Welcome[edit]

Welcome!

Hello, Catsquisher, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on discussion pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{helpme}} before the question. Again, welcome! This account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because your username, Catsquisher, does not meet our username policy.

Your username is the only reason for this block. You are welcome to choose a new username (see below).

A username should not be promotional, related to a "real-world" group or organization, misleading, offensive, or disruptive. Also, usernames may not end in the word "bot" unless the account is an approved bot account.

Please choose a new account name that meets our policy guidelines. However, do not create a new account if you wish to credit your existing contributions to a new name through a username change. To request a username change:

  1. Add {{unblock-un|your new username here}} on your user talk page. You should be able to edit this talk page even though you are blocked. If not, you may wish to contact the blocking administrator by clicking on "E-mail this user" on their talk page.
  2. At an administrator's discretion, you may be unblocked for 24 hours to file a request.
  3. Please note that you may only request a name that is not already in use, so please check here for a list of names that have already been taken. For more information, please see Wikipedia:Changing username.
If you feel that you were blocked in error, you may appeal this block by adding below this notice the text {{unblock|Your reason here}}, but you should read our guide to appealing blocks first.

{{unblock|1=My username is intended to be catchy and humorous. It is neither profane nor obscene, though I grant that those are highly subjective attributes. Nor does it attack another, though I have on occasion unintentially stepped on my cat's tail. I am not trying to impersonate another, do not edit under any other names, and am not aware of anyone else using a similar moniker. I use a nickname only to preserve a degree of anonymity. Regarding my intentions on Wikipedia, I would hope that my contributions to numerous articles make those clear (e.g. Blowout preventer, Roller screw and Helical band actuator.) I enjoy Wikipedia as a resource and try and contribute constuctively where I believe I have a degree of expertise. I do not believe my username violates Wiki policy, blatantly or otherwise, thus the validity of the block is not clear to me. I respectfully request that my account be unblocked. If that is not possible, I would appreciate a more thorough explanation for the block than the one given by Toddst1, who, ironically enough, quotes blatant profanity from Dick Cheney on his user page. --Catsquisher (talk) 06:21, 5 August 2010 (UTC).[reply]

I chose my username from a nickname given to me years ago by a friend as a term of endearment. Prior to yesterday it had never been accused of being capable of causing offense. I find the categorical comparison below by Toddst1 between my username and "child-molestor" to be an unnecessary and inappropriate use of hyperbole. The other comparisons are also exaggerations, which leads me to believe my username is simply being targeted by an administrator exhibiting an excess of zeal. Like decltype, I would appreciate a third opinion regarding my chosen user name, and request that one be given. --Catsquisher (talk) 17:31, 5 August 2010 (UTC)}}[reply]

Your request to be unblocked has been granted for the following reason(s):

per NativeForeigner

Request handled by: Toddst1 (talk)

Unblocking administrator: Please check for active autoblocks on this user after accepting the unblock request.

Inclined to grant unblock. Despite my fondness for cats, I do not immediately see how "Catsquisher" is a blatant violation of the username policy. Would appreciate a third opinion. Considering the user's positive contributions, at the very least I think the block should be "reduced" to a {{Uw-ublock}}, allowing the user to be unblocked to file for a username change. Placing the request on hold. decltype (talk) 09:52, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I strongly support the user filing a name change. The user is clearly a good contributor and should be allowed to continue editing under a more constructive name. I should have used {{Uw-ublock}} in the first place and have changed it. My apologies for that.
Regarding the appropriateness of the name, do you think dog-eviscerator or pet-maimer would be apropriate? I think these and Catsquisher are in the category of child-molestor or cross-burner and easily "offend other contributors, making harmonious editing difficult". Toddst1 (talk) 14:26, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's entirely appropriate. It's catsquisher, not cat brain stomper, or cat maimer, or cat killer. I don't think that there is any username vio. NativeForeigner Talk/Contribs 17:53, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've continued this discussion on WP:UAA for broader evaluation. Toddst1 (talk) 04:08, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I just saw this and thought - this reminds me of the kinds of (arguably) trivial and downright silly PC things that the Wall Street Journal op-ed people write about at least twice a month. (Sadly, society keeps giving them new material) Anyway, I didn't really read "catsquisher" as "cat squisher" - I just thought it was kind of odd. Anyway, who's to say that it doesn't mean it in the way of "I gave my significant other a good squeeze?" (no offense intended to.. anyone who might take offense for some reason..)
Just wait until there's a machinist who takes the username of "Handscrewer". (see Machining For Dummies, p29) Jimw338 (talk) 22:54, 6 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Need more info on your name[edit]

