Homosexuality section in Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Very belatedly, thanks for looking through the article on Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky while it was undergoing peer review. Per comments received there, the article in general, and especially the section where Tchaikovsky's homosexuality is mentioned, has been thoroughly overhauled. I would really appreciate if you could look over that section once more just to make sure all bases are covered and get back to me on my talk page with any suggestions. Thanks very much! Jonyungk (talk) 18:44, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for looking through the article and making the layout adjustments that you did. However, I'd hoped you would comment on the current content, especially about areas that had been previously contested. You'd had some definite views previously and mention on your user page that you like to solve problems. All this made not hearing anything from you all the more disconcerting. I am very disappointed but still appreciate your having looked through the article one more time. Jonyungk (talk) 23:47, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

I'm editing WP:Credentials to be an information page, so that users can know that Wikipedia has no credential policy. It isn't quite clear from the rest of the policy and guidelines. See this discussion. Zenwhat (talk) 00:45, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of Elektra chord

A tag has been placed on Elektra chord requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding hangon to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Evan Seeds (talk)(contrib.) 04:33, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi Hyacinth -- as I'm sure you noticed I declined the speedy. Evan, it's best to give someone writing an article just a bit of a chance to write it before slapping the speedy tag on, especially with an obviously experienced contributor who knows how to reference and cite. Hyacinth, nice work; it's a significant topic in post-tonal theory, as I'm sure you know. Happy editing, Antandrus (talk) 04:56, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Could you give the date and place of publication for the reference you added please? I can't find it on Google Books, and Amazon only has Virgil Thomson, not The Autobiography of Virgil Thomson, though it seems like it's the same book.Zigzig20s (talk) 18:28, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for replying on the talkpage but I'm confused. Is the quote taken from the book you mentioned at first, or from the article from the New York Review of Books? For the article I only get a preview and then they ask me to sign in and pay. I've asked my campus library if I can read it for free through them, but anyway...book or article?Zigzig20s (talk) 20:36, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

I see that you participated in the creation of this article, although quite a while ago. I also note that you are making many edits to music related topics. As a non musician (or wanna be, maybe) I find it confusing that the "bass line" image doesn't seem to be the familiar I IV V of blues. This after the article states that this is the basis for "boogie woogie".

Any thoughts on making things more clear? Steve Pastor (talk) 18:41, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

The second illustration in the article, the one after there is talk about boogie woogie being based on 12 bar blues, does not seem to be showing a typical blues I IV V progression. No? And if I have to ask thins, wouldn't there be a better example? Steve Pastor (talk) 20:08, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Category: Queer Wikipedians

A discussion is going on that concerns you.

Recently, the category Queer Wikipedians was deleted, and all pages were removed from the category. I see that you have added yourself back into the now-deleted category, thus re-creating it.

This has created quite a stir over at WP:Village pump (policy)#Categorizing_in_a_deleted_category. (the deletion discussions may be found at WP:User categories for discussion/Archive/October 2007#Category:LGBT_Wikipedians and WP:User categories for discussion/Archive/October 2007#Sexuality_and_gender_identification)

Unless I'm mistaken, no one has spoken to you about the issue, and it seems like your input may be helpful. superlusertc 2008 January 08, 06:59 (UTC)

Deletion review

I'd like to encourage you to view my response at Wikipedia:Village_pump_(policy)#Categorizing_in_a_deleted_category and then amend your deletion review to include all of the categories that were slaughtered. -- ALLSTARecho 09:08, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2008 January 8#Category:Queer Wikipedians

Thank you for your polite reply. Hyacinth (talk) 12:24, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Okay then: How does Category:Wikipedian cellists facilitate collaboration while Category:Queer Wikipedians only feels good? Hyacinth (talk) 23:02, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Cellist = Wikipedians by skill or profession. Let's sidestep the obvious jokes/puns about skill/profession in relation to sexuality. ("The world's oldest profession" for example.)
Also, when I said "feel-good", I meant in terms of a category that is intended only for grouping for the sake of grouping, with no navigation intended except for social or pseudo-demographic reasons (pseduo-demographic because: a.) self-placement may be of dubious precision b.) not all of a demographic may categorise themselves in tah manner). This is part of why there should be accuracy in naming, and why we tend to follow an convention of naming within parent categories (such as Wikipedians by interest).
I hope this clarifies. - jc37 02:38, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

My difficulty is in verifying the conventions which you cite and placing them in context. Thus my questions which appear to be "other stuff exists" arguments, in which I am attempting to document the practice and policy around this issue. We both agree that the decision to name or delete user categories should not be arbitrarily decided. It is my hope that we accomplish this documentation to assist with the process of naming and deleting categories. Hyacinth (talk) 05:11, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

The current naming "conventions" should be obvious just by looking at Category:Wikipedians by interest. Notice that all the subcategories follow the format of: Category:Wikipedians interested in.... That is the convention. - jc37 11:45, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
So the convention for naming user categories is the existence of Category:Wikipedians by interest? What about the other user categories? Hyacinth (talk) 22:15, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

If the Category:Queer Wikipedians was not yet deleted what would you propose an alternate but similar category to accomplish the goal of collaboration? Hyacinth (talk) 05:11, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

I have already done so (several times): Category:Wikipedians interested in LGBT issues. - jc37 11:45, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

How may we verify how categories are actually being used for collaboration? Hyacinth (talk) 05:13, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

The goal is clear potential for collaboration. To reduce bureaucratic overhead, this is typically done in categories by virtue of the category's name. - jc37 11:45, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

How does a categories name clearly indicate the potential for collaboration? Hyacinth (talk) 13:54, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

By showing more direct interest in a topic rather than indirect. Being "x" doesn't necessarily mean that one is interested in collaborating on "x". That's why such categories as "Female Wikipedians" (and in this case, "Queer Wikipedians") have been deleted. - jc37 21:26, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

I shouldn't have to dig so hard for these answers. Hyacinth (talk) 13:57, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

