Hutchison effect

I'm too late to vote, but my vote would have been "Move to Hutchison effect and improve". Hutchison is a crank, and his "effect" deserves an honest encyclopedic treatment, but now all the first Google results are crackpot sites. Ignorance wins again.  :( It makes me sad that scammers can just send an email to Wikimedia and have the truth censored like this. As I said in the AFD, the redirect Hutchison effect use to be a standalone article. IMHO it had BLP issues but since it wasn't subject to an AFD (there was one from 2004 but it wasn't closed and it doesn't seem that there was a consensus to delete) there's nothing to keep you from restoring it and cleaning it up but I would recommend a new article from scratch or cleaning it up in your userspace first. --Ron Ritzman (talk) 23:17, 20 November 2011 (UTC)

Once I looked in, I realized that the template-created Find sources was absolutely useless using the parameters assigned by the AFd template. I agree that this unsourced stub was a bad article and I agree with its deletion but I would like to make a few points (I would have responded to this in the AFD but it snow closed). I actually first noticed this in another forum I participate in and looked to see if it was on wikipedia, noticed that it was deleted by PROD and checked the history. I was going to leave it be but I couldn't help but notice that RZuljani had removed the PROD tag but that removal was reverted without an edit summary, therefore I undeleted the article. I do not view this as "process wonkery". PROD is for articles that nobody gives a damn about (but that should not be the sole reason for deletion) and the fact that the PROD was removed shows that somebody does indeed "give a damn" and that someone should have been allowed to have his say in an AFD if he wished to do so. I believe that our deletion processes need not only be fair but appear to be fair and having one's objection to a PROD reverted without comment doesn't appear "fair".
Also, IMHO this article wasn't a "slam dunk" delete. It's probably too early for this subject to have an article but it is covered on Know Your Meme. I haven't looked for other supersources but that should have been enough for it to at least go to AFD and a delete decision there would have made it immune to re-creations, particularly if it went the full 7 days
As a side note, it seems to be articles that everybody but me thinks are obvious deletes that get me in trouble, see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Festivalism for another example. I removed a PROD that just said "HUH" and got roasted for it. It seems that I have a higher "WTF threshold" then many editors. First request for Ultimatum (American band)

I am not a moderator and never edit any page, so forgive me if I am doing this incorrectly. I noticed that you deleted the Ultimatum (band) page for the American Heavy Metal Band, Ultimaum. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Ultimatum_%28American_band%29 Apparently the band was taken down because, "WP:MUSIC#5 - "Has released two or more albums on a major label or on one of the more important indie labels."

Ultimatum have released records on Massacre Records, Rowe Productions and Retroactive Records. Anyone with even the remotest knowledge of the Christian metal genre which they are a part of would know that these are well known and respected labels. Retroactive Records is an active label with a roster that includes some very well known names in the CCM and Christian Metal genre. To say they are not an "important indie label" would be an ignorant judgment call.

As well, the band has a 20 year history, has toured the country and have been on many, many compilation albums on many different labels. If you are not familiar with Christian metal, then I respectfully ask that you not make judgement calls on what "important indie labels" are for that genre.

Restoration of article Ultimatum (American band)

Dear Mr. Ritzman,

I am writing to you because you deleted the article "Ultimatum (American band), and I believe that deletion was not warranted. The reason for the initial request was the there was "no notability and seems like self advertising." As for seeming like self-advertising, that again is a purely speculative judgment call. The poster has no evidence that the page was self-promoting, only that it seems to be the case. I have read numerous band biographies that have been written by fans, as a I presume this article was, (including many on Wikipedia) and they all sound like that. So to use that as a criterion for deleting the article would mean that someone should review all similar articles and take the same action. Let me be clear that I am not advocating that course. If anything, this article and the ones like it should have been flagged for a need to be edited to include less bias.

