior to 16th century". I am not sure how a kingdom can have no literature in 2 centuries (1399 CE foundation to 1600). --Redtigerxyz ^Talk 15:06, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Kamat's book

Do you know if there are substantial differences between the 2001 edition (the one used in the Kingdom of Mysore article) and the original 1980 version of the Kamat book? The 1980 version has a mere 11 pages on Mysore between 1399 and 1799 and I'm having a hard time reconciling the text of the article with the material in the book (I don't have access to the 2001 version). Not sure how much difference there could be. I can check later on when I get home. Also, if you can tell me which part of the article and which sentences you are having trouble reconciling, we can get together and resolve it. There has been lots of paraphrasing and copy editing done, in addition to usage of other books (Subrahmanyam and Chopra etc). I'll try. But, since the page numbers are totally different, it's hard. Let me know the length of the section on Wodeyars before 1799 in the 2001 edition. The pages completely about Wodeyars up to 1799 AD is also 11 pages but the page numbers may not be the same. But he also discusses Mysore relations with regards to Chitradurga Nayakas, Yelahanka Nadaprabhus and the Marathas in about 10 other pages. In addition, information about sources of Mysore history are discussed in 2 pages early on in the book too.Dineshkannambadi (talk) 01:46, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

Changed my mind

As I noted in my recent comment at Talk:Kingdom_of_Mysore, I have changed my mind about helping you copyedit the article Kingdom_of_Mysore. I still do not know if you or Fowler&fowler et al are more correct in basic content issues, but the addition of four tags to the article immediately after the FARC indicates there should be a productive response. At a minimum, we should be able to improve the article's wording for current readers while content changes are being discussed. -- Michael Devore (talk) 08:42, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

I dont see any content changes happening unless the taggers realise that the only path is the path of discussion. Adding tags and stuff dont work and if anything, weakens their arguement.Dineshkannambadi (talk) 14:33, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

As you wish, but I will likely continue posting on sections which are not being actively edited. You or others may, in a small way, find the comments helpful when edits commence. I don't think the comments could be used against either your article content or its FA status. The list should be a net positive if copyedits can reduce areas of contention and help damp the fires over there.

Although multiple tagging after the FARC must be frustrating, you may have an uphill battle getting all of the current tags removed (though, even assuming I agreed with the opposition, one tag with a talk page pointer ought to be enough). POV tagging disputes can be difficult to resolve because they are not entirely factual in nature, worse when they involve the glacially slow processes of dispute resolution. I did remove the cleanup tag based on commonly judged quality thresholds for clearing articles from the cleanup list given its 2-year backlog and in comparison to most articles already tagged for cleanup. -- Michael Devore (talk) 17:56, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

I'm not trying to sabotage the article. I think that the history section is pretty accurate and conforms with what diverse sources say and I'm ok with the title. I do feel that you and F&f need to figure out a way to make the article better, particularly by increasing the diversity of sources, but that's up to you guys. In creating this article i have referred to most of Kannada literature sources, some of which are really rare [ex; Bombay gazetteer in Karnataka: Dharwad,Belgaum,Bijapur and Kannara districts, Venkataramgo Katti; Kaada toreya jaadu: Autobiography of Kadidal Shamanna; Kagodu ondu nenapu, C.B.Chandrashekhar;The Nayakas of Ikkeri, K.D.Swaminathan;,Bimba-Pratibimba, Dr.L.R.Hegde;D.L.N Avara Ayda Lekhana, Kamala Hampana]. These form a necessary part of the glorious literary tradition of Kannada language and need to be seconded. hence i request you to kindly review the page.

offlate, i have been facing unilateral notices on the material without a proper knowledgable discussion on the topic. the member issuing notices seems to lack relevent knowledge in the subject and is defintely biased. but the warnings and unwarranted editing may lead to the page loosing out on the precious information derived from above mentioned sources. Lingayatism