I think I've readily responded to your questions, when in all honesty I did not have to. So I'm not certain what you mean by that. Could you clarify? - jc37 21:26, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
I mean that policies and practices should be clear. Hyacinth (talk) 22:13, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
You'll please pardon my laughter, it's in no way directed towards you, but I must say that if you believe that assertion, Wikipedia is not the site for you : )
To clarify: I'm sure that we all do the best we can to balance not being a bureacracy with having written clarity. Sometimes successfully, sometimes not. But Wikipedia is not about having written "rules". It's about building an encyclopedia. Everything else should be designed to support that single endeavor. - jc37 03:56, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

Is the claim that categories based on basic demographic information have been approved by convention correct? Hyacinth (talk) 14:09, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

No. Though that was the case around 2 years ago, consensus slowly changed on that over the last 2 years. - jc37 21:26, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Hello, Hyacinth. I just want to bring this up, but your conduct at DRV is frowned upon. The admin who closes the discussion will duly note all arguments for and against deletion/recreation; hectoring every single person who does not agree with you only feeds ill feelings and generates more drama than is needed. If you have stated your case thoroughly, you’re fine. David Fuchs (talk) 23:12, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Listen to yourself. Your 'side' 'lost' the discussion, for lack of a better word, so you're bitter. But even if the outcome isn't what you want, doesn't mean the closer paid no attention to what was said. You have a serious chip on your shoulder, and badgering everyone who disagrees with you helps the wiki not a bit. David Fuchs (talk) 23:47, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
It's very obvious if you had voted in that discussion what your stance would have been. I am saying that replying to every single objection on an AfD or DRV is considered bad form, and does not further your cause. David Fuchs (talk) 00:15, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
I would disagree with that assertion. It is, afterall, a deletion review, aka a deletion discussion and that's what he's doing, even if it is with almost everyone. Nothing wrong with that. -- ALLSTARecho 00:24, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

So what is is that I'm missing here? Perhaps this discussion would better take place at Wikipedia talk:Categorization? Hyacinth (talk) 23:25, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

My apologies for not noticing the question until now. (And noting that the DRV is now closed.)
As for your question: No, I don't think that that talk page is necessarily the "best" place. In my experience the most fruitful (though slow) discussion has happened at WT:UCFD.
I hope this helps. - jc37 20:56, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

WP:UCFD#Category:Wikipedians by interest

I find it insulting that you would accuse me of disrupting Wikipedia to prove a point after you advised me to do so: "If you have concerns about a Wikipedian category, please feel free to nominate it for discussion." (Wikipedia:Deletion_review/Log/2008_January_8#Category:Queer_Wikipedians) Hyacinth (talk) 14:28, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

With all due respect, that does in fact look like a pointy nomination. On the surface, anyway, it appears that you are saying "I can't have mine so nobody else can, either." --Kbdank71 14:59, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
There were several problems with the nomination. And it was rather clearly a WP:POINT nom. However, I'm doing/I've done what I can to avoid biting someone who quite obviously either is quite unexperienced in categorisation (not just Wikipedian categorisation), or is feigning so (intentionally being obtuse) to push a personal POV. (I'd like to presume the former, while accepting that the latter is a possibility.) - jc37 21:13, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
You now insult my level of experience. Hyacinth (talk) 22:21, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
Your actions up to this point, as well as all of your questions, indicate a lack of experience. An observation, not an insult. - jc37 03:50, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

Perhaps you prefer that we not communicate on user talk pages? Hyacinth (talk) 22:37, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

If you're truly looking for helpful information, I have no problem being helpful in this way. Consider that you're the one setting the tone here, I'm merely attempting to respond to what I'm seeing. - jc37 03:50, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
It would be nice to think that the other participants in discussion are the one's setting the tone but it must be admitted that all participants do. You assisted with setting a positive tone in the discussion through many of your statements. For example, your first "proposal" to me that "Cat:Queer Wikipedians" be renamed was actually a dismisal of the possibility, which is, I assume, why I missed it. Perhaps rather than question my motives in violation of WP:Assume good faith and question my experience in contradiction to your ability to verify it, you should focus on your tone and the tone you set in debates. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hyacinth (talkcontribs) 00:54, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
If you read over WP:AGF, you may find that what it says is:
 • This guideline does not require that editors continue to assume good faith in the presence of evidence to the contrary.
In my opinion, you made your POV rather clear in the Village Pump "discussion". Which also meant that you were being a bit less than truthful about your motives during the DRV. That said, I did what I could to be honest, yet attempt to keep the discussion positive. There were enough people who were "going negative", in their POV pushing (using such words as "slaughter", for example).
You may also wish to read over the essay Wikipedia:Don't be a fanatic (which is also linked at WP:AGF). You may find it helpful for the future.
In any case, there have been times in the past where, in hindsight, I wondered if perhaps I should have more carefully considered my "tone". I don't believe that this is one of those cases. If anything, it may be possible that I was too positive and polite in the face of probable deceit. But then, I'm a big fan of WP:AGF, and tend to err on the side of caution. C'est la vie. - jc37 01:29, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
Would you continue to oppose the nomination of Category:Wikipedians by interest for deletion? Hyacinth (talk) 00:38, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
I didn't oppose the nomination. I closed it due to obvious WP:POINT issues. At the moment, I don't see how that has changed.
If I might offer a suggestion, instead of feeling sour grapes, or presuming that you are being prosecuted unfairly, or that a double standard is in place, or whatever else it is that you may be feeling, instead, presume good faith of your fellow Wikipedians, and join in on the existing discussions at WP:UCFD. Though not everyone agrees in every instance, and there is no guarantee that one's opinion will be similar to what consensus is determined to be, everyone's opinion is welcome, and I think it could be a valuable learning experience, if you're truly interested in Wikipedian categories.
If you're not interested in Wikipedian categories in general, and are just upset about the "loss" of your preferred wording of a category name, then I'm sorry, but then I don't think that there would be anything further to discuss, except a suggestion to just "let it go", and move on.
Whatever the case, I hope you have a good day : ) - jc37 00:49, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
I thank you for the link! Though I imagine we will continue to talk in the future: Have a good day as well. Hyacinth (talk) 00:57, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

Gertrude Stein Edits

Hyacinth,

Thanks for helping me out with that messy talk page. I went back in to undo my edit, and was pleased to see the little box in the corner with the old chat.

