SBW speculation

Hello Mattlore. I am not too sure why you reverted my edit for Sonny Bill Williams. To give you the background to the edit, I was the one who initially added the NRL speculation sentence. However, once I read that SBW himself denied the speculation I deleted it since it is untrue. Thanks.Suid-Afrikaanse (talk) 05:08, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

How'd you end up on this page?! :) I reverted it because it was sourced, did the meeting actually happen? If so then it still deserves a mention even if he wont end up there in 2013. Mattlore (talk) 11:21, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

Wrong format for persondata

FYI... You have been adding new rugby players with the wrong date format in PERSONDATA.

For example, in Dave Boughton, you had {{birth date and age|1970|2|27|df=y}} for DATE OF BIRTH. It should be 27 February 1970.

From WP:Persondata: "Do not use templates within these fields, as they can interfere with data extraction. Abraham Lincoln's birthday, for example, should be listed as February 12, 1809 and not as {{birth date|1809|2|12|mf=y}}." Bgwhite (talk) 07:10, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

Cheers. Is there a preference in format or is any format acceptable? Mattlore (talk) 11:18, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
February 27, 1970 or 27 February 1970 are the preferred formats. Use whichever is more appropriate for the article. Bgwhite (talk) 21:31, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

2011 Women's International Rugby Tests

Schwede66 suggested I pass this to you to take a look at - I don't know a lot about Women's rugby but wondered if it would be better to have a title "2011 Women's International Rugby Tests" (I presume there is one called '2011 start of year' or similar that could be amalgamated)?. Whoever created it must have done a lot of work to get all those stats - I take my hat off to them. NealeFamily (talk) 19:18, 13 March 2012 (UTC)NealeFamily (talk) 07:19, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

Albert House and Paddy George

Could you please have a look at the Albert House and Paddy George articles. Also, on Past Kiwis → G at nzrl.co.nz and Past Kiwis → H at nzrl.co.nz, etc. what does, e.g. 1913 (n1) mean? Best Regards. DynamoDegsy (talk) 10:00, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

The key is here. n = NSW and home matches are in lower case so it means he played one game against NSW in NZ in 1913. Mattlore (talk) 21:03, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for your efforts on Albert House and Paddy George, and thanks for the key, I thought 'n' might mean 'New South Wales', but I couldn't figure out what the significance of the lower-case letter was. I have a question on Paddy George, according to Past Kiwis → G at nzrl.co.nz "GEORGE [424] Patrick, Wellington: 2 caps - 1909 (A1), 1913 (n1)" which means he played one away match against Australia in 1909, but his Profile at nzleague.co.nz states "Tests: 0", and rugbyleagueproject.org has no mention of him in Game-1, Game-2, or Game-3 of the Australia vs New Zealand 1909 series. Best Regards. DynamoDegsy (talk) 08:06, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
Hmmm, not too sure - a mistake by nzrl perhaps? Or maybe they don't want to say A0? As far as I know he was on the tour but didn't play in any tests. Mattlore (talk) 09:50, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
I have a "similar" issue with the newly created Roy Siddells article, Past Kiwis → Sat nzrl.co.nz states "SIDDELLS [62] Charles (Roy) G. R., Wellington/Wanganui: 2 caps - 1911 (A), 1913 (n)" meaning he played one away match against Australia in 1911, but his Profile at nzleague.co.nz states "Tests: 0", and rugbyleagueproject.org has no New Zealand test matches in 1911, would either of New South Wales rugby league team or Queensland rugby league team be regarded as de-facto Australia national rugby league team at that time? Are you okay with me creating these New Zealand national rugby league team player stubs, or am I trampling on your turf? Best Regards. DynamoDegsy (talk) 10:08, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
I would go with sources such as nzleague and rugbyleagueproject over Past Kiwis at nzrl. I don't think either would have been a defacto team, perhaps nzrl is trying to say it was a tour of Australia, ie they played both NSW and Qld? Go ahead creating them, I don't mind - although I do appreciate you letting me know so I can check I don't have any additional info to add :) Mattlore (talk) 10:22, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
I've recently created Jim Gilmour, George Bradley, and Robert Irvine, it may be worth keeping an eye on the Articles created by me web page, for all the latest developments. Best Regards. 14:14, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, I appreciate it. I hope you find my contributions worthwhile. I didn't know about the New Articles tool. Mattlore (talk) 03:33, 28 July 2012 (UTC)
I certainly do find your contributions worthwhile, and I've got a question for you regarding the discrepancy between the stated playing positions on nzleague.co.nz and rugbyleagueproject.org of e.g. Stan Dobson (i.e. Centre, and Bench), Henry Knight (rugby league) (i.e. Second-Row, and Hooker & Front Row), and Bill Scott (i.e. Loose Forward, and Front Row & Bench), would either nzleague.co.nz and rugbyleagueproject.org be more reliable, or could both be correct? Also, rugbyleagueproject.org mentions "Bench", but this is in the 1920s, and I didn't think substitues were allowed until the 1960s? Best Regards. DynamoDegsy (talk) 12:18, 2 August 2012 (UTC)

