Thanks for your comments on User:NCISfan2's talk page. This is getting out of hand, although there's a little more than meets the eye where 206 is concerned. I'm considering an incident report of some sort; any thoughts on what the next move might be? Honestly, I have no idea what to do about the guy. I'm not sure if it's a lack of maturity, competence, or something else entirely. I'd like to see him turn it around, but I haven't seen that he's interested in hearing constructive criticism. I'd hoped someone would take him in hand, but then he declared himself adopted by an editor who has hardly been seen in 2012. If someone else takes the lead in going down the dispute resolution path I'd be happy to help out as I can, but he'd have to first acknowledge that there's a problem for that to be effective. I'm inclined to agree with 206, that this is beyond the point of simple ignoring. He doesn't seem to understand, or care to understand rules, he's predatory in his use of warning templates, and frankly, he doesn't seem to quite have a grip on what he can and cannot do around here. I want to read his edit history back a month or two, then have a think. No one incident is all that bad, but when we begin to add them up, they fall into a pattern that doesn't neatly fit into any of the conventional forms of dispute resolution. A friendly hello

We crossed swords briefly regarding Solano County but I want to say hello in a more friendly way, and not leave you with a grim impression. I live in Oakland but I've quite enjoyed a handful of trips to Healdsburg, mainly to mix sound for jazz festival shows at the Raven. I have not yet written Bear Republic Brewery but I may some day, because I like Racer 5 IPA so much. I've biked along West Dry Creek with friends for wine tasting, but I have not yet visited Pug's Leap whose cheese is just fantastic. (There's another article to write!) Healdsburg appears to have avoided, narrowly, the sort of utopian communities that set up shop in and around Santa Rosa a century ago, such as Fountain Grove and Altruria, and Icaria Speranza near Cloverdale. Then there's all the commune fuss around Ukiah starting with Mann Ranch in the 1960s. To me, Healdsburg is idyllic enough as it is.
The Raven is just a classic rectangular shoebox-shaped movie venue, not really conducive to good sound, yet they have so many famous performers come through. My favorite was Charlie Haden who I had assisted one time at the Monterey Jazz Festival in the early '90s with his Liberation Music Orchestra—a horrible, horrible train wreck of a show punctuated by Haden screaming at the other musicians and even the gospel choir because they were too loud for his painful tinnitus. By June 2008, though, he had mellowed considerably and his hearing problems had been sorted out; Haden's show that night at the Raven was inspired, enchanting and riveting. That sounds to me like the Healdsburg article needs some coverage of the Seventh-day Adventist Church era, then (see Pacific Union College#History for more, although now I should add Rio Lindo Academy to the list above as well). They're why a town with ~10K people has a "University Avenue."

I think that with a little work, the Raven could be an absolutely amazing place for live music—I'm always baffled (like when driving out to Sebastopol's Studio E) why more concerts aren't held in H'burg. Dori ☾Talk ⁘ Contribs☽ 05:43, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

I appreciate this isn't quite what you signed up for, but I figured as people who are already pretty good at evaluating whether material is useful or not useful through Special:NewPages, you might be interested :). Over the last few months we've been developing the new Article Feedback Tool, which features a free text box. it is imperative that we work out in advance what proportion of feedback is useful or not so we can adjust the design accordingly and not overwhelm you with nonsense.

This is being done through the Feedback Evaluation System (FES), a tool that lets editors run through a stream of comments, selecting their value and viability, so we know what type of design should be promoted or avoided. We're about to start a new round of evaluations, beginning with an office hours session tomorrow at 18:00 UTC. Entry for Mega Wars III

Dori, I have not been able to get on recently but I just read your email which was I believe because I placed a reference to the topic to a page I maintain. I am not sure I understand why you think this is for promotional purposes since I get no income from this and really don't talk about myself except in context of the topic. The two references in the topic to articles by Maury Markowitz both produce 404 page not found errors. I think I have one of those articles on my site but truthfully the only thing I have done with the site recently is pay the bill.

I love and use Wikipedia and would like to add to it but I am not sure about how to do it within the guidelines, which I will go back and reread after this.