I'm still learning the software, and I've gotten a little annoyed with old Gertrude, so I've lost some of my enthusiasm for writing her biography. Good thing, huh?

Thanks much!

WPARMENIA

Thanks, but IMO it isn't really an ethnic fight to insist that the composer's heritage be stated as it is in "Grove" and other similar music encyclopedias; simply one to represent the composer and his output accurately. I'm coming from the point of view of a musicologist working in the field of contemporary music (specifically, that having a "world music" outlook). Badagnani (talk) 00:37, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

As a member of WP:Armenia I'm patiently waiting to see the outcome of this. Also note that Tom removed the ethnicity from other articles as well. I don't think mass-revert would have been helpfully, but I'm looking forward to adding those back, sourced of course. VartanM (talk) 00:52, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

Hello! Do you really thank that Maderna is of low importance? Right, the article is far from being good. But Maderna is a quite important figure, I think. Correct me if I'm wrong. --Catgut (talk) 23:51, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

Nesting

Hi, Hyacinth! Just wanted to drop you an FYI - the "nested" parameter of WikiProject banners only works if they are within a WPBS. For instance, this edit to Meredith Monk sorta made the talk page look funny :) Thanks~ -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 06:22, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

Another editor has added the "prod" template to the article Swish (slang), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the prod template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. BJBot (talk) 14:59, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

Swish

Hi, Hyacinth! You might want to review the history of Swish (slang). You'll note that I didn't add that comment - User:Rotovia prodded the article with that comment. I removed it, but I was thinking about Fruit (slang), which recently went through Afd. When I realized my mistake, I decided to put back the prod, figuring editors of the article who knew something about it would be able to handle it through normal processes. Looks like you and Benjiboi are already on it :) -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 15:26, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

AfD nomination of Modern music

An editor has nominated Modern music, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Modern music and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 00:44, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Template:European history by time period requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a deprecated or orphaned template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it is substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes.

Thanks. --MZMcBride (talk) 21:01, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

am sympathetic to the re-creation but aren't you supposed to take it to deletion review first? --BozMo talk 16:51, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

I've deleted the category. A guideline not getting consensus does not overrule deletion review decisions, it will have to be allowed to be recreated at DRV before it can be created again (which I doubt will happen anytime soon, considering there have been 3 deletion reviews all resulting in endorse). You are free to take it there again, however, and I will support recreating the category if consensus is to allow recreation at DRV. Until then, however, the deletion review consensus should be respected. Hope you understand, VegaDark (talk) 00:26, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
I have yet to see any support for the assertion that consensus is to delete. Hyacinth (talk) 07:49, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
Yep. But if you are arguing that policy should triumph over sentiment (which seems a good argument) then I think you have to respect the process. --BozMo talk 21:58, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Iron Man riff.PNG)

Thanks for uploading Image:Iron Man riff.PNG. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. I cannot claim any special knowledge of, or familiarity with, Lettriste theory. I am much more knowledgeable of Situationist theory and practice, and only know the Lettristes because of their association with Debord, et al. This is an area that interests me---why else would it be on my watchlist, yes?---but the complexities of it (one might say, the intentional, and even unnecessary, complexities of it) elude me. I am willing to offer any assistance that I can, you need only ask. Cheers! ---RepublicanJacobiteThe'FortyFive' 22:46, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for uploading Image:Title page MUS159.png. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 21:02, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

Was passing by and I've commented here. Carcharoth (talk) 00:32, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Wow. First, may I say, please archive your talk page. I hope you don't let your fingernails grow that long =)

So I came here from Duchenne smile (long story how I got there) and noted it has no references or anything, and that you were the person who started the page. I think the responsibility is really on the person who creates a page to provide references really. It was a long, long time ago now, but can you please try to rectify the situation? Thanks. Richard001 (talk) 07:18, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Isn't it clear? I'm asking you to provide references. How do I know you didn't just make this stuff up? Wikipedia is built around the idea of references. If we don't cite sources, we have virtually no credibility (and we do have very little credibility, primarily because we don't provide references in most of our articles!)
For this particular article, it's so extremely short that it might be better just to merge it into the similarly short smile, unless it has particular potential for development. Richard001 (talk) 01:28, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
Oh, sorry about that, I obviously didn't look closely enough at the page history. I still certainly think that all articles should be referenced, and in this case I think I would prefer your redirect left as it was. Richard001 (talk) 07:46, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
Look, I'm sorry I got the wrong person; you should have just told me you only created a redirect from the beginning. But you need to stop all this bullshit about references. It's not for other people to go cleaning up after those who create poor articles with no references, they should do this themselves. It's the same with images not being uploaded to Commons; I don't just follow people around cleaning up after them over and over, I tell them what they are doing wrong in the hope that they will do it right. Your assertion that I could have fixed the problem in a few minutes (and I did do a quick web search for a reference, not that it was in any way my responsibility to do so) overlooks the whole point of why I tell people this stuff.
And stop with the sillyness about the reference being no better (or marginally better, or whatever the hell you are trying to say) than nothing. You could also say that even if I verified it I still wouldn't know it was true because it could have been a hoax, or a mistake etc. And even if it wasn't, you could resort to some relativistic postmodernistic twaffle. All we can do is cite references here; we can't verify them for everyone as well. People have to do that themselves if they want to be 100% sure, and we both know it, or at least I hope we do. Richard001 (talk) 09:04, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

It's pretty clear that I could make up a similar article to the former 'Duchenne smile' that sounded believable to most readers without specialist knowledge in that area or an encyclopedic knowledge of everything, yet that was completely fictitious. I think it's very hard to make a case that an article with no references can be okay, and your attempts to have certainly not convinced me in the least. Thus I will continue to chase people up who don't cite sources, while looking a bit closer at page histories. Richard001 (talk) 01:18, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Black Gay Men's Advisory Group requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must include on the external site the statement "I, (name), am the author of this article, (article name), and I release its content under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 and later." You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding hangon to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. ukexpat (talk) 01:30, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Black Gay Men's Advisory Group

