Very belatedly, thanks for looking through the article on Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky while it was undergoing peer review. Per comments received there, the article in general, and especially the section where Tchaikovsky's homosexuality is mentioned, has been thoroughly overhauled. I would really appreciate if you could look over that section once more just to make sure all bases are covered and get back to me on my talk page with any suggestions. Thanks very much! Boogie Woogie

I see that you participated in the creation of this article, although quite a while ago. I also note that you are making many edits to music related topics. As a non musician (or wanna be, maybe) I find it confusing that the "bass line" image doesn't seem to be the familiar I IV V of blues. This after the article states that this is the basis for "boogie woogie".

Cellist = Wikipedians by skill or profession. Let's sidestep the obvious jokes/puns about skill/profession in relation to sexuality. ("The world's oldest profession" for example.)

Also, when I said "feel-good", I meant in terms of a category that is intended only for grouping for the sake of grouping, with no navigation intended except for social or pseudo-demographic reasons (pseduo-demographic because: a.) self-placement may be of dubious precision b.) not all of a demographic may categorise themselves in tah manner). This is part of why there should be accuracy in naming, and why we tend to follow an convention of naming within parent categories (such as Wikipedians by interest).

My difficulty is in verifying the conventions which you cite and placing them in context. Thus my questions which appear to be "other stuff exists" arguments, in which I am attempting to document the practice and policy around this issue. If you read over WP:AGF, you may find that what it says is:

• This guideline does not require that editors continue to assume good faith in the presence of evidence to the contrary.

In my opinion, you made your POV rather clear in the Village Pump "discussion". Which also meant that you were being a bit less than truthful about your motives during the DRV. That said, I did what I could to be honest, yet attempt to keep the discussion positive. There were enough people who were "going negative", in their POV pushing (using such words as "slaughter", for example).

You may also wish to read over the essay Wikipedia:Don't be a fanatic (which is also linked at WP:AGF). You may find it helpful for the future.

In any case, there have been times in the past where, in hindsight, I wondered if perhaps I should have more carefully considered my "tone". I don't believe that this is one of those cases. If anything, it may be possible that I was too positive and polite in the face of probable deceit. But then, I'm a big fan of WP:AGF, and tend to err on the side of caution. I didn't oppose the nomination. I closed it due to obvious WP:POINT issues. At the moment, I don't see how that has changed.

If I might offer a suggestion, instead of feeling sour grapes, or presuming that you are being prosecuted unfairly, or that a double standard is in place, or whatever else it is that you may be feeling, instead, presume good faith of your fellow Wikipedians, and join in on the existing discussions at WP:UCFD. Though not everyone agrees in every instance, and there is no guarantee that one's opinion will be similar to what consensus is determined to be, everyone's opinion is welcome, and I think it could be a valuable learning experience, if you're truly interested in Wikipedian categories.

If you're not interested in Wikipedian categories in general, and are just upset about the "loss" of your preferred wording of a category name, then I'm sorry, but then I don't think that there would be anything further to discuss, except a suggestion to just "let it go", and move on.

Another editor has added the "{{prod}}" template to the article Swish (slang), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. I've deleted the category. A guideline not getting consensus does not overrule deletion review decisions, it will have to be allowed to be recreated at DRV before it can be created again (which I doubt will happen anytime soon, considering there have been 3 deletion reviews all resulting in endorse). You are free to take it there again, however, and I will support recreating the category if consensus is to allow recreation at DRV. So I came here from Duchenne smile (long story how I got there) and noted it has no references or anything, and that you were the person who started the page. I think the responsibility is really on the person who creates a page to provide references really. It was a long, long time ago now, but can you please try to rectify the situation? Thanks. Isn't it clear? I'm asking you to provide references. How do I know you didn't just make this stuff up? Wikipedia is built around the idea of references. If we don't cite sources, we have virtually no credibility (and we do have very little credibility, primarily because we don't provide references in most of our articles!)

Look, I'm sorry I got the wrong person; you should have just told me you only created a redirect from the beginning. But you need to stop all this bullshit about references. It's not for other people to go cleaning up after those who create poor articles with no references, they should do this themselves. It's the same with images not being uploaded to Commons; I don't just follow people around cleaning up after them over and over, I tell them what they are doing wrong in the hope that they will do it right. Your assertion that I could have fixed the problem in a few minutes (and I did do a quick web search for a reference, not that it was in any way my responsibility to do so) overlooks the whole point of why I tell people this stuff.