For instance I have been working on a post describing the Houston Techfest, which I founded and have run for the last 5 years. We have had almost 1,000 people attending and we are moving to a new venue this year. I just mention myself in passing, in context, but I wonder if this would be viewed as promotional also?

I will go back and re-read the guidelines but any guidance you can provide would be welcome. Thank you,

The reviewer left the following comment about this submission: This submission doesn't sufficiently explain the importance or significance of the subject. See the guidelines on the notability of music-related topics. Please provide more information on why this musical artist or musical recording is worthy of inclusion in an encyclopedia, and support it by citing published sources that are reliable and independent.

I have adjusted the introduction to reflect the trenchant aspect to Whole Lotta Rosies, i.e., that it started a music trend in Southern California which has now been copied again and again: an all-girl tribute band playing cover versions of all-male heavy metal rock.

I'd offer that Whole Lotta Rosies classifies as as "notable" based on Wikipedia's following criteria:

A musician or ensemble ... may be notable if it meets at least one of the following criteria:

1.Has been the subject of multiple, non-trivial, published works appearing in sources that are reliable and are independent from the musician or ensemble itself.

I think Rock City News (http://www.rockcitynews.com/) would be considered reliable and independent. It's been around since 1983 in print and/or online format, the longest-lived rock publication in the LA area. Likewise, I'd suggest that Hustler Magazine (whether or not one appreciates the pictorial content) is a valid souce of reportorial information. Los Angeles Magzine, which is also cited, is scarcely some fly-by-night pamphlet. The group was also cited in the June 2002 issue of PLAYBOY in the article "Greatest Tributes in Rock."

I included the more-obscure South Korean English-language newspaper MORNING CALM WEEKLY citation to verify that WLR had indeed appeared overseas and was written up in more than just a "now playing" notice.

4.Has received non-trivial coverage in independent reliable sources of an international concert tour, or a national concert tour in at least one sovereign country.

How about at least 6 sovereign countries? Rosies received local reviews in military newspapers on their tours of Germany, Sweden, Sarejevo & Bosnia (not available) and Okinawa. I only have access to the South Korea newspaper, which is cited as an example.

6.Is an ensemble which contains two or more independently notable musicians, or is a musician who has been a member of two or more independently notable ensembles.

Since at least two of the band members (Melanie Sisneros & Jenny Warren) qualify as "independently notable musicians" by virtue of the fact that they are in fact listed on their own Wikipedia pages, I'd say this is another criterion met. Wouldn't you?

7.Has become one of the most prominent representatives of a notable style or the most prominent of the local scene of a city; note that the subject must still meet all ordinary Wikipedia standards, including verifiability.

Given that there were no "all-girl hard rock tribute bands" in L.A. before Whole Lotta Rosies, and there are a bunch now, including two which stem directly from ex-Rosies band mambers (Girls Got Rythmn, and ThundHerStruck), I'd say this is another qualification.

8.Has won or been nominated for a major music award, such as a Grammy, Juno, Mercury, Choice or Grammis award.

"Major" is certainly a key factor, but given that they are essentially an LA-based band and the LA-based music magazine Rock City News awarded the band “Most Outstanding Female Tribute Band” three years in a row, I think that's "major" within the parameters of the LA rock scene.

10.Has performed music for a work of media that is notable, e.g. a theme for a network television show, performance in a television show or notable film, inclusion on a notable compilation album, etc.

Again, it depends on the definition of "notable." The movie in which the band appeared prominently, "Unbeatable Harold," had some major stars like Dylan McDermott of THE PRACTICE, Henry Winkler, Gladys Knight and Charles Durning... and, heck, it even has its own Wikipedia entry. "Notable"... well, it's not Gone With the Wind, okay, but it's not Plan 9 from Outer Space, either.

That's six criteria out of a dozen, in a situation which calls for a subject to meet "at least one" of the criterion.

ADDENDUM note to DoriSmith

The mini-universe of tribute bands may seem trivial, and actually it's new to me. I didn't know much about it before I started writing this, but it clearly means something to the fans who attend these shows, and to the bands themselves.

