Thank you[edit]

Thank you very much for making my time in Wikipedia super. I have decided to leave and I don't think I will be back. Thank you again for helping me and making my time in Wikipedia super. Best Regards, ForestH2 t/c 23:26, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

User:Matthvm[edit]

You have blocked this user indefinitely after repeated legal threats and repeated incidents of uncivil behaviour. He sent an e-mail to the unblock list asking to be unblocked and threatening legal action. After reading his talk page, I have rejected his request to send an e-mail requesting an unblock to the list. Capitalistroadster 02:01, 16 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I saw that email, in fact my block was due to an earlier email of his to the list that made me investigate further. Thanks for letting me know you reviewed and rejected the unblock. I think maybe I should take this to WP:AN/I, not sure (I don't block all that often)... what do you think? ++Lar: t/c 03:08, 16 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Surprised[edit]

I'm surprised that you've only gotten one of these in your wiki-career. You deserve far more than one Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar:

The Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar
To Lar, for being a kind administrator, for taking the time to assist other editors, and for doing the little things that make others "time in Wikipedia super" (to quote ForestH2). -- Samir धर्म 02:31, 16 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Raymond Monvoisin nom[edit]

Updated DYK query Did you know? was updated. On July 16th, 2006, a fact from the article Raymond Monvoisin, which you recently nominated, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

Nice one --Cactus.man 16:48, 16 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OOPS - missed that this one had been updated to 3 params too. :-( --Cactus.man 08:20, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
My bad, I should have fixed the instructions when I made them parallel. I just fixed my .js which was good enough for me! (I found out the first one had been changed when my js started giving funny results. The instructions are fixed now. ++Lar: t/c 10:55, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that, although I'm not sure the new 3 param versions of the templates are so good. It just increases the workload, exponentially (3 params instead of 1 - needless complication). Also, while I'm ranting, the new protocol on commenting on passed over noms is just not good IMO. It just clogs up the page with unnecessary commentary, as does the Unused Suggestions section. I think both experiments should be ditched. If nominators want to question the reasons for their articles being passed over, let them come to ask directly as before. If it aint broke, don't fix it... </END RANT> --Cactus.man 19:18, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The three param versions are there because (according to whoever changed them, I forget who but its on the talk of one of them) the older versions were picking up the current date when subst'd or something, instead of the date placed. You can always make a 1 parm version if you wanted to I guess. But the impact to me is completely nil because I just changed my .js to add the extra parms to the invocation when I used them (see User:Lar/DYK/monobook.js for more info... I like that because it also customises the heading line too). As for dumping the two new innovations of commenting and of keeping unused arounds... I agree. Low value add. My time to update is now around an hour or more each time. Maybe all this should be taken up on the WPT:DYK page? ++Lar: t/c 19:25, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
PS I bet I can get the templates to work even if only one parm is given, let me hack (see {{WPBeatles}}, that template does a lot of conditional stuff) ++Lar: t/c 19:26, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hack away my Good Man. I am currently working with 1 param local template versions pending agreement / discussion. You're right about the other matters, my update time has also soared as a result of the "adjustments". This should be brought up on on WPT:DYK as you suggest. I'll draft something soon. --Cactus.man 19:39, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Good article![edit]

I thought you might be interested to know the article we worked on, "Winston tastes good like a cigarette should," has been promoted to good article status after just one day. Thanks for contributing to a job well done! Mike H. I did "That's hot" first! 04:18, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Updated DYK query Did you know? was updated. On 17 July, 2006, a fact from the article Everybody Knows, which you recently nominated, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. Bah. I'm closing the tango debate right now, and I would have liked your eyes on it as soon as I finished. - brenneman {L} 01:40, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
which one, there are two. Are you on IRC? IRCme. ++Lar: t/c 01:47, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I'm struggling with IRC right now. I'm at an internet caf and am to thick to configure the damn thing. - brenneman {L} 01:53, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry mate! just mail me then? anyway I can go look at the debate, it's the one you put the inuse on, ne? Once it's closed, it's closed, ne? Or did you expect a DrV right away or ? I just dunno what you want... ++Lar: t/c 01:56, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have that problem all the time. I just wanted an eyeball on the close from an admin I trust to evaluate it and put his personal feelings aside. But I asked you instead. ^_^
brenneman {L} 02:02, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I see it is now closed. Dude that is the most bizarre close I've ever seen. Yet, it seems right. You are correct, it's not a no consensus close, it's a "messed up discussion and please do this over after you give the article a good try" close. Was that what you wanted? I can expound on this at length in DRV if need be, which I have a feeling is where this is going next. ++Lar: t/c 02:08, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm getting dead sick of DRv recycling. We need a {{DRvProd}} like "This close will almost certianly go to deletion review and be upheld, so let's do interprative dance instead." - brenneman {L} 02:17, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

