Could you help me again please (I am too scared to even try!) - in the Parents section on the above page there is a link "Lady Bullock (nee Barbara Lupton)... can this link please go to the 20th Century section straightaway on the Lupton family page which discusses Lady Bullock - rather than to the top of the Lupton page as it does at the moment? Well, I am able to edit, but I am not sure whether that specific edit should be done. Frank Newman Turner

I hope this is the right place and person to resolve a problem with copyright on a photo that was used with the biographical entry I wrote about my father Frank Newman Turner. The photo was uploaded but removed after 30 days because there was no clear indication of copyright. The photo was commissioned around 1950 and taken by a Douglas Allen, who is long since deceased. There is still a firm called Douglas Allen Photography listed for Bridgewater, near where the photo was taken for use in my father's books, (we have multiple copies of it) but I have been unable to contact them as the address and phone number seem to be redundant.

Although the photo has been in our family archive (and in new editions of his books) we have no way of verifying copyright. My brothers and I hold the copyright to all our father's published and unpublished works. Can you advise on how I might be able to reinstate the photo with the Wiki biographical entry? Revisions to Janet Jones (artist)

Hello Dismas. Last night, you made a reversion to Janet Jones (artist), a page marked under construction as part of a meet-up. You may not have realized that the new user involved was working in a library under the in-person guidance of Wikipedia Administrators (including Anne Delong). The new editor was focused on formatting, prior to inserting relevant content with citations. Your form comment to this new editor ("Please refrain from making unconstructive edits to Wikipedia, as you did at Janet Jones (artist). Your edits appear to be disruptive and have been... ") came across as aggressive.

This new editor comes with significant knowledge resources that would be highly valuable to Wikipedia, and while your overall efforts are appreciated, you should give pages marked with under construction templates (see below) the stated days to complete their collaborative work, especially on stubs.

As you know, quality articles require people with exceptional writing and research skills. Patience with them on initial edits and posts would go a long way to improving the overall quality on Wikipedia.

@Seazzy: I missed the 'under construction' template on the second edit because it wasn't there on the first. I saw the numerous non-functioning categories, empty sections, and bad template markup and figured the editor had added back basically the same bad content.

thanks Dismas for answering my question. I guess the problem that I have with it is this person is recognized on the Nibbler part on Wikipedia but can't be recognized in his own home town part on Wikipedia side, and whenever it gets added it gets removed. There is plenty of documentation out there to prove this to be fact and I am guessing because he doesn't have his own page is because he is not on the Ottumwa side of it. And I'm sure that he would be removed anyways, seems that for some reason someone does not want him on there.Deonsia (talk) 18:25, 9 October 2015 (UTC)

@Deonsia: I don't understand what you're trying to say. What do you mean by "Nibbler part on Wikipedia"? If I look up Nibbler, it is an article about a sheet metal cutting tool. And it doesn't mention a person's name at all.

As far as being added to the "Notable people" section of the Ottumwa article, the person must have an article first. Then they can be added to the list.

If you can find enough sources to verify the person's notability (per WP:BIO, WP:GNG, or any of the many other notability guidelines) then you're welcome to start an article for the person. I suggest going through the WP:AFC process. With that process, you'll be able to get input from other editors about whether or not your article is suitable for Wikipedia. Removal of edit- Lucy Pinder Article

@Metricroad: I removed it mostly because it didn't have a reference. Granted, some random fact about where she went to school isn't really needed in the lead either but my main concern was that it was unsourced. You must have gotten the information from somewhere, so that should go in the article with the info. Please see WP:RS about what constitutes a reliable source. And WP:REFB will help explain how to put the reference in the article.

As far as whether it belongs in the lead, I don't think so. A simple personal life section could be put together with her school info. The lead is usually a place for the most basic biographical details (place of birth, date of birth, etc) followed by a short explanation of why the person is notable and a short summary of their more noteworthy works. Where she happened to go to school doesn't really fit in that, as far as I'm concerned, since she's not notable for her schooling.

1. It's already been done.
2. You asked this of at least two editors directly and at the help desk. Don't do that. If you want many people to see it and someone to respond promptly, ask at the help desk. If you want to work with one editor, ask one person on their talk page. If choosing this latter option, know that it may be several hours/days until that person logs in again and sees your message.
3. When you ask several editors directly, you waste the time of whoever comes second, third, etc. since it's already been taken care of but they don't know that until they go to the trouble of going to the article, etc.

I'm happy to help but please don't ask for it in this manner again. I don't get much Wikipedia editing time these days, so I hate to have to go on wild goose chases where the work has already been done. Dismas|^(talk) 13:21, 9 January 2016 (UTC)

Lucy Pinder

Hi @Dismas,

Why is it, in the past when I added Lucy's social media sites, You removed them because they were linked to on her website? But then someone else was able to add her Twitter and Facebook. So I went and added Lucy's Tsu and you removed my edit again.

