Wiki guides

Hello Jane. Welcome to Wikipedia. As part of the current WikiGuides trial program, I've been given a list of 10 new editors to contact and offer to assist. Wikipedia can be frustrating to start out with, and there are a ton of long policy documents, technical discussion, and such that can be alienating. That said, a lot of the basics aren't too bad, and a lot of the bumps are easier with someone to help you roll with them. That would be me, Buster7. 1. - The (@ Jane) thing I did at the beginning of this edit is useful when you get into conversations with more than one editor. It prevents confusion as to who you are replying to.

I want to make a new subcategory of "Jewish composers and songwriters" called "Jewish composers and songwriters in Europe" (as opposed to a currently existing subcategory called "Jewish American composers and songwriters." How do I do it? Thanks. Jane Peppler (talk) 19:10, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

Categories

I've created Category:Polish cabaret performers (it is the first nationality-based cabaret performers category :) ). Please try to add people-based categories to people articles (people should not be in categories such as cabaret of film, but film actors, cabaret performers and so on), for obvious reasons. Please try to add interwikis, deafultsort, proper categories, page assessment templates and such. I see your point. However, Category:Polish cabarets should be for cabarets (organizations). People should be in the people categories. If they are not performers, we have other cats for them: Category:Cabaret composers, for example. Many may be missing, be bold and create proper categories. We could also take a shortcut and create a more generic category, such as "People associated with cabaret", although I am not very fond of that method. Bottom line, cabarets are notable institutions (much more then buildings...) that should not be confused with people. People of cabaret should be a subcategory to the cabaret itself (just like, for example, we have categories for universities, and then categories for their faculty and alumni...). I hope this helps. PS. I wouldn't be surprised if you needed to create "Jewish cabaret performers" category to accompany my Polish one, too. In the end, category creation is part of Wikipedia creation (and information categorization), too. flummoxed (as usual) - this time, by disambiguation

Hi, I've worked on a Polish composer Dawid_Beigelman There are many spellings of his name (more, even, than I put in the article) and several end up pointed to David Begelman Argh. I don't think I am up to figuring this out....

I'd love to help but you should tell us, what exactly your question is here. Restore {{helpme}} with a question and I or someone else will be happy to answer it. It's a good general rule that, if you want to know about something on Wikipedia, it's worth typing its name in the search box preceded by "WP:" or by "Help:" - in this case Help:Disambiguation will give you an overview, and WP:Disambiguation the full works. JohnCD (talk) 19:10, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

Zina Goldstein

Please make your articles comply with the standard Wikipedia opening line: "XXX (dates) is/was a (nationality) (occupation)." The opening line is very important as it's what people see in various search systems. The article at present starts with "Born 1894 in Minsk, White Russia, Zina moved to Warsaw with her parents.": so who was Zina, why has she got a Wikipedia article, etc? Couple of points

Hi Jane,

• Apropos of Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)#Can_the_names_of_referenced_policy_pages_be_expanded_when_cited.3F, have you done this: Go to "My preferences" (top right), click on "Gadgets", "Browing Gadgets", and tick "Navigation popups". Then if you move your mouse over a link such as WP:CSD, it will show you where that abbreviation redirects to. Not much help if the abbreviation isn't a link, but might be useful.

• I had a look at Nellie Casman. Good to see that it starts with a proper sentence, thanks. But please remember to format links properly to avoid "WP:LINKROT" - ie give enough information so that the article can be retrieved again even if the web link doesn't work, especially for somethingn like the NYT obituary which has a definite off-web existence. Also, please remember that Wikipedia is not an American encyclopedia, so it's inappropriate to say someone "came" to the USA. Thanks, and happy editing, and I hope I'm not "discouraging" you again.

Would you be interested in doing Wikipedia outreach on Campus?

Hello, I noticed that you are an academic at Duke and that you have been creating excellent content, and my want to participate in our outreach program for campuses called the Wikipedia Ambassador Program. We will be looking for more WP:Campus Ambassadors to train in the United States for Fall 2011, and I think you would make an excellent candidate to participate. Campus Ambassadors are trained primarily to support Wikipedia Teaching assignments at Universities, but that same skills training is useful in doing general outreach such as faculty presentations and workshops for Teaching technologists and librarians. We were initially attached to the Public Policy Initiative, however, we plan to branch out in to many other topic areas for the fall. Use of YouTube as a source

Hi, I notice that you frequently cite YouTube as a source in your articles. You are probably unaware that YouTube is not considered a reliable source. Personally I did not revert any of your work, I do not have doubts that it is truth, it's just that Wikipedia has some policies which are difficult to always follow to the letter.
