Westheimer Parkway and Westheimer Road[edit]

Westheimer Parkway, which is in Cinco Ranch, splits from Westheimer Road. Westheimer Road itself ends at the Westpark Tollway. WhisperToMe (talk) 01:29, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Rpclod. I have made a start on reviewing the above article for the GA review. To me it reads like a biography of the man, whereas I consider that the article's here because he's notable as a dairy scientist, and maybe some aspects of his biography should be subordinated to a description of his career and achievements. Ning ning (talk) 08:54, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Amendment- for "I consider" replace with "perhaps it could be considered". Ning ning (talk) 08:57, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Article's looking good (was good before!)- I'll have a careful read of it later tonight. Viz Hunzicker's father- can a case be made for his notability? I saw the speedy deletion notice- I think the bot notice about it being a copy is spurious. Don't worry about the stub getting deleted as you can recreate it later. Ning ning (talk) 17:17, 22 August 2008 (UTC) According to one commenter (I can't find the comment now), the fact that Karl Otto was a politician makes him inherently notable. Go figure!--Rpclod (talk) 12:39, 29 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The fact that his textbook on condensed milk and dried milk is still in print after 94 years- I was amazed! You have quoted from the fourth edition and linked to PDFs of the second and third editions- would it be useful to the article to make more of this 7th edition- maybe provide some context as to why it's still being used, and the differences between the editions? Ning ning (talk) 20:12, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I only just noted the above comment. I am not aware of major differences among the editions but will try to review to see. I also asked some contacts at Purdue University (where O F was dairy dept head).--Rpclod (talk) 12:36, 29 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Condensed Milk Editions[edit]

The changes to the 2nd and 3rd editions are set forth below in their prefaces. I do not know the subsequent changes to later editions as I do not have access to them. In fact I have never seen any reference to the fourth or fifth editions. Their existence is implied by the sixth and seventh editions. (But, then again, the Traveling Wilburys only have Volumes 1 and 3.) I have been unable to obtain any contact information for the publisher of the seventh edition (Cartwright Press) and assume that this addition is merely a re-print of an earlier edition.

PREFACE FOR SECOND EDITION

Since the issuance of the First Edition of this treatise many changes have taken place in the various phases of the Condensed Milk Industry. Old processes have been modified and improved, new processes have been invented, the equipment used for manu- facture has undergone changes, new tests have been devised for the determination of the composition of the finished products and the entire status of the industry has yielded to an unexpected, unforeseen and important evolution.

Of the most outstanding new features in this edition may be mentioned the chapters on the Continuous Concentrator, the Standardization of Condensed Milk and Milk Powder, Malted Milk, the Mojonnier Test, Bacteriological Analyses. Important additions have also been made to the chapters on History of the Industry, Volume of Output, Markets, Exports, Imports, Cost of Manufacture and the various processes of manufacture of Condensed Milk, Condensed Buttermilk and Milk Powder.

In preparing the Second Edition, the author has endeavored to completely revise the old edition, incorporating in the revised edition the many changes which the tooth of time has wrought and to bring this treatise in all its important phases up-to-date.

PREFACE FOR THIRD EDITION

Since the issuance of the First and Second Editions of this treatise many changes have taken place in the various phases of the Condensed Milk Industry. Old processes have been modified and improved, new processes have been invented, the equipment used for manufacture has undergone changes, new tests have been devised for the determination of the composition of the finished products and the entire status of the industry has yielded to an unexpected, unforeseen and important evolution.

Of the most outstanding new features in this edition may be mentioned the chapters on Directions for the Standardization of the Sterilizing Process, Evaporated Milk Control, Use of the Mojonnier Viscometer, Manufacture of Condensed Buttermilk and Buttermilk Powder, New Patents and Processes for the Manufacture of Milk Powders. Important additions have also been made to the chapters on History of the Industry, Volume of Output, Markets, Exports, Imports, Cost of Manufacture, Standardization of Condensed Milk, and Prevention of Condensed Milk and Milk Powder Defects.

In preparing this Edition, the author has endeavored to completely revise the old edition, incorporating in the revised edition the many changes which the tooth of time has wrought and to bring this treatise in all its important phases up-to-date.