I have a sneaking suspicion that rugbyleagueproject sometimes has its forward pack the wrong way around, ie listing the lock at 8, hooker at 12 etc. I can't prove it, but that would explain some of the forwards who have played every position in the pack. Then again maybe it was just a sign of the times with the contested scrums. Not sure about the bench, good point. I would go for nzleague.co.nz's position as their main one, while rugbyleagueproject attempts to list every position they've ever played. Mattlore (talk) 08:37, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

Well done for spotting Wally Desmond on my homepage. Having toured Great Britain in 1926, he would have been known to English clubs, but Castleford is an unusual club to land at, other than Gordon Innes (whose initial English club was a Wigan), I can't find another New Zealander at Castleford until the modern era. I've checked orl-heritagetrust.org.uk, saints.org.uk, and rugby.widnes.tv (wigan.rlfans.com appears to be down for the forseeable future), and I can't find a Wally Desmond on these websites, so thecastlefordtigers.co.uk is the only website I can find him on, and it doesn't give a field position for the two games he played. I've found the marriage of a Walter L. Desmond to a Norah E. Hill during April→June 1933 in Leeds North district, but there's no guarantee it's the same person. We appear to have a few loose ends, and nothing to tie them together with. As an aside, the Charles James article mentions Nelson rugby league team, but I can't seem to find anything about modern rugby league in Nelson, let alone historical rugby league, is it a rugby union hotbed? Is the Tasman rugby league team based in Nelson? Best Regards. DynamoDegsy (talk) 09:13, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
Tasman is a merger of Nelson-Marlborough, but it is very much rugby union territory. Perhaps I was stretching it a little by linking Charles James to Tasman?
On Desmond, I think I've found the missing link - he played for Leeds, debuting 29 October 1927. For wigan.rlfans perhaps try to see if The Internet Archive can get you what you're looking for. Mattlore (talk) 09:54, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
Whats more, while this isn't a reliable source - it does confirm our story, from NZ, played for Leeds & Castleford and married Norah! Good detective work. Mattlore (talk) 09:58, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
I've updated Wally Desmond to include our findings. If the Tasman rugby league team is a merger of Nelson rugby league team & Marlborough rugby league team, would it be acceptable to use [[Tasman rugby league team|Nelson]] in the Charles James article? Best Regards. DynamoDegsy (talk) 11:15, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
Good idea, Ive added some early history to the Tasman article so it makes the link clearer. Mattlore (talk) 20:40, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

In addition to Charles James, Pat Hannigan, Bert Feary, and Dave Mason, the List of New Zealand Kiwis representatives article also mentions two more Nelson players, i.e. Conrad Byrne and William Mackrell, though these players are not mentioned in Tasman rugby league team article. However, William Mackrel's nzrl.co.nz reference states Nelson, but his nzleague.co.nz reference doesn't state Nelson, it states Auckland. Any thoughts? Best Regards. DynamoDegsy (talk) 10:24, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

Mackrell lived and played in Auckland so I think the reference is a mistake, Byrne was born in Nelson but was playing RU in Wellington when he was selected for the tour. Mattlore (talk) 10:28, 7 August 2012 (UTC)
I've recently started articles for Frank Barclay, Vic Banks, and Con McCarthy. I have a few of questions regarding Frank Barclay… would you know the correct way to show both Māori and English names relative to each other? In the paperspast.natlib.govt.nz webpage it states that Frank and his brother, Glen Barclay/Punga Pakere, were at St John's College, is this St John's College, Auckland? Also, the paperspast.natlib.govt.nz webpage has Hauauru spelt as Hauaura, would you know which is correct? Best Regards DynamoDegsy (talk) 09:48, 11 October 2012 (UTC)
Not too sure about a correct way sorry - I think what you have presented there is fine. I think the spelling is a type, other papers of the time have the spelling of Hauauru. St John's could well be St John's College, Auckland. Mattlore (talk) 08:59, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

Patrick Ah Van Chinese descent

Mattlore, Regarding Patrick being of Chinese descent, I am currently trying to get a list of Chinese eligible players and here is my email from Widnes. They stated his grandfather is Chinese I dont know if this is enough info. Youndbuckerz (talk) 04:02, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi. The emails fail Wikipedia:Verifiability, because they can't be checked (without emailing them again). There might be a way to verify an email like that, I am not sure what the procedures are. Mattlore (talk) 05:10, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

so would I still need a source to add him to New Zealand people of Chinese descent can I just add his grandfather is Chinese and put citation needed? Youndbuckerz (talk) 06:55, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

If you make that edit I won't revert it but I can't speak for others. Ideally you would be able to find a source. Mattlore (talk) 05:24, 29 September 2012 (UTC)