There are a number of similar bands listed already on Wiki which are co-equal (or lesser?) in accomplishment and notoriety than Whole Lotta Rosies. To wit:

Both have clearly been classified as "sufficiently notable" for inclusion. The unique aspect of AC/She, other than it is also an all-girl configuration, seems to be they only play AC/DC songs written before 1980. Call me perplexed, but is that any more or less "sufficiently notable" than WLR? Both bands sprang up nearly simultaneously, and indeed both are profiled in the HUSTLER article which is cited on both the AC/DShe page and in my article.

The AC/DShe entry is nicely referenced, but are the references any more reliable than the ones I cite? One, for instance, is the compendium of Chuck Klosterman, which has a reprint of a brief interview he did with the band members for SPIN magazine... which is not available via the link cited (it's only a link to a review of the book itself).

If the rejection of this article is just a matter of citations and references, please let me know and I'll shore it up the best I can.

At 18:45 26 March, User:Aaron Booth reviewed your submission and declined it as non-notable. Ninety minutes later, you resubmitted the proposal with only a few minor changes. In my opinion, those edits didn't fully address the issue—for instance, you didn't add any additional sources. Consequently, I declined the submission for the same reason.

Push Girls Wikipedia page

Hello DoriSmith,

I spent a great deal of time yesterday entering information for an upcoming show called Push Girls. The majority of what I entered appears to have been removed, and I'm not quite certain what is triggering your red flags so if you could help me, I'd surely appreciate it. The majority of shows on tv have Wikipedia pages so I am confused why the content I entered has been removed; in fact, the majority of shows have exponentially more information about the show than the page I'm editing. This unscripted show is about a topic that not many people can identify with so I want to give as much insight and information as I can about the cast members as well as the show as a whole. That said, there appears to be a great many instances on Wikipedia that are precedent setting for the types of information I am providing on the Push Girls page:

What I entered was extremely basic: - photo of cast (provided to me by the photographer and I was given specific permission to use it on the Wikipedia page as it's fair use)

WT:Articles for creation/Donor Committee for Enterprise Development

Hi Dori Smith. Thanks very much for reviewing the article I wrote on the Donor Committee for Enterprise Development (DCED). Though I have been using the tutorials, I am new to editing in wikipedia. Could you give me any advice on the article, which you recently turned down as containing copyright information. Are there any partioular areas of both the wikipedia entry and the DCED website that you feel are problematic? I have already been turned down once on the same article on the issue of copyright for the Structure page of the DCED website, but then I amended the wikipedia entry to put it more in my own words so am not sure where the current copyright issue is. Also in the field of private sector development, there really are a lot of industry phrases such as 'sustainable poverty reduction' or 'private sector development in conflict affected areas' which are unavoidable, so its hard to escape some repetition. Queries about judging the validity of a source or statement

Hi DoriSmith,

I am not affiliated with the party/company for which the page Andrew Forde was created. However, I have questions about judging the validity of certain edits, for example the substitution of the word engineer for graduate student, despite articles from the accrediting institutions stating the individuals position as such.

Excuse me if I tend to doubt that you have no personal knowledge of or affiliation with Mr. Forde—after all, you know his birthdate, which isn't found in any publicly-accessible information online (and I've looked).
My inclination to not describe Andrew Forde as an engineer has to do with the first line in the linked article: "An engineer is a professional practitioner of engineering…" Between his studies and running multiple companies and organizations, does he also work as engineer (i.e., is he a professional)? Additionally, everything in the lead should be supported by something in the body, and the body covers his work as an entrepreneur and student, not as a practicing engineer.

