Internal links within Wikipedia

Hi Annabelle Lukin and welcome to Wikipedia. I'm happy to see you here. Judging from your edits so far, you seem to be interested in functional linguistics, and area that can use more knowledgeable editors.

I wanted to let you know that when you link from one page to another in the English-language Wikipedia you don't need to specify the full URL. Instead, just use double square brackets. In other words, rather than typing [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Halliday M.A.K Halliday] you can just type [[Michael Halliday]] to get a link to the page Michael Halliday. You can also change the appearance of that link by adding a "pipe". [[Michael Halliday|M.A.K. Halliday]] will produce this link to the same page: M.A.K. Halliday.

You might wish to put something on your user page (see top right)—no matter how short. That would stop your username appearing in shocking red all over the place! Some users simply write "I'm interested in X, Y and Z". Tony (talk) 11:18, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:Ruqaiya Hasan.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, we also need to know the terms of the license that the copyright holder has published the file under, usually done by adding a licensing tag. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged files may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the file will be deleted 48 hours after 14:03, 25 May 2011 (UTC). If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. Michael Halliday

Please do not remove references to reliable, secondary sources in articles, even when you replace them with primary references. Secondary references, such as the New York Times reference your removed, are critical for establishing the notability of a subject according to our guidelines, and your changes, if I'd left them intact, would result in a greater chance of the article being deleted. Annabelle, thanks for your contributions to this article. We look forward to more! You might be interested in having a quick look some time at the Manual of style. One thing I see is that quotations usually take double quotations marks, not single. "Words as words" are usually in italic (I note that Halliday uses the singular!). A few formatting issues in SFL articles

Annabelle, I've realised a few things need to be sorted out. Could I ask your advice? I notice in IFG2, function labels are consistently initial-capped (not a preferred way on en.WP, but we could live with it if it's really necessary to the formatting system in SFL). On a quick flick through IFG3 I saw a few full-capped words (TONE stood out on one page, in normal running text—not WP style). I see that at least IFG2 uses italics to mark "words as words", which certainly is WP style.

I wonder how consistently such formatting is used in the SFL literature. en.WP does have a continual tussle between its house style and the formattings preferred by certain fields, even professions. Often these need to be resolved on a case-by-case basis, with arguments weighed from so-called reliable sources, our house style, and other issues. There's some give in the system, but it would be good to maintain cross-article consistency and, if it's important, consistency with the lit.

To sign on a talk page, BTW, just ~~~~ will do it—four swung dashes, shift + key top-left on your keyboard if it's a Mac. One never signs an an actual article page, of course.

You might wish to spend a minute on your personal preferences (see the link top right). Under the "User profile" tab, you can if you wish allow any logged-in Wikipedian to click on your "email this user" button at the left; this will still preserve the anonymity of both parties (but if you reply to that email rather than going to their talk page and doing likewise, your email address will go back to them). Most editors do enable this function. You'd need to write your email address in, down the bottom of that pref tab.

Under "Date and time", you could choose "Australia/Sydney".

The editing tab does have useful choices, but I'll leave that up to you.