Hunzicker[edit]

Hi. I'll read through the article this weekend; I don't think there's any outstanding matters, it's a fine article. Apologies for slowness on my part- been pretty busy, which is why I put it on hold. Ning ning (talk) 14:34, 5 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've put the Good Article label on- congratulations! I am sure this is the first of many you will create. I have a problem in that there is no category in the Good Article(Food and Drink) list appropriate for Mr. Hunziker- he's not a chef, a cook, a food or a drink. Perhaps you can create a section for him? If I've not done anything I should have done, please let me know. Regards Ning-ning (talk) 21:02, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There are a couple of minor issues with the recent GA assessment for the above article. I've commented in more detail on the article talk page. Regards, EyeSerenetalk 12:24, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That was fast work! I'm glad you didn't mind my comments - I thought that since the article has only just passed GA, it would be quicker and easier to sort this out between ourselves rather than unnecessarily list the article at WP:GAR. I've already left the reviewer a note; they've done a good job overall, but it's easy to miss things (we've all done it, though the lead as it was did rather stand out!)
Regarding your edits, I think the lead is fine now. It does its job of summarising the article, and establishes the Professor's claim to notability. The new section headings make more sense too.
We could probably do with explicit citations for the second paragraph of Early years - especially the assertion "Otto Hunziker was likely influenced by Dr. Niklaus Gerber who studied at the University of Zürich and worked for two years at the Swiss-American Milk Company in Little Falls, New York.", as this is speculative and will come over as editor commentary unless it's cited to a source that expresses the same speculation. Also, the final paragraph of Family life is uncited.
Finally, "Children of Otto and Florence include:"... implies that there are more children than are listed. Maybe "were", or something more definite? Lists are strongly discouraged by the WP:MOS too, so perhaps the list of children could be worked into prose?
I hope this helps. I'll list the article on WP:GA when we're done (it's normally the reviewer's job). All the best, EyeSerenetalk 14:42, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for those comments. Of course, I cannot find the influence reference now. So I re-wrote the paragraph. I think that it adds context to Hunziker's career, but please let me know what you think. I have also changed the language regarding Hunziker's children.--Rpclod (talk) 20:15, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Just a quick note per your last (haven't had time to look at the article again yet): I've copied the various talk-page comments into the GA review on the article page to keep everything together. I'll respond there. EyeSerenetalk 11:22, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

An individual user (Addbc) has been replacing every mention of University of Wisconsin in WP to University of Wisconsin-Madison, irrespective of whether it's an anachronism. I changed the reference to the school in the Hunziker article, along with others. Good luck with the GA status nomination! --Sift&Winnow 13:30, 25 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

GA userbox award[edit]

Thank you for the additional work you have put in to get the article to GA status, and to Ning-ning for his review. You have earned one of these:

which you may like to place on your user page (or somewhere suitable) by copy/pasting {{User Good Article|Otto Frederick Hunziker}} into the page code.

Alternatively, some editors prefer: {{click|link=Otto Frederick Hunziker|image=Symbol support vote.svg|width=15px|height=15px|title=This user made significant contributions to Otto Frederick Hunziker, which is a good article.}} which adds a clickable GA symbol to your page that links to the article.

Great job - well done! EyeSerenetalk 11:46, 11 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

East Penn[edit]

Sorry, I was in a hurry just then, but it was rather rude of me. Either East Pennsylvania Railroad or Lebanon Valley Branch is going to get an article eventually, and I don't want to lose the link to that particular part of the Reading by subsuming it into a link directly to the company. I'm not going to write it in the near future, though, so I've tagged it as a "redirect with possibilities" and redirected to Reading Company at the moment. Hope that is satisfactory.

BTW, I appreciate your work in creating Swabia Creek and Hensingersville, Pennsylvania; I always like to see somewhat obscure local geography get some attention. Choess (talk) 01:46, 1 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Indonesia articles[edit]

Hi -- glad someone got back to me...I was feeling that I maybe I had taken a heavy hand:-) Regarding religious freedom, I feel that my only area of expertise is the human rights area. I can certainly add more there, and also make the article more readable. This was my first crack at the whole process. I feel totally unqualified to address the entire topic, which is why I made the heading(s) I did. The 2007 State Department information was pretty awful -- I tried to at first put my edits into that, but it seemed useless. I'm sure there are more current articles on the wider topic available all over the place, but I don't feel qualified to be the one putting them up. So, is it better to have bad/outdated/US Government information there, or nothing at all?

