Pointless[edit]

Please read this. I am somewhat dubious about whether fair use can be applied to File:Trophic-cascade-pic-yellowstone.jpg. But since you are in contact with the guy, please tell him not to be so mean with an image that has no commercial value anyway. Ask William Ripple to upload the image to the Commons under a GFDL/CC licence. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 23:27, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I did read that and I did notice the warning as I uploaded the image. There is an option to contest the speedy deletion of the file on the image's talk page (and I would hope that you read that before deleting). I made an appropriate justification addressing the points of the non-free fair use policy and thus I do not believe that following the guidelines set up by this community qualify as "pointless", if it was pointless then there should not be an option to contest the speedy deletion in the first place.
I will contact the image's author and ask what the situation is with the image and whether or not he will publish it in the commons. I ask two things of you though. If this is not possible for some logical reason, I would like the opportunity to re-upload the image under non-free fair use and have it spared speedy deletion. Secondly, please don't call someone mean, or any other disparaging name, whom you have never met; especially when it is a 3rd party (i.e. not me) who you are not actually dealing with in regards to this situation. I understand you may not have meant it in a negative manner, but the nature of this communication medium can make that come across in the wrong way and thus reflect poorly on the Wikipedia community as a whole. — Aubrey Cloud (talk) 06:11, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not RHaworth but I wanted to make sure you aren't misunderstanding what he means by "mean". In England "mean" is often used to signify "stingy" or "not willing to share". I doubt that he was calling the third party "cruel" (which is the definition of "mean" in the US.)

Sorry, I should have noticed your reply. The preferred thing to do in a case like that is slap {{talkback}} on my talk page rather than copying the whole thread. The pointlessness lay in the fact that you had applied the speedy deletion tag and instead of simply replacing the image description with one containing an appropriate licence, you were trying to persuade yourself that the speedy tag should not be there. Apparently you did not manage it! Thank you Cloveapple, for the linguistic point. I did not realise that "mean" has a different usage in American. How about "parsimonious" or "niggardly" as other alternatives? Wikipedia talk pages are not a vicarage tea party - parliamentary language is allowed.

Seriously though, fair-use has a requirement that there is no free alternative available and I am not persuaded that that is the case for the use of this image in the trophic cascade article. What I suggest you do is upload the image to the Commons with the recommended GFDL/CC dual licence and an {{OTRS pending}} tag. Establish permission by e-mail as explained on the Commons:OTRS page. Equally important is that you should provide a decent description telling us what we are supposed to be seeing in the image - "the first 15 years after wolf re-introduction" is being distinctly parsimonious with words. All I can see is a change from grassland to scrub. What is the trophic cascade? — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 17:31, 27 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Cloveapple, for clarifying the word usage there, I was unaware of the UK usage of "mean". RHaworth, I apologize for misunderstanding what you meant.

Thank you for the talkback advice, I was unfamiliar with this mechanic. As for the speedy deletion tag, it was automatically applied when I selected the truth of my situation (copyright holder is giving me permission to use the image on Wikipedia only) from a list of drop-down options when uploading the file. I did not want to be dishonest about the image's status, so I went from there and attempted to provide an appropriate justification. Thank you for the advice on the on how to try and upload my image, I appreciate it. I will give it a shot, with a better description. Aubrey Cloud (talk) 03:00, 28 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
