The 84th Regiment[edit]

Hi,
You asked how I know that the 84th (Royal Highland Emigrants) Regiment were not in the New York or Philadelphia Campaigns. Well, I thought that I knew. On February 26, I explained my evidence for so concluding on the Regiment’s discussion page under the heading, ‘Campaign Participation’ (I forgot to sign my post at the time, which I have now done.). I am pretty familiar with British regimental participation in the American Revolutionary War and all of the evidence that I could find (which I list on the Discussion Page) pointed to the 84th having no involvement in New York 1776 or Philadelphia 1777. I deleted the bits about the New York, Philadelphia/Monmouth and Penobscot Campaigns because they were uncited (Wikipedia policy encourages users to "aggressively" delete all uncited claims) and because they contradicted all of my available information. I thought (and still think) that the claim about the 84th defending Penobscot in 1779 was down to someone mixing them up with another regiment – the 82nd – and I thought (past tense) that the stuff about NY and PA was the result of similar misconceptions.
Nevertheless, I appear to have been misguided. A new post has been added to the 84th article's Discussion Page, right below mine, from Kim Stacy, who has done research into the 84th and found that companies from the Regiment in fact served in the 2nd Light Infantry Battalion of General Howe’s army; and who writes, “I will be happy to share what I have with you to date”. This is good news and I have emailed Kim Stacy via the address given on the page to make further enquiries. As regards incorporation of Kim Stacy’s findings into the article, everything depends on whether his/her (you don’t know whether a ‘Kim’ is male or female) sources have been published. Wikipedia policy absolutely forbids the use of what it calls “original research” as sources for its articles - to the extent that anything unpublished is out of bounds. I expect that the rationale for this regulation is that information citing published sources can be easily checked for authenticity, whereas information gleaned from archive research cannot. I am hoping that further information from Kim Stacy will be forthcoming.
In the meantime, if you have references that support the 84th’s involvement in the New York and Pennsylvania Campaigns, then do not hesitate to add your information to the article along with citations.
By the way, congratulations on all the sterling work that you have done for the article; helping to give the men of the Royal Highland Emigrants the place in history that they earned.

On a more specific note, you've asserted in two articles that Joseph Broussard was present at the Battle of Bloody Creek (1757). I'd really like to know the source for that, since I've not seen it claimed anywhere, and some writers explicitly claim the leaders of the Acadians in that action were unknown. Feel free to to rewrite it at the temporary page linked to from the article. An admin will review the page in a week and take it from there. Keep in mind while writing that you have to avoid a close paraphrase (which is why I blanked it) and this is generally easier to do if you start entirely from scratch and relying upon multiple sources rather than trying to rework existing material from a single source. Okay, I sat down and read them side by side and most of what you rewrote looks good. There were a couple of paragraphs where you just removed sentences that I feel are still a problem (the Siege of Louisbourg and the first paragraph of Battle of Grand Pre) as they still parallel the source too closely. The second one in particular I know that you removed some sentences, but what you left is still a copyright problem. I know rewriting is a pain, so I appreciate you taking the time to rework the article. I've narrowed the blanking so it only covers those two paragraphs. Image provenance[edit]

You uploaded the image File:DonaldMacDonald84thRegiment.jpg, claiming on the description page that you created the work yourself. I (and the GA reviewer at Talk:Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge/GA1) are skeptical that you actually painted the image yourself. Can you tell me who painted the image (and when they painted it), and where it (the artwork, since this is presumably a photograph you took) is located? Thanks! Taking a picture of an artwork doesn't make it your own creation. It looks like it is probably old enough to be Public Domain, or 70 yrs after the death of the artist. I could only find out that the image was purchased at auction and is in a "private collection. I'm not sure what this means in terms of wiki criteria for images and copyright. Images that do not have adequate provenance -- obviously incorrect sourcing or licensing -- may be deleted (see commons:Commons:Deletion policy for a more complete story). This is not something I would pursue in this case, since, as Heironymous points out, the image is very probably in the public domain due to its age. The inadequate provenance means at a minimum that articles cannot pass formal (GA, A-class, or FA) reviews with such images in them. You should always seek to identify (1) when the image (i.e. the artwork) was created (2) by whom (3) when that person died (4) when the image might have been published. If you have a photograph of something three-dimensional (a sculpture or a painting in its frame), you also need the same information about the photograph, since it is then separately copyrightable. All of this information is needed to determine whether or not an image is in the public domain. (As a rule, you should also try to find out where the original artwork is located if you do not know. Source question[edit]