(outdent) Nod. But how to avoid it?... BTW I suggested delete on that XfD above, the keeps are not very convincing. ++Lar: t/c 02:19, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That template debate discussion is giving me the screaming irits. It's not so much the passionate defence of JJay, although that gets me to, it's the *shrug* *whatever* of the others who appear to fail to even attempt to understand the issues. But I am getting worked up to a rant, so I'll stop now. - brenneman {L} 09:42, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Adminship question[edit]

How long did it take to become an administrator? Legolost 05:06, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Depends on how you measure. I started editing in summer 2005, but seriously for about 5 months or so before accepting a nomination. I had well over 3000 edits. The nomination itself runs 7 days. Hope that helps. Happy editing! ++Lar: t/c 10:51, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

(from MgM's talk where I started) I see you've been working on this (and I cribbed what you did for Template:UpdatedDYKNom) per [1] I think it may have broken all the older usages, if you check what links here and follow a random link you'll see some messes. Let's discuss on WPT:DYK ok? something needs to be done I think. My suggestion would be that if the parms are not present, the whole date is omitted completely (and the template assumes parm 1 is the article name instead of parm 3). This kind of logic is doable with #ifexists and #switch, I know how... but I would prefer to discuss first. Thoughts? ++Lar: t/c 23:41, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I updated it to be similar to UpdatedDYNom, because I often informed users some days after the article actually featured and altering the dates was a lot of work. If you want to renumber so the article is the first parameter, I've got no problems with that. If older articles are broken by the update, they should be subst: with the correct information. This is a subst: type of template. I couldn't find any examples of the template messing up. Can you point to a specific one? - Mgm|(talk) 11:15, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Do a what links here... first one I checked had the problem. I agree it's an improvement but I think changing the order to have the art first would fix things a lot. I may make time to try to make that chnage (if you don't beat me to it) for both of them. Let's stay threaded here ok? ++Lar: t/c 12:23, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

DYK: PR Pisharoty[edit]

Thanks for including the article on DYK. The scan is of a photo which belongs to me. So there was no problem of ownership. But that doesn't matter. Thanks again. - Aksi_great (talk) 11:34, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Were you the photographer? If it's just a photo that you own because it's in a book or whatever, the person who photographed it holds the rights, not you, as I understand it. It's OK to use under fair use, but owning a copy of a copyrighted photo does not give you rights to it, necessarily. Hence my uncertainty, because the writeup on the image wasn't clear on that point, better safe than sorry. It's a great fair use pic for the article though. ++Lar: t/c 12:20, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It was taken by my family at my parents wedding. So technically, I wasn't there. But I did ask my family to release the photo. But as that was 25 years ago no digital version was available. So, I scanned the pic. Hope that makes it clear. - Aksi_great (talk) 12:27, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Loads clearer. You probably should add that level of detail to the image description itself, for if I'd seen it I would have left the article so it could be selected and the pic used, instead of taking it when I already had a pic... Thanks for the additional info and for your efforts on behalf of the encyclopedia! ++Lar: t/c 12:31, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Now I know I should have done that. My mistake. Thanks for taking out the time. Enjoy. - Aksi_great (talk) 12:50, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree and I've explained why in the noms. Whatever poor admin has to do a close for 50 lists (and especially the inbound link cleanup associated with them) is in for a heck of a job, which strikes me as very unfair. So no, this is too big of a lump. I could see doing 5 at a time though which is what I will do for the rest of them.... Viewing deleted content[edit]

Hi! I recently put up a request at Wikipedia:Deletion review/Content review but it seems that no one's gotten to it yet. I was wondering if you would be so kind as to move these articles into my userspace (I'd like to use them for a project I'm working on):