As a person from Karnataka where there are a large number of followers of Lingayatism,I find the article in a bad shape with lot of POV.Also Lingayat is not a caste.Lingayats are found in several castes on the contrary(Will be giving links for the same).However,they identify themselves as Lingayats and not by their caste since Basavanna's main motive was to fight Caste System.I'll be gratified if someone comes forward to help me edit this article.:)-Raghavan(Talk) 16:53, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

Devanga

I appreciate your extensive articles and research work on Karnataka and the various dynasties that ruled Karnataka. I am interested in getting more information on the Kannada speaking Devanga community who are said to be prakrut brahmins from Ujjain and descendents of Rashtrakuta or Paramara dynasties but later fought as warriors for the Vijayanagara empire. Infact well known Devang king Bhoja fought against the invading islamic ruler Ghanavi who plundered Somnath temple and drove him upto Lahore. Could you please trace the roots and later evolution of this community. How did they evolve from being a royal community to a warrior community and then to a weaving community. Do you have any research done on Devangas. Are Devangas actually origins of Karnataka. Please reply to user mallyahm. Thanks

Hello, ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ. I see that you were actively involved in editing the Western Ghats article. 60% of Western Ghats lies in Karnataka and that's a fact right? Then why is it removed from the article? I guess somebody who's jealous that majority of the world heritage site lies in Karnataka has removed this sentence? And who on earth was it claiming that you were promoting Karnataka? You were doing a good job in adding some images of the Western Ghats in the state and expanding the article on a large scale. I would be glad to work with you on the article so that it becomes a GA. Hoysala literature is the large body of literature in the Kannada and Sanskrit languages produced by the Hoysala Empire (1025–1343) in what is now southern India. Kannada literature during this period consisted of writings relating to the socio-religious developments of the Jain and Veerashaiva faiths, and to a lesser extent that of the Vaishnava faith. The earliest well-known brahmin writers in Kannada were from the Hoysala court. While most of the courtly textual production was in Kannada, an important corpus of monastic Vaishnava literature relating to Dvaita (dualistic) philosophy was written by the renowned philosopher Madhvacharya in Sanskrit. Writing Kannada literature in native metres was first popularised by the court poets. These metres were the sangatya, compositions sung to the accompaniment of a musical instrument; shatpadi, six-line verses; ragale, lyrical compositions in blank verse; and tripadi, three-line verses. However, Jain writers continued to use the traditional champu, composed of prose and verse. Important literary contributions in Kannada were made not only by court poets but also by noblemen, commanders, ministers, ascetics and saints associated with monasteries. (more...)

The Vijayanagara Empire was an empire based in South Indian in the Deccan Plateau region. It was established in 1336 by Harihara I and his brother Bukka Raya I of the Yadava lineage. The empire rose to prominence as a culmination of attempts by the southern powers against Islamic invasions by the end of the 13th century. It lasted until 1646 although its power declined after a major military defeat in 1565 by the Deccan sultanates. The empire is named after its capital city of Vijayanagara, whose impressive ruins surround modern Hampi, now a World Heritage Site in modern Karnataka, India. The writings of medieval European travelers such as Domingo Paes, Fernão Nunes and Niccolò Da Conti and the literature in local vernaculars provide crucial information about its history. Efficient administration and vigorous overseas trade brought new technologies like water management systems for irrigation. They are known as Western Gangas to distinguish them from the Eastern Gangas who in later centuries ruled over modern Odisha. Though territorially a small kingdom, the Western Ganga contribution to polity, culture and literature of the modern south Karnataka region is considered important. The Western Ganga kings showed benevolent tolerance to all faiths but are most famous for their patronage towards Jainism resulting in the construction of monuments in places such as Shravanabelagola and Kambadahalli. The kings of this dynasty encouraged the fine arts due to which literature in Kannada and Sanskrit flourished. Chavundaraya's writing, Chavundaraya Purana of 978 CE, is an important work in Kannada prose. Many classics were written on various subjects ranging from religion to elephant management. (more...)