And stop with the sillyness about the reference being no better (or marginally better, or whatever the hell you are trying to say) than nothing. You could also say that even if I verified it I still wouldn't know it was true because it could have been a hoax, or a mistake etc. And even if it wasn't, you could resort to some relativistic postmodernistic twaffle. All we can do is cite references here; we can't verify them for everyone as well. People have to do that themselves if they want to be 100% sure, and we both know it, or at least I hope we do. It's pretty clear that I could make up a similar article to the former 'Duchenne smile' that sounded believable to most readers without specialist knowledge in that area or an encyclopedic knowledge of everything, yet that was completely fictitious. I think it's very hard to make a case that an article with no references can be okay, and your attempts to have certainly not convinced me in the least. I wrote a long explanation of why I removed your quibble tag about Link Wray's invention of the power chord, but before posting it, I went to look at your contributions list to see what kind of editing you do (mostly serious music) and what do I find but your own contribution to Link Wray today:

That is, your own edit, earlier today, states that Link Wray "invented" (unqualified in any way) the power chord and citing a source for the statement! Did I do anything after posting a question on the talk page for James K. Polk?

Up above on this page, you state that unsigned messages can't be returned/traced. If that's true, how did you trace my unsigned entries? Is there a way for me to trace entries I may have made but forgot to sign?

I'm contacting you because of a certain user who's been slyly unLGBTing several key LGBT-related articles. The edits strike major parts of articles plus they're almost always deletions under the guise of formating, style, consistency, etc. In fact, the most blatant one was with the Gay article. Given your interests and your role as an administrator, I think you would know what to do. Template:Listen instead of Template:Audio?

Hi Hyacinth, I hesitate to say this, because I've noticed how much work you've done with audio samples, but perhaps Template:Listen might be more useful than Template:Audio? To listen to Template:Audio, I have to download the .ogg and open my audio editor to listen to it, and sadly not all OSes support it out of the box. The major annoyance is size of the template, which is easily fscked by being placed in small frames (i.e., in image captions). One of your uploads, "Just perfect fourth", sounds a lot more like an "Equal-tempered major third" instead. The reason appears to be in your Comment:

"Created in Sibelius 5. A M3 with midi pitch bend on 48,63 for 398.046875 cents."

I'm sure you intended this to be 498.046875 cents instead, but as a result a substitution is necessary. I've temporarily linked the Equal-tempered "Perfect fourth" (500 cents) instead. Half-diminished scale/Tchaikovsky

Hi, Hyacinth,

Long time, no talk! Thank you for your recent musically notated addition to the stub on the "half-diminished scale". I rewrote this one about a year ago (the original was a disaster!). I didn't spend very much time on it...other articles seemed more important (such as Musical Notation) at the time. But at least my work resulted in the removal of the tag, "This Article Needs Wikifying" (or something to that effect). Thanks to your musically notated example, a musically literate viewer can now understand the scale in terms of tones and semitones, and HEAR it on their pianos! (Maybe we should include an audio file, which I'd be happy to contribute.)

I've been too busy with the "real world" of performances to contribute much to Wikipedia for the past while, but hope to resume serious work very soon.

Thanks, also for your work on Tchaikovsky's homosexuality. (I am a STRONG supporter of gay rights!!!) It seems to me that we should recognize that the world has come a long way on this issue: the MAJORITY of Americans now support gay marriage (led, apparently, by Canada, many years after the fact). There's really no need for another Stonewall...there will ALWAYS be some homophobics, just as the KKK still exists.

I KNOW this is not a chat line, but I MUST confess my dedication to Obama! A vote for a third party is a wasted vote. McCain is as homophobic as ever (but I bet he's had a taste of it!). Obama seems sincere in his support of gay rights/pride. Probably the only reason he doesn't have a stronger lead is because is black, and many Americans still discriminate against African-Americans. Cultural progress moves slowly, but it does move!

Moment/Momente/Moment form

I notice you have just changed or created a redirect of "Moment (Stockhausen)" from "Moment form" to [[Momente], with a note "Form indicates topic while (Stockhausen) did not distinguish between piece and technique". I'm not sure what you mean by this, but the article Moment form makes it very clear that Stockhausen did indeed distinguish the concept (not a technique) of a "moment"—which he used in reference to many compositions from Gesang der Jünglinge and Kontakte (1956 and 1960, respectively) down to Freude for two harps (2005)—from the composition titled Momente. The problem is that there are a number of redirects in other articles designed to help readers understand the concept of a "moment", which now point to the article on the composition Momente, which does not offer the expected explanation. Unspecified time signatures

Do you seriously believe that the works in that list do not specify time signature at all? The only example I have in mind is some of Messiaen's works, which have neither a time signature nor barlines, but that is only because the meter changes too frequently and non-periodically. Chord-scale system

First of all, I really applaud you for having created this article. Where do you get access to all these books? Are these ebooks you have on your HD or...?
In any case, sorry to have reverted you but this chord really doesn't exist. I will most likely install Sibelius/Finale in the near future so I can fix instead of deleting.