Do you have the page numbers for your addition to the Massachusetts article? I don't doubt that it's legitimate, and its not that big of a deal, but page numbers should generally be given along with the book. A four-line window. The top line says "Edit summary (Briefly describe the changes you have made)". The second line is a blank input area. The third is one checkbox for "This is a minor edit" and another for "Watch this page". The last line contains buttons "Save page", "Show preview", "Save Changes", and a non-button "Cancel".
The edit summary field appears above the "Save page" button.

Then for references we have templates you can use if you wish...this will allow you to add more helpful info to refs like isbn numbers and links to books etc...See Wikipedia:Citation templates for all the different kinds (ps what your doing now is fine and this is simply a suggestion.)

Expulsion of Acadians[edit]

Why do you keep removing the reference to the removals being ethnic cleansing? The removals are one of the history's classic examples of ethnic cleansing. The major historians of the topic (Plank, Faragher) are crystal clear on this. And this is old news. It already said "forced removal" - why do you take offense at "ethnic cleansing" - Here are three different dictionary and encyclopedia entries on ethnic cleansing: 1) "The systematic elimination of an ethnic group or groups from a region or society, as by deportation, forced emigration, or genocide." 2. "the attempt to create ethnically homogeneous geographic areas through the deportation or forcible displacement of persons belonging to particular ethnic groups" (Brittanica), and 3. "the expulsion, imprisonment, or killing of an ethnic minority by a dominant majority". Another encyclopedia uses this definition: "the elimination of unwanted ethnic groups by deportation, forcible displacement, or genocide." Here are links to articles, sites and books all openly acknowledging and discussing the removals as a well-known example of ethnic cleansing. They are by historians, government officials, legal scholars, etc., not some lone blogger:

There is not unanimity among leading historians that using the term "ethnic cleansing" is appropriate in referring to the Expulsion of the Acadians. I have tried to reference the different historians in the "Historical Comparisons" section on the Expulsion of the Acadians article. I haven't yet included historian John G. Reid who also disagrees with using the term. John Grenier is also quite critical of Faragher (see his preface to War in Nova Scotia). I think using the phrase "forced removal" is as close as the unanimity gets. I would recommend that we develop the Historical Comparisons section using some of the footnote content you put on the John Gorham article along with what I have. We could refer people to the historical comparison section the first time "forced removal" is used. Rather than the article taking a position on using the term ethnic cleansing, as you know, wiki is interested in showing the different sides of any particular issue. Father Le Loutre's War[edit]

John Grenier puts forward the "Father Le Loutre's War" frame on these series of conflicts in his books The Far Reaches of Empire: War in Nova Scotia 1710-1760 (University of Oklahoma Press, 2008) and The first way of war: American war making on the frontier, 1607-1814 (Cambridge University Press, 2005). He outlines his rational for naming these conflicts as Father Le Loutre's War. Very much so (the references). It is a helpful concept, but is is new. There aren't too many commoners with wars named after them! I think you also need to say something about Le Loutre himself and his motivations, such as we understood them. Presumably Grenier has something on this. I also note that your article on Le Loutre no few references for Le Loutre' bio. You should add them, including page refs. FYI, there is a coding trick in Wikipedia that allows you to provide inline page refs. It is this templeate: : p.xyz  that you place immediately after the "ref" as in this example. Raid on Grand Pre[edit]

I am not bias against new englanders, since I live in New England. However, the image of Church instead of Grand Pre, is as sinister as putting James Eagan Holmes` photo instead of the Aurora cinema photo in 2012 Aurora shooting. You forget that Church attack a people who had nothing to do with the Raid on Deerfield. Like attacking Virginians for what Massachusetts did. Furthemore, he went out of his way not only to kill people, burn their homes, destroy their crops, but scalp them as well. Tell me, why did you name it Father Le Loutre's War and not the Anglo-Mi'kmaq War? Furthermore, why Father Rale's War, and not the Anglo-Wabanaki War? The two priests were not part of all the conflicts involving the Abenakis and the Mi'kmaqs against the English colonists? Le Loutre was twice captured by the English and was not in Acadia for at least two years. Overlap with Chignecto / Tantramar topics?[edit]