Now, in the debate that followed, these were the reasons given for deletion: 

   Delete - I'm not convinced the band meets criterion #5. It's the important indie labels, not just ones that have articles on Wikipedia. -- Whpq (talk) 15:11, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

First, is there an established definition of "important indie labels"? And isn't it reasonable to believe the fact that there IS a Wikipedia article on a label is a statement by Wikipedia that the label is important enough for its artists to be given the same consideration? But moving on from the argument that Rowe Productions does not constitute an "important" indie label, this is not the only label for which Ultimatum recorded. It has also recorded for Retroactive Records, which is perhaps the leading indie label for Christian metal. Retroactive is or has been home to notable Christian metal giants like Saint, Bride, and Deliverance. It has also re-released material by Guardian, Titanic, and Daniel Band. There is no one with any knowledge of the current state of Christian metal that should not be familiar with Retroactive Records, and any talk of that not being an "important indie label" would quite frankly be based in ignorance of the subject. In addition to Rowe and Retroactive, Ultimatum has also recorded for Roxx Records, which is not only a significant Christian metal indie label in its own right (albums by Holy Soldier, Eternal Ryte, Crystavox, and the all-star band Liberty N Justice), but is also a partner in Intense Millennium Records, which has acquired the rights to most of the Frontline/Intense/Alarma catalog and has been working on releasing remastered versions of some of Christian metal and rock's classic albums from the late 1980s and early 1990s. Roxx has also partnered with the Christian Metal Realm, one of the leading Internet communities for Christian metal fans, to create a two tribute albums for the bands Deliverance and Saint (in process). Beyond these labels, Ultimatum has also recorded for Massacre Records--home to artists like Saviour Machine, Fates Warning, and King Diamond. I think that list speaks for itself as to Massacre's legitimacy as an important indie label.

So, in summary, I believe that the deletion of the article "Ultimatum (American band)" was not justified and that those who argued for its removal (Basileias, Whpg, Bigbird6, and JoshyDinda) lacked the necessary familiarity with the Christian metal scene and Ultimatum to make the judgments they did. Further, it seems that the decision to delete was based around an argument that Ultimatum does not meet one of the criterion for determining "notability." The guidelines in WP:MUSIC actually say "A musician or ensemble (note that this includes a band, singer, rapper, orchestra, DJ, musical theatre group, etc.) may be notable if it meets at least one of the following criteria," not that it will be excluded if it fails to meet one. To that end, Ultimatum:

Has been the subject of multiple, non-trivial, published works appearing in sources that are reliable and are independent from the musician or ensemble itself. --This would include HM Magazine and Heaven's Metal, the leading periodicals for Christian metal. It was the cover story for the March 2008 issue of Heaven's Metal

Has released two or more albums on a major label or on one of the more important indie labels (i.e. an independent label with a history of more than a few years, and with a roster of performers, many of whom are notable). --This has been demonstrated above

Has become one of the most prominent representatives of a notable style or the most prominent of the local scene of a city; note that the subject must still meet all ordinary Wikipedia standards, including verifiability. --Ultimatum is one of the premier thrash bands in Christian metal today.

Therefore, I request that the decision to delete this article be reversed and the article be restored.

Restore FH-Complete

Dear Mr. Ritzman, I am sorry for responding so late. Because all employees have been on holidays, we have not been able to join the discussion. We kindly ask to restore the article "FH-Complete". It is difficult to provide suitable web links for a piece of free software that is currently only being used at two universities of applied sciences, even though by over 4000 students and 1000 employees. Our target group is small, but we have received numerous inquiries from various educational institutions since there are hardly any alternative programs on the market. Therefore, it is important for us to inform the public of our software package. The article already mentions our presentation of FH-Complete at the Linuxwochen in Austria last year. We will also be presenting our program there again this year. I would be happy to also provide a link on the Campus page to our partner school FH St. Pölten, in order to document the relevant number of users. However, you said 2 things yourself that were almost an argument for deletion. Please restore Kenta Nagata

