Welcome to Wikipedia! Working on stuff here has become one of my favorite hobbies; it's quite a bit of fun and, yes, it can be quite addictive. As you've probably noticed, we are in serious need of a lot of small edits - especially those birthdate/date of death/year pages. I've added literally thousands of them, and there are hundreds of thousands more to do. Currently, I'm going through all the NFL teams and cleaning up those hundreds of player articles and getting their info on the date/year pages as well. Whatever assistance you can provide with any biography articles (or on anything else) is always appreciated. :)

As far as the Vermont Teddy Bear Company article goes, I can't remember what prompted me to create that one - I think I was reading something on the Vermont page, maybe. I just figured that a company like that really needs an article (it truly is a fine company - great products). Feel free to update the article with any additional information you have. (Be bold!) I mostly culled info from the company's web site, so you'll likely have access to more information that I ever will - don't hesitate to update and add more to that article.

So, I hope you enjoy Wikipedia. If you have any questions about anything, feel free to let me know - I'll try and point you in the right direction.

No, no! Certainly not. He was intriguing and I thought the encyclopedia merited more about him. I've removed the expansion tag, but it's still a stub - which is nothing to be ashamed of. Most Wikipedia articles right now, I'd reckon, are stubs. It just means there's a good room to grow.

Not a problem! I commented them out because I clearly remember seeing them on TV growing up in Rockville, Maryland and when i lived in Takoma Park, Maryland. We used to spoof them in school, the "it takes a tough man to make a tender chicken" line became common use. If however you can show statistics that state they were shown less often than elsewhere, I'd agree to putting them back. Playmates

I put the succession boxes on the Playmates because I felt they should use them. As for creating a page for every Playmate, I might or I might not. Or maybe someone else will eventually. I noticed 10qwerty's wikilinks to all the Playmates on the List of people in Playboy 2000-Present. I had an article on Miss Novemer 2001, Stephanie Heinrich, that was put up for deletion the same day I composed it. (See the VfD discussion here.) Playmate Info Box

Just noticed that you've expanded on the Playmate info box that 10qwerty was putting on Playmate's pages. I thought I might make a suggestion... It might help if you put at the top of the box, or right below the picture, the fact that it's associated with their appearance in Playboy. For instance, Jenny McCarthy's box starts out with "October 1993". Without saying that she was in Playboy in Oct. of '93 it doesn't have any relevance to the average reader. Scout ranks

Well, being a scout myself rank insignias and rank itself has deep meaning and requirements. I think they each can be a page as there is enough material. I am trying to write uniform articles. Re Multiple and over-linking

On Carla Gugino you commented "I'd like to see where it says not to link the film names in two different sections since pretty much every other actor bio I've read here does the same thing". If you refer to Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style_(links)#Internal_links the third item in the list tells us "An article may be considered overlinked if any of the following is true: * a link is repeated within the same screen" which clearly this was (and now, again). It also makes it more difficult on link changes for an editor to track each one if an article has multiple links to the same other page. Re "every other actor bio", btw, two wrongs do not make a right ! (and if I come across such pages I delete the overlinking there too). Rgds --Vamp:Willow 14:04, 12 September 2005 (UTC)

Personal insults and attacks do not belong on wikipedia

On two occasions (edit summary[1] and AFD[2]) you've called a baby a "demon baby". Personal insults are a violation of wikipedia's requirement to be WP:CIVIL. I don't think its possible to actually hate a baby you don't know, so I'll assume this was a "joke" (a bad joke), and kindly ask you to not to do it again. --rob 06:35, 19 September 2005 (UTC)

Wikilinking dates

Recently, I edited International Talk Like a Pirate Day by removing the wikilink on the second mention of September 19. I see it as over-wikification. You re-wikified it to "allow date preferences to work". You cited Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (dates and numbers) as justification. I don't see where it says that every instance of the same date need be linked just to allow for date preferences to work. Could you point out this part of the guideline? My cite was a shorthand explanation of the feature; I hadn't bumped into you before, and didn't know whether you were familiar with it. I was tired when editing and had not noticed that the same date was already linked earlier in the paragraph as well. While there's something to be said for consistency - someone who has his date preference set shouldn't see "19 September" right next to "September 19" - on a second reading, the extra date is redundant and I have removed it. School listings on AfD