I don't much about how Wiki edits works, but it seems very inconsistent.

@ToddAF: It is very inconsistent. There are many editors and most of us just edit what happens to catch our eye. But thank you for calling attention to the FB and Twitter links. I've removed them again per WP:ELNO.

I don't remember our past interactions at the article. There are many articles and many editors that I interact with and I don't remember every one.

As for why I removed the Tsu link, we don't list every site where a person is listed, e.g. social media sites. If the Tsu site is so important to Pinder, she can post a link on her official site.

Gentle discouragement

Hi Dismas- I saw your post on the helpdesk from a couple days ago regarding a user's level of fluency in English, and found your example re editing the German wp (and the post of @Robert McClenon: above you) to be well put. I constantly encounter poor writing here on en.wp from editors who for some reason want to contribute outside their fluency limits. I get impatient with these editors, especially if they are very active here, and I sometimes find myself trying to discourage them from editing on en.wp and encourage them to stick to wikis in languages in which they are fluent. I have looked through our guidance, to no avail, for some kind of policy or advice to this effect. Do you know of anything I could cite when communicating with the overly confident? Eric, I can't think of a guideline for that. Though, I haven't looked for one either. I'm at work now, so don't have a lot of time, but if I think of it later I will look for one.

I agree. I think that something should be said somewhere, but I am not sure what or where. I think that many experienced editors may be trying so hard to follow the concept of do not bite the newcomers that we may forget its original purpose, which has to do with editors who are likely to make positive contributions to the encyclopedia with a little knowledge and encouragement. However, there are a few editors who are unlikely to be able to make positive contributions to the encyclopedia without a remedial course in English as a Second Language, which is beyond the scope of what the English Wikipedia is for. We really don't need to go to lengths to tolerate editors who have very little grasp of English, especially when we have 280 languages for Wikipedias, some of which desperately need editors. Unfortunately, maybe we need a guideline to discourage editors who really can't handle English, and we need the concept of telling them to edit in languages that they do know. I don't know how related this is, but I also think that, in the English Wikipedia, too many editors too often forget that some editors are net negatives to the encyclopedia. That includes both editors who clearly don't know English, and editors who are combative. Anyway, that is my thought. 1. To add a link to another article, you would put the title of the article in double brackets. So [[President]] would result in President. If you want a link to appear as some other word, you can use what is called a pipe. So, [[Barack Obama|President]] would result in President. See WP:WIKILINK and WP:PIPEDLINK. If you want to add a link to an external site, something which is only rarely done in the body of an article, you would use a single set of brackets. So [http://google.com Google] would appear as Google.
2. See Wikipedia:Requested articles.
3. You can request something like that at WP:VPT but I doubt that it will happen. Almost every page on Wikipedia is editable by everyone. It would be very hard to keep someone from adding that specific thing to a page that didn't deserve it.
4. I never asked for any of that recognition. It's like getting a compliment. You don't ask for them. People just give them to you. So, do a good job and someone might give you a WP:BARNSTAR or the like.
5. You type four tildes. Like this: ~~~~ On my keyboard, they are next to the number 1 at the top left corner of my keyboard. I'm using a standard QWERTY keyboard. This is in the box that you copied from my talk page and put at the top of your own talk page. Did you read it before putting it on your talk page?

2. See Category:Wikipedia protected pages
3. See WP:BOT. They do many things from reverting vandalism to correcting spelling errors. The person who programs the bot generally manages it. Editors create them with programming. A bot is an example of a legitimate alternate account. I've only ever used one account, so I'm a little unfamiliar with why someone would have more than one account. Maybe they are a person who has an article about themselves here and they use one account with their name to suggest edits to the article about them and then they have another account where they make edits completely unrelated to the article about them. There are many notable people who have articles here. Cory Doctorow is one that I can think of off the top of my head.
4. I haven't created an article in a while. When I wrote most of mine, Wikipedia was still expanding much faster than it is now, so there were a lot of topics that didn't have an article. Some were movies that were notable that didn't have an article yet. Some were actors who were just becoming notable enough to have an article. Family Groove Company is a band that was just getting to the point where they were notable enough for an article when I happened to go to a concert of their's and I saw they didn't have an article. You can find many ideas at Wikipedia:Requested articles.

No, an admin is a special role on Wikipedia. Anyone who edits Wikipedia is called an editor, whether they've created an article or not. Admins perform duties such as protecting pages, banning editors, deleting articles, undeleting articles, etc. See WP:ADMIN.

To control a bot you'd first have to program it. See WP:BOT.