My knowing his birth date does not signify a bias, just access to information (i.e. presence at interviews). Needless to say, a source will be provided. However, your doubts are your own. The party clearly practices engineering, evidenced by the design and prototyping of the TEC, as the given articles explain. He is also a professional, which is evidenced by his business practice (which is an engineering company) and the statements from independent bodies of the Toronto Star, Hamilton Spec, BBPA, and the institutions he attends.
However, while I've not changed the description, another independent party has - back to engineer. I hope you understand this allocation. A big NPT update

Hey! Big update on what the developers have been working on, and what is coming up:

coding

  • Fixes for the "moved pages do not show up in Special:NewPages" and "pages created from redirects do not show up in Special:NewPages" bugs have been completed and signed off on. Unfortunately we won't be able to integrate them into the existing version, but they will be worked into the Page Triage interface.
  • Coding has been completed on three elements; the API for displaying metadata about the article in the "list view", the ability to keep the "patrol" button visible if you edit an article before patrolling it, and the automatic removal of deleted pages from the queue. All three are awaiting testing but otherwise complete.

All other elements are either undergoing research, or about to have development started. I appreciate this sounds like we've not got through much work, and truthfully we're a bit disappointed with it as well; we thought we'd be going at a faster pace :(. Unfortunately there seems to be some 24-72 hour bug sweeping the San Francisco office at the moment, and at one time or another we've had several devs out of it. It's kind of messed with workflow.

Stuff to look at

We've got a pair of new mockups to comment on that deal with the filtering mechanism; this is a slightly updated mockup of the list view, and this is what the filtering tab is going to look like. All thoughts, comments and suggestions welcome on the NPT talkpage :). I'd also like to thank the people who came to our last two office hours sessions; the logs will be shortly available here.

I've also just heard that the first functional prototype for enwiki will be deployed mid-April! Really, really stoked to see this happening :). We're finding out if we can stick something up a bit sooner on prototype.wiki or something.

I appreciate there may be questions or suggestions where I've said "I'll find out and get back to you" and then, uh. not ;p. I sincerely apologise for that: things have been a bit hectic at this end over the last few weeks. But if you've got anything I've missed, drop me a line and I'll deal with it! AfC declines

Hi Dori, I'm currently monitoring recent changes on AfC declines, due to some problems raised recently at the AfC HelpDesk (don't worry... not about you). I just wanted to ask if you would consider declining unreferenced or insufficiently referenced submissions on notability grounds, rather than verifiability grounds (unless the submission makes a clear and unambiguous claim to notability)? Sorry to be tardy...

...but have been quite busy in real-life, and have only now begun to address issues at Keisuke Hoashi. I've been looking into his theater work and his original work "Memoirs of a Ninja" received a certain amount of decent recognition. The Garland Awards are not given away lightly... and though there is no article (yet) on the Maddy Awards, they have been around for 12 years recognizing excellence in Los Angeles theater. Also, the deleted New York State Music Camp will probably be back in mainspace when I have time. It being so intimately related with and growing out if the Hartwick College Summer Music Festival gives a lot of sourcability. The Hoashi article is by no means complete, but in a few days I believe the then-to-be-shown notability, even though minor when compared to some actors, will be just enough. More to do... more to do. The problem is that you removed the existing {{afc comment}} template and didn't add a new one—which means that it doesn't show up on the list of articles ready to be reviewed. Re-add it, and someone should be along to review the article within a few days.

BTW, though: Wikipedia cannot be a reference for itself—that is, Wikipedia (even if in a different language) cannot itself be used as a source. Consequently, I recommend you remove the PL.WP refs before re-adding the {{afc comment}} template. Dori ☾Talk ⁘ Contribs☽ 00:44, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

Why did you remove Vivid Wireless? Vivid Wireless is still a company and has not got an information about it on wikipedia EVEN ON THE OPTUS PAGE !!

As I wrote on the talk page, and as I said in my edit summary, Optus has acquired Vividwireless (note: no space in the name).
If you look at Vividwireless's press release page, you'll see that it hasn't been updated since January. About the only mention of the deal on Vividwireless's site is in their forums; for example, the moderator saying "that Optus has bought the company."
Given that the previous version of the article only contained six sentences and zero sources, nothing useful was lost. Sure, something about the acquisition ought to be mentioned on Optus's article—be my guest and add it!
BTW, regarding your "source": sorry, but that does not count as a verifiable, reliable, independent, secondary, third-party source. Dori ☾Talk ⁘ Contribs☽ 04:36, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