Are you aware that listing schools for deletion is about the most controversial thing one can do on Wikipedia? Are you aware of Wikipedia:Schools, which states that one should refrain from listing schools on AfD, and instead should be bold and merge short stubs. If you object to schools in general please add your comments to Wikipedia:Schools/Arguments, rather than wasting everyone's time with yet another AfD on the subject. - SimonP 13:21, 21 September 2005 (UTC)

Now, are you going to keep make mass-deletion request of the same schols, over-and-over again, and until they are removed? It's bad enough dealing with this once for countless schools, but apparently, it's your intent to keep nominating every school, again and again, until it's gone, regardless of past agreement, and regardless of substantial content. --rob 15:15, 21 September 2005 (UTC)

It's a bit more complex than that. Until recently, there was a truce – not consensus, that requires agreement of some sort – not to nominate highschools, as those would attract much debate, which would end with no consensus to delete. K-8 schools were considered fair game and often enough ended deleted if the article was too poor.

This changed when a group of editors aggressively tried to keep entries on elementary schools and grade 5-9 schools, on the basis of "it's a school", with quick "improvements" culled from a Google search thrown in. The point has been made successfully, fronts have hardened, reflexive voting is taking place on both sides, and with the mechanics of AfD ("no consensus" defaulting to keep) the contentious entries are kept.

Much would be won if we could get back to judging the quality of the entry, something that I can't see happening. Pilatus 23:41, 21 September 2005 (UTC)

Intimidation campaign

I emplore you not to be intimidated by the trolls that live in the school. You are quite right to list cruft for deletion, and only a year ago it would probably have been speedy deleted. • People are free to edit Wikipedia however they see fit, as long as it is within policy. Schools

As I'm sure you've seen, there are kneejerk reactions on both sides to every school nomination. I personally think that there isn't much merit to documenting the school colors and principal of every brick and mortar node in a school district. However, they rarely get killed on AfD, and there is a better solution: simply merge the school stub into an article on its parent school district. Usually there really won't be much to merge beyond the name and the grades it serves, so the job should go pretty quick, but may require a little research into the basic facts of the district. Further AfDs are going to be futile; appropriate merging does not require a prior discussion and is the best way to deal with such content. Postdlf 06:11, 22 September 2005 (UTC)

Playboy covers

The fair use tag for magazine covers state that magazine covers should only be used "to illustrate the publication of the issue of the magazine in question". Miami-Dade County Public Schools

I originally created most of the elementary school articles on this page. I did it before I knew there was such a controversy with school articles and once I found this out I stopped, but since I'm not a sysop I couldn't delete them. The main reason I stopped was because the project to create these articles is so massive I'd rather just not have to do it. Thus, I support your deletion of the elementary school articles though I'm abstaining from voting. I do want to know though if you believe that high school articles should be kept as well? Also, should I create middle schools articles, or just leave them as a list? What about Magnet high Schools, adult education centers, alternative schools, charter schools, etc? I don't really believe these articles are schoolcruft because they are linked to the district's article and are daughter articles of it. Also, I didn't create them out of personal interest, I just didn't want 300+ red links on the district page. I'm not yet done with the high school articles, but I want to know if anyone would object to them or not? I would be against deleting the high school articles as I do think High Schools are notable, but I don't want to deal with 31-39 AfDs one day. What do you think? First off, sorry it's taken so long to get back to you on this. Secondly, I don't have an opinion on magnet schools, adult education centers, etc. I just haven't thought about them. As far as the elementary schools go, I just don't feel that having an article for each school that is going to remain a stub is suitable. To me it's like characters from a popular television show like The Simpsons or movies like Star Wars. The show/movies themselves are notable and should have articles but the minor characters can very easily be summed up in lists. I think that the whole is greater than its parts. The Miami Dade County school system is a worthwhile inclusion but to have an article about every little school in it doesn't seem worthwhile. Take one of the schools at random, you just have a name, school colors, address, enrollment date, and principal's name. To me, that's a yellow pages entry basically. But if you take all those articles and put them into a list a user can see just how vast the school system is by the number of items. The stubs are just too microscopic of a view. As far as high schools are concerned, I know I'm not going to win the fight to limit their articles but again, I'm going to have to say that most are not notable enough to have their own article unless maybe you wanted to include info on their sports teams and the number of state titles they have won in their particular sport. Columbine High School could have an article based on the fact that a major event in the lives of several hundred people took place there. Information could be written about like how the school has changed since the shooting, what new policies were put into place, and the social repurcussions from what happened. But Columbine H.S., to me, is the exception, not the rule. But then I'm just a guy in front of a keyboard. I hope this all made sense and if you'd like to discuss it more, I'd be happy to do that. Well, this is what I'm planning as of now: I'm going to wait and see what happens with the articles for AfD (thats why I haven't been working much on it lately). Once that's all resolved I'm going to move all the schools into separate articles (ex. List of Elementary Schools in Miami-Dade County, Florida... or smth to that effect). Then, I'm going to make the high schools and magnet high school articles because I believe in them (plus, the one that's up for AfD is surviving pretty well). If the articles survive, I'm just going to leave them there and not bother making any new ones (I'll let others do that). Then, I'm going to update the district page with like all the stuff listed on the todo page on its talk page. It should take me maybe two months. PRueda29 03:38, 27 September 2005 (UTC)