I'm not sure if there are any similarly themed articles around, but those are the ones I know of. If you were to move them for me I'll be happy to remove my old request out of content review. Thanks! Skidde 02:23, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I've reviewed these pages, and some of them have been deleted for some time. Your edit history is scanty, I usually do this for editors in good standing.... Ask me again when you've made some significant contributions to the encyclopedia and I will consider it again. ++Lar: t/c 02:42, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the quick response. As you said, I'm not terribly familiar with the innards of WP (I've used it for a while, but haven't done any editing), so if this request is out-of-line or otherwise improper I apologize. The only thing is that our community is starting a wiki of our own, and in the past I know some of our members have contributed articles (these in particular) to Wikipedia that have been deleted as non-notable and gamecruft. Since these articles were started and (briefly) maintained by our members I thought they would be great to include in our own project, and since Wikipedia has no use for them it seemed that it would be very much in the spirit of a wiki to have the content moved and improved upon. However based on your response it looks like I'll have to see if anyone happened to save those articles before they were deleted. Apologies again. --Skidde 03:08, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Good reasons! You're completely new though so sometimes there's reason to be a bit leery till an editor has established a history, no offense. Just have any of the editors that have more of a history (including having edited some of those articles) ask me here, and I'll be delighted to help you all out... what's the link to your wiki? ++Lar: t/c 03:12, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
At the moment it's nothing special (we haven't officially announced it to our entire community yet, we're trying to lay a bit of a foundation first--hence this request!), but here's the link. Skidde 03:16, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I will vouch for Skidde's intentions here. I don't have much of a history myself -- a few dozen edits over two years! -- but this is hopefully worth at least something :). --NealT 04:17, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Give me a little time to restore them all but I see no reason not to now. ++Lar: t/c 04:42, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. This got recreated and tagged as a speedy again. I have removed the speedy and added a {{notenglish}} because, as far as I can see, being a foreign language article is not a valid criteria for a speedy deletion (unless the content exists on another wiki). Probably is a load of crap, but what do you think? Cheers TigerShark 22:25, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think without evidence of notability or any intelligible content it merits deletion and I would delete it again and warn the user. I'll leave that to you though if you like, I'd rather not revert you inadvertantly. ++Lar: t/c 22:29, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OK. I'll leave it as is, but if you want to delete it please feel free. Cheers TigerShark 22:34, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Indigenous Peoples of North America Portal has been established, as a starting point for those wishing to learn more about the subject, with information and links on a wide variety of issues. It also contains news regarding the continent's various tribes and nations. It's a graphically pleasing site, and everyone is encouraged to check it out.
The project's home page has a new design, featuring tabbed subpages on participants, templates, articles, categories, and the to do list.
The Article Classification lists have been moved to their own subpage due to size. This is a sign of progress in the ongoing work of this project.
The project's talk page template has been updated, along with the classification system, to include the assessment on the talk pages of the articles that have been classified and assessed.
Balance
As the Project reaches its first six months of activity, the great effort all of you have invested in it has turned the vast information available on Indigenous North American topics from a deorganized cumulous into an excellent and easy to consult database. Although much work is still in order, few WikiProjects are able to obtain the amazing results we are proud to show today. To all of you, thank you and congratulations!
The assessment of articles within the scope of the project is still an ongoing process. We need people to help in this who are not contributors to the articles they are assessing. Also, there is the ongoing need for identifying and cataloguing articles that fall within the scope of this project. As of today, nearly 1,500 have been identified within the Project's scope.

Hi Lar,

Thanks for your message, and your feedback on the 'tip' templates! I'm testing them out as per an ongoing discussion to how to increase awareness on proposed deletion and speedy deletions, as it appears that the AfD load for Wikipedians seem too much for them to bear resulting in a spike in relisting. I'm sorry to hear that you didn't find the 'tip' nominator-friendly, and I have taken note of that and will be more careful in future. Any ideas for improvements are also greatly appreciated! :)

Help request for a pair of out-of-process deletions...[edit]

I found your name on Category:User undeletion and was hoping your interest extends to undeleting speedy-deleted pages that were deleted out-of-process (e.g. without consensus). If not, I'd appreciate guidance as to how to proceed with achieving these undeletions.

Wikipedia:Userboxes/Beliefs[edit]

This was deleted per CSD G6 as noncontroversial housekeeping. The page was previously at MfD with no consensus, as well as having been deleted twice before & restored twice before. [2] A discussion of the deletion can be found at {[User talk:1ne#Wikipedia:Userboxes/Beliefs]]. This time around, two admins emptied the page so that the deletion would be houekeeping, then one of them deleted it. There is no resonable way that I can see this deletion as being noncontroversial. All I want is for it to go through process rather than being speedied.