I'm no expert on music theory --The last time I studied music theory was in the 1970s -- but it seems to me that you are both correct, as Antandrus remarked on Hearfourmewesigue's talk page. I don't see what I can do, and things look like they have calmed down a bit. I hope you can both work this out and come up with language that is acceptable to both of you, and explains things well for a novice. I am constantly amazed by the arguments I see on Wikipedia in which both sides have good points and rather than combine them, they fight over which is more correct. I recall a very heated one about Roman Polanski arguing about whether he was a Polish filmmaker or a French one. Hi, Thanks a lot for the citing. A reply here to prevent reverting:) It says exactly what I thought. The septimal minor third is inbetween fret 2 and 3, not inbetween 7/6 and 6/5. It is on 7/6 in fact. You can hear the tone together with the seventh harmonic by sticking a screwdriver inbetween the strings and the fretboard on that area on an electric guitar. If you move the screwdriver from the 3rd to the 2nd fret and struck the string at the short side you hear a bright multiphonic tone appearing at some point. That's the 7/6 position. The clock/bell sound you hear is (if A is 440) 3080 Hz + 513,33 Hz. You hear the seventh harmonic (which is the sixth overtone) together with the septimal minor third. Can you follow my description? Sorry, but I reverted again. You don't understand what I'm saying. frets are derived from harmonics. But Western frets are deviated mathmatical fret positions, so the harmonic relationship has disappeared. If you are interested this is a clarification about the relation between harmonics and the fretboard.

I actually found "Hyacinth" going through a used book store -- it's in a book of Millay poems called The Harp Weaver, and Other Poems for which she won the Pulitzer Prize. She is so wonderful! And, incidentally, she was bisexual, so maybe she picked that particular flower for its mythological connotations as well. After all, the hyacinth in this poem is the man's obsession, not the poet's...

At any rate, I found it very inspiring and wrote a song using its text, so when I saw your username somewhere I couldn't help but send the poem to you. :)

I was hoping to ask that you might check your reference for Hungarian Gypsy Scale because I have two references to a different scale, an Aeolian #4, taking this name. My references are from the "Guitar Grimoire" by Adam Kadmos and "Monster Scales and Modes" by Dave Celentano. I am aware that nomenclature is pretty arbitrary and that a "my reference is better than yours" dispute would be pretty silly so I have altered the page to mention this ambiguity in the meantime. I hope that this will not offend you.

"tresillo" in clave page

Hi, I disagree with your counting scheme in the depiction of tresillo in divisive structure. The proper representation in standard notation would be using the 2/4 time signature. I think you changed my counting scheme because all clave examples on the page are written as two measures of 4/4. Next week I'll generate some examples showing clave in a single measure. Notice that the standard pattern example you put up on the "bell pattern' page shows the figure in a single measure. In contrast, the "campana" part you put up on the bell pattern page is in two measures. This issue of whether to depict clave and related patterns in a single measure or two measures should probably be addressed. I'll be gone this weekend, but hope to address this issue early next week.

"Valves too large"

The following has been added today by Hyacinth:

Note that since valves lower the pitch, a valve which causes a pitch to be too low (flat) must itself be too large (sharp), while a valve which causes sharp pitches must itself be to small (flat).

I don't think this adds much and is even confusing, i.e., the valves aren't "too large", the tubing is "too long". But it's not really "too long", it's off in intonation but "working as designed" to make the combination of valves and and slides as easy to use as possible under the imperfect circumstances of the valved brass system.

help with some intervals?

Hi, I am currently working on the logarithm article (in maths). I'm trying to get a nice list of musical interval sound samples (octave, tritone, minor third, semitone, perhaps quarter-tone and cent) and I came across your File:Cent_on_C.mid which sounds very nice (even though I can't hear a difference :). My question: would you be willing to help me out by creating a sound file for each of the above-mentioned intervals (going up, piano sound or something nice (i.e., no beep), all starting with the same lower tone)? I'm aware that there is some work by SoundOfNumbers (e.g. File:One_Cent_Interval.ogg), but that does not cover all these intervals, plus they sound kind of ugly (to me). Thanks a lot! Small undecimal comma

Hi, I edited the table in Comma (music), and now the small undecimal comma is the only one which does not have a definition, while other commas have up to three equivalent definitions. Tuplet article - counting

Hello,

Just raising your attention to the fact that in the article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuplet

... there is an explanatory image which may have a flaw in its design http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Tuplet_counting_subdivide.png

I.E. The top stave has a single triplet figure over the whole bar, as is the lower staff; but it appears from the corresponding discussion it should illustrate the comparison of THREE quaver-triplets to ONE crotchet-triplet.