vermont template

hi, I see you've been adding the Vermont template to the bottom of all the Vermont towns. The template and all the 251 towns it includes seems a bit unwieldy. Since there is already a towns in Vermont page, I was thinking it might be more useful and usable to link to this page rather than include links to all the towns. I'm sort of new here so I'm not sure what the process is for revising temnplates (wasn't sure if it was a good place to be bold or not) and figured I'd run it by you first. Thoughts? (unsigned question posted by User:Jessamyn)

I was really just being bold myself by adding the template. I had some extra time at work and was going in alphabetical order. I saw it on the page for Burlington but not on other town pages. I didn't know why it was on one but not the others and after having checked the template's dicussion page and finding that there wasn't a guideline as to "when to use the template", I decided that I'd just put it on the rest of the town pages. I kind of prefer the template to just a "See also:" section since I think it gives the page a bit more of a grand and/or official feel. In general, I prefer graphs, charts, templates, and infoboxes over just plain text. These are just my thoughts though.

Also, in order to sign your comments on talk pages and such, please put four tildes (e.g. ~~~~) at the end of your comment. This makes it easier for people know who messages are coming from. Dismas|^(talk) 20:14, 28 October 2005 (UTC)

Billie Joe Armstrong

So, if Billie is bisexual, then why does the article sound as thought he is bi, but he has never engaged in sexual acts with guy???

I don't quite follow what you mean but I'll answer what I think you meant. A person can be bi or even gay but never have had sexual relations with a person of the same gender as themselves. It's like if you were to ask a boy who had never even kissed a girl in his life if he was straight. If he likes girls and finds them sexually attractive then he would consider himself to be heterosexual or "straight". Would you say that he's not straight since he's never even kissed a girl? So now you're asking me how Billie can be bisexual if he's never had sexual relations (as of the writing of that article at least) with a guy. Do you see my point? Unilateral Redirect

Our "friend" Voice of All has unilaterally put a redirect on List of sexual slurs to make it redirect to Sexual slang. This was done without any discussion or consensus. He then removed the edit option from the page to undo his vandalism. Can you do anything about this admin/vandal? 155.84.57.253 14:29, 6 January 2006 (UTC)

Jeep Wrangler

Do you have a source to back it up with? For one, it came from an anonymous user, 2) it linked to a non-existant article, 3) it was not written in an encyclopedic style, 4) it seems very hard to believe. All those factors combined would make me bet that it was vandalism and therefore you would be a vandal. That's why I deleted it. thanks for the tips

I was just looking over some of the edit policies, particularly those related to external links and bots. It appears that these mass-created external links could be considered spam. What do you think? Is this sort of addition to the page justifiable?

It seems like an embellishment of an existing page to me, particularly where there is not already an image present, but I don't want to offend... As you noticed, I'm new here :)

I don't consider it spam because you're adding a link to a well known search engine and not to a site that you run which you're hoping to get advertising money from. Although other editors may disagree.

Also, you can sign your comments on talk pages using four tildas (like this:~~~~). Using just three will just leave your name, four will leave your name and the time stamp, and five will leave just a time stamp. Most people use four so that they have signed their comment and also it prints the date/time that the comment was made so that it's easy to see which person said which comment first, last, etc. Dismas|^(talk) 11:46, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

Substitution

No, that's fine, except for most templates, you substitute them by typing {{subst:test|n}} instead of just {{test|n}}, which places the text from the template directly on the page, rather than having the server load it every time the page is viewed. Usually only speedy deletion templates, or others that contain special code aren't substituted.