Hi there. I've been updating Sackville, New Brunswick and have noticed that there's a fair bit of content that is repeated for example among the topics Tantramar Marshes, Isthmus of Chignecto, Beaubassin, Fort Beauséjour etc. I've already tried to discuss this on talk pages for Sackville and Tantramar. I had the idea that the Tantramar article could focus more on the natural environment, while the scope of the Sackville article would stick closer to the human history of the area. My concern is that anyone clicking around in the pages is going to be confused as to the context of various historical events. I notice you recently contributed a number of images to the Nova Scotia Category of Wikimedia Commons. While the length and breadth of these contributions is much appreciated, they are in need of serious cleanup. Actually User:Justlettersandnumbers, unless you are discussing a different issue, the material came from an external source, not within Wikipedia. I failed to follow up on the point I should have made, because I got distracted. @Hantsheroes, we need some way of verifying that it is OK to copy that material. There are at least two options. The easiest one, if it is possible, is for you to add a note to the original source indicating that the material is licensed with an acceptable license, such as {{cc-by-sa-3.0}}. Well, Sphilbrick, I'm probably well adrift here, not for the first time (and, I fear, probably not for the last, either). I did not see any problem with the external source identified by the bot because that content was posted on 5 September 2013, and the closely similar content at Northeast Coast Campaign (1745), later copied without attribution to the new article, was created by Hantsheroes on 26 February 2012. Am I misreading that, or did you come across some other external source? I was about to provide attribution for the in-wiki copying, but will now hold off until this is fully clear. No, I don't think you are adrift, looks like you have done more homework than I have. I focused on the creation date of the present article which was 20 June 2014, and missed the existence of the 1745 campaign article. Nice catch, which means it is likely the Wikipedia material came first. So you r information about how to properly attribute when copying within Wikipedia is on point. Hi, i see your new article on a Battle of Placentia. I am getting frustrated trying to see a source you included in the article: https://archive.org/stream/newvoyagestonort03laho#page/n277/mode/2up. Is there any way to stop that page from streaming on and on? Does that source actually have material on that battle? Any help appreciated. Maine forts and 10-inch Nova Scotia guns[edit]

I noticed your article on Fort Mary (Maine). I've also been improving articles on Maine forts recently, although my references largely limit me to post-1783 forts. Troupes de la marine[edit]

Hi! I reverted back to the original version because many regiments changed names but they have their own articles. Example: Régiment de Béarn (1684), Régiment Béarn (1762), Régiment Bourbonnais, Régiment d'Agénois (1776), 29e demi-brigade de bataille have through the years changed names and are all linked in some way, but they have separate articles. I agree with this because changing of a name is not just cosmetic, it has a profond change, just like when compagnies change names, they change administrations, politics, strategies, etc., and often many people get fired, such as myself. If you look at city names, Constantinople became Istanbul, but the two cities are not the same. I live in Québec City, and when performances are given by the Troops de la marine, they dress up as Troop de la marine, and when they give performances of the Compagnies Franches de la Marine, they dress up differently and have a different flag. The former is a 17th century regiment, the later 18th century. After Jean-Baptiste Colbert died, things gradually changed which could have to do with the change in name. Furthermore, so many books and articles talk about Troops de la marine, that it is good for the reader to know that we have an article on them. You and I like history a lot, or we would not be here. I see so many new articles on atheletes. As soon as they start a professional sport, their name shows up in wikipedia and they have not even provened themselves. I took the photo of the Hess cross that is part of the Parks Canada collection at the Halifax Citadel in Halifax, Nova Scotia. They claim the cross belonged to Rudolf Hess. I have no way to verify that. Parks Canada could probably be contacted. I think the story was that it fell into the hands of a Canadian soldier that brought it back to Canada. It is not correct to state that slavery in Canada ended before the 19th century, and there are other inaccuracies. The legal situation was far more complex than you make it out to be. The colonies that would later form Canada had their own laws and legal rulings. For example, it was Upper Canada that ruled that no new slaves could be imported into the province, leading to it becoming a destination for escaping slaves, not Canada as a whole. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