1. To view their main sandbox, just put /sandbox after their username. Though they may have more than one. One for each article they're working on, for instance. To view all those, go to their userpage, click on the "User contributions" link on the left side of the page, scroll to the bottom of those contributions, and click on "Subpages".
2. Normally barnstars are put in the talk page and then the user can put them on their user page wherever they like. The design and layout of an editor's userpage is normally left up to them.

1. Type User:VarunFEB2003/WhateverYouWantToNameYourSubpage into the search bar and hit enter. When the results page comes up saying that there is no page with that name, click on the red link, and you'll be editing that new page. Click save and it's created.
2. Click on the View History tab at the top of any article.

Help needed

Hi Dismas, I am rewriting this article-Symbols of States of India In my second sandbox and I have created 3 tables in it which look like this on my computer.(in this pic below)- File: Image for help.png These tables arent compatible and look differently placed on differnt PC's laptops. Since an article should be compatible and should be equally viewed by all could you pls make the code for tables in a way that they look the same everywhere. I haven't worked with columns and tables much here on Wikipedia but I think my recent edit will be more like what you're looking for.

That said, I don't know if I've ever seen tables, in separate columns like you have, here on WP. Part of the reason is probably just like you said, many people are going to be using different browsers on different devices using different screen resolutions. So, while two columns may work for desktop systems, I'm not sure how it will work on a tablet or phone.

You may find someone more knowledgable about tables at the Help Desk or you might want to read over WP:TABLE to see if there are suggestions there. Dismas|^(talk) 22:58, 25 June 2016 (UTC)

Tatjana, Veiled Head - new photo added to Wikipedia

Hello Dismas,

Thanks so much for alerting me to the incorrect use of this photo on Wikipedia. What is your advice for legally using photos by photographers (living or deceased) - when their photos are already known world-wide and regarded as iconic works of art?

I have written to the Herb Ritts Foundation to ask for their permission to incorporate this photo - which is on their website - to Wikipedia. If they say yes, how may I transmit that approval to Wikipedia?

The photo, "Tatjana, Veiled Head" was an image by Herb Ritts used to promote exhibitions of his work at museums - which is what cited. There were many more exhibitions, I did not cite them all.

This image was originally used as a cover of a magazine. When I searched for "rights free" images by Ritts, this image occurred several times, each time affiliated with a different exhibition. Because it is being used to illustrate the photographer's work on Wikipedia, and because many other museums have singled out this image when promoting the artist and exhibition, I added to Wikipedia.

LaVicente, I have a feeling you're going to have an uphill battle keeping that photo, not to mention the magazine cover, on Wikipedia. I'm by no means an expert on image licenses but here are my thoughts in no particular order (I'm enumerating for clarity in case you want to discuss a certain point):

First, if a free alternative image is available or can be created then that is what is used in articles about living people. Note that I said "or can be created". Since Tatjana Patitz is still alive, a completely free image can still be made of her. In fact there is already a free image in the article. See WP:NFCCP#1.

Second, I can almost guarantee that the image is still owned by Ritts and is not released under a free license. Selling his images and licensing them is how he makes his money. Not many professional photographers release their works under free licenses.

Third, it's not that Ritts is alive or dead, it's that Patitz is alive. See my first point.

Fourth, see Lenna. This is an iconic image. Now see the article for Lena Söderberg, the subject of the portrait. You'll notice that the image of Lena is not in the article about her. This is because we have an article for the image because it is notable. It's the image that is being discussed in the Lenna article. There are many sources which confirm its notability. Since the image is not free, it is not in the article about Söderberg.

Fifth, the image which you uploaded was of so high a resolution that someone could print the image and thus keep Ritts from making money off the image. See WP:NFCCP#3b.

Sixth, I have no idea what the Mona Lisa has to do with this discussion. The painting was created 500 years ago by an artist that died 500 years ago. Any modern copyright claims that da Vinci had would have had are expired due to his death so many years ago.

Seventh, for donating content, see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.

Besides writing a new article from scratch, I'd say that image licensing is the most difficult and confusing part of working with Wikipedia. Copyright law is confusing and I don't know all the ins and outs. I hope I've been able to add a bit of clarity for you. Questions? Let me know. Carol Smallwood, I don't have much time these days to do a lot of Wikipedia work. But I try to drop in to the Help Desk when I can. That said, I'm not the only one who would prefer that conversations are kept orderly and in as few locations as possible. So, following up on the Help Desk would be better than posting to everyone's talk page individually.

Puzzled?

I queried why a very brief addition I made was 'reverted' i.e. deleted. This was done by but now it appears Dismas is involved. I've tried to find your message but moving around Wiki is less easy than a maze!