I'm stunned Kenta Nagata got deleted. Not enough knowledgeable people showed up to comment, just mindlessly deletionist drones. 1up [4] featured a long quote from him. WP:COMPOSER number one is met since he "Has credit for writing or co-writing either lyrics or music for a notable composition." Just look at how many things he has done. [5] Composer is a notable enough part of a video game to be listed in the infobox for video games, he listed all over the place, for many mega-hit games. His IMDb page list his works. [6] Most of the easily to find news coverage for the guy is in a different language of course. [7] A proper search of only sites listed in the Video game Wikiprojects list of reliable sources shows more results, including an interview he did here [8] Some places even review his work quite positively [9] and mention you can buy the soundtrack of it also. After examining the discussion closer, the only issue I see is that many of google news hits were in Spanish and it's possible that some delete !voters might not have considered that. However, at lease one of the !voters had "Spanish" as one of his babel boxes so I can only assume that he did examine them. I will concede that more participation from Spanish speakers would have been helpful but you will have to make your argument at DRV. Restoration of Ultimatum (American Band)

Ron, I appreciate your restoring Ultimatum to my sandbox for improvement. Over the past couple of weeks, I've worked on improving the article, adding references, and clarifying the importance of the labels the band is on. I personally believe that the article now meets WP:MUSIC under #1 (I provided links to several genre magazines and music websites like Blabbermouth) and #5 (Massacre Records is fairly large in the really heavy metal genre and Retroactive Records has a large repertoire of artists with both original and re-release material). I've expanded upon the band's history and have worked with them to understand the importance of secondary sources instead of primary sources. While it's certainly not up to Featured Article standards, I do believe it is a start- or stub-class candidate for restoration at this time (although continued work will be done to improve the albums, etc.). Sorry, I haven't' had time to do much wiki stuff lately. Since it was deleted by AFD, the best course of action is to present the current draft to deletion review. Actually, treating an AFD as an expired PROD is not policy or guideline (I've actually proposed it twice and it was rejected twice) so it's something I do very rarely, mostly for BLPs. The reason I did it for Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/CeCors was because the article was an orphan and a 1 line stub that's almost a CSD A7 candidate. (and in hind site I probably should have deleted it as an "A7") However, Tryon Coterie, while unsourced, asserts significance and has 21 article space links. MSU Interview

Dear Ron Ritzman,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.


So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.


Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. DARE Championship

DARE Championship is a mixed martial arts event which was deleted because the page was created after only one event. They have now put on three events with a fourth taking place next month and are the only MMA promotion in Thailand and have received coverage from some notable mainstream media like CNN and MMA media like Bloody Elbow and MMA Mania. Mock chop

I note that consensus has been reached regarding the non-notability of this item. However, with all due respect, these are people who have simply never heard of one or encountered one and due to the paucity of information available on the internet, have passed it off as a myth. It's not 'likely' that it exists, it DOES exist. I've subsequently received a reply from Speyside Specialities (http://www.speysidespecialities.co.uk/), the largest supplier of mock chops in Scotland (directly to fish and chip shops and via wholesale), complete with some basic information on what they are and how they are made, along with production figures of 3/4 tonne per week (surely notable that such an amount of something is being made by one company on a weekly basis?). Also, there is the fact that 11 Asda stores in the UK are to take orders of the mock chop beginning this month. As Asda is the UK's second largest supermarket chain, this is at least moderately notable. It's also unfortunate that you weren't aware of our guideline wrt conflict of interest. One indication that a subject might be notable (but by itself not sufficient) is if a neutral editor "takes note of" the subject and elects to write an article about it. However, per your confession of being connected to the podcast, you are not that editor. It would have been better if you had waited for one of your listeners to write the article. Regular AFD participants are sensitive to the issue of COI and that might be one of the reasons that nobody considered the possibility that some of the content of the article could have been merged to Elliott Webb. Therefore, I've redirected Flaps Podcast to there. In the future, if the podcast itself gets more overage, the standalone article might be restored. --Ron Ritzman (talk) 01:46, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