Please go to [1] and explain exactly what that term "catsquisher" refers to. Your current explanation is inadequate, and looks headed toward it being disallowed. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 17:20, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your lengthy essay does not answer the basic question. If you expect to keep your username, you should explain what it means. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 20:16, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't believe any explanation will save it from appearing offensive on the surface: editors who interact with each other in the normal course of Wikipedia editing shouldn't have to go searching for an explanation/justification for why a user has chosen an offensive username. Taroaldo (talk) 20:24, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Even so, if he provides a satisfactory explanation (which he has yet to do), he might at least have a chance of keeping this seemingly-offensive username. So it comes down to the question of how badly he wants to keep this username. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 20:48, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Since you won't answer the question, I have to assume you're really not very interested in editing wikipedia. Don't be lecturing us about "good faith" when you've got a username that immediately calls to mind images of cats being stomped on. If a user name is offensive to a significant number of editors, then it's not a good username to have. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 22:30, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry Bugs, but you'll never squish an explanation out of me. --Catsquisher (talk) 17:16, 7 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
BB: assume good faith! Anthony (talk) 17:21, 7 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
What good faith has he demonstrated so far? I'm seeing nothing but trolling behavior from that cat. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 18:48, 7 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Never mind Baseball Bugs, as you see he sticks his nose where it does not belong, makes insulting comments on the character of others with nothing to back it up, and takes pleasure in stirring up issues that would otherwise not exist. Best to just ignore the likes of him. Lion barmen (talk) 00:00, 8 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File copyright problem with File:Pantograph Mirror.gif[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Pantograph Mirror.gif. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 12:19, 7 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Now for something completely different[edit]

Hi Catsquisher. Excellent work on Fly system! It needs some tweaks here and there, but overall it's been greatly improved.

You seem to be an especially insightful and objective editor and those qualities are needed in every far corner of Wikipedia. I would like to invite you into one of those corners now and ask for any insights and comments you might offer in this discussion thread about dance terminology. It's possible that I'm being too rigorous, but the ambiguous language used in many dance articles strikes me as problematic. Your objectivity and command of the English language would make you a valuable contributor whether or not you are knowledgeable about dance. Thanks! Proposed deletion of Cam actuator[edit]

The article Cam actuator has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unreferenced dicdef

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Thanks for the courtesy notice, Fiddle Faddle. I had hoped someone else would expand the stub. Since more than 4 years have passed deletion seems appropriate. Catsquisher (talk) 03:03, 15 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Iris Diaphragm[edit]

Hello Mr./Ms. Catsquisher,

I am working on a project, and need to include the use of an iris diaphragm. Your design is basically exactly what I'm looking for, so would you be kind enough to somehow make the CAD files available? I'm not sure how that would be accomplished, but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

October 2018[edit]

Stop icon

Your recent editing history at Blowout preventer shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See BRD for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in your being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. - Radiphus (talk) 18:04, 22 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Radiphus: Please try to remain calm and assume good faith. It looks to me like you are the one engaged in an edit war. You have now reverted changes twice in 24 hours. And, if you'd take the time to look at the discussion I referenced, you'll notice that the prior user, user:Tucoxn, whose changes I had previously reverted, has since supported the undeletion of the file in question. —Catsquisher (talk) 18:16, 22 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I've explained again and again that redlinked files should not be added to articles and you keep putting it back. I can't keep doing that forever. When the file is undeleted, then you can put it back. - Radiphus (talk) 18:22, 22 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Radiphus: Per the red link reference you provided: "Good red links help Wikipedia—they encourage new contributors in useful directions, and remind us that Wikipedia is far from finished." There is nothing in that article that proscribes a red linked image from remaining, quite the contrary. So why would you keep deleting it? —Catsquisher (talk) 18:28, 22 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This applies to the main namespace, not files. This applies to files: Articles should not contain red links to files, to templates, or to topics that do not warrant an article.Radiphus (talk) 18:35, 22 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Radiphus: My mistake. —Catsquisher (talk) 18:40, 22 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Radiphus: and Catsquisher, I generally agree with Radiphus on this issue, regarding not adding red-linked files to articles (several editors and bots work on the large backlog at Category:Articles with missing files). Catsquisher is trying to work on getting this file and other patent drawings like it restored to Commons and I support that effort. I put a link to the file on Talk:Blowout preventer -- it should be restored to the article when it is restored on Commons or Wikipedia. (I hope that restoration happens.) Thanks to Catsquisher for bringing this important issue up at COMMONS:Commons:Undeletion_requests/Current_requests#Please_restore_files_uploaded_by_Catsquisher and COMMONS:Commons:Village_pump/Copyright#Reproductions_of_patent_text_and_illustrations. - tucoxn\talk 16:16, 23 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed that the Village pump conversation about this issue got archived on Commons without resolution. - tucoxn\talk 16:04, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Tucoxn:Thanks for pointing that out. I had contacted numerous users involved in the previous debate (which resulted in the changes to the templates), but they did not chime in this time. I don't think people like to admit when they were wrong. That's understandable but unfortunate. So what, if anything, happens now? —Catsquisher (talk) 17:17, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