Here is the 2010 version of what I took down: http://www.state.gov/j/drl/rls/irf/2010/148869.htm It still suffers from being a government document...and if I were to try to upgrade the article, I think I'd take parts of this but then reference back to the whole document, with an eye to being impartial? — Preceding unsigned comment added by ClaudiaVandermade (talkcontribs) 19:14, 27 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Marcerickson and Oil/Tar Sands[edit]

"Marcerickson" - please stop leaving me emails and messages. The issue of how to name the article titled "Oil sands" was previously and extensively discussed. A decision (in which I was not involved) was definitively made to call the article "Oil Sands" and not "Tar Sands". I realize that you are disappointed by this decision but it is not longer open for debate. You are always welcome to add substantive content with references to the article itself. Please note that any substantive content related specifically to the Athabasca oil sands (a.k.a., Athabasca tar sands) should be added to that article rather than the generic article.--Rpclod (talk) 15:31, 6 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ooooh! Closed for all time? Not. I want the discussion reopened. Disappointed? You fail to understand. Disappointment is appropriate when talking about personal desires. This is far larger than that.

Letter to Jimmy Wales The article on oil sands is a misnomer

It should be tar sands. I have been told by the page guardian that the debate has answered the question - no it HAS NOT been answered. The decision taken was WRONG. Oil sands is the term that the oil industry wants us to use. The discussion talks about the term "Oil sands" being more popular in Canada and "tar sands" more popular in the US – I suppose that is true if you watch TV or listen to the radio, which have industry ads on them using that term.

But I lived in the blue collar headquarters of the Alberta oil industry (Edmonton) from 2002 to 2007 and I went to Fort McMurray looking for work and the only term I heard used to describe them was tar sands. Recognizing things for what they are starts with calling them by their correct name. SOME deposits are oil - most are similar to tar. Tar sands is the best descriptor of what they are. The product extracted before upgrading does not flow at room temperature (it is a solid) and needs chemical processing that adds hydrogen to the bitumen so that it becomes a substance that most people would describe as oil. That is a massive process.

Just getting the dirt out of the bitumen is a huge undertaking that is extremely polluting – it requires immense amounts of water and heat - it takes A LOT of both substances. The heat is usually provided by burning natural gas. You can read "Tar Sands: Dirty Oil and the Future of a Continent" by Andrew Nikiforuk: http://www.amazon.ca/dp/1553655559 for more background - available at your local library or on Inter Library Loan. Or you can Google for Andrew Nikiforuk's stories, many of which you will find at TheTyee.ca (a national Excellence in Journalism award winner: http://thetyee.ca/Blogs/TheHook/2013/06/14/CJF-Award-Win-2013/).

By insisting upon the name "oil sands" instead of the correct term tar sands, you are abnegating any responsibility that you share for the promotion and consumption of this petroleum product. Any of us who use oil (and that is all of us) is guilty. The way to the sensible path of not developing this toxic product and moving to cleaner energy sources (tar sands only gets out 3 - 5 times more energy than is put into producing it - unlike conventional oil's 10 or 20 to one ratio) is to first call it by its proper name.

Experts say that mining the tar sands is a bad idea – and mining IS the correct term. It’s dug with shovels and moved in dump trucks. Can you dig a liquid or move it in a dump truck? Dumping toxic waste into tailings ponds right beside the Athabasca River is a bad idea - one is on an island in the river! They leak. They ALL leak!

Offloading our current extraction responsibilities to the future – meaning the mining waste we leave behind - is a bad idea. Did you know that the tailings ponds for the Athabasca deposits (there are more than 20 of them) are massive? They total 176 sq. km/68 sq. mi., the largest is 27 km/17 mi. long and 82 metres/270 ft. high, and it’s right beside the Athabasca River (most of them are less than 10 km/7 mi. away). They are so full of heavy metals and other shit that they don’t freeze at -30 C / -22 F!

Downstream communities are reporting a higher than normal number of cancers – some of which are very rare. The Athabasca is part of the Mackenzie River basin which drains about one fifth of Canada and one tenth of Canada and the US combined. If one of those ponds was breached, it would be an ecological disaster we have never seen before that will poison the Athabasca, Mackenzie, and Beaufort Sea (which washes Alaskan shores also) for decades!

I cannot win an edit war. I contribute some to this project, and my contributions will be reduced if you persist in contributing to continuing the current Wikipedia culture that Andrew Leonard described in "Revenge, ego and the corruption of Wikipedia": http://www.salon.com/2013/05/17/revenge_ego_and_the_corruption_of_wikipedia/

I beg you – please call the tar sands by its correct name!