So top stave was apparently meant to have THREE triplet figures ...

hope I made sense and that this comment may be of some use (well if you don't think it's worth the bother editing / replacing the image anyway that's fair enough - hope I didn't trouble you pointing out such a minute detail ... )

Leadpipe

Saw that you created that article - probably a good addition. I'd remove the picture of the mouthpieces, though - it's confusing, especially in an article about a relatively unfamiliar item like a brass instrument leadpipe. License to tremolo

You uploaded a series of 4 images related to tremolo in July 2009 and I don't quite understand how they can have the templates {{GFDL-self}} and {{Non-free fair use in}} – these seem to contradict each other. I've also mentioned this on each file's tak page. These are the images:

The major intervals may also be altered so as to become diminished (reduced by the necessary equivalent of 2 flats) or augmented (attenuated by the necessary equivalent of 1 sharp). The necessary equivalent can vary depending on the key signature, that is, one may not actually see a flat in the resultant alteration. The necessary equivalent can also vary with respect to the treatment of melody and harmony, i.e., a descending melody of B to Bb to Bbb can be written B - Bb - A, even though the harmony on the A is a diminished 7th chord built on C.

Overall, it is best to teach the perfect intervals first, as they are earlier reflections in the overtone series. Hi Hyacinth... Sonata Form Question

I just visited the bloody battlefield of the Sonata form page. I couldn't read the whole thing as every few paragraphs I'd find myself standing up, blurting an obscenity and pace for ten minutes before continuing. All I managed to do was remove one snippet of stupidity and then resigned from the field. What I'm surprised at is the subject: Sonata form is not a really difficult, tangled and obscure subject. It isn't very political and there's no money attached to it. So why these difficulties with this page?

Facebook Images

I noticed that Facebook utilizes Wikipedia images. The first image on the top of an article will show up on a FB "Page" or as a pop-up thumbnail/icon at a link. I also noticed that when an image is added to an article, it doesn't show up on FB right away. Are the delays because the image needs some kind of approval? If a FB "Page" has a title that is redirected to another Wikipedia title, will the image (from the article you are redirected to) show up on FB (seems to) ... and, if not, can an image be placed on the redirect that will? While the two are related, "phrasing" relates to the art of shaping music during a performance. The numerous quotes are not there to be shoved into wikiquote (you failed to complete this task anyway), but were selected to highlight diverse important aspects of phrasing, and thus need to be an integral part of the article. As the author of the "musical phrasing" article, I feel the concepts are interesting and disjoint enough, to be kept in separate articles. Waiting sincerely for your nod of approval. Commas in figures

Hi Hyacinth,

you are doing a great job with your figures and audio files. However, if possible, would you mind to show commas as they are, rather than added up to an octave?

Notice that the audio files correctly play commas, not intervals formed by octave+comma. And I sincerily do not understand the reason why an article about a comma should show a comma plus an octave. I am sure you have a good reason, and that you can explain it, but I guess most readers cannot understand without an explanation. You might explain your choice in the articles, but I guess it is much better to keep them as simple as possible.

For instance, in the intro of semitone there are two pictures which correctly show semitones, rather than semitones plus octaves. Even when the two notes share the same staff position. I think this is the clearest approach.

By the way, do you know whether "major and minor (or smaller and larger) apotome" is used in just intonation for diatonic semitones?.

I will explain more accurately: I am the author of these two images. They are drawn in scale, meaning that you can compare the sizes of the two commas, semitones and tones. So, I set a width, for each of them, equal to exactly 50% the full original image width (I chose the font size of the labels, in the original image, to make them well readable when reduced to 50% original size).

WP:IMGSIZE gives an advice, (it says "should generally be"). This is a specific case, in which it is advisable in my opinion to publish an image about 25% larger than the maximum suggested by WP:IMGSIZE.

Anyway, my main point is that, whatever is their size, the two pictures cannot have the same width, as they are drawn in scale.

I designed these pictures to be read at 50% their original size, and even their caption is written so that it fills no more than 3 rows when they have 50% width.