Here's a brief summation of what went on. I inserted being assigned Army serial number 53310761 into https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvis_Presley section 1.4 military service same day I was notified = undone, as 'unnecessary detail'

How can I learn about this when reasons/messages are hidden away? It is not conducive to my objective of spending more time on and increasing donations to Wiki. Sadly it appears somewhat like a 'closed shop'

I would like to inform you that I have read your message regarding my problem in Ur. I agree with your point that both of us got carried away and I accept that. However, I disagree that I involved at least 5 moderators regarding this issue (although that is not the point) as only four moderators including Shellwood were brought in on this issue. I see that this is not the point but I just wanted to correct the mistake written. What happens if I make a mistake in the future on an article, as a result, I will get banned from editing in Wikipedia. I would like to ask you where I can resolve this issue.

Crazypig129, if you make a mistake, you make a mistake. There's no log somewhere other than on your talk page. If you'd like to remove the warnings that you received, you can. See WP:BLANKING.

That said, there's a difference between making a mistake and causing trouble. If you're causing trouble, yes, you'll get banned. Bans usually start at 24 hours but can become longer if the user doesn't stop causing trouble.

I'd like to direct you to WP:BRD for how this Ur situation should have played out. You were bold in making an edit. Shellwood reverted. And then you should have gotten into a discussion instead of starting an WP:EDITWAR.

As for the Ur question, I think that's settled since your sources aren't considered reliable. If you still want to stand by them, then I would start with a discussion on the talk page at Talk:Ur. If that doesn't work, there is WP:DISPUTE.

What I'm getting at is that there are ways around just butting heads with other users.

Minor edit on article about Robert Mueller

Greetings, Dismas.

I want to make a minor edit to the article about Robert Mueller as Special Counsel. However, there are a bunch of "warnings" about editing the page. The edit I want to make is simply to use the full name of Michael Flynn in the opening paragraph. Can you tell me if this is OK. Pudding

It's also important to understand the difference in the word "pudding" in US English versus UK English. In US English, it means a sweet dessert, like chocolate pudding, butterscotch pudding, tapioca pudding, bread pudding, etc., unless otherwise specified, while in UK English savory versions of puddings also may be served as, or with, the main course. Of course, there are also sweet puddings in the UK, such as figgy pudding and those served in the US listed above. Star Trek episode lists

Thanks for changing those antiquated episode lists in the infoboxes for Star Trek episodes. I've been trying to go through all the episodes and standardize the intros as well as the info boxes. I had been pasting those episode lists from an earlier episode; didn't know there was a better way to do it. StarHOG, the thanks should really go to some editor who happened to fix an episode that was on my watchlist. I saw it as something I could do pretty easily and cherry picked the episodes I knew were Star Trek episodes from the category. Jim and I waited, very quietly, to hear what she would say to them. She said the right thing, always. She looked at the three tall firemen in their shining helmets, standing among the smoke and cinders and dissolving snowballs, and she said, "Would you like anything to read?" Archive links

I'm quite familiar with archive links being added by the Internet Archive Bot, but hadn't seen someone adding them manually before. When using the IA Bot to add them to a whole page at once, there can be issues. The IA Bot is third-party software, and you agree to monitor the links you modify using the tool, mainly agreeing to check each one to ensure that they are working and keep working. I've met some "archive links evangelists" who've added them to 100s of articles because they didn't know the TOS. The archive links are helpful to a point. Actually, there are less problems when added manually because a user is checking the archive links. The Bot has no way to know if the archive link they dig up is a good capture. So, thanks for me letting me know. I will check the URLs more carefully next time it happens and allow this type of citation. dawnleelynn^(talk) 19:44, 28 January 2019 (UTC)

dawnleelynn, I checked both links and both worked with the same data present. I know that some sites will remove older stories after a certain amount of time, so I'll grab the archive link sometimes when I'm feeling particularly industrious. Even if that means forcing the Wayback Machine to archive the page right then. As stated in my edit summary, I see it as future proofing.

I've never heard of the bot of which you write.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I've never found someone who hadn't heard of it. When an editor runs it on an article, it can place messages in talk pages. But that is less often than it used to. Anyway, the "add archive links" is an option you have to check and thankfully most don't. It typically just fixes broken links with an archive link. It was run on this article twice recently, and there are two messages in there: [1]]. Perhaps the messages will look more familiar to you than the name of the bot. unreasonable request

Hello It is unreasonable request to ask me to do in-line citations while the captcha system is in act, because I am blind. I can't read the chars on the thingy so I will remove lily from Kether Donohue and you will have to cite it for me, just until the captcha adds an audio option. I don't have people I can ask to just read the code for me. Help with photo

I appreciate your guidance on filing a photo in Commons. The photo in question is my own camera work...no Copyright issues. I tried some time back to contact someone off the Spanish wikipedia article for Emiliano Lojero, no luck. The update to Commons worked. I did make a small typo which I will correct later.