User talk:Ssbohio/B & User talk:Ssbohio/BB[edit]

I previously asked the deleting admin to reconsider (on User talk:Cyde#Subpages of my talkpage:

Please return User talk:Ssbohio/B & User talk:Ssbohio/BB to their condition before being deleted & moved. I hadn't finished my work on B, and BB doesn't belong in its place. Since this entirely concerns my talk page, please direct further discussion there. Thanks. --Ssbohio 00:48, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

When I first discovered Kelly Martin/B, I copied it to a user subpage, Ssbohio/B (history logs). I also created Ssbohio/BB (history logs) to do more work on Kelly Martin's concept of listbuilding. Cyde deleted B and moved BB to B with the comment (Proper naming scheme). Since I can see no naming convention in userspace that the name B is violating, I raised an objection on his talkpage, and Cyde moved B back to BB (where it started), leaving the comment (User wants another name). I asked again on his talkpage that the original B be undeleted. He responded that he wouldn't undelete the page because he didn't like my attitude.

Cyde cites no policy in support of his action. Can you restore these pages as they were before Cyde tinkered with them? If not, what am I supposed to do? The deleting admin has refused all attempts at compromise or resolution. I've been able to recreate the content of the B page, but because of the deletion, the history, including Cyde's involvement, remains hidden.

So, can you help?[edit]

I can't see policy supporting either of these deletions, but I'm not saying that they definitely shouldn't be deleted. They don't meet criteria for deletion at sight under CSD, so I'd like them restored, and anyone who still wants them deleted can use the MfD process to do it. Thanks in advance for your assistance. --Ssbohio 14:30, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

my reply[edit]

I will be happy to userify the userbox to your userspace. But I will not undelete it back to where it was. Your best bet is to take it through WP:DRV if you feel strongly about it. However I support WP:GUS and think userboxes need to go away from template space. As to the lists, again, DRV is probably the best channel, as they were already in your userspace. Sorry if that's not very helpful. ++Lar: t/c 14:53, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's not that I'm upset with your decision, but the situation with my user subpages frustrates me greatly, and it's difficult to understand this situation. Whether the userbox list deletion was out of process is a debatable point, but the deletion of a subpage from my userpage, with edit summaries that at best obscure what's being done, is a clear process violation. I've had the information from the deleted userpage given to me anonymously by an admin who didn't want to run afoul of Cyde, but I don't understand how a deletion entirely outside of process can be ok. Could you imagine the howls of protest if I deleted one of Cyde's userpages? (Not that I would, WP:POINT & all) It's one of those situations where I thought I knew the structure & rules of the community and now I'm just very disappointed. Along with there being no cabal, there's also no Santa Claus.  :-) --Ssbohio 19:37, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I understand your frustration and I sympathise. But, user pages aren't a place to keep anything you want to keep though (take a look at the disclaimer at the top of this page in lavender)... I really think taking it to DRV is the best way to go. I won't wheel war with another admin by undeleting out of process even if I think the deletion was out of process too, because I try to avoid wheel wars. The thing to ask yourself is this, how was it helping the encylopedia to have this information around? If you can construct a good answer to that you should take it to DRV, if you can't you should let go and write some good articles instead. I hope that helps, I'm sorry if it does not. Happy editing in any case. ++Lar: t/c 19:50, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
First, I want to thank you for taking the time to hear me out and give me some actual feedback. The deleting admins didn't appear willing to dialogue on either of these. As far as the limitation on what can be kept in userspace, I see what you mean. One thing to consider is that Cyde made the deletion ostensibly to enforce a proper naming scheme (whatever that is), not to limit what's in my userspace & that Cyde never cited any problem with the content itself. I also want to clarify that, as I understand it, undeletion policy explicitly makes the undeletion of out-of-process deletions fall within policy. However, it says an administrator "may," so I have no place insisting. I point it out only because it seems to say something different than the policy understanding I got from your comment above. As for how the page helps the encyclopedia, I'll point out that the same page(s) were not considered deletable by MfD when in Kelly Martin's userspace. In more detail, I'll say that in general, better quality is achieved when scrutiny is applied. Keeping track of questionable votes seems worthwhile, as Kelly Martin explained it. When repeated problems are discovered within a small base of users, listing them & periodically checking on what they're doing seems not only allowable, but prudent. However, I see the other side, too. Kelly Martin didn't seem to do anything but sew disruption with her list. In any regard, I'll consider taking this through the formal process, though I strongly feel that I shouldn't have to show that my subpage should be undeleted when there was no policy basis for deleting them it in the first place. Thanks again. --Ssbohio 21:36, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well of course "so and so did X so I get to do X too" isn't usually a valid reason but if you took this set of pages to DRV, and cited the arguments made in Kelly's MfD, some consistency is reasonable to expect I guess... again it may not seem fair that you have to do the work of putting it up for DrV, but that's the best I can offer, I won't wheel war. ++Lar: t/c 21:45, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yogh[edit]