If you click above where it says "afd", you will see that there was a discussion and the consensus was that the article should be deleted. Also, it does concern me that your username suggests that either you are the subject of the article or someone closely connected with him. One possible indication that a subject may be notable (but in itself not enough to pass WP:N) is if a neutral editor "takes note of" the subject and elects to write an article on it and one can't "take note of" oneself. If we are to have an article on KNERO in the future, it would be best if it weren't written by him or anybody associated with him. I remember once in high school (and yes I think it was on Apr 1st) the teacher gave us a weird kind of "test". it was a list of about 2 dozen instructions. The first instruction was to "read the entire list before doing anything" followed by other instructions such as, tearing off corners, folding the test in half, poking it with a pencil, and various other things designed to mutilate the test paper. The last instruction was to ignore the entire list, sign your name and turn it in. Most of the class failed. The AFC proposal was a joke and that's why I struck everything except the "punch line" at the end. I think that one thing this demonstrates is that many people "oppose" (or support) without reading the entire proposal and thinking it through. This may be one of the reasons that many proposals fail. In any case, a proposal such as that wouldn't fly (and it probably wouldn't scale) and I would never seriously propose it but it is an interesting idea. Well you have a point about fan cruft being a major problem.. But I've put various anime and in universe junk up for AFD before and they always got a resounding keep. Its fair enough that some people find it useful but it most certainly bends the idea of what constitutes an "encyclopedia". In regards to sports its become an almanac.. I wasn't asking a question. I simply stated that there were no real arguments for deletion. You mentioned Alexa rank which is not a criteria and the only other participant said that there was no "lasting notability" but notability is not temporary. As an administrator yourself you know that AFD is a discussion, not a "vote" and after 3 weeks, I didn't see anybody provide a reason why that article should be deleted. It may indeed fail WP:WEB, I don't know (If I had an opinion one way or the other I would have !voted not closed) but somebody has to make that argument before we delete the article. Furthermore, the article had survived a previous AFD and 1 !vote is not enough to determine whether or not consensus has changed. --Ron Ritzman (talk) 12:47, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

All biographies of living persons are required to have sources and the article on you had none except a page at the University of Westminster which required a login and password to view. Therefore, I will not restore this version of the article but any logged in editor is free to write a new article on you. I googled this topic and came across the deleted article. I read the entire case for deletion and while I do not agree with your verdict, I respect it nonetheless. However, I must point out one very serious problem. Michitaro speculates that somehow the Buddhakahika, who is probably a Buddhist and possibly a supprter of the project is in some way associated *with* the project. This is unsubstantiated speculation that borders on libel/ slander. Many self help gurus have zealous fans that can create articles and edit them without any official representative even knowing. For eg., if I edit an article about Whitney Houston's death, can one speculate that I am covertly assocated with Ms. Houston? This is rampant speculation and conjecture. Furthermore, Michitaro goes on to suggest that somehow the makers of the film may have used unsavory ways to get publicity. What basis does he have to make such a claim? Every celebrity has a publicist who can "wheel and deal" with the media -- are you know going to delete every article that has been published unless we look at the interaction between a publicist and a reporter? How dare Michitaro suggest that respected publications like those mentioned were hoodwinked into their articles? A Wiki editor's job is to report on articles, not speclate on the journalists who wrote them. Also, many of the articles were very different and to suggest they were all written off the same press release is ridiculous. Furthermore, AP and Reuters also work off press releases FYI and so without press releases, the journalism industry would be dead.

Therefore, it is important for you to amend the archive for as it stands it does suggest an unproven link between the author of an article and its subject and makes various unproven accusations. As a law professor, I know this is libellous and a breach of ethics. Also, FYI, the reason I googled this topic is because I did watch the film and found it to be inspirational myself. But that does not change my stance which is neutral and well advised. You have the right to delete an article but you do not have the right to allow slander/ libel/ innuenndo/ speculation to potentially tarnish the reputation of those about whom the article has been written. This is a very serious precedent that can have legal raminfications and you are free to consult Wiki lawyers to confirm the same. Good faith does not encourage speculative comments such as the ones Michitaro has made about the subjects of the article, regardless of whether or not he feels the author used a sock puppet or had a room-mate/ dorm-mate edit his article.