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Black Gay Men's Advisory Group, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the dated prod notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? NeilN talkcontribs 03:36, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

Now I'm really confused

I wrote a long explanation of why I removed your quibble tag about Link Wray's invention of the power chord, but before posting it, I went to look at your contributions list to see what kind of editing you do (mostly serious music) and what do I find but your own contribution to Link Wray today:

Wray was noted for pioneering a new sound for electric guitars, as exemplified in his hit 1958 instrumental "Rumble", by Link Wray and his Ray Men, which pioneered an overdriven, distorted electric guitar sound, and "invented the power chord, the major modus operandi of modern rock guitarist"

That is, your own edit, earlier today, states that Link Wray "invented" (unqualified in any way) the power chord and citing a source for the statement! So why didn't you simply add the same information to the "Rumble" article? Why complain of the same information in a slightly different form? What's up with you? Ortolan88 (talk) 23:27, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

PS -- BTW, my objection to the quibble tag was that the phrase "one of the first if not the first" adequately covered the case without the quibble tag. Since it's clear that you added the tag completely arbitrarily, I see no problem with arbitrarily removing it. O88

I have no idea what our little dialog has been about. Rock on, Ortolan88 (talk) 16:08, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of Reception of country music

A tag has been placed on Reception of country music, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

this is an essay at best, and not an encyclopedic article.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add hangon on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this.  Channel ®   00:24, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Response to your message

Hyacinth, Thanks for the tips on editing entries. I'm sorry if I forgot to sign something. I think I usually do sign. I assume you've corrected my mistake wherever it (or they) occurred? If not, I'm going to have to do some searching because I'm not sure what I edited recently. I'm looking at my navigator's History but don't recall any significant edits. Did I do anything after posting a question on the talk page for James K. Polk?

Up above on this page, you state that unsigned messages can't be returned/traced. If that's true, how did you trace my unsigned entries? Is there a way for me to trace entries I may have made but forgot to sign?

Sorry about the treatment you've gotten from some people.

Is this the best way to reach other users, or is there some other message mechanism available? Also, feel free to delete this entry. I just didn't know how else to reach you. Ileanadu (talk) 23:27, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Sly, anti-LGBT user

Hi Hyacinth! Again, I love your nick.

I'm contacting you because of a certain user who's been slyly unLGBTing several key LGBT-related articles. The edits strike major parts of articles plus they're almost always deletions under the guise of formating, style, consistency, etc. In fact, the most blatant one was with the Gay article. Given your interests and your role as an administrator, I think you would know what to do. Mind you, the user in question is not fomenting Wikihate, but is clearly obliterating LGBT anything, bit by bit, including the occurences of the actual abbreviation LGBT and its included terms. --CJ Withers (talk) 00:50, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Re: Jean Cocteau

Frankly, I consider your message on my user page as an attack. You are twisting my response to that fellow's message, one that was quite lacking in the necessary qualities of interpersonal communication, one that was quite hubristic and offputting and gave no indication that he had really read and understood what I had tried to communicate to him. Messages such as the one you left at my page are not really helpful. They merely add to the noise level. If you really wanted to help you would try to understand where both sides are coming from and then tried to find common ground. Haiduc (talk) 01:37, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

Re: Welcome!

Thank you very much for your welcome note! Is it this obvious that I am quite new to Wikipedia? At least I do already sign my messages! Template:Listen instead of Template:Audio?

Hi Hyacinth, I hesitate to say this, because I've noticed how much work you've done with audio samples, but perhaps Template:Listen might be more useful than Template:Audio? To listen to Template:Audio, I have to download the .ogg and open my audio editor to listen to it, and sadly not all OSes support it out of the box. The major annoyance is size of the template, which is easily fscked by being placed in small frames (i.e., in image captions). Of course, you might know all of this already, so tell me if that's the case. :) --Blehfu (talk) 01:35, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Never mind, I have this habit of writing before actually seeing. I see you've used both. I wish they could come up with a version of Template:Listen that would fit more inline. --Blehfu (talk) 01:41, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Recent MIDI uploads.

Any chance you could put these on Commons instead so that other projects can make use of them? Sfan00 IMG (talk) 13:37, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

One of your uploads, "Just perfect fourth", sounds a lot more like an "Equal-tempered major third" instead. The reason appears to be in your Comment:

"Created in Sibelius 5. A M3 with midi pitch bend on 48,63 for 398.046875 cents."

I'm sure you intended this to be 498.046875 cents instead, but as a result a substitution is necessary. I've temporarily linked the Equal-tempered "Perfect fourth" (500 cents) instead. However, your "17 steps in 41" (498.56 cents) might work even better, being only half a cent off perfect. At least until the Just note can be fixed. --Glenn L (talk) 23:53, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

I see you replaced the file just a few minutes ago. Thanks! It sounds correct, and I have reset the list of musical intervals and Pythagorean interval tables to link to your newly uploaded version. --Glenn L (talk) 05:13, 12 October 2009 (UTC)

Half-diminished scale/Tchaikovsky

Hi, Hyacinth,

Long time, no talk! Thank you for your recent musically notated addition to the stub on the "half-diminished scale". I rewrote this one about a year ago (the original was a disaster!). I didn't spend very much time on it...other articles seemed more important (such as Musical Notation) at the time. But at least my work resulted in the removal of the tag, "This Article Needs Wikifying" (or something to that effect). Thanks to your musically notated example, a musically literate viewer can now understand the scale in terms of tones and semitones, and HEAR it on their pianos! (Maybe we should include an audio file, which I'd be happy to contribute.)

I've been too busy with the "real world" of performances to contribute much to Wikipedia for the past while, but hope to resume serious work very soon.