Sincerely, Marc Erickson

Hello Rpclod,

You are receiving this message because you have a one-year subscription to Newspapers.com through the Wikipedia Library. This is a brief update, to remind you about that access:

  • Please make sure that you can still log in to your Newspapers.com account. If you are having trouble let me know.
  • Remember, if you find this source useful for your Wikipedia work, to include citations with links on Wikipedia. Links to partner resources are one of the few ways we can demonstrate usage and demand for accounts to our partners. The greater the linkage, the greater the likelihood a useful partnership will be renewed. Also, keep in mind that part of Newspapers.com is open access via the clipping function. Clippings allow you to identify particular articles, extract them from the original full sheet newspaper, and share them through unique URLs. Wikipedia users who click on a clipping link in your citation list will be able to access that particular article, and the full page of the paper if they come from the clipping, without needing to subscribe to Newspapers.com. For more information about how to use clippings, see http://www.newspapers.com/basics/#h-clips .
  • Do you write unusual articles using this partner's sources? Did access to this source create new opportunities for you in the Wikipedia community? If you have a unique story to share about your contributions, let me know and we can set up an opportunity for you to write a blog post about your work with one of our partner's resources.

Finally, we would greatly appreciate it if you filled out this short survey. Your input will help us to facilitate this particular partnership, and to discover what other partnerships and services the Wikipedia Library can offer.

Thank you,

Masta Wu[edit]

Hi! I write here because it is not related. But you mention that you don't see how these charts are national charts. It's very simple, just look at the bottom of the Gaon website: Korea Music Content Industry Association (http://kmcia.or.kr/) They control the music industry data in Korea, all digital and physical charts. Here is a description of Gaon from The Korea Times: [1] The Predeccessor of KMCIA was MIAK [2]. These are pretty much nation-wide. As for critcism and the like, I don't think that's a must for establishing notability. The fact that we don't speak Korean and cannot expand the article with more content doesn't mean that the person is not notable, it just means that the article is a stub to be expanded... I know enough Korean to find specific information I am looking for, like release dates, names, connections, titles and the like and understand simple sentences (I have a Level 1/2 TOPIK certificate, which equals an A2 level in European language exam terms). Unfortunately I am not fluent to write a whole article based on Korean sources. When my Korean gets better, I definitely will. And yes, I am persistent, because I feel it is unfair that the rules are apllied more "strictly" with non-English people's articles. 12 sources would have been enough for any English context person to establish notability. It's just simply unfair that there is this English bias among editors. I've been listening to Korean music for some years now, so I can safely say Masta Wu is a notable Korean artist. And there are plenty of sources in the article to prove that. } Teemeah 편지 (letter) 12:03, 26 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have mentioned the reference of two leading news paper - Khaleej Times and Gulf news of UAE for my write up and notable presence.

Al Wathba is available on world famous finance site Bloomberg and Also on major abu dhabi government site.

You've been unsubscribed from the Feedback Request Service[edit]

Hi Rpclod! You're receiving this notification because you were previously subscribed to the Feedback Request Service, but you haven't made any edits to the English Wikipedia in over a year.

In order to declutter the Feedback Request Service list, and to produce a greater chance of active users being randomly selected to receive invitations to contribute, you've been unsubscribed, along with all other users who have made no edits in two years or more.

You do not need to do anything about this - if you are happy to not receive Feedback Request Service messages, thank you very much for your contributions in the past, and this will be the last you hear from the service. If, however, you would like to resubscribe yourself, you can follow the below instructions to do so:

  1. Go to the Feedback Request Service page.
  2. Decide which categories are of interest to you, under the RfC and/or GA headings.
  3. Paste {{Frs user|Rpclod|limit}} underneath the relevant heading(s), where limit is the maximum number of requests you wish to receive for that category per month.
  4. Publish the page.

If you've just come back after a wikibreak and are seeing this message, welcome back! You can follow the above instructions to re-activate your subscription. Likewise, if this is an alternate account, please consider subscribing your main account in much the same way.

Note that if you had a rename and left your old name subscribed to the FRS, you may be receiving this message on your new username's talk page still. If so, make sure your new account name is subscribed to the FRS, using the same procedure mentioned above.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask on the Feedback Request Service talk page, or on the Feedback Request Service bot's operator's talk page. Thank you!