Sienna Miller

I don't think I removed any information about her career in my edit, althuogh i was going to return after a little research and add the film layer cake. I think my edit was an improvement in that it broke down the article into Bio/career sections (partcularly important for someone so famous as a socialite) and included up-to-date info on her personal life. Although the old(ie currant) article included references for the statements regarding her relationship with Jude Law, these articles are old and have become obsolete (as gossip is liable to do). So where do you suggest we go from here?

playboy covers

There are two problems with the images I removed (incidentally, I haven't deleted them, I've merely proposed them for deletion). One is a legal issue--fair use is only legal if there's a small amount of material used for any given document. Those pages with the images in place were about 70% copyright Playboy magazine, which is, quite simply, illegal. We've been working hard at both educating Wikipedians about fair use and reducing our reliance on fair use, and part of that means reducing the amount used from any particular copyright holder. It would not be permissible for us to reproduce every single Playboy cover ever made, which we were very nearly doing. There's also an issue of principle--Wikipedia is the free encyclopedia, and any page whose content is almost entirely copyrighted is not, by nature, free. You said you posted at a fair use page--which page was that (we have several devoted to fair use). We should continue this conversation in a public place so that others can join in. The list is fine, information is not copyrightable. It's just the images that were the problem—my 70% figure was referring to the actual space on the page. I understand that a lot of work went into this, by the way, and I'm sorry about that. Incidentally, I think Thivierr's response to your question at Wikipedia talk:Fair use is quite right--because of the ratio of free content to fair use content, it's really hard to imagine a list that could have images for each item. Of course, an article called Playboy Magazine June 1975 issue, or whatever, that had detailed information in prose, could certainly use the image--if you'd like to save a few favorites before they're deleted, that would be the way to go. But lists are no good, and I've been bringing them up whenever I see them. The same thing came up at Coinage of the Federal Republic of Germany, which used to have pictures of each coin, and the consensus was to remove them. Thanks for your understanding. Drew Carey Show Help

Thanks for helping me out. Is there any way you can move the "Miss Right" page to "Miss Right (Drew Carey Show episode)"? It needs to be standardized with the rest. I just clicked the link created by someone else on the List of Drew Carey Show episodes and didn't realize it didn't have it. Comments on Thought-Space and Original Research

I believe that my problems with properly using the Talk Page have been part of the reason our communication has been so poor. I have responded twice to comments from Sandstein but have not received any reply. I was confused as to how I was supposed to respond and I apologize for the problems I have presented. The original message from Sandstein were references to articles on the Physics Category. I responded that nothing I have written for Wikipedia has to do with original thoughts on physics. I understand that proper credentials are necessary for this field, and that my degree in Physics does not qualify me to list orignal work in Wikipedia, even if I am credited with 17 patents from the many years I spent in research. I attempted to correct my errors and immediately looked up what was necessary to identify a category and entered it into the articles, thinking that this was sufficient.

As opposed to physics, I believe that philosophy is an argument-based subject that uses factual information for the argumentive premises. I have continually referenced this fact based information in my articles.

Is the information I have written about (Thought-Space, Quantum idealism & Interpretive reality) original? Being original is what gives it value. My initial excitement with being a Wikiite was the chance to test original concepts with other Wiki fans, and to stimulate dialogs on various subjects. I believe that when an orignial concept is presented, whether it be in a recognized publication or preached on a soap box, if it is logically stated, properly follows dielectic principles and has meaningful content, then a publication such as Wikipedia is an ideal and proper place for it. What is the point of having a Free Encyclopedia where others contribute, if it is restricted to the conventional and sometimes boring format of conventional encyclopedias? If articles are strictly limited to already published data, where is the freedom?

I humbly request of you to give me some lattitude on this subject. I have no intent to add more subjects to Wikipedia, but only to improve what I have written. Please, let's give it a chance and see what kind of fallout will result. I am looking forward to comments from those versed in the field. Just a little chiding here, re:

   I've made the change for you. Basically you just need to change it so that instead of Richard Armitage, you have Richard Armitage (actor). But this looks funny in a list to have that qualifier in there so you can "pipe" the link by doing something like this, This link is for Richard Armitage, the actor which looks like this, This link is for Richard Armitage, the actor. The pipe character makes it so that anything before the pipe is the link for the article, and anything after the pipe is what text will be displayed.
   Also, questions about how to do things on the Wikipedia are generally asked at the Wikipedia:Help desk. This page is for questions about life outside of Wikipedia.