Thanks, also for your work on Tchaikovsky's homosexuality. (I am a STRONG supporter of gay rights!!!) It seems to me that we should recognize that the world has come a long way on this issue: the MAJORITY of Americans now support gay marriage (led, apparently, by Canada, many years after the fact). There's really no need for another Stonewall...there will ALWAYS be some homophobics, just as the KKK still exists.

I KNOW this is not a chat line, but I MUST confess my dedication to Obama! A vote for a third party is a wasted vote. McCain is as homophobic as ever (but I bet he's had a taste of it!). Obama seems sincere in his support of gay rights/pride. Probably the only reason he doesn't have a stronger lead is because is black, and many Americans still discriminate against African-Americans. Cultural progress moves slowly, but it does move!

Thank you for uploading images/media to Wikipedia! As you may know, there is another Wikimedia Foundation project called Wikimedia Commons, a central media repository for all free media. In future, please upload media there instead (see m:Help:Unified login). That way, all of the other language Wikipedias can use them too, as well as our many sister projects. This will also allow our visitors to search for, view and use our media in one central location. If you wish to move previous uploads to Commons, see Wikipedia:Moving images to the Commons (you may view images you have previously uploaded by going to your user contributions on the left and choosing the 'image' namespace from the drop down box). Please note that non-free content, such as images claimed as fair use, cannot be uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons. Help us spread the word about Commons by informing other users, and please continue uploading!--OsamaK 22:07, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

Notability of Phil Kline

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Phil Kline, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Phil Kline seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Phil Kline, please affix the template hangon to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Image source problem with Image:NOT Travis picking.PNG

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:NOT Travis picking.PNG. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Hi. This is to explain that I have taken out the Glass example because this infobox is not for classical musicians, also there's a specific guideline against using these boxes for composers' biographies at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Composers#Biographical_infoboxes. Thanks for your understanding. --Kleinzach 22:51, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

Aikin and Compound intervals

Greetings. I recently made an edit to Interval (music), changing the name of an interval. The history of the page shows that the section I altered was added by you. Could you please have a look, and (since I don't have the Aikin book) if you feel that I have altered an actual quotation, please comment on the talk page. Thanks. Rigaudon (talk) 09:04, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. That edit makes clear what can be directly attributed to Aikin and what isn't. Rigaudon (talk) 21:02, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

Moment/Momente/Moment form

I notice you have just changed or created a redirect of "Moment (Stockhausen)" from "Moment form" to [[Momente], with a note "Form indicates topic while (Stockhausen) did not distinguish between piece and technique". I'm not sure what you mean by this, but the article Moment form makes it very clear that Stockhausen did indeed distinguish the concept (not a technique) of a "moment"—which he used in reference to many compositions from Gesang der Jünglinge and Kontakte (1956 and 1960, respectively) down to Freude for two harps (2005)—from the composition titled Momente. The problem is that there are a number of redirects in other articles designed to help readers understand the concept of a "moment", which now point to the article on the composition Momente, which does not offer the expected explanation. I suggest that the redirect from "Moment (Stockhausen)" be restored to the article on the concept "Moment form", where it belongs.—Jerome Kohl (talk) 22:15, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

Racism

Do you care to retract your accusation of racism? It's not that I see this group as trivial — it's simply that I don't think that they get to define "native" more than anyone else, just as I don't think that the descendents of pre-Columbian residents of Canada get to define "first" more than anyone else does. Nyttend (talk) 02:38, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

No, it's that most of them aren't Wikipedia editors who are bound to make no personal attacks. Nyttend (talk) 02:55, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
What evidence do you have that I'm a racist? What evidence do you have that my words were intended to disparage those whose ancestors lived in the Western Hemisphere before Columbus? Please observe that WP:NPA notes that "Insulting or disparaging an editor is a personal attack regardless of the manner in which it is done", and calling me or my words racist — without substantial evidence for the same — is surely disparaging. Nyttend (talk) 03:11, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

State senator

Having seen your last edit summary and understanding that you don't dispute her Helena residency, I'm confused why you removed the state senator — do you think that she's not notable? State legislators are explicitly mentioned at WP:BIO as being notable, because they're "people who have held...first-level sub-national political office, including members of a legislature...". Nyttend (talk) 03:37, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Do you seriously believe that the works in that list do not specify time signature at all? The only example I have in mind is some of Messiaen's works, which have neither a time signature nor barlines, but that is only because the meter changes too frequently and non-periodically. Moreover, the sources only have a vague, mysterious description for the reader, which in no way reflects the composer's intention. 87.69.130.159 (talk) 10:40, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

First of all, I really applaud you for having created this article. Where do you get access to all these books? Are these ebooks you have on your HD or...?
In any case, sorry to have reverted you but this chord really doesn't exist. I will most likely install Sibelius/Finale in the near future so I can fix instead of deleting.
By the way, the notes for an optimally voiced C713 are (in the following order): C, G, B, E, A. This is what constitutes a thirteenth chord per se, adding other tensions is at the sole discretion of the player. 87.69.130.159 (talk) 21:29, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Feuilles mortes "Dead Leaves" diatonic planing.mid. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

 1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add , without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.

Just a thought

Following our discussion about the "So What chord" – please notice the fifth chord in your transcription of "Noreen's Nocturne". It's voiced exactly like the "So What chord" but called Fm11. 87.69.130.159 (talk) 15:15, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

Thirteenth chords

You are doing a great deal of disservice to Wikipedia readers just to prove your wp:point. Please stop. Moreover, your cites magically lack previews at exactly the right location. Your misinterpretation of these sources won't do as for satisfying your pet policy, WP:V. I also have plenty of evidence that I really tried hard to be nice and engage you in civil and constructive discussions, but your responses were absent or appalling for the most part. Hearfourmewesique (talk) 13:12, 6 July 2009 (UTC)

13ths

Sorry it took a while to respond, I have been busy with other things recently. I'm no expert on music theory --The last time I studied music theory was in the 1970s -- but it seems to me that you are both correct, as Antandrus remarked on Hearfourmewesigue's talk page. I don't see what I can do, and things look like they have calmed down a bit. I hope you can both work this out and come up with language that is acceptable to both of you, and explains things well for a novice. I am constantly amazed by the arguments I see on Wikipedia in which both sides have good points and rather than combine them, they fight over which is more correct. I recall a very heated one about Roman Polanski arguing about whether he was a Polish filmmaker or a French one. All that was needed was to say he was both. -- SamuelWantman 07:57, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Does the word consistency mean anything to you? Hearfourmewesique (talk) 22:05, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

You should realize who's talk page you're on. Hyacinth (talk) 21:14, 9 July 2009 (UTC)
 • I think NE2 does realise whose talk page he's on. I want to echo the same concerns, particularly about this pre-quotation comma that you seem to be inserting everywhere. It is incorrect. Please do not continue to do this. I see one in the "Chord-system" article you've created:

In the common practice period, "the root, 3rd, 7th, and 9th are the most common factors present in the V9 chord," with the 5th, "typically omitted".