Umm, so are you going to indef block the reincarnation of Maggie, or would you rather I do it? As Bishonen says, a really obvious sockpuppet doesn't need a check user. If you're uncomfortable without the checkuser, though, we can do that. Geogre 20:06, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I would rather you did it, and I'll imnediately support at AN/I if you like. I am involved in Phaedriel's RFA a bit too much (where this sock is one of the only opposers) I think... best if an an univolved admin did it (you haven't even commented yet or at most just commented, I'm a big supporter and co nom)... if you don't mind anyway. Thanks man, I'd owe you one. Maybe I'm all wet dunno. ++Lar: t/c
Damn it, why didn't anyone tell me she was up for RFA? Shoot, I've got to go support! Geogre 20:37, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think your homies let you down, man... at least one of them did already. so'd you block yet? (goes off and checks.. seems not..) ++Lar: t/c 20:41, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Her RfA was touch-and-go until Geogre voted. If he'd do a better job of stalking me we could avoid these problems. —Bunchofgrapes (talk) 21:56, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I know. I had to go tip the balance. (The lady has been quite nice to me, in addition to showing brains and enough courage to fight it out with some of the nastiest piles of silica on the site, so I don't care if I did get in at #185 or whatever.) Lar, Lingeron is now indefinitely blocked, so it's appropriate to strikethrough any comments she made on the RFA, if you choose, or to simply note it. No checkuser was done, so there isn't proof as conclusively as to strike, perhaps. It's your judgment call. Geogre 22:11, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
thanks, I'll go do that. If it is it up on AN/I, I'll support the block. So can we expect the rest of bish's posse to come trooping in too? I know it'd make P's day... not that I'm pimping for votes mind you... ++Lar: t/c 22:13, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Lar, please, let's get it straight: Bishonen is part of my posse, not the other way around. I am unclubbable -- and many have tried. Geogre 01:34, 30 July 2006 (UTC) (It comes of having a chitinous skull.)[reply]

K, THX! I'll keep that in mind, but I bet that when I go to the Queen B I'm going to get a different story... but that's a side issue... go forth and votestack! ++Lar: t/c 01:41, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your questions on RFA[edit]

You asked an interesting series of questions on my RFA. I've provided my thoughts. — ERcheck (talk) 05:36, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Glad you liked them, and thanks for your thoughtful answers. Your note was a reminder that I'd neglected to comment on your candidacy, for which I apologise! I've rectified that, although it looks like snow to me. All best wishes. ++Lar: t/c 10:20, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the offer :)[edit]

I appreciate your willingness to help test and find new features for WikiVoter (WV). Of course I am willing to let you test!

  1. if AWB will work, my program should work as well.
  2. WV will check that you are eligable when you start the program. (no moderators) :)
  3. What you do need to do is put {{user WikiVoter}} on your userpage. (or you can just put the category Category:Wikipedians using WikiVoter on your user page. either will do. (the program checks for this... similar to a signup list... just so I and admins know who is using this. (also makes WP:SOCK violations harder).
  4. Find me on IRC. I need you to send an e-mail to a e-mail address (so I can send you the program--- the e-mail is different from my e-mail for wikipedia) IRC nick is Eagle_101.

That should be all, once I get a stable version I will put it up for anyone to download! Have fun picking up the pieces when the program blows up! (attempt at a joke here!). Cheers! —— Eagle (ask me for help) 20:39, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

(look on my talk page, I will copy-paste this to my talk page to keep it togather) —— Eagle (ask me for help) 20:41, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A DYK comment/inquiry/suggestion[edit]

Lar, I noticed that you are an active admin on DYK. Would you please consider my question/suggestion on the recent Boy Scout nomination? I've put it on the DYK talk page. Thanks. — ERcheck (talk) 21:54, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Will you be making the next update? See my response on the talk page. — ERcheck (talk) 23:35, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Probably not, pretty busy, unf. ++Lar: t/c 23:36, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wickethewok's RFA[edit]

Thanks for your support on my RFA. The final vote count was (61/9/3), so I am now an administrator. Thanks for giving the benefit of the doubt and I'll do my best for you and Wikipedia. Feel free to let me know how I'm doing at any point in time or if you need anything. Once again, thank you. Wickethewok 16:27, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