I didn't say it was wrong, just less than efficacious (i.e. superficial) as the direct link to the specific help page would have been much better, with perhaps the one you gave as an aside. I would have refered him to the source page that contains the pipe trick as well. Consider that your answer may help thousands. Doesn't that make it more important to be focused and targeted? Alexz Johnson Article

Thanks for the corrections and comments on the Alexz Johnson article. Although I have a background in magazine writing, I'm a total beginner in Wikipedia writing/editing, so I'm still very much in learning mode, especially in matters of formatting (e.g., italics, positioning of images, etc.). I'll refrain from any parenthetical comments like, "Still working on this article."

I'll also learn what I can about Wikipedia style and formatting. Any suggestions and pointers would be most welcome.

In addition to the Alexz Johnson article, I'll be working on articles for Lillix (new CD in June) and Shaye (new CD just being finished, probably for release this summer). I went to a Shaye concert on April 28, and they were great, so I'm motivated to do something there.

How are the pictures not needed? there's no pictures of the models in the pages that i add to, that's why im adding them!!! The girls need to have their pictures put up there so that people researching them can see what they look like, in case someone wants to book them for an event. If the pictures are too big then i will just reduce them to a smaller size so that they fit better.

First of all, none of the photos of the women that i put up are covered in semen, second these pictures do not violate the censorship rules another user told me so, and third, i do not consider the pictures of these nude girls to be porn, they are not engaging in sexual acitviy hence it is not porn, it is just ART and nothing else. Me and many other people consider these nude girls to be art not porn, the pictures are portraying the female human form it its most pure state of beauty not in sexual acts. The description of your edits on the history pages are called edit summaries. Below the edit box there is a single line text box that says "Edit summary:" next to it. I started working on the Opus Dei article since April 2005 and I've seen the same thing happen, exactly on that I d thing. There must be some kind of internal mechanism that makes that same thing happen. I remember that it also used to happen with the word "gay." The word would disappear, until we decided to place the sentence where it occured in a sub-article. I reiterate Thomas's plea. There is something that occurs in that page that is a mystery. Len

I don't understand what you find wrong with the Len page. The reason why there's so many quotes is because the lead singer Marc Costanzo is telling us about the developments of the new album, and it's not my fault that he has bad spelling and gramma errors. First of all, I don't see the point in using so many quotes when they could simply be summarized. There are 8 months worth of "not yet but soon" type quotes and all of it takes up roughly half of the article. And it's just one album that's not even out!

Second, there's the tone. The line "7 April 2006 Music Videos are posted on Len's Myspace profile, so check it out now!" reads like an advertisement, not an encyclopedia entry.

Third, it's speculative. Example: "It seems as though they are taking the album more seriously as time goes by." That's your opinion of how you think they feel about the album.

And finally, it's not just Marc Costanzo's spelling and grammar that are poor. There are grammar errors throughout that section.

Really, it's just that section that I have the biggest issue with. The first part is a decent intro, the last half is all lists but that upcoming album part is just too big and could be much better and shorter. Dismas|^(talk) 10:52, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

I don't know of any. Though you can still add scripts to your monobook page. You can find them here: Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts. Some of them are pretty handy. One I use often adds a tab at the top of articles between the "+" and "history" called the zero tab. It's handy if you want to edit just the introduction to an article, not the whole thing. I added an image to sideview mirror and started a new page. I saw that you just after that merged sideview and rearview. I agree that this is the right way to do it, but I am curious (since I am kind of a rookie at wiki): when do you know where to put stuff? Playboy accuracy

I actually think the accuracy tag can be removed. I can't remember the name, but someone recommended supermodels be switched with athletes, because athlete pictorials seem to be very low in number (Which was my main concern). Tom Petty - Red Hot Chili Peppers controversy

Hi Dismas. I saw that you removed the paragraph about Tom Petty's Mary Jane's Last Dance and Dani California by the Red Hot Chili Peppers sounding alike from the Tom Petty page. I didn't add the paragraph, nor had I heard about the accusations before reading it, but I did a little research (okay, a Google search) and there are quite a few sites talking about it. Also, the Dani California page on Wikipedia has similar paragraph and a link to support the claim. Do you think it's worth adding the paragraph, albeit in a less POV fashion than was there before, with the same link as on the Dani California page? Just thought I'd get your input on it.