Please note also that on WP, the final punctuation goes after the closing quotation marks. See WP:MOS. Tony (talk) 13:31, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

Use of quotations

May I ask why you're using quotations in edits such as this rather than rephrasing it in your own words? --NE2 12:26, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

You're deliberately ignoring my question. Please explain why you're using quotations like that. --NE2 21:28, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

I ask because it seems pointless. --NE2 21:32, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

I have specific concerns about many article contributions you have made. Therefore I have taken it to your talk page. Please respond. --NE2 21:39, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

You should probably read Wikipedia:Quotations. --NE2 21:42, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Since you seem to have missed it, my concern is why you're using quotations in edits such as this rather than rephrasing it in your own words. --NE2 21:43, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

I'm sorry as this may seem out of line, but this discussion kind of reminds me of this character... Note: unfortunately, only a US IP can access this video at this point. Hearfourmewesique (talk) 09:22, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

Ind chord

I am guessing this stands for "indefinite indeterminate chord" because of the absent third. Where exactly did you see this contraction? By the way, now that you acknowledge the use of fifths as chords, please chime in here. Hearfourmewesique (talk) 16:01, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

II-V-I

In the image you have just uploaded, the first "jazz" example can be found in Vivaldi's works (although there it continues with the circle of fourths). Hearfourmewesique (talk) 08:12, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Chord-scale system

It doesn't really explain it for non-experts; I mean, non-jazz musicians, even. Are there more explicit simple ways of laying out the concepts and techniques? Tony (talk) 13:26, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

Dispute: Thirteenth (reply)

Sorry for not replying earlier. I've been away. I'm not an expert on such things as the So What chord anyway. Rigaudon (talk) 22:26, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

You requested that this file was deleted. It is stil in use. So I removed the deletion request. --MGA73 (talk) 18:52, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi, Thanks a lot for the citing. A reply here to prevent reverting:) It says exactly what I thought. The septimal minor third is inbetween fret 2 and 3, not inbetween 7/6 and 6/5. It is on 7/6 in fact. You can hear the tone together with the seventh harmonic by sticking a screwdriver inbetween the strings and the fretboard on that area on an electric guitar. If you move the screwdriver from the 3rd to the 2nd fret and struck the string at the short side you hear a bright multiphonic tone appearing at some point. That's the 7/6 position. The clock/bell sound you hear is (if A is 440) 3080 Hz + 513,33 Hz. You hear the seventh harmonic (which is the sixth overtone) together with the septimal minor third. Can you follow my description? Best wishes, 83.87.74.107 (talk) 09:07, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Sorry, but I reverted again. You don't understand what I'm saying. frets are derived from harmonics. But Western frets are deviated mathmatical fret positions, so the harmonic relationship has disappeared. If you are interested this is a clarification about the relation between harmonics and the fretboard.

http://www.furious.com/perfect/experimentalstringinstruments.html

The harmonic seventh occurs on the string length of 6/7, 5/7, 4/7 etc. With the 3rd Bridge method you play make the counterpart (6/7 from 1/7) audiable as well as the overtone. So you hear the 7th harmonic as well as the pitch of the septimal minor third in the bell like tone.83.87.74.107 (talk) 11:09, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
Can you explain me some more about your ideas? What's the frequency of a septimal minor third if the fundamental is 700Hz? And what is the frequency of the seventh harmonic and what is the frequency of the sixth harmonic?83.87.74.107 (talk) 12:51, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Additionally, users who perform several reversions in content disputes may be blocked for edit warring even if they do not technically violate the three-revert rule. If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding hangon to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Hyacinth

I am in love with him

To whom a hyacinth is dearer

Than I shall ever be dear.

On nights when the field-mice

Are abroad, he cannot sleep.

He hears their narrow teeth

At the bulbs of his hyacinths.

But the gnawing at my heart...

He does not hear.

You're one of my favourite poems! :) evin290 (talk) 13:42, 26 December 2009 (UTC)

Edna

I actually found "Hyacinth" going through a used book store -- it's in a book of Millay poems called The Harp Weaver, and Other Poems for which she won the Pulitzer Prize. She is so wonderful! And, incidentally, she was bisexual, so maybe she picked that particular flower for its mythological connotations as well. After all, the hyacinth in this poem is the man's obsession, not the poet's...

At any rate, I found it very inspiring and wrote a song using its text, so when I saw your username somewhere I couldn't help but send the poem to you. :)

Hello Hyacinth, it's Andrew Francis (u10ajf) here. I was hoping to ask that you might check your reference for Hungarian Gypsy Scale because I have two references to a different scale, an Aeolian #4, taking this name. My references are from the "Guitar Grimoire" by Adam Kadmos and "Monster Scales and Modes" by Dave Celentano. I am aware that nomenclature is pretty arbitrary and that a "my reference is better than yours" dispute would be pretty silly so I have altered the page to mention this ambiguity in the meantime. I hope that this will not offend you.

Hi Hyacinth, Before writing the post above I altered the section on Gypsy Scales. You might want to revert it, I think it was a hasty move on my part. I removed the Hungarian Gypsy (as a mode of Double Harmonic) but then saw that you had extracted your information from a published source and regretted having done so. My apologies.

