Clan Carruthers[edit]

Hi, thanks for contacting me regarding Clan Carruthers. I have been monitoring the page and noticed that quite a lot of unsourced information had been added regarding the the chief, arms and the clan society etc. It is actually Wikipedia rules that any unsourced information can be challenged and removed. Wikipedia guidelines also state that when adding info to articles that you should have a source for each sentence. The only reason I haven't intervened so far on the Clan Carruthers page is because my own work in the section about the history of the clan has not been touched. That said all of the unsourced info that has been added reduces the quality of the article.QuintusPetillius (talk) 18:37, 9 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Ok currently we have a petition on with the Lyon for a Senior member of the family to matriculate chiefly Arms. If you bear with us I will inform you of any updates eg name of chief, arms, tartan, clan flower etc to allow you to update. They are the senior and direct line back to Holmains so we are hopeful. How do I get this information to you eg JPEG’s etc when they are ratified. Bruce7169 (talk) 15:26, 10 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think you understand. The content added to Wikipedia is supposed to come from published secondary sources. So even if you have some information that may be true, unless you have a published secondary source to verify it then you cannot add it to Wikipedia. However, websites, especially news websites are perfectly acceptable sources on Wikipedia.QuintusPetillius (talk) 16:42, 10 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, in reply to the message you left on my talk page; any artwork that is added needs to have a source quoted in image information to say what it is based on - if it is an image that you have created yourself that is. If it is an image taken from a published source then that will probably be a Copyright infringement which is not allowed on Wikipedia. However, one thing I could suggest is that if say you find a book which is over 100 years old and it has a the Carruthers crest or coat of arms then you can use that as it is out of the 100 year copyright period. For example on the Mackay of Aberach page, the coat of arms I have uploaded there is from the Book of Mackay which was published in 1906 and so out of the 100 year Copyright period. Of course you can use software to re-create the crests and arms yourself which has been done on most clan articles on Wikipedia, but as already mentioned you need state in the file details what it is based on.QuintusPetillius (talk) 17:59, 10 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