AfD nomination of Lucy tuning

An article that you have been involved in editing, Lucy tuning, has been listed for deletion. If you are interested in the deletion discussion, please participate by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Lucy tuning. Thank you.

Please contact me if you're unsure why you received this message. — Gwalla | Talk 22:55, 25 January 2010 (UTC)

The article David B. Doty has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No RSs to be found anywhere. Only liner notes and his own work found. Fails WP:N and WP:MUSIC because it fails WP:V.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the dated prod notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing dated prod will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Jubilee♫clipman 16:15, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

"tresillo" in clave page

Hi, I disagree with your counting scheme in the depiction of tresillo in divisive structure. The proper representation in standard notation would be using the 2/4 time signature. I think you changed my counting scheme because all clave examples on the page are written as two measures of 4/4. Next week I'll generate some examples showing clave in a single measure. Notice that the standard pattern example you put up on the "bell pattern' page shows the figure in a single measure. In contrast, the "campana" part you put up on the bell pattern page is in two measures. This issue of whether to depict clave and related patterns in a single measure or two measures should probably be addressed. I'll be gone this weekend, but hope to address this issue early next week.

By the way, I like the other changes you made to the clave page —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dr clave (talkcontribs) 20:29, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

"Valves too large"

The following has been added today by Hyacinth:

Note that since valves lower the pitch, a valve which causes a pitch to be too low (flat) must itself be too large (sharp), while a valve which causes sharp pitches must itself be to small (flat).

I don't think this adds much and is even confusing, i.e., the valves aren't "too large", the tubing is "too long". But it's not really "too long", it's off in intonation but "working as designed" to make the combination of valves and and slides as easy to use as possible under the imperfect circumstances of the valved brass system.

I'm curious what others think before I mangle the prose ... JacquesDelaguerre (talk) 22:46, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

Longer tubes sound flatter than shorter ones. How can "too large" be sharp? I just put the page back where it was before that addition; clarification needed here before restoring that text. __ Just plain Bill (talk) 23:22, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
You know how too large can be sharp (that's what sharp means), you just couldn't think of it because of my horribly unclear text. Hyacinth (talk) 01:51, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
Usually you are a lot clearer than that. What's up? I ask on your talk page so you can clear this out of sight when you feel like it. No real need to answer... Dude, be well. __ Just plain Bill (talk) 02:17, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
OK, got your reply. In related news, I only have a general practical sense, gained and decayed decades ago, of what goes on with the third valve of a trumpet or cornet, and the various compensations of it. Wiser heads than mine will have to explain that better. __ Just plain Bill (talk) 02:34, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

Conflicted licensing on image File:Rite of Spring main theme.PNG

The above noted image or media file appears to have conflicted licensing. As an image cannot be both 'free' and 'unfree', a check of the exact status of this media/image concerned is advised.Sfan00 IMG (talk) 10:26, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on File:Blast beat drum pattern 4.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Fair use rationale for File:A Hard Day's Night opening phrase.mid

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:A Hard Day's Night opening phrase.mid. Tonality question

Hi there. I'm copy editing the Tonality article, and I cannot figure out what this sentence is trying to say:

"Theorists such as Edward Lowinsky, Hugo Riemann, and others pushed the date at which modern tonality began, and the cadence began to be seen as the definitive way that a tonality is established in a work of music (Judd, 1998)."

If you could clarify that for me, it would be extremely helpful. Thank you. Torchiest (talk | contribs) 01:33, 7 May 2010 (UTC)

The article Fitness professional has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

unreferenced dictionary definition - not encyclopedic.

PamD (talk) 20:36, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

Welcome to Wikipedia. It might not have been your intention, but your recent edit removed maintenance templates from Forever Einstein. When removing maintenance templates, please be sure to either resolve the problem that the template refers to, or give a valid reason for the removal in the edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry, as your removal of this template has been reverted. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia, and if you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. Thank you. Please don't remove tags; especially ones to articles you created. --moreno oso (talk) 06:40, 29 May 2010 (UTC)

BTW, you removed the one source the article had which now makes the article unreferenced. The one source tag is much better than an unreferenced tag. External links are not considered references. ----moreno oso (talk) 06:44, 29 May 2010 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Forever Einstein requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band or musician, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for musical topics. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding hangon to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. --moreno oso (talk) 10:37, 29 May 2010 (UTC)

Max Meyer = Neiman Marcus Fashion Award?

Hi, what's your rationale for adding Max Meyer (fashion) to Neiman Marcus Fashion Award? From what I saw on a quick Google/recce, Max Meyer definitely sounds like he would have won an award, so it's a very credible addition, but he wasn't on the official list I had from the Neiman Marcus archivist in response to an emailed enquiry. help with some intervals?

Hi, I am currently working on the logarithm article (in maths). I'm trying to get a nice list of musical interval sound samples (octave, tritone, minor third, semitone, perhaps quarter-tone and cent) and I came across your File:Cent_on_C.mid which sounds very nice (even though I can't hear a difference :). My question: would you be willing to help me out by creating a sound file for each of the above-mentioned intervals (going up, piano sound or something nice (i.e., no beep), all starting with the same lower tone)? I'm aware that there is some work by SoundOfNumbers (e.g. File:One_Cent_Interval.ogg), but that does not cover all these intervals, plus they sound kind of ugly (to me). Thanks a lot! Replaceable fair use File:Unsyncopated example.ogg

Thanks for uploading File:Unsyncopated example.ogg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

 1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add , without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
 2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. Tuplet article - counting

Hello,

Just raising your attention to the fact that in the article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuplet

... there is an explanatory image which may have a flaw in its design http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Tuplet_counting_subdivide.png

I.E. The top stave has a single triplet figure over the whole bar, as is the lower staff; but it appears from the corresponding discussion it should illustrate the comparison of THREE quaver-triplets to ONE crotchet-triplet.

So top stave was apparently meant to have THREE triplet figures ...

hope I made sense and that this comment may be of some use (well if you don't think it's worth the bother editing / replacing the image anyway that's fair enough - hope I didn't trouble you pointing out such a minute detail ... )

Thanks :) Cheers, Joe 118.93.28.110 (talk) 10:38, 6 September 2010 (UTC)

Concerning Tertian

The major intervals may also be altered so as to become diminished (reduced by the necessary equivalent of 2 flats) or augmented (attenuated by the necessary equivalent of 1 sharp). The necessary equivalent can vary depending on the key signature, that is, one may not actually see a flat in the resultant alteration. The necessary equivalent can also vary with respect to the treatment of melody and harmony, i.e., a descending melody of B to Bb to Bbb can be written B - Bb - A, even though the harmony on the A is a diminished 7th chord built on C.

Overall, it is best to teach the perfect intervals first, as they are earlier reflections in the overtone series. Then teach the major intervals because they pair out better with respect to the major scale, tetrachords, and the cycle of 5ths. Prophet of the Most High (talk) 03:31, 21 October 2010 (UTC)

Hi Hyacinth... Sonata Form Question

I just visited the bloody battlefield of the Sonata form page. I couldn't read the whole thing as every few paragraphs I'd find myself standing up, blurting an obscenity and pace for ten minutes before continuing. All I managed to do was remove one snippet of stupidity and then resigned from the field. What I'm surprised at is the subject: Sonata form is not a really difficult, tangled and obscure subject. It isn't very political and there's no money attached to it. So why these difficulties with this page?

I appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia. I don't always agree with you but I appreciate your thinking. Gingermint (talk) 04:34, 23 October 2010 (UTC)

Facebook Images

I noticed that Facebook utilizes Wikipedia images. The first image on the top of an article will show up on a FB "Page" or as a pop-up thumbnail/icon at a link. I also noticed that when an image is added to an article, it doesn't show up on FB right away. Are the delays because the image needs some kind of approval? If a FB "Page" has a title that is redirected to another Wikipedia title, will the image (from the article you are redirected to) show up on FB (seems to) ... and, if not, can an image be placed on the redirect that will? (even though it would not normally be seen on Wikipedia ... due to the redirect) J-klem (talk) 05:45, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

Musical phrasing

Hi Hyacinth!

I'd like to ask you to please consider keeping the articles Musical phrasing and Phrase (music) distinct (i.e. no merge). While the two are related, "phrasing" relates to the art of shaping music during a performance. The numerous quotes are not there to be shoved into wikiquote (you failed to complete this task anyway), but were selected to highlight diverse important aspects of phrasing, and thus need to be an integral part of the article. As the author of the "musical phrasing" article, I feel the concepts are interesting and disjoint enough, to be kept in separate articles. Waiting sincerely for your nod of approval. Commas in figures

Hi Hyacinth,

you are doing a great job with your figures and audio files. However, if possible, would you mind to show commas as they are, rather than added up to an octave?

Notice that the audio files correctly play commas, not intervals formed by octave+comma. And I sincerily do not understand the reason why an article about a comma should show a comma plus an octave. I am sure you have a good reason, and that you can explain it, but I guess most readers cannot understand without an explanation. You might explain your choice in the articles, but I guess it is much better to keep them as simple as possible.

For instance, in the intro of semitone there are two pictures which correctly show semitones, rather than semitones plus octaves. Even when the two notes share the same staff position. I think this is the clearest approach.

By the way, do you know whether "major and minor (or smaller and larger) apotome" is used in just intonation for diatonic semitones?.

Hi Hyacinth, I am still waiting for your answer. Please see also Talk:Pythagorean comma#Images showing octave + comma. — Paolo.dL (talk) 19:42, 4 December 2010 (UTC)

Reverting without explaining

Hyacinth,

this is the second time you revert my edits without explaining why. This is very unpolite. In my edit summaries I carefully explained my edits. You can disagree, of course, but you can't ignore my explanations. — Paolo.dL (talk) 23:21, 5 December 2010 (UTC)

I will explain more accurately: I am the author of these two images. They are drawn in scale, meaning that you can compare the sizes of the two commas, semitones and tones. So, I set a width, for each of them, equal to exactly 50% the full original image width (I chose the font size of the labels, in the original image, to make them well readable when reduced to 50% original size).

WP:IMGSIZE gives an advice, (it says "should generally be"). This is a specific case, in which it is advisable in my opinion to publish an image about 25% larger than the maximum suggested by WP:IMGSIZE.

Anyway, my main point is that, whatever is their size, the two pictures cannot have the same width, as they are drawn in scale.

Paolo.dL (talk) 23:45, 5 December 2010 (UTC)

By the way, MOS:IMAGES says that an image can be wider [than 400px] if it uses the "center" or "none" options to stand alone.

Paolo.dL (talk) 23:52, 5 December 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for understanding my point and computing correct proportions. However, this is just a matter of personal preference (see MOS:IMAGES), so please indulge me. I designed these pictures to be read at 50% their original size, and even their caption is written so that it fills no more than 3 rows when they have 50% width.

Consensus before merger

Please do not merge articles without consulting with other editors on the talk page, as you did here. Also, it would help if you reviewed the material to make sure you weren't misinterpreting it. You know, not everybody can be right all the time, that's just how it goes. There will be times when other editors point out your mistakes... It's nothing personal.BassHistory (talk) 01:32, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Diminished unison

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Diminished unison, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). Musical forms category

Hi Hyacinth, I have been working at bit on rare groove and was thinking it would be good to have a section in groove(music) about rare groove - which I am about to start working on. I noticed your contribs. and I noticed that you are suggesting a category 'musical forms'. I found a link at Yale that shows this is how they organise as well - so I put this as 'keep' on the discussion for musical forms with the link below:

Hi, Hyacinth. There was a query posted at Talk:Circle_of_fifths#Circle_of_fifths_image.2Fmid_file about a typo that appears to be from a recent edit you made there. Could you please correct the image file and, if appropriate, the accompanying sound file? Alternatively, if this is not an error, perhaps an explanatory note would be helpful.—Jerome Kohl (talk) 18:27, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
